Yeah, it's really sad. He made me transition from GameXplain to Nintendo Life, he's great. I eventually stopped watching GameXplain altogether when the rest of its old team also left, since the new one is quite bad in my opinion. Besides, I really don't want to support André.

What??? Aww that's so sad. I hadnt heard about that. Love Jon and I have a feeling he will want to create his own channel for more freedom. Not that NL is restricting him, I just think he wants to spend more time with his child.
@@SuperSmithersGalaxy i agree but the weird thing is he already made his own channel before, it’s what is now known as good vibes gaming, sort their by oldest and you’ll see them
I agree with Ocarina of Time 3D being the best remaster. It vastly improved the visuals and smooth quality of the game while adding in Master Mode! If you haven't played Master Mode, you should totally play it. The dungeons are actually really difficult! It is actually really challenging!
An important notice about Majora's Mask 3D: if you play on a modded 3DS or an emulator, you can download a patch called "Project Restoration", made by Leoetlino. It brings back the original Zora swimming, Deku link controls, lets you use transformation masks with the d-pad, removes the ice arrows indicator on water and lets you freeze it anywhere, lets you save the game when playing the Song of Time like in the original (while still keeping the owl save points) and much more. I recommend it hardcore, it removes most of the remake's flaws apart from the brighter look and other minor things
i never enjoyed majoras mask as a kid and when i was sick and bedridden at the start of 2016 i bought my new 3ds XL, oot and mm for it. i actually finished the game. i thought that the changes were good and because of these changes i finished the game. i bought it and found out about the changes while playing. i can only say i appreciated how the game was. turning into a giant in that one boss. that was the best feeling ever.
Ocarina of Time, with upgraded visuals, IN 3D?!? With gyro controls and many quality of life improvements abundant around almost every corner. It’s the definitive version of the one of the greatest games of all time. I can’t wait till we finally get a complete rehaul remaster in the future on a modern home console, but until then this is your best option
Small detail you got wrong: In Skyward Sword for Wii, it does repeat the message for the collectibles, but the hearts and rupees are only shown the first time on the save file, so those aren’t an issue. It’s still super annoying for the treasures though. Great video, you will be missed, Jon!
If/When they do put Twilight Princess on Switch I hope they give Wolf Link a way to attack downed enemies, there's already an animation in game that would work (the Poe killing animation)
I know these are only the 3d versions but Link’s Awakening is the best remake for me. It’s at the same time the same as it was on GB while still worth the full game price today. I can only hope Oracle ones get the same treatment someday.
I recently borrowed my friend’s 2DS XL and a copy of Time of Ocarina to finally play it. What a beautiful game it is! I couldn’t believe it was one of the very first 3D action games. Masterpiece!!
I just wanted to say Jon really did his homework on this one. The guy was such a quality creator and really cared about minute details actively research things like how the fog in twilight princess drops the frame rate. We need more people like him in the game reviewing business
Big fan of Jon and all the content he creates for this channel, sad to see him leave and if he keeps creating content elsewhere I’ll definitely keep watching!
I think the real question is simply "Would you go back and play the original?" For Twilight Princess and probably Windwaker (haven't played Windwaker HD, just the original) then there is no way I would go back to the Wii version of TP. Haven't played Skyward Sword but for Majora's Mask there are improvements but bot everything is and I would rather the original over the remake. Ocarina of Time 3D would be 100% the version I want to play if I could play it on my TV. That is the ONLY thing holding it back.
I played all the originals when they first released, but now I'd never go back to them. The improvements of the new versions far outweigh the few things that weren't done perfect. Especially visually, there is no question. Even the original Skyward Sword (the newest of those) looks really bad on a modern TV.
@@Ray_2112 I have played all the originals but not the remakes. I replayed Skyward Sword a few years back and it did look pretty bad. I mean it is the newest but it is still a 10 year old game. Honestly I just don't agree with Majora's Mask as the changes are downgrades in significant instances too me and I am perfectly happy with the old blocky N64 graphics. Ocarina of Time though, it depends. I'd usually play on 3DS but sometimes I just feel like laying back and playing on a TV and in that case I will play the original. I'll never go back to the original Twilight Princess though.
@UC6fjy-yANa3UJH3MrdxhKXg I almost entirely agree. I don't thing EVERYTHING is a downgrade in Majora's Mask 3D but there is too many changes I don't like to make me want to choose that version.
honestly proper remasters of ocarina and majora's mask are sorely needed but they need to make all the weird changes in mm optional a 'classic mode' if you will
@@Yetaxa I wouldn't say no to proper remasters but I don't really have any desire for them to try and remake Ocarina from the ground up because the 3DS in my opinion is perfect with the one flaw being it is on a handheld.
Man, I really love having two screens. I really do. The DS's and even the Wii U. I'd love for Nintendo to merge the Switch and Wii U, people won't like it and they won't do it but two is better than one!!!
I agree. That is something the Wii U did better than the Switch for sure. That and I never had joy-con drift on the Wii U gamepad (or any other 1st party controller ever for that matter.)
It's a bit sad how they gimped BotW on Wii U by removing any sort of second screen functionality just so that the switch version wouldn't be worse in any way.
Wii U is my favourite console ever. I wish the Switch had a dongle instead of a dock so it could have duel screens. I'd also like the remote functions back.
One notable exclusion from the Majora's Mask 3D segment was the changes made to the Bomber's Notebook - In the 3DS version, it's a lot more streamlined and easier to keep up with, and while that may be a turn away for some players as they enjoyed piecing together the schedules of Termina's inhabitants, I think it really helps with accessibility and allowing more people to enjoy the game.
@@Paradox-xm9zq you don't have to talk to them, and it really helps with obscure shit like the hand that comes out of the toilet at the inn at night. It's really no different from the sheikah stone that tells you how to solve puzzles.

Man twilight princess made such a impression on me. Out of all the Zelda games it still holds a strong position in my heart. I guess because of the darker tone over all.
the reason WWHD runs so poorly during harsh weather and when explosions go off is because they scaled up the resolution of the particle effects and all transparencies to suit the game's HD output without considering the Wii U (and most consoles, up until this past gen really) can't *really* handle such high resolution transparencies without the required fill-rate. EDIT: also Jon, do yourselfa a *MASSIVE* favour and check out Twilight Princess' NTSC version on Wii, it's a MUCH cleaner experience than what us PAL users got back in the day due to a bug that was never fixed, even in Progressive scan the game used a De-Flicker filter as if it were running on a CRT and it led to a muddy image.
I think a lot of the issues with Majora's mask come from it being a handheld and what that means for someone gaming. The wait around and try something repeatedly element doesn't jive as well with short busride play sessions of a handheld. That said them ruining Deku running is lame and they could have at least put magic pots all over the ocean floor so you had an option to use the fast swimming more.
@@thelegendofstonecoldstevea3205 The deku running doesn't change much, and you can get infinite magic really easily, the only difference to the zora is that if you run out of magic you have to just keep mashing the r button to perform fast swim, not a big deal honestly.
Wow, as a huge Zelda fan who owns all of these remasters (except for Skyward Sword), this was very interesting to watch. There is a lot of of information here, things I never noticed or knew about. Great video Jon.
I would give it to Twilight Princess. I've always thought Twilight Princess would be the perfect Zelda game if it was just a little more challenging. The addition of Hero Mode and the Ganondorf Amiibo puts it at near perfect difficulty, making it the best game in the series... Until Breath of the Wild was released. Then all bets are off.
3D Zelda remasters are awesome and all, but I think 2D Zelda deserves more remakes! Seriously, I think nearly all Zelda games are timeless experiences and having them remade to be a little modern would be amazing! Hopefully, they wouldn’t be as glitchy as the Link’s Awakening remake though.
Nintendo needs to stop pawning the Zelda remakes off to Grezzo and make them in-house Their only good title is Ocarina 3D and Nintendo was heavily involved in that one
I agree with almost everything that you have said here but one argument I think we’ve overlooked is that TPHD cuts down on the tears of light quests in the same vein as how WWHD does with the Triforce quest. For me, along with everything else about TPHD, this makes that remaster feel severely under appreciated
I love John's content. The nitpicky nerd score debates we used to have on the playground. In adult form! That was a fun listen and totally agree with your scores. Way back when, I bought my OG turquoise 3ds specifically just to play OoT. The Windwaker HD bundle with Nintendo-land Wii-U Bundle was my favey for a long time. Also 2 of my all time favorite Zelda titles.
Rather, OOT 3D was the first time the game was translated to Spanish AND the text was implemented in the game, instead of being translated in a separate booklet because the game's launch was suddenly moved forward and they didn't have time to implement the translation. lol
majoras mask is my favourite zelda game, and i've only played the 3ds version. i think a lot of the changes only really bother people who played the original. to me the quality of life changes are so important they outweigh the negatives.
"And will see you next one" we sure will. Now my two-cents on this remaster re-matter. 1.- Ocarina of Time 3D: Probably one of the first things you saw about the 3DS, i remember kiosks at stores having this game with only the menu/intro and being blown away. This game also had a time were you couldn't find any copies, so the prices were going up very high. 2.- Wind Waker HD: I got this one very cheap, probably the cheapest and easiest Zelda game to find (at the time) here were i live, well, the Nintendo Selects one. This was part of the Mario Kart 8 promotion with Club Nintendo, and also one of the games offered when Club Nintendo was closing so i think that getting this game, if you had a Wii U, was easier than any other Zelda in general. 3.- Majora's Mask 3D: This is kind of awkward, the Nintendo Direct when it appeared was on early 2015, it was leaked, but it also dissapointed many people, because there was a video of a fake Majora's Mask HD that people kept remembering, and the real trailer wasn't very good, yet there was still a ton of hype. To this day i haven't been able to buy this game sadly. 4.- Twilight Princess HD: Yes, the graphics were overlooked, this is definitely the best version though, no discussions there. While people remembered the Wii U tech demo and other stuff, Twilight Princess had one major thing and that's that the game was already on Wii, meaning that you could already play the game on Wii U... i even recorded a video mocking that back on 2016, never uploaded it at that time, last year i did upload it on my second channel. 5.- Skyward Sword HD: This is very fresh, i remember people being mad at this release because they still disliked Skyward Sword and that they expected Ocarina of Time instead, insisting in that Nintendo doesn't like money... for me it was more like an expected thing. On the other side, i have seen people complaining about the pointer controls on this game, on them not being like on the Wii. I have a Switch, i don't have this game since it costs like a $100 here were i live, and that's no price for a 10 year old game that i wasn't a fan on the first place, i'll keep playing my Wii copy until i enjoy it or get the Switch one when someone decides to sell it for $10.
Ocarina of Time 3D: Most loyal. Wind Waker HD: Most graphically, quality and musically enhanced. Majora's Mask 3D: Most reworked and unique. Twilight Princess HD: The little improvements add up to make an overall stronger experience. Links Awakening HD: Most experimental and distinctive; but then again, it is a remake. Skyward Sword HD: Most mundane in terms of improvements, but the smaller improvements add up to a finer experience.
OoT 3D had WAY more graphical enhancements than WW HD, to the point where it walks the line between remaster and remake. WW HD just AI-upscaled the textures and changed the lighting engine, whereas OoT 3D is full of completely remade assets.
@@Howitchewstofeel5gum oot 3d is still a remaster because you can tell it's the same engine from n64. Think of it as a really professional texture pack
For me, Skyward Sword is the only remaster I actively dislike when compared to the original version, and it's for one simple reason: the Joy-Con. On the Wii, the Wii Remote and Nunchuck were ambidextrous controllers, so I could hold the Wii Remote in my left hand and still play the game perfectly without any issues. But on Switch, motion controls for Skyward Sword are tethered to the right Joy-Con with no option to use the left Joy-Con, and the design of the controllers makes it extremely uncomfortable to hold them in the opposite hands. Because I'm left-handed and my level of coordination is drastically different between my hands, I straight-up couldn't play Skyward Sword HD properly. It felt ungainly and unnatural. I tried using the button controls, but you can really tell the game wasn't originally designed for it, and I actually like motion controls so it was much less enjoyable. The left Joy-Con has all the same motion control capabilities as the right one, so the fact they didn't even give you the option to switch things around was a huge disappointment. Twilight Princess was the best remaster in my opinion, largely because it felt exactly like what my memories of Twilight Princess were. Some people criticised it for that, but as you pointed out, it was actually a huge improvement. Memory is not a reliable thing, and is often more rosy than reality, so for them to make a faithful remaster that recreated what TP was in my mind rather than what it actually was is very impressive, and what I want out of remasters. I want to see the things I loved in the same way a younger me saw them, and that doesn't look out of place amongst modern games. TPHD nailed that the most, there was no real change in tone or atmosphere from the visuals, and nothing compelling about the gameplay was lost in translation as it blended the best of both old versions.
I think that ocarina of time 3D is my favorite Zelda remake. It is my first Zelda game and the 3D remake did that thing where they made the game look how I always imagined it. As a kid I never noticed the non-rendered areas like in Link’s bedroom. But as an adult I do notice these things, so….yeah. For me that is the definitive Zelda remake.
You didn't mention what I found the most important changing in Windwaker HD. When there were additional lighting effects the characters weren't cell shading anymore and looked very strange. This even destroyed the look of one of the most impressive bosses of the Gamecube era entirely.
In terms of quality, the ranking of the remakes/remasters for me are as follows: OoT3D Skyward Sword HD Links Awakening (2019) Wind Waker HD MM3D Twilight Princess HD I feel like every change made to OoT3D is objectively superior, and Skyward Sword really benefited from most of the changes. I feel like they could have done a little more with it, but what we got is definitely superior to the original in most ways. And they did a great job of preserving the original art direction. Link's Awakening is a great 1-to-1 remake with superior control, but they still could've went further with it. And as much as I adore that artstyle, a lot of fans of the original are torn on it. Wind Waker got rid of a lot of pace breakers and added a lot of cool new gamepad features. The visuals were very bloomed out, but it was still incredible to see it brought up to HD. Majora's Mask 3D made a lot of changes. Too many. It attempted to fix a lot that was never broken with the original, and they overstepped. Some may say that this ruins the experience, but it did bring the game some much needed exposure and it was no longer seen as a black sheep in the series. And as for Twilight Princess HD, it added hardly anything and the new lighting really washes out the visuals. And the character models would have benefitted from more polys, as they look really dated when brought up to HD. And the biggest chunk of new content required the wolf amiibo to access it. It shortened the tear missions, but most feel as though it was a bit unnecessary. It did allow for both Wii and controller support, so that was neat, as well as the Wii's mirrored perspective for Hero Mode. So overall, didn't really add anything new, didn't hardly change anything that needed to be, and kept its biggest additions out of easy access for those that didn't buy the bundle. Some may switch around MM3D and TPHD, but I still feel like MM3D added enough welcome changes to warrant it being remade, while there was no real big selling point for TPHD and it was the second-newest mainline Zelda.
Ocarina of Time 3D is definitely the best remake, it makes the most quality of life improvements, while keeping what made the original so special. It respects the source material so much, I remember back when it came out reading that they kept in some of the original glitches from the n64 version specifically with speed runners in mind. Like what? That's so awesome Anytime I think of Majora's Mask 3D I just get angry, duck that remake. The only thing that bothers me about Wind Waker HD is the swift sail breaking some time sensitive side quests. I never had an issue with the original tri force quest because I made a point to fill out the map and explore every island as I played through the story during my original play through. So generally when I got a triforce chart I knew exactly where to go already. Though the update is nice. As for Skyward Sword HD and Twilight Princess HD, I have no issues with them at all, but I still think OOT 3D is hands down the best
Ik it's not 3d but links awakening was truly impressive to me. From the shadows to the plastic toy like sheen to the new orchestral music. Fantastic game, still feels like a dream all these years later. They should continue to bring back more Zelda games this way since they charge $60.
@Master Shifu I understand that. You do not need to explain it to me. I just wanted to highlight a game I like. You aren't the comment police. Honestly, Majora's Mask is my favourite game of all time, and while I agree with most of the criticisms on the 3DS version, I think it's still a net positive overall, at least for the majority of people. Yes, as a massive fan of the game, I do still prefer the original, but it seems like this is one of the Zelda titles lots of players found very hard to get into, and required some changes to make it more accessible. The boss battles in the original were more freeform because they were much more simplistic in their design; there really wasn't much to them, it was 100% a combat challenge without a puzzle element which 3D Zeldas usually go for. It's entirely possible that they were planning to have them this way in the original too, but they didn't have the time to do so. For remakes/remasters, it is very common to reintroduce concepts that were left in the cutting floor in the original release. I think this change does make the game more consistent with other 3D Zeldas. The Zora mask complaint is also a little overblown, I do prefer the original too, but it isn't a massive part of the game, it just seems needless more than anything. The main issue I have with Majora's Mask 3D is the tone and atmosphere of the game, which doesn't match the original. I don't know if the very muted and darker aesthetic in the original was 100% intentional. N64 games always had a less dynamic colour range than more modern releases, and this added to the atmosphere of this game, as well as OoT. Besides that, I don't love the changes to the Owl Statues, but I do think it's a massive improvement for the accessibility of this title. So generally, it's a bit of a mixed bag for me. I do like this version, but it is not really better than the original, just different, and depending on preference I can see people preferring this one. It did make the game less tedious, but it lost something in the process.
I'm a huge fan of MM as well and I gotta say, the Deku and especially the Zora mask movement was actually the thing that bothered me most about the remaster. I can understand why they made all the other changes to make the game more accessible, but taking the fun out of movement seems completely pointless to me.
An often overlooked change in Majora's Mask 3D, was that they added a purpose to the Troupe Leader's mask. Before, all it did was add some dialogue with certain characters and be part of the 100% requirement. In 3D, it adds in an additional quest with the reward being a new 5th bottle.
To me the best remasters are the Wind Waker and Twilight Princess ones, solely because of the addition of Hero Mode. Zelda games are generally way too easy, so the ability to finally get a modicum of challenge was so much fun, and made me appreciate both games much more.
Jon, i follow you since GX days, i hope you'll find your space. Listening your videos is quite cathartic for me, i'll follow you whatever you decide to do in your freedom. Best wishes
Since the N64 was my brother's, I finally ordered copies of both the Ocarina and Majora's Mask remasters this past year. Along with Skyward Sword last year, I'm just wishing and hoping for the last two to come to Switch. Especially WW, that's the only one I haven't been able to play yet.
As someone who has never played Wind Waker, I have no clue what version to play. The HD version's quality of life features sound amazing, but I hate how the art style was downgraded through the lighting and bloom, making everything look less cartoony and more like plastic. It's like if Okami got a remaster that replaced its cel-shading with photorealistic lighting. It would look less timeless, and I'd adore a Switch port with a toggle to allow players to choose between the Gamecube and Wii U lighting.
The artstyle is the same, just with light. Only some character models look different, everything else is the same, just HD. I wasn't sure about upgrading myself back when the HD version came out, but when I finally did it and saw it on my TV, I was immediately sure I made the right choice. The other imrpovements are better without question anyways.
it's funny what you described if exactly what happened wind waker had the cel shading replaced with photorealistic lighting the okami remasters also famously removed the paper filter (in some versions) ruining the classic scroll look the game is supposed to have
I think putting Skyward in C is just debative considering where Majora stands. As you said you looked at them depending on how they kept the og games's visions while doing what they thought would be best to do and change in the games, and Skyward Sword isn't necessarily the best in that aspect but it is certainly a sweet spot. Specially when you consider what Ocarina did, which would pretty much become a standard for the next remasters from there, and sometimes the later ones do even better at these. But I guess that what's to expect from the remasters also ranks higher with each one, so I'll give you that
Great video Jon, and I hope Nintendo life can survive without you. Those discussion videos were some of my favorites to tune into every week, and I hope wherever you go to next brings a similar vibe.
I will die on the hill that OJ Wind Waker is perfection and never needed a remake🙏🏻 This was such a thorough and well-researched video! What a joy to watch!😊💕✨
A 3ds is definitely worth owning, plus online is still active for it so I’m still taking full advantage of that. Mario Kart 7, smash bros, the Pokémon games and even a game like street fighter 4 still has a bunch of people online.
I'm super grateful for the Majora's Mask changes. As one of my least favorite games in the series, it's a much better game to play and a tad bit less stressful and tedious than the Nintendo 64 version.
Ironically the order in which I'd place them as games even, let alone as remasters. I never personally saw eye to eye (or mask to mask) with Majora's Mask despite how impressive the game was for the length of development time it had. And while the story of Skyward Sword is one of my favourites in the series (and quite clearly is going to impact the sequel/prequel to Breath of the Wild, it was sadly quite repetitive as a game. The rest of the list is my top three, hands down. Great video Jon, the site's going to miss you. ❤
I wonder how good they could make graphics look nowadays if they made a game at 240p and 15fps on modern systems. Yeah it would be low res and slow but they could make the graphics ultra realistic with a huge polygon count
Having only played TP on the Wii, now I wish I could replay it with the HD visuals. Also really wish WW would make it to Switch just so I can play it. :(
Honestly when you stop and think about it, Skyward Sword HD is kinda crazy with how much better it makes the game. I mean, I didn’t really see anyone who disliked the original version of the other games change their minds with the remasters, but Skyward Sword HD actually generated a few new fans out of people who had been critical of it.
Nah dude, the 3ds versions can totally be ported to Switch, just with changes to touch screen mapping. People have been emulating both remasters for years on PC and they play amazing for the most part
Am I the only person who likes the Triforce Hunt in WW? Exploring the world has always been my fav part of Zelda games, and that quest really made you go out and see what's out there instead of going from dungeon to dungeon and I really like that. It also made rupees actually matter for what seems like the first and last time in a Zelda game.
Can you take Alex and Zion with you to start a new channel, Mintendo Lyfe? You guys have such chemistry ♥️ thanks so much for everything and best of luck in whatever you go on to do next 🙂
Skyward Sword has a ton of small changes. In terms of changes they all have had some noticeable work. They are all certainly easier to play in the remakes
Outside of MM3D totally screwing up the blissful fun time that used to be Zora Swimming around the Great Bay, every remaster has been a marked improvement in my opinion.
It’s funny cause Majoras mask 3D was my first time playing the game, I never played it on the 64, and even though I knew about the changes I never had problem with it. So my guess is if you didn’t have that prior experience, MM3D would’ve been higher
I think Skyward Sword HD got the most improved award from original to Remaster. To me the original was basically unplayable due to motion controls and the lack of camera control. And the upgrade to 60fps was massive. Playing Zelda in 60fps is like a dream. Until the remaster, it was the one Zelda game I never finished due to frustration. I dropped a solid 60 hours on the remaster for 100% completion. Loved it. Now it's one of my favorite Zelda games
The Skyward Sword HD didnt bring the most changes to the table as compared to others like Links Awakening, but it was the best Zelda experience Ive had. So thats my winner I guess.
I wish Wind Waker had a gear shift for the quick sail as well so you could slow down and ease off on it when you want to pick up treasure. Also, the parallel joy sticks on the wii u controller make some movement difficult. I do like Twinmold's new boss fight, but I really wish they hadn't tampered with Zora and Deku link. The Zora Link challenge on the moon is soo much harder in this version because of that. And those glittery patches of ice in the water temple just aren't in line with Majora's Mask's more out of the box puzzle solving. Maybe they could've added a master mode where time went faster like the original. Also, don't understand the removal of the Song of Time not saving your progress. Lost so much progress because it was just out of habit to turn the system off after that. Do love the new expansive bomber's note book and freedom with the song of double time, because a lot of times in the original you would play that and wait around and let the game sit idle so you could do a specific quest. I believe the horse control in Twilight Princess was due to their experimentation with the horse movement in BOTW and them wanting to implement that same tech in into TP ( believe I saw it in a dev video for the remake). It just...does not work at all because the map is so much smaller in TP and you're moving around much tighter areas.
I feel like you're underappreciating the Skyward Sword remaster. A lot of the blur is gone, and the game has been streamlined in the best ways. New control options and more accurate motion controls help it a lot as well. The marking of a good remaster is whether it makes it hard to go back, and Skyward Sword does that to what I feel is the greatest extent out of all of these.
@@Nicolas-gt2dj In terms of improving the game though, I think it is by far the best remaster. While it looks visually really similar to the original, it plays significantly better.
Great video for Jon to go out on. I would say Skyward Sword is my number 1 remake because the 60 fps, the many changes that streamline the game really does matter. #2 goes to the wind waker because of the wii u gamepad controls, the fast sail and the triforce quest being changed. #3 Twilight Princess because they added quite a bit to the game and made it look even better. #4 Ocarina of time, they made it look a lot better, gave us master quest and improved the frame rate. There are some bad changes though like the water temple, sure the boots are great but the temple requires no brain power anymore. #5 Majoras mask. Missed opportunity, they made the game way too easy with the boss fights and royally screwed up the mechanics with the masked characters. The tension of racing like your life depended on it is all but gone when you can just pick which time of day you want to warp to.

I agree with Ocarina of Time 3D being the best remaster. It vastly improved the visuals and smooth quality of the game while adding in Master Mode! If you haven't played Master Mode, you should totally play it. The dungeons are actually really difficult! It is actually really challenging!
Yea Ocarina of Time 3D looks amazing. Especially on a Emulator
i’m gonna argue that MM3D is. butchering some original game features aside, camera control makes it the best for me
An important notice about Majora's Mask 3D: if you play on a modded 3DS or an emulator, you can download a patch called "Project Restoration", made by Leoetlino.
Wind Waker HD does use the original textures, but they were re-rendered without compression, so they're technically better.
i never enjoyed majoras mask as a kid and when i was sick and bedridden at the start of 2016 i bought my new 3ds XL, oot and mm for it.
i actually finished the game. i thought that the changes were good and because of these changes i finished the game. i bought it and found out about the changes while playing.
i can only say i appreciated how the game was. turning into a giant in that one boss. that was the best feeling ever.
I’m partial to WW hd. Even though the graphics still hold up amazingly well on th GC, the swift sail was an absolute game changer.
Wind waker HD still gives me a lot of happiness, it was my kids first time really loving the game like I did back on the GameCube.

I don't thing EVERYTHING is a downgrade in Majora's Mask 3D but there is too many changes I don't like to make me want to choose that version.
honestly proper remasters of ocarina and majora's mask are sorely needed
but they need to make all the weird changes in mm optional
a 'classic mode' if you will
@@Yetaxa I wouldn't say no to proper remasters but I don't really have any desire for them to try and remake Ocarina from the ground up because the 3DS in my opinion is perfect with the one flaw being it is on a handheld.
Going to miss you as a part of Nintendo Life Jon… thank you for being a big part of my gaming life and good luck, wherever you may go.
I feel like it dumbs down the game too much, especially with the bombers kids literally telling you where to find the "secrets"
@@Paradox-xm9zq you don't have to talk to them, and it really helps with obscure shit like the hand that comes out of the toilet at the inn at night. It's really no different from the sheikah stone that tells you how to solve puzzles.

I would understand finding some of the stuff too obscure if it was required to beat the game, but it isn't. I don't see a problem with some of the secrets being obscure because literally none of them are required to beat the game, they're secrets that reward you for exploring
@@Paradox-xm9zq It's actually really easy to ignore them. I would know I non-competitively speedrun this game, they've never gotten in the way due the giant areas they are in. Again, these secrets are no different from the gossip stone hints. They are for players who get stuck.
Man twilight princess made such a impression on me. Out of all the Zelda games it still holds a strong position in my heart. I guess because of the darker tone over all.
Yeah I love that game too, but have you ever tried Majora's Mask?
@@Link-Link yeah iv played them all. I couldn't get into it at all. Couldn't at launch and still can't idk y.
the reason WWHD runs so poorly during harsh weather and when explosions go off is because they scaled up the resolution of the particle effects and all transparencies to suit the game's HD output without considering the Wii U (and most consoles, up until this past gen really) can't *really* handle such high resolution transparencies without the required fill-rate.
I don't agree. The only thing you need for a handheld game is to be able to see the screen well and save your game at any time.
I cant wait for MM to come to NSO so I can finally seen how “ruined” the 3DS version is. The 3DS version is the only one I ever played.
The poe lantern in Twilgiht Princess HD also doesn't run out of lamp oil, so that's great in dark areas.
It's been really great while you've been here Jon, good luck with everything moving forwards :)
Nintendo needs to stop pawning the Zelda remakes off to Grezzo and make them in-house
Their only good title is Ocarina 3D and Nintendo was heavily involved in that one
Also ocarina 3D was the first time this game was translated in some languages, like Spanish. So, ocarina 3D really does a lot.
And italian
Rather, OOT 3D was the first time the game was translated to Spanish AND the text was implemented in the game, instead of being translated in a separate booklet because the game's launch was suddenly moved forward and they didn't have time to implement the translation. lol
I’m going to miss Jon’s content here on Nintendo Life.
I think Ocarina Of Time 3D is the best Zelda remaster because it was the first Zelda game I had ever played.
majoras mask is my favourite zelda game, and i've only played the 3ds version. i think a lot of the changes only really bother people who played the original. to me the quality of life changes are so important they outweigh the negatives.
Always disappointed that Ocarina of Time 3D never had an update that added Majora’s Mask 3D’s New 3DS features.
@NewAlebro 3108 And?
@@Wackaz This video is a review of Zelda remasters not remakes. It's not fair if you include remakes.
I miss Jon being on NL 😥
Gonna miss him for sure, I hope he's well wherever he goes. :D
Gonna miss you on Nintendo Life dude, but I'll be sure to follow you in your new ventures. Wishing all the best for what the future holds!
In terms of quality, the ranking of the remakes/remasters for me are as follows:
OoT3D
Skyward Sword HD
Links Awakening (2019)
Wind Waker HD
MM3D
Twilight Princess HD
I feel like every change made to OoT3D is objectively superior, and Skyward Sword really benefited from most of the changes.
Like what? That's so awesome
Anytime I think of Majora's Mask 3D I just get angry, duck that remake.
Twilight princess does change how it looks
Ik it's not 3d but links awakening was truly impressive to me. From the shadows to the plastic toy like sheen to the new orchestral music. Fantastic game, still feels like a dream all these years later. They should continue to bring back more Zelda games this way since they charge $60.
@Master Shifu I know but it's still making an old Zelda game more modern and its really good at that.
@Master Shifu I understand that. You do not need to explain it to me. I just wanted to highlight a game I like. You aren't the comment police. @@ulink265 I understand the point of the video he doesn't need to explain to me what I just watched, as I said I just wanted to highlight a Zelda game I liked a lot that was also brought back recently
So hyped to hear where you go next Jon!
Ocarina is my pick.
The overuse of bloom in Windwaker HD made me feel like I had cataracts.
Best wishes
I never realised how great the upgrade for Twilight Princess was.
I didn’t know you were leaving, Jon, but I’m sure your reason is sound. So while I will miss you, I wish you good luck in your future endeavours
There is a rumored Switch version coming this year. I would wait for that one.
I would skip windwaker, it's just not that great of a game, the prologue and the first 2 dungeons put you on a leash.
Agree 100% on the excessive bloom - ruined the look of the game for me.
it's funny what you described if exactly what happened
wind waker had the cel shading replaced with photorealistic lighting
the okami remasters also famously removed the paper filter (in some versions) ruining the classic scroll look the game is supposed to have
In Twilight princess they added some details to certain cutscenes, like Illia's tears
But I guess that what's to expect from the remasters also ranks higher with each one, so I'll give you that
Wind Waker HD is on of my favorites. I’ll always keep my Wii U just to play it. The game pad is awesome for it
Great video, Jon! Thanks for always producing quality work. Wishing you the best in your next endeavor!
The 3ds remake of OOT was so good it’s making me want to re-buy a 3ds just so I can play it (and star fox 64 3D).
A 3ds is definitely worth owning, plus online is still active for it so I’m still taking full advantage of that. Mario Kart 7, smash bros, the Pokémon games and even a game like street fighter 4 still has a bunch of people online.
I wanna say the miiverse bottles in wind waker HD
I miss that and I wish botw had that cause sharing discovery with other players make Zelda fun
I'm super grateful for the Majora's Mask changes. As one of my least favorite games in the series, it's a much better game to play and a tad bit less stressful and tedious than the Nintendo 64 version.
I really enjoyed the video!! Great job, as usual!!
Skyward Sword HD rescued the legacy of the original game, in my opinion. I think it accomplished the most as an HD remake.
Great video, thank you all so much for the quality entertainment.
Jon you are amazing !!! Good luck in your future endeavours !!! Cheers
Jon don’t leave us man..
Having only played TP on the Wii, now I wish I could replay it with the HD visuals. Also really wish WW would make it to Switch just so I can play it. :(
If they rereleased twilight princess and Wind waker on switch, they should add character names to dialogue
Yes, but the other games also had far fewer detractors to convert.
I want all of these on Switch so much. ik 3D couldn’t just be ports, but it is a shame to see the enhancements and new visuals completely abandoned
Nah dude, the 3ds versions can totally be ported to Switch, just with changes to touch screen mapping. People have been emulating both remasters for years on PC and they play amazing for the most part
Really sad to hear your going dude. You three have a great chemistry and the channel is really going places.
All the best for the future.
Corona virus is making all these variants in an effort to catch up to Nintendo's remasters of Zelda.
04:56 Wow! I played Ocarina of Time 3D multiple times and I did not know this!
Love the Wii Version of Twilight Princess, But I dislike s that in the HD remake there's no Wii remote option
Nice video. I agree with your ranking but I think WW deserves to be up there with OOT.
Can you take Alex and Zion with you to start a new channel, Mintendo Lyfe? You guys have such chemistry ♥️ thanks so much for everything and best of luck in whatever you go on to do next 🙂
I think you are underplaying Skyward Sword remaster. You can't go to Wii version when this exist.
About the Ocarina Songs being moved to the Ocarina subscreen, they were originally on the Quest Status Screen, so this change is for the better.
Skyward Sword has a ton of small changes. In terms of changes they all have had some noticeable work. They are all certainly easier to play in the remakes
Jonthank you for all of your reviews and funny comments. You're the reason I got a 3ds to play retro games. Goodbye 😭😭😭😭😭😭
Link''s Awakening is a straight up remake rather than remaster though. I suppose OoT 3d is also that but it does blur that line.
Jon saying “Baby!” At 10:38 really shows he’s been spending too much time with Alex 😂
But the graphics are mostly untouched, unlike the most of the other remasters
@@Nicolas-gt2dj Look up a comparison. Everything is a lot clearer, even after the original is upscaled in emulator.
@@ducus it does look better, but it isn’t as big of an upgrade as most of the others
@@Nicolas-gt2dj In terms of improving the game though, I think it is by far the best remaster. While it looks visually really similar to the original, it plays significantly better.
the blur was, unironically, intentional
its supposed to look like an impressionist painting
as evidenced by much of the artwork for the game
