      @zedgathegreat9122 3 года назад +3

@@ShinyMew151 This has been my dream since LA on Switch came out. Those were some of the greatest Zelda games that so few seemed to have played. If you like 2D Zelda games, these were some of the most fun and tightly woven games. And honestly, back when I played them, ranked up there with LttP. They took what made LA great, and applied a previous game in the series filter to it (i.e., Oracle of Seasons is LA, but with an original Zelda filter. Oracle of Ages is LA, but done by the way of OoT). Apparently there is a lot more tied to all of this, as there was supposed to be a 3rd game, each representing a different Goddess and their respective triforce piece (Din [Power] {Seasons}, Nayruu [Wisdom] {Ages}, Farore [Courage] {Supposed to be Color}). However, game limitations got in the way and the third game got scrapped. And it all started as a remake of the first Zelda game, which kind of really ended up being Seasons.

I'd say this is more like a puzzle game where you need to find loosely-defined keys to fit in loosely-defined locks and the combat is just another puzzle in this vein. You either lose combat handily or you're suppose to find an item in the surrounding area (often several items) before you can get past an enemy safely. I find it better to not think of the combat as combat at all but a puzzle to be solved.

yes this video is old i know, but this is relevant again seeing as the game is now available on switch (if you have the online subscription and a japanese account) and it's kinda frustrating to see this passed around as gospel.
there is absolutely no proof that link's awakening and the frog for whom the bell tolls uses the same or even similar engines. in fact, they do not- someone hacking the frog game confirmed this to me, they're not even remotely the same.

But big oof on that Japanese pronunciation. Nothing against Jon - it happens. But it really would be worth the time for NLife staff to review how to pronounce Japanese correctly (as it does seem to come up a lot). Japanese is incredibly well-romanised (especially when compared to other Asian languages) - so it would really only take 10 or 20 minutes to grasp. The vowels are always pronounced the same way every time (as opposed to English where vowel sounds can transform based on how the words are written).

So I've tried to make a little guide for him in the comments to help him pronounce the title of this game better (in case he wants to know). I think the only reason Nintendo hasn't done a remake using the Link's Awakening [Remake] engine is because they're unsure how well it would sell. But if the remake had the same visual style as the Link's Awakening remake I think it would be pretty obvious to people that these games are related, and anyone who bought Link's Awakening would be tempted to buy For The Frog The Bell Tolls. Plus Nintendo could really hype it up as a Zelda-esque game. Do you guys remember how many RUclips ads there were for for the Switch port of the first Fire Emblem NES game? There's no reason Nintendo couldn't spend some money to advertise the connection between For The Frog The Bell Tolls and Link's Awakening and get people hyped for a remake. I think it would sell well. They already have the engine ready to go.

@@unk000 Well the reason I mentioned really is because they’re correcting someone who’s prefaced their pronunciation with “sorry for this is wrong” so knowingly admitting that they haven’t got it right.
As for the actual information, provided, it’s dubious at best and pronouncing カエル as this user has suggested is not quite right and, as it’s a homonym for 帰る, which most people would learn within the first week of picking up a Japanese textbook, and pronouncing this this way would get you odd looks from anyone familiar with the language.
Equally, although it’s now been edited, the original comment was also peppered with basic transliteration errors.
If I’m honest, a more sufficient or helpful response would be something like:
“Hi, I see you weren’t sure of the pronunciation there. If anyone was interested you can find a quick breakdown of the Japanese syllabary here: japaneseup.com/reading-hiragana-pronunciation/
And anyone who would like to pick up more of the language should check out the guides at Reddit.com/r/learnjapanese.”
All which could have been posted without the need to less-than-humble brag and say “haha you pronounced it wrong. No big deal!”

Very cool video! I played through this game when I was in high school about 12 years ago, absolutely loved it, and was pretty sad that pretty much nobody had heard about it. The prince of Sablé was even one of my most wanted characters when Smash 4 was coming out, and I think I even made up some moveset for him. His final smash was taking control of the mammoth, but that's all I remember out of it. :D I was really happy when he became at least an assist trophy though.
Also, Jon... I really appreciate that you have a similar obsession of obscure Japanese games as I do, but please try to work on your pronunciation. It was really painful to listen to. :D

It's rather funny how the bump-into-and-fight-in-a-dustcloud combat mechanic ended up popping up in a Zelda game kind of with Tingle's Rosy Rupee Land. Fantastic and informative coverage of this Game Boy game and I'm quite surprised by the amount of gameplay differences The Frog For Whom The Bell Tolls has compared to Link's Awakening.

Joke's on you, Jon. This game DID get a spiritual sequel of sorts.
You ever play Tingle's Rosy Rupeeland? the mechanics in that game might be a bit familiar with the prince of Sable's adventure under your belt.
Seriously, though. I've known about this gem for years. it's a great one, for certain!

...but excuse my pronunciation: *incomprehensible Japanese*.
Seriously just syllable break after every single vowel.
It's not that hard to get 70-80% correct Japanese pronunciation without knowing anything about it. Just pause at every vowel.

Link's Awakening is actually the first Zelda game I'm playing ever, and I'm really enjoying it, and yesterday I entered Richard's house and was wondering about the damn frogs. Then I saw this video as if it was sent to me. Thank you so much. I am such a geek for random video game history. Now I really want a remaster of The Frog for Whom the Bell Tolls.
