That little wrench you used on your tork wrench is called a Dog Bone . A must have for Harleys
I’ve heard it called that as well. Very handy tool. Thanks for watching!
Man, thank you for this video. Very thorough and well done. This is my first go at a 1996 Dyna and I am a very non-certified RUclips mechanic who bought the Dyna cheap (she was in rough shape) as a project bike so I could learn. Between the Part 1 video and this Part 2 video, I was way more comfortable jumping in to learn. Thank you much! 🤙
That’s awesome! Thanks for watching and for commenting!
Thank You Sir ,as a New owner of a 96 evo motor ,w/ 20.5 k on it I see the oil bubbling out the bottom gaskets, the James gasket kit is were Iam headed, now I've owned all types of metric bikes, but this harley bike is much like the heavy equip, work I did before retirement,,,always maintenence before breakdown,,I bought a lift and a mini jack for easy access, and with Experienced Men like Yourself I Can keep this bike tip top, This bike was loved by someone that spent the time to discard the Wrong type of fasteners and go with the right ones ,,that was the first thing I learned from You,,I like your Non hurry work ethics,,fits me just fine, well Thank You Sir ,here in Hesperia ,CA,,Wishing You and Yours a Great Life,,God bless You..... Paul
Thank you sir for those kind words and for watching! Love those evo motors!

I always wondered why things like those bristles try to take my eye out! Magnetism. Now I know.
Ha. A magnetic personality!
I had to do the base gaskets on my 92 FLHTC in 2021 with 60k on the clock. It was built in late 91,was a bottom breather with everything that a top breather has minus the hollow carburetor base plate bolts.
That’s certainly a different set up!

Great episode

Awesome tutorial! I’m surprised there’s so little torque specs on these evo’s. My twin cam was so specific. What did you use to clean off the pistons? I almost couldn’t tell if they were new or not lol. I picked up a 98 FLHTC with unknown mileage. Figured I may as well throw some new rings in just to be safe.
Thanks for watching and commenting! The carbon build up on top of the pistons actually comes off very easily. I use wd-40 and a soft scotch pad (the green ones) and lightly rub off the carbon in a circular motion. Just be careful around the edges.
Good video!! I'm about to do a top end on my boy's 98 softail. The piston skirt is scored up but the jugs are smooth. Think I would be ok to slap some new pistons n rings plus gaskets on and hone the juggs to get some good cross hatch back or what?
Thank you
If the jugs look good then that’s exactly what I would do! Thanks for watching and commenting!
I’m about to rebuild my top on my evo Can I get the info you used on your James gaskets so I can order the same exact ones thank you
If you will search eBay or parts giant or Dennis Kirk, you can put your exact year and model in to make sure you get the correct gaskets. They all carry James gaskets.
I may have missed it but why are you rebuilding? Just curious of the original symptoms
Leaking base gasket on rear jug.
I noticed pistons had some carbon on them ,did you replace pistons or clean piston tops ,and if so how did you clean piston tops ?
There is a part 3 coming next with new jugs and pistons. But I usually clean piston tops with wd-40 and the green scotch brite pad.
I've been Learning on you Sir ,Now Learn on me abit ,,my 96 Flhtcui has 20.5k on it and base gaskets bubbling Oil ,just like you mentioned,,,so I went to James catalog and noticed for my year 96 there is a top end kit that is for a 3"5/8 Bore and another for my year that is for a 4"BORE ,,,,now my evo is a single cam,,don't know which kit I need ???and as for the honing of my barrels do we use a ball beater type with a drill ??and what size is the ball beater tool ??? and whose rings do we run ??? Thank you kindly Sir,,,,Paul.
@@Snowmonkeypablo good question. If it’s stock and the jugs have never been bored over then it’s a 80” which is 3 1/2. Actually 3.498. But it’s called a 3 1/2. The biggest you can go without modifying the cases are 83” which is a 3.5445 bore on the jugs. If you go that route you will need new jugs or your jugs bored out. If you’re just replacing the pistons, then I’d get new stock (3 1/2) pistons and rings and just hone the jugs with any honing tool you feel more comfortable using. I personally use a stone honing tool on a cordless drill.
Thank you,,,If new pistons are required ,,how will I know ? How about who's rings should I run ??again Thank you kindly.
@@Snowmonkeypablo in my next video this week I will be showing this on the evolution I’m working on. Part 3
