      i can not blame this on the oil pump or cam plate. both looked healthy. I will be putting the cyls in torque plates. i believe it just overheated several times, which wouldve deformed the cylinders and created more blowby. That's my theory.

      Every single orange cam plate I have ever seen, with any amount of miles is worn half way around just like this one. I think it is due to the design ,more specifically the wave washer between the pump gears. Combined with no seal between the pump and plate surface...junk set up. I will never use those again. Spun an engine over with the plugs out and cam cover off. Oil bleed off gushing down from pump /plate mounting surface. Just begging for scored piston skirts. Never again orange screamin beagle cam plates.

I already installed S&S cam plate w oil pump and tw222 cams using your videos. But my runout is 7000 on a new motor I bought a year go for my 07 Street Glide and it only has 5000 miles so I’m planning on getting dark horse crank and go bigger displacement from 103 to probably 110.

    Why don't I put a drain plug at the bottom of my crank case where you found all that sludge? Seems to me I'd want to have access to that lowest spot. I'm upgrading to an S&S crank case, though, the Harley cases were fairly clean when I took them apart after 41,000 miles, is sludge buildup/ sumping going to be a problem there too? These videos are a confidence builder for when I finally get to put my 2013 103 back together (I don't have to rely totally on the service manual , though, God knows I paid enough for it). Thanks Kevin, I appreciate all the expert info!

  • @guyconnell2250
    @guyconnell2250 3 года назад +4

    So he's got a non-OE camplate, it seems to have been running rich, and I bet you'll find aftermarket cams. So, like maybe most "worked on" Harleys, this bike was likely never tuned optimally.

    • @KevinBaxter
      @KevinBaxter  3 года назад +5

      it may have been tuned well for an average bike...i dont see typical damage from a "bad" tune. It may not have been appropriate for a trike though...heavy load, etc. I will be putting the cyls in torque plates. i believe it just overheated, which wouldve deformed the cylinders and created more blowby. That's my theory.

It seems like this would improve drivability and gas mileage while maintaining peak performance, or do they currently account for this info.

Mine shut down the one cylinder, told my Son, exit out of this mess as soon as you can. Sturges once, probably won't ever get stuck in traffic like that again, too hard on the motor.🥴

    • @KevinBaxter
      @KevinBaxter  3 года назад +2

      Not in this year...however, there is a "hidden" table in the tuning file that would richen fuel mixture as the engine got hotter to help cool it down. Most could not access that table or even knew it existed back then so i doubt it was utilized as it could have been.

      I pay closest attention to cylinder head temp at the base of the spark plug. 300-320 degrees after a moderate ride with no traffic is great. If that starts creeping up to 350 and higher, valve seats can begin to fall out. This temp reading will be different than what you see with your engine temp sensor. That will always be much lower.

      How do you get that temp reading? My stock 96 powder coating turned gray ash colored around the spark plug. Big bore 107 is now doing same.

    Was it a mistake not to upgrade the oil pump while upgrading the cam plate? Would that alone have helped it run cooler, or would an oil cooler still be recommended on these engines. I have 2 TC88'S and am planning the plate/tensioner upgrade and am debating upgrading the oil pumps. Thanks for putting out info on these older engines!

      that was an upgraded pump that came with the cam plate. On a trike, certainly would have a Jagg oil cooler and a Jims Forceflow Fan for sure!

    Fairly new to your channel.I do have a question.I have a 2005 Deuce.Had 8900 in 2019 IV only have 10400 miles now.I use recommend oil.Took. to a shop for a rear tire they without even asking changed the oil and put in 20w 60 IV only used 20 50 synthetic.Should I leave what they put in or drain it and use what I normally use?May be a dumb question but I don't want to ruin the motor.

      That's not very many miles. On a TC, ive never seen the need for anything thicker than 20w50 UNLESS...you live in an EXTREMELY hot area and i would only run it when its very hot.

      Kevin would you still recommend 20w50 for summertime stop and go traffic in downtown Atlanta? The mechanic that rebuilt mine used HD 50W to break in and recommends using it most all of the time. 10.5/1 compression.

    I personally wish I had seen this Service Bulletin before I bought another one:
    static.nhtsa.gov/odi/tsbs/2017/MC-10124214-9999.pdf
    The bike has no issues otherwise but I guess I can cancel future oil changes.... I have to put new oil in it weekly.
    It seems to me that if they can predict oil consumption at this level in the Milwaukee 8, they can also engineer a fix.

    I'm new to the channel and have no idea where this shop is or any information on it. I'd really like some info in this direction as I have a 110 Harley motor that needs some serious help. Thank you in advance.
