League of Legends is a team based game that relies on communication. However, due to a significant portion of the player base not being the most friendly, there are things in place to stop players from creating an over whelming toxic experience. But, as time goes on, Riot Games still tries to find a solution to the toxicity in game. This time they announce in their new patch notes that they're removing more of the communication features.

League players can't be toxic and also complain that Riot removes things that were nearly always used to flame people. If it is possible for someone to chat off/mute all up to Apex tiers (in my personal experience up to D1, which is lower but still higher than most), then there shouldn't be the need for people to type in chat. Just play your game, focus on yourself, and if you deserve it you will rank up. Crying about "communication" just seems like another scapegoat as to why players are stuck in their MMR. I climbed out of Emerald gaining 15 and losing 29, no chat, ping volume set to 0. Anyone below Diamond who actually things that these things are having a large impact on their games are probably just at the rank they deserve to be at. Solo queue is called solo queue for a reason. People above it may have valid concerns, but I'm living proof that AT LEAST up to diamond, it can be done without chat. If you want to have good communication, go join some amateur league. I'm 90% sure though that the vast majority of players complaining about this are mid-low elo, passive aggressive pingers/chatters, or just genuinely looking for someone to blame. Literally just get over yourselves and learn how to carry. No wonder Phreak is condescending when his game's community is filled with a bunch of 95 IQ, apathetic degenerates.
League players are so fucking toxic and the majority i've met who actively criticize Riot/Phreak are passive aggressive, shifting blame every time something goes wrong, and generally toxic to be around. It's insane how it's the "normal", but when Phreak is only slightly condescending towards people who are literally apart of the problem COMPLAINING to him, it's now suddenly the biggest deal in the world. If you don't like condescending Phreak then you shouldn't like condescending pings, that simple.

The only toxicity that is detrimental is inting all these updates literally make it harder to communicate, I don’t play league anymore but I used to ping ally ults so we know when to engage as soon as the ult is up, aswell as spamming question ping to let my teammates know my laner is roaming because 1 ping genuinely isn’t enough

What is the point of removing communication from a TEAM based game that relies on it? Overwatch has pings, voicechat, and text chat. The pings are also able to be fully customized. You can also just mute mean players.
The point is that its cheaper to block communication than to police it

It became such a depressing experience, no one is using chat anymore, cause everyone is scared of banns, I got a chat bann for saying “I am actually garbage”. Like wtf is wrong with riot, they take the communication away in a 5v5 and so the whole experience is much worse imo, and I kinda liked shittalking in all chat hahaha.

I remember back in early seasons when I could banter/chat with anyone in my games and make friends easily, now I have to pray my chat messages won't get me autobanned for just simply talking about the game
I know right! It was often really enjoyable and healthy and I made some great friends that way. Now no one even tries to respond most of the time because they can't or their chat is disabled. So now I just run it down when I want to ping something or say something and I forcibly cant because of rito and target players to e.g. jump on as rengar again and again especially on new accounts so hopefully more and more people quit this godawful game.

Imagine you type "Hold on lemme just kill Annie and I am coming bot to help" and than you get banned because you typed the word "kill" or you get punished because you ping spam your low HP team to retreat Dragon Pit cause you saw a Global Ult (Ashe, EZ, Jinx) flying in their direction.

Unfortunately by the very nature of LoL there is no way to stop toxicity. When you have a competitive team based game where you are teaming with strangers... it is just inevitable. Might as well try to change the nature of man... or manchildren.
Voice comms.
There is way less toxicity in voice comm games than league, because most of the abusive people are high pitched or insecure for reasons and when confronted outside of just text chat, they shut up

The game was fking toxic, the more you go back, the more champs where stupid. Kassadin was the stupidest stupidity I have ever seen in my entire life.
Say you have a function f and it has one argument x so you can write f(x). It seems in math that you can replace x with x+1 so you get f(x+1). It's ordered pair would then be (x+1,f(x+1)) and not (x,f(x)), right? So in this case x+1 took on x's role. But at the same time you are still wanting to refer to the new value x+1 in terms of x to see what happens when you put in x incremented by one into the function.
So is x just a placeholder and not the actual argument for function f in the notation f(x)? Should you think about what's between the parentheses as the argument and not the variable x as the argument?@@VaMage

Isn't it easier for Riot to just make a pop-up that says "You can mute your chat and pings anytime, go to your settings..." or to just make everything muted by default for new accounts and teach them how to unmute if they want to?

They really have been coaching their players to become the perfect little Tencent cash cows over the years. They don't want you typing, pinging, or god forbid actually improving and quitting the game, they just restructure the divisions so everyone artificially gets ranked higher. The fact that you would ever, ever give this company money through microtransactions when they can permanently ban you with an automated system whenever they want is absolutely mind blowing. Riot gets their orders from a predatory, calculating mega-corporation in communist China and they masquerade under the guise of caring about their players while they control their behavior and addict their minds at all costs. Just a disgusting ecosystem all around.

Incorrect statement, Tencent funds them but theyre very hands off outside of being concerned about their returns they're very hands off on the developmement and management of the game.

In terms of culture and the subject of this video, keep in kind alot of the lead devs now were interns etc before climbing the ladder but also all former players who were bullied and felt THEY need to change the community... @@jintachi its no coincidence that this is happening soon after the ridiculous white washing that happened recently in China. Funding is the most important thing for a game company and Tencent being a quasi Chinese government company would absolutely threaten it to get these changes. It is totally in line with what China as a whole has been pushing in recent years and totally in line with something they do.
@@jintachithey literally don't allow the game in certain countries solely because of tencent, censor chat differently in OCE and Asia because tencent, preemptively ban people who criticized or are anti China to stream the game (see, Coco ch), directly pushes riot to make skins solely for the chinese market (see last year overflow of generic Asian ish and even a certain style of champions and reworks.
Tencent meddling in riot it's as clear as it gets. You can even say the infamous current riot (past 4-5-6 years) its on no small part tencent fault

But what I said was just a cliche, the reason people flame is because of stupid people making stupid mistakes one after the other and slowly bleeding the game out, not ffing a lost game, not trying to play their best (This one makes me insane. I always try my best in any gamemode so seing people literally playing with their asses just tilts me so much.) and stuff like that.
After playing for so many years there is a point where you know the game is over at 5 min, even if you could turn it around the stress isn't worth that 15 LP because if you count it, of 20 games like that you win 1 or 2 max, it just isn't worth it. It's even worse when it's not a ranked game, winning or losing doesn't mean shit and still people drag those games out for no reason while doing their best to lose, makes no sense.

People flaming or harassing others is not the root of toxicity. It’s the symptom. The root is the toxic game design. Which results to people being tilted a lot and then showing that. Making people play normals/arams as punishment for misbehaving in ranked is a prime example of toxic game design. As well as the ping problem. Or the all chat, which is disabled by default anyways and you need to enable it. The stupid after chat which you have to enable after every damn game and is literally useless now. The flame problem was pretty much solved a long time ago. You can mute everyone’s Chat individually, and entirely as well as emotes and pings. Anything further just limits the people who decided that they want to communicate and don’t care about a mean word thrown their way.
I said this years ago and I say it now again: I would rather have someone calling me every mean word in the dictionary and performing in the game to win, than some goblin who doesn’t type and punishes 4 other people through making the game miserable. I can mute anything and everything of the flamer. I can’t do anything about the trolling goblin. In fact I am putting myself at risk when I tell people to report them, which also seems to do fuck all since they most of the time play like that for several games now. To top it off: When I report the player and block him even after the game, why does riot think it is a good idea to recommend these people to me to invite them to my lobby. The anger comes from the people that Intentionally feed me.
As example: yesterday I had a game where this one guy who came support picked singed with ghost tp and Doran’s ring. He then proceeded to go toplane and proxied the waves. He was recognized by our top and even 3 of the enemy’s, and was still playing and ruining the fun for everyone in the games. Ty riot for this experience.

At this point, all u do to vent is soft int the fuck out of your own team.. they completely neutered any drive to keep winning cause of all the hand holding and babying that started with riot lyte. Man I found this video because I got a warning for chat in a game the other night which wasn't even toxic. I said that Vi fisted me, playfully, after she ganked us. This is after a game a while back where I felt like I got a warning for sending too many chats, none of which were mean but many of which were "prep for drake", "ward tri" etc with the rest being conversational. I feel like Riot is legitimately just trying to get rid of chat altogether, which sucks because I've met several IRL friends through LoL.

Unpopular position: I love league chat. I love the toxicity, I love the abuse, I love the banter, I love the trolling, I love the cringe RP, the threats, the gaslighting, the slurs, all of it. It is one of the greatest features of any game that I have ever played. And people do not appreciate this thing of beauty for what it is.
Removing chat is the best thing that could be done, the chat restriction does nothing, and even if you dont use the chat you can get chat restricted, all it takes is 3 reports on your account and your account is restricted from chat.
"Fight toxic players", guys, the world is toxic, you can't live in a bubble in your fairy game. Nowdays, anything is a reason for chat restrictions. We are reaching a ridiculous point.
Before I left the game a few years ago. They implemented ingame voice chat in beta. Where is it now?

I actually loved the bait ping, since I play support and sometimes jungle it’s nice to let them know to bait with just a single ping
for real im jungler and i usually use the "bait "ping when i try to countergank or want them to casually get engaged on by the laner.. now i dont even bother to type it and just be silent and observe

Aww man... Why aren't people more like me. I could never even imagine that the bait ping would resemble or mean such things and happily used it sometimes instead of the missing ping when my teammate does smth bad to me.

Small correction. Need vision replaced the "hold" ping, which as adc main I can say was extremely useful even after they changed the name from freeze to hold which was dumb.
A COMPLETELY unnecessary gutting on their end. Like no reason whatsoever. I used it fairly frequently to tell the jungler who is nearby to hold my wave while I recall or my support to do the same thing after I die and so on. Really useful. Those fucking n*ts at rito are so r*d

You can always mute chat, if you're a sensitive person who never wants to deal with toxicity. However, removing chat is catastrophic for those who play with random people!!!
Plus, trust me, chatting is fun. The rage moments, the jokes, the everything that shows that you play with a human who can interact with you are some of the main things many people play this game for.
Remove all that, and the game will be lame.

i miss so much some years ago were everybody get to be a lil toxic with no problems at all. Its a very competitive team based game, its inevitable. There's still the same amount of toxicity but now i am 500% more tilted because i cant even comunicate properly in the game. Like literally, this week i got chat restricted because i told my 0/7 adc to wait the wave in the tower, with no swears or anything. I told him literally, stop dying vayne. BOOOM honor gone, go play normal game. And the support tells me i cant point my team mates mistakes so i deserve it. Is riot trying to destroy the game or smt?
I played a lot of league since 2022 and I never once came across the interpretation of the bait emote as a rope. I've seen it used to spam someone exactly once.
With that said, I think the "on the way" arrow and the "assist me" flag emote accomplishes the same thing.
Ultimately I don't think these changes are a fraction as bad as many people try to make them out to be. They're all fine. /all chat is primarily being used as a weapon against your enemies to tilt them by flaming them and inciting infighting, so there's plenty of incentive to get rid of it. Pinging allies alive is also used nearly exclusively to flame them (the remaining 5 % being used congratulatorily after someone gets a kill) so removing that feature is fine too. The limits on enemy missing is fine. You can follow a missing ping up with the danger and caution pings to accomplish the same communication as you would before.
The only reason people are upset is because people love nothing more than to complain because it makes them feel better about themselves when they can judge something or someone else negatively.

What do you mean the 'Vision Needed' replaced bait ping? Bait ping was replaced with "Enemy has vision and what's worse.... They've replaced the "Defend area" ping with "Vision Needed"... It's so sad... I've used it so often...
Edit: what did the defend area (shield) ping have, that it was so much toxic, that it was removed?
The phreak death threats thing is a little silly to the point where im doubtful it happened.
Firstly, he and the other riot employees have no prerogative to put their real names on social media for announcements or otherwise- much less pictures of themselves or their families even if they put themselves in update videos. Even though this makes it easier to find someone's address and family a million times over, it brings me to my second point-
If he were receiving real and fearful threats, people showing up to his house or mailing things there, deleting his account or telling social media about the issue is only going to validate them, and tell them that it's the right address and they should keep threatening him.

Riot is litteraly combating toxicity in the worst way,
They want people to not be toxic, yet they are toxic themselves
And they are advertasing toxicity by it being only way of people communicating Riot paid attention to.
Using permabans to punish toxic players works in the opposite way making the punished wanting everyone to feel the same way and just increase their toxicity even more.

To be honest, the only one to blame is the league community itself. Soft people still complained about toxicity when there is a mute option and is so accessible with one click, not even need to type the command anymore. Grow a spine, life has no mute button and people still move on.

Riot temporarily removing the bait ping from the game to create a different symbol I can get behind. But limiting MiA pings to 3, not being able to ping your teammate's ultimate, etc, is so upsetting. You can mute everything in this game anyway.
I genuinely believe that if team voice chat was just a normal feature and not locked behind parties, the game would lose a lot of toxicity. There are a lot of toxic games that have voice chat, but even in those games people have limits and I think its because people have to actually verbalize the horrible things they wanna tell their teammates, instead of just typing it out. There is a lot more pushback when someone has to actually say something horrible instead of just typing it out.

I think more communication is the answer. People wouldn’t be as toxic if voice chat was there. I think this is proven in Riots other game Valorant. The game is definitely still toxic to a degree but far far more tamed imo
The problem with league is the fact that you can't communicate anyway in the chat without risking getting chat restricted or muted based on something that you say. Joking, Soft flame, Critique, or flaming in general, all could get you a swift chat restrict or ban. There is way too much focus on the chat rather than the trolling, inting, and AFK'ing of teammates which prompts people to be paranoid; thus a higher chance of being toxic in the chat.
P.S. - A game that has a mute function for pings and chat should not ban anyone for chat anyway, unless they actually say things which are horrible (Death threats, Racism, Heavy Harassment, etc).
And since new Report in game feature, there is soooooo much more bans, cuz ppl see something ever so slightly offensive, and jsut push report...

Another thing I can't wrap my head around, is how Riot is "combating" toxicity so hard, yet they make one of the toxic things, (insert lane) diff into literal titles you can get for you to display in the loading screen. Like what.

Honestly, i also think that ganking is a really toxic form of communication to the enemy team that you want to win and you want them to lose, so they should limit the jungler to 1 gank every 10 minutes and force them to stay in fountain.
the reason people are so toxic in league is very simple:
lack of communication.
the reason people in other communities arent as toxic is because they are utterly free to speak as they please, exceptions being slurs and all of the ways you can say kys in.
imagine youre a child and you come home and your parents berate you the entire time youre home for years. no matter what you do you get flamed by them, ofc youre gonna start being in a bad mood as soon as you go home even when they dont flame you, then one day you insult them back, as a result you get beaten and your mouth sewn shut so u can speak anymore, ofc youre gonna get madder and madder and everytime you do get a chance to speak you completely blow up. this is riot, league and the players rn. this is why they're toxic. if riot added more freedom in chat people wouldn't feel so shit everytime they entered a game and the flame would die down a bit/to equal levels of other games communities. the fact of the matter is also riot gets put on the spot light for their toxicity simply because they themselves put themselves in the spot light, making a big fuss about someone making someone else feel slightly uneasy or angry or sad for 5 seconds using a word. if they ignored flamers and toxic people who ONLY chat and focused on people who TROLLED the entire landscape of the community would become so much less hostile and more calm

For me, this is an upgrade. Voice chat is way better than text chat.
I even barely use text chat in my games. Because I know, noone will respond accdg to my chats. It will just results toxicity.
In voice chat, I'll know who's to communicate and who's gonna be muted.
It's more accessible too than text chat.

i have no empathy for riot or their company (especially phreak), ill never give them death threats or wishes (even tho theres a different between death threats and death wishes), which ive seen him get alot of death wishes and very little threats, riot knows the player base needs these systems and dont care, if riot actually cared for the frustrations of the players the game wouldnt be in the state that its in, u know what creates the games massive toxicity, having games completely ruined by others, be it the hard inting and greifing, the bot/buyable accounts, the scripting, the lack of proper communication causing things to be much harder and i cant just type a paragraph explaining the idea of a thing in league so we need better forms (vc would be nice they would just need to properly monitor it and punish the toxic people)

What really gets me is I /never/ asked Riot to be my Daddy, and I deeply resent them acting like I did. If someone is bothering me I can mute, I think the people crying need to give themselves a reality check and just mute instead of giving their power away on a platter. Indicative of the state of the world we live in though.
Removing the bait ping icon was entirely justifiable, League players are toxic and when they're on their unhinged emotional tirades it hurts the experience of other players and makes them play worse.
That's why I /mute all, communication can be advantageous but not if I'm getting flamed for a mistake and getting into my head about how much I hate the League community instead of paying attention to the game.

It's optional, just like text chat and pings. We lose nothing by having it added for those that want to use it.

I was playing on my 2nd acc after a long time and i noticed that Riot had disabled even Team Chat. I had to go to my in-game settings and enable both All Chat and Team Chat.

He is right. Riot taking away comunication is terrible, a reason that i don't think was in the video is that people when they are mad they need to curse somebody out to calm themselfs. Now if is gonna be limited comunication they will not be able to do that anymore and they will int the games which is way worse than cursing in chat

Edit: imo by patch 16/17 we will be playing in a closed space, where you cannot ping anything and your own gameplay will be an overlay akin to if Quinn hits you with a Q or a Nocturneult. Bonus points if you get banned from attempted pingusage

In Hearthstone, there no chat feature only emotes like Greetings, well played. But player still found ways to BM by spamming well played after a misplay or spamming greeting when they are about to win. As long as there’s some sort of communication exist, people will find ways to abuse it
