YES! The Granite 4x4 Mega V1 was my first intro to RC as well. It holds that same special place in my heart too. Since then I've upgraded that rig to 3S and it's been a BEAST!
Good test of this machine! I brought one of these home today from the LHS, my first hobby grade RC. I had the idea of keeping it stock and upgrading it later on. I started seconding guessing myself after I found a smoking deal on the Granite 3S BLX online. The BLX has been ordered, so it looks like the Mega is going back. I was nervous about the Lipo batteries and the special handling they need, but some videos watched and questions answered by the folks at the shop have me feeling ok about using them.

After you click on the car just look at the smart batteries from Spektrum, find a 5000 mah 2s pack and make sure it has an ic3 connector. If your brushless the connector is an ic5
@@PilotRyanMedia Hi so just picked it up yesterday thanks to your video you had me sold. Now they did sell me and a charger and a 5000mah lipo battery (said it will last a lot longer than the 3300nimh. Question is the lipo will last longer cause it's 5000mah vs 3300mah haven't tried the lipo yet but other than that what's the advantage?
Got this for my son as his first serious rc. Now that he is hooked what is a good charger to upgrade to? He is using the standard 3300 battery and the additional 5000 nimh. Hoping for something that charges a bit faster.
Go to my website and click the Horizon Hobby logo after that look at Spektrum Smart items. They have a ton of chargers. You can also get to their website through the truck link in the description. www.pilotryanmedia.com/
Nice video. I'm thinking about getting this or the Losi SCT. Can you please tell me the pros and cons of having a 4wd vs 2wd? The Losi is 2wd, but it comes with metal gear box and metal plates in the front and rear. This would be my first RC car for me and my 10 years old son. The price difference isn't that much ($189 for the Losi SCT vs $229 for this). Both can be upgraded to Brushless too and lipo compatible out of the box. Thank you so much for your time!
The brushed mega has 48p gears and a plastic motor mount. To get it to a 3s blx is at least $200 for the Arrma upgrade parts kit. I learned this the hard way buying a mega for my son then immediately dumping $$ to get it to blx status. The brushless version is really the far better value.
Thanks for the detailed video Ryan. I know very little about the hobby but from what I've read this seems to be a good first truck which I will be buying for my sons upcoming 8th birthday (which will be my introduction to the hobby as well @ 40 years old :)). I subscribed to your channel, as I see I have a lot to learn :) A couple questions: Being that my son is still little, I think I will stay with Nimh for now. Do you know how long the stock battery lasts? Regardless, I would by a spare Nimh as well. Can you recommend a battery that would work for this? I don't know if something larger than 3300mAh would work in this truck, but I'd like to get something with the best battery life I can without having to modify anything on the truck, while staying with Nimh.
@@PilotRyanMedia Thank you for all your help Ryan a couple weeks ago (both within this messaging and privately). I went ahead and ordered this just now (through your link) based on your help!
