      I did a ton of shopping around for canons recently and landed on the 90d for the price and content like yours I've seen. We upgraded from a T3i so long over due but gave us access to the lenses we had as well as adding more to the library some of which we already owned. The video was and audio jack were the selling points for me. 1 SD card for me is no problem. C-log issue wasnt a concern for me, if it ever becomes a necessity we would be looking to spend a ton more.

    I didn't use 5DIV however, used all the previous iterations i.e., 5D, 5DII and 5DIII. Agreed, the full frames create better image quality than the APS-C bodies. But the my recently purchased 90D has other weapons for me to use. It's a blend of DSLR and MILC. There's eye-tracking AF in live view which is present only in mirrorless cameras. Moreover, as a wildlife photographer; I can crop more, the burst is at pro-level and I can also stack extenders with my super telephoto native lenses when necessary and still get AF at small apertures in live view.
    Thank you for the video.

    I have both of these cameras. For both my photo (portraits, behind the scenes, sports, etc) and video things (shorts, vloggy bits, etc), the 90D won out as soon as the Oct. 2019 firmware (24fps) update arrived.
    I keep my 5Dm4 these days as a secondary or remote camera for both stills & video.
    The ergonomics & video versatility are big for me, and I've had no concerns or complaints about the stills.
    The 90D performs very nicely in low light, especially when you load that Technicolor/Canon profile for video use.
    But they're both very nice anyway.

      And considering the huge price difference between the 90D($1500) and Mark IV($3200), you are not really getting that much better performance from the Mark IV and less features. So the choice between these Two cameras is pretty obvious!

    I own a 90D and would trade it for the 5D in a heartbeat. Really like what the 5D offers. It is just too far out of my price range. But then I would be moving up into the mirrorless cameras if I had that much to spend. But I still like that 5D.

    I have both cameras. With the 5D Mk IV I get near total success rates in terms of out of focus and image quality fails. When I take the 90D out I get a much, much greater number of fails, often the fails outnumbering the keepers. The 90D I find is at home on a tripod and dislikes being hand held, whereas the Mk IV is equally at home on tripod or hand held. Also, lenses that will work efficiently with the 90D are much less available and more costly than those for the 5D Mk IV. If I had to part with one I would let the 90D go and keep the 5D Mk IV, even though I would definitely miss the articulated screen.

    Great vid bro. If I'm honest, I preferred the photos from the 5D mk IV, but preferred the 4k videos from the 90D. However, I would overall choose the 90D, because it's more versatile features suit my style of shooting. Only downsides to the 90D for me is the one card slot & lack of C-log.

    • @loukimein6229
      @loukimein6229 3 года назад +3

      I would agree. Plus, to counter the lack of clog, you can always add cinestyle to your pictures profiles. It ain't clog, but it gets the job done. The 5d is way more expensive, and for the price I'd rather get the 90d and spend more on lenses and gear in general with the leftover money.

    Great video. Each camera has features that the other one doesn't, so really it's down to what suits you best. Both take great pictures. The 5D is twice the price of the 90D, but are it's photos twice as good? Looking at the samples the answer has to be no. So if it's not down to pic quality, are you going to pay twice the price for dual card slots, full frame etc? At the end of the day, the 90D will take photos as good or sometimes better than the 5D, and that swivel screen allows for some amazingly creative shots. Personally, I don't need dual card slots or full frame, so I went for the 90D and love it!

    I was looking to upgrade to a 90D perhaps next year and the price remains the major factor for me. However, every image / movie that I thought was noticeably better was shot on the 5D mk IV, which I guess is why it costs more and if money were not an issue I'd go for the 5D based on the results you can achieve.

    • @TheVlatko666
      @TheVlatko666 3 года назад +1

      If you had the 2500$ there would be zero reasons going for a 5-year-old camera when R6 costs the same and it's far better than 5DM4. You can get R6 with RF 24-105 F4 L lens as a bundle which would serve as a great first lens until you get another one. For people who already own 5DM4 and have invested in EF lenses then there is no reason to switch for now, but if you are just getting into cameras, it would be way better to get into mirrorless right from the start since that's the future. Canon won't be making DSLRs anymore and they are not making EF lenses anymore.

    • @apislapis
      @apislapis 3 года назад

      @@TheVlatko666 Sound advice. I expect the 90D could well be one of Canon's last DSLR and the R range is where Canon is heading and is probably the best option for beginners. I already have invested in Canon & Sigma EF lenses so I'm not looking to upgrade to the new R range just yet and may well choose to use EF lenses on Sony instead. Photography is not my main hobby. Given a budget of £3k I'd buy a good synth or studio FX. I'd be stretch to £1600 for a body. It's the ability of modern cameras like my M50 & SL3 to shoot video of my synths that has reintroduced me to cameras. I still love my OM4 & OM2 and Zuiko lenses. I was interested to see what Kai could do with the Canon 90D and whether a 2nd hand 5D IV would be a better mid term option?

    • @timothylatour4977
      @timothylatour4977 3 года назад

      @@TheVlatko666 I agree. If you want FF, don't waste your money on the severely outdated technology of the 5D line. Put you money into the RF mount.
      However, if you wish to stick with APS-C, then the EF-S line is still a good line of lenses, (and the M mount is functionally dead), so it would make sense to go with the 90D.
      I hate to see the M mount go because I love my little M100 which is basically a pocket camera with an APS-C 24 Mpixel sensor.

  • @TheVlatko666
    @TheVlatko666 3 года назад +14

    Both have pros and cons, but man, you can buy two 90Ds for the price of one 5DM4, if you are going to spend 2500$ for 5DM4, might as well go for R6 which is miles better than 90d and 5DM4 and it costs the same as 5DM4. But if your budget is 2500$ then go for 90D, and buy some used lenses, since if you cash out 2500$ just for the body, either for 5DM4 or R6, you won't have any money left for lenses. RF lenses currently are insanely expensive and barely better than EF lenses, and the used market is non-existent for RF lenses.

    • @auksmann
      @auksmann 3 года назад

      I am sorry, but I cannot agree with you on either point. I actively use both the 5D Mark IV and the R6 and definitely prefer 5D image quality (especially for stills) to the R6. On the other hand, as for lenses, the RF glass is much much better than the EF.

Many of the photos I have taken of my kids, with the 5D, years ago are far superior to the 1200D, I just miss the full frame, now before Canon drops the Mark IV, I have decided to go ahead and buy it today, arriving tomorrow, very excited. Speaking of weight i have both the sigma 18-35 f1.8 and the canon 16-35 f4 is and i tend to take the canon if weight is important or shooting static things like landscapes. The sigma kicks ass and takes names in low light and people pictures.

    The 5D without a thinking twice

  • @timothylatour4977
    @timothylatour4977 3 года назад +11

    For the vast majority of shooters, the 90D is a much better choice in 2021. The 5D iv has features most people don't need, but clearly the FF sensor is much better for low light, probably by 2 stops. That might be hugely important for some, but probably not for the vast majority of enthusiasts and even many pros. The newer technology and design of the 90D (e.g. Digic 8, flip out screen, slightly higher resolution, better burst shooting, much better video, and a price tag less than half that of the 5D iv), makes it a much better choice for most. Add to that the cost of EF-S lenses vs EF lenses, and it's a no brainer to me.
    As for the comparison photos, the comparison you conducted is not valid. When using an EF lens on the 90D you are mis-matching equipment. The 90D is unable to take advantage of the big EF lens and as a result produces a weaker image. Test after test has shown that crop sensor cameras perform better with lenses designed for that sensor than they do with FF lenses. The Canon line of "pro" EF "L" vs. "consumer" EF-S lenses is a perfect case in point. Moreover, my own experience has consistently validated this for me; day after day my EF 24-70 f/4 "L" lens does not produce as good images as my EF-S 18-135 "consumer" lens on my little Rebel SL2. (I use the "L" lens on my old 5D ii.)
    Therefore, comparing an APS-C camera with a FF camera -- using only a lens designed for the FF camera -- is not comparing apples with apples. You should shoot the 90D using a comparable EF-S lens. For example, you could use the EF 70-200 on the 5D and the EF-S 55-250 on the 90D and compare those images for different settings. The image using the EF-S 55-250 lens on the 90D will be better than the image it produces using the EF lens. This is generally true, even though technically the EF-S lenses are not as good as the EF "L" lenses. Unless you compare the two cameras optimized with their proper respective lenses, it's not very useful information. (By way of analogy, if I'm running a race, I would rather have cheap shoes my size than top of the line shoes that are 2 sizes too big.) You should compare the entire APS-C system to the entire FF system, not just the camera bodies.
    Finally, weight. You say the 90D is "slightly lighter" than the 5D iv, but in fact it is a lot lighter. Using the 90D weight as a basis, the 5D iv is 27% heavier. Add to that the fact that FF lenses are bigger and heavier than their crop sensor counterparts, so with their respective optimized comparable focal-length lenses attached, the 5D is very much heavier! For instance, a 90D with the EF-S 55-250 lens attached weighs 1,076 grams. A 5D iv with the EF 70-200 L lens attached weighs a whopping 2,375 grams -- over twice as much. (And this is another reason why anyone with a crop sensor camera is foolish to be hauling around all that excess glass of a FF lens, only to get weaker images.)
    Pros who shoot weddings and such are welcome to their clunky 5D iv cameras. The 5D iv is a workhorse of a camera that can take advantage of the great "L" line of lenses. But the rest of us would be much better off with the 90D.

    5D for Pros, 90D for amateurs. What you haven't put in outro is that the lenses for 5D are way more costy than for 90D and for amateurs that is what really matters. I shoot with a Canon Rebel T6i and have been thinking of upgrading to the 90D. I mostly shoot macro (with the Tamron 90 mm f2.8), and occasionally birds and other wildlife, with the 55 - 250 STM. I'd consider a full-frame camera, but it would have to be 2nd hand, for cost reasons - a new 90D would already be stretching my budget. Which full-frame option should I consider, Kai? I´m not interested in switching brands, or to mirrorless, again for budget reasons.

      This is a great question Peter, from the sounds of what you mainly shoot the 90D sounds like a great option 👌 you have that extra crop in your 55-250mm for bird/wildlife and your macro shots 👍 I use full frame because of the crystal clear quality that the sensor offers at higher ISOs but a lot is dependant on your lenses too - your 2.8 Tamron probably does a fantastic job 👌 to be honest the 90D covers a lot of what you are currently doing. However, if you wanted to expand on that to video or more professional shoots like weddings etc than going full frame would be my recommendation and the 5DmarkIV is an incredible first step into that world. Lots to think about Hopefully that helps a little 👌👌

      @@goldenfrog6EsCoSes Every crop sensor shooter goes through the agony that you are going through -- I did, too. You are thinking that the FF system would be much better and that you're missing out. After all, everybody raves about how much better FF is. You are thinking that if only you had the budget, you would have the FF system, too.
      Well, I'll bet you would be disappointed if you suddenly had all that FF gear at your disposable. I know I was. The FF system is better in some ways, but for most people it doesn't make any difference. The crop sensors produce great images when paired with the right lenses. Many pros use only crop sensor cameras -- do a little research and you'll discover that fact.
      Here's a suggestion: Rent some FF gear for a weekend and shoot what you usually shoot. Then compare those results to what you get now. I would be extremely surprised if you noticed any difference. Then the mystique of FF will have been dispelled, and you can go back to shooting good images at a much lower cost. And I agree that the 55-250 is a great lens.
      The 90D would be a great step up from the T6i and still allow you to use all your current lenses. Don't be drawn in to the "pro" argument that accompanies all the talk about the 5D iv. The fact of the matter is that the 5D line has not kept up with technology, and Canon has been moving its emphasis to the RF mount for the future. If you still decide you want FF, then I recommend going mirrorless to the RF mount.
