      Thats not right Donna. Apart from the extra resolution and sharpness this new sensor has much more depth of information in it . You can significantly raise the shadows and not get all this mucky noise and magenta banding that Canons sensors have been plagued by. So Canon have finally learned how to make a sensor and its easily surpassing Son'ys current apsc sensors. If your happy enough with your 80D thats fine but I absolutely promise you this sensor is groundbreaking. Have a look at Michael the mavens dynamic range test where its easy to see how clean the sensor is compared to the competition. Canon will soon be releasing a 75 mpx full frame camera and they would only be able to get away with doing that if there was a major improvement in their sensor tech.

    One should probably not be chocked at the lack of difference in low light performance between these two. The 90D, being much higher resolution at the same sensor size, has a significantly higher pixel density than the 80D. In fact, keeping low light performance and dynamic range at the same level as the 80D despite the higher resolution of the sensor is an achievement in itself.

      @editwithrune3732 4 года назад +6

      Depends on the needs, If I only needed to shoot pictures then probably the 5d mark IV, but I like the versatility of being able to shoot both video and photos, so it would either be the eos R or Sony a7 mark III, the Sony does almost everything better than the canon, but I’m just much more into the color science and the lenses for the canon system, so personally I would grab the Eos R (or wait until next generation of the canon mirror less pro body)
      Happy shooting 🤘

  • @blackdarkghost1212
    @blackdarkghost1212 4 года назад +4

    It didn't surprise me to see that at high iso, performance of both is almost identical and sometimes better in favour of the older 80D. The two cams have the same type of crop sensor. 80D has 24 mp, which seems to be quite the right amount of res. Cramming more n more pixels on a small aps-c sensor is not a good idea at all. The more crammed pixels will have to be reduced in size to fit them in, which ultimately results in a reduced image quality due to poor iso performance and probably less colour depth. In a nutshell, more is less. If you have an 80D and you think 24mp isn't good enough for your needs cuz you need a higher res, upgrade to a full frame with more res. But if you shift to another aps-c simply cuz it has more pixels crammed on its crop sensor, that's not an upgrade. It may be a downgrade.

    Thx for the video. Canon probably dropped 24p so it won’t complete against their cinema line. A better low light video test film yourself indoors in the evening with just regular house lights on. Your test is well lit so there is little noise even under high iso. Most people who are interested in low light are filming events only in available light. But based on your tests it looks like low light performance isn’t better. Stating the obvious 4k is the only reason to upgrade if you’re filming video and the higher resolution for photography. Overall this line of camera 70/80/90d is easy to use and has great focus.

  • @RonH_music

    To anyone trying to get the 90D and don't need 4K, i would use the 80D and focus on other aspects of photography as there is no excuses anymore to not produce stunning images & art with such a capable body as the 80D and ditch gear acquisition syndrome. If you have a good quality lenses then just pickup your camera and make art, if you don't have a good lens then it is better to spend the money on that than throwing money on another body. Best wishes!

  • @markrigg6623

    Just some issues I noticed. The side by side comparisons show a difference in magnification between the 2 images, making it trickier to compare them. Also as far as Canon sensors go its the dynamic range will be what most people will be more interested in , which you havent tested. As far as I'm aware you havent stated wether this comparison was done with raw files or in camera jpegs. All these details matter when you do a video on image comparison.

    I found it difficult to compare the IQ for both because the 90D image on the right was a little magnified compared to the 80D image. The Kodak camera appeared like 5-10% larger, which makes it hard to compare.

    80D is so perfect it's very addicting to use. The focusing is just fun, screen or viewfinder. this will be hard to top by canon. i dont need 4k video, i dont have unlimited supply of hard drives. and aps-c after 2015 is not that significantly under full frame anymore. pair these with a 24 or 28mm pancake lense and it's also the perfect street camera. not into electronic viewfinder or rangefinder of mirrorless yet.

    Thanks! Finally an apples to apples comparison that's actually helpful! The 90D is clearly the winner here. Most of the reviews so far have centered more on video performance. Frankly, I couldn't care less if the 90D had no video at all - as I never use it. I didn't see enough difference between my current 70D and the 80D to upgrade, but now it's a no brainer. I shoot mostly macro and the increased detail and cropping potential is exactly what I want.

    24 Frames per second is an analog frame rate. That is the rate that film stops showing flicker. See Maarten Heilbronn video, “ Stop Pretending Video is film.” He doesn’t make unsupported assertions. He will explain that 24 frames per second is simply analog mythology. He will as also explain how video playback is vastly different from film projection. I recommend it if mythology isn’t your thing.

      Do you shoot video or take photos, mostly? If the latter, you get a LOT more megapixels with slightly improved dynamic range and low light performance. You get 10fps burst rate with the mechanical shutter and 11fps electronic first curtain shutter, 1/16000 sec top shutter speed, eye-detection AF in continuous shooting for photos and for video (in liveview) plus face detection AF through the optical viewfinder! There's improved exposure metering and this includes skin tones detection which assists face detection using the OVF.
      So if you mainly use the camera for photography then the 90D is a big step up. If you mainly use it for video you get the 4K, face & eye detection AF and clean HDMI out.

  • @alg6377
    @alg6377 5 лет назад +3

    I was really enthuiastic about this camera to start with, but now I have some serious doubts. Looking at jpegs shot with the 90D compared to a Sony A6600 at mid-range ISOs like 500 and 640, there's a distinct mushiness to the Canon. The 90D's jpegs look over-compressed (the 24mp Sony jpegs files are decidedly larger than the 32mp Canon!) and it looks like there's too much anti-aliasing going. The Sony's rendering of fine facial details is tack sharp; the 90D looks smeared and soft by comparison. I must say I'm not very impressed.
    I shoot mostly macro and I crop extensively. I don't shoot RAW, so sharp, clean jpeg performance matters to me. Unfortunately, I'm also heavily invested in EOS mount lenses. I think I'm going to rent and do some extensive controlled testing with my own lenses before I'd consider buying this camera. I may just end up getting the proven 80D instead at reduced cost

      @RogerZoul 5 лет назад +3

      ClasherXD There is nothing magic about 24p. People think that shooting at 24p gives their video some kind of wonderful cinematic look. It does not. People are just uninformed. Of course, by Canon leaving it out it makes it seem like they are taking something important away. I can not understand why Canon does such shit. It’s all a big non-issue. No one is going to suffer by making 25p video for RUclips. No one will even notice.

    • @cptbokah
      @cptbokah 5 лет назад +3

      Anthony Martin believe it or not the 24fps being left out was a deciding factor for a lot of people to stay away from it. It’s really petty if I’m being honest. 90d is an amazing camera for its price. Not to mention that it’s the same price the 80d was when it first launched.

    I discovered the concept of dla ( refraction limiting aperture) when I upgraded from 40d to 80d. And learned that f/5.9 was the point where dla started to show. On the 40d it is a number a little higher. However with 80d, I quit using 40d because size of the resolution gave me more ti work with in post processing. When I bought eos r, I pretty much dont shoot apsc cameras at all, except for when I want the apsc advantage on long focal lengths, in conditions where i dont need to increase iso above 100.i suspect the dla number for 90d, having about, if not the same sensor area, with more mp than 80d will have a lower dla. With 80d, I never exceed f/5.6.
