@Phil Jones65 I started with a 40d back in 2007, went Full frame with the 5dmk2 because I started with Film SLRs so i missed the bigger View finder. Crop Sensors can still make good images, and if the 90d has decent image quality, it might be a good Travel Camera for us Canon Users who dont care for small bodies, but Thanks to Airlines wanting to charge for Oxygen now, we need something smaller than a 5dmk4 or 1dx body.
@Phil Jones65 Well, I happen to be doing birding these days, so APS-C is absolutely perfect for me for the increased focal length. The other thing is it isn't really a fair comparison with Full Frame. A Sony A7 RIV for example costs 2.5 times more than the 90D. Plus, if you already have Canon glass and don't want to start from scratch and invest a ton of dough, the 90D is simply perfect. Last but not least, specs aside, for me you can't beat the Canon ergonomics. I would rather have a bigger body with a battery grip any day. With the Sony on the other hand is like having a bazooka attached to a credit card as the camera body, it totally lacks balance in my opinion. Can you imagine using a Sony A series and shooting with a 200-600mm?? Nah, not for me. I will be getting the 90D and I think it should tie me over for a long while. Say if it can last me 10 years, that would be enough. I doubt I will be getting any more cameras by that age.
Thanks for the review! I held on to my Canon T5i for quite some time. I finally decided to upgrade and was torn between 90D, M5, and M6. I mainly shoot stills - rarely shoot videos. I particularyly liked your discussion about ergonomics. I completely agree with you about the way the 90D body feels in my hand. To give it a somewhat fair chance, I tried all three cameras for two weeks. After having each one for two weeks, and watching your review the choice was relatively clear - 90D. I have been using this camera now for five months and it has not disappointed! I have travelled with it now on several trips and honestly, the size comparison between the mirrorless seems insignificant (especially when mounting larger lenses). Thanks again - great review!
THANK YOU. Just paused the video and ordered this, had been debating. But you had me at "I DONT HAVE THE TIME OR CREW TO MICRO MANAGE A CAMERA" Look I love full manual when I'm behind the camera, taking control, I love it. But when I'm in FRONT of the camera (90% of time) I need my camera TO BE my crew! Literally just ordered this so my M50 (which i ADORE) can now be my secondary cam, and travel light cam. Thanks so much!
I bought the 90D last month and I'm really happy with it. I have shot only three videos so far but, all my previous videos were shot with the M50 and, in my opinion, there's a pretty noticeable difference...definitely worth the price difference. The 120fps 1080p and the uncropped 4k (even if not the best 4k in the world) are the features that made me decide to buy the 90D...but it was a really good surprise to notice that also the 1080 in 24 and 30fps looks really good. Thanks for your great review, that helped me make up my mind!
One of the most comprehensive review on RUclips! I really enjoy hearing a different opinion about this camera. Very happy they just released an update for the 24 frames. Going to grab this camera ASAP
I've been looking into 90d for a while, in most of the reviews - it is mentioned as a good for vlogging - im really looking into photography is there any alternative for this one or 90d is a good choice for photography?
Im happy I upgraded from the 70D to the 90D...I pair the 90D with my Sigma 18-35mm f1.8 and the 1080p is better for sure- I compared them both with the same lens...the 4K is softer compared to my A6400 but very pleasing to the eye...I'm using a modified faithful profile with contrast all the way to the left, sharpness at 2, saturation at 2 clicks to the left....I think that works for me. A couple of questions if I may: 1) Can I buy C-Log from somewhere and install it in the 90d? I know it's onliy 8bit colour. Does it make a difference? I didn't care for Cinestyle really. I used a bit on my 70D but I didn't feel that I could bring up the colours in post. 2) since the 1080p 30fps (the one I use the most) is only at IPB standard at 30mbps (very low really), would I get a better image if I recorded it instead to my older Ninja 2 (which maxes up at 1080p 30fps) in ProRes LT? ProRes LT is a 110mbps- a lot bigger. Will that make the quality better or am would i just be wasting hard drive space? do you see the quality of the IPB standard at 30mbps deficient at all? and 3) Also, will this camera over heat if recording internally in 4k for over 30 minutes? What is that warning about videotaping in uncropped 4k? Thanks
I shoot professionally (and for fun) and your reviews are my absolute favorites, particularly the "fiddly-ness" factor. Increasingly, I'd rather have a camera with a decent image that's a joy to use, rather than the absolute best quality from a "fiddly" camera. Thanks for covering all the bases in such a fun, informative, and practical way!
I love my 90d. Its a workhorse. Not amazing at any one thing but not limited in any stupid way either. 4k, 30fps with no crop. Clean hdmi for use as a webcam, good stills, slow motion, decent preamps for audio, autofocus, good colors.

Hey Gary, WOW, sure a surprizing review on the Canon 90D, am I dreaming, LOL?? This is very interesting for me because I've been looking to upgrade my 70D Canon to a higher megapixel/4K DSLR. I purchased the Sigma 18-35mm F1.8 Art DC Lens awhile back, love this lens on the 70D; outstanding imaging. It finally gives me a close to prime 50mm with the 1.6 crop factor. I've been using it along with the Canon 18-135mm allows for a lot of variation with just two lenses. I think it's time for me to take an in-depth look into the 90D after watching this review. I mainly use my current Canon for landscape and general photography/video. Thanks for the upfront review from someone who uses Sony and Panasonic cameras, again my thanks Gary, take care!
@@OptimusFilmsRUclips None with the 90D, I'm thinking of purchasing after further review. I have the 70D w/ the Sigma 18-35mm f1.8, love this lens, outstanding sharpness and gives me 3 primes in one, 24mm, 35mm & 50mm. I bought the 70D as a kit with the two standards (18-55mm & 55-250mm, IS, STM) lenses and added a Canon 18-135mm for travel and Rokinon 14mm for landscape/night sky. I know Jarad Polin published a review between D90 and the new M6 Mark II mirrorless, side-by-side analysis. I am leaning towards the 90D even though it's NOT a mirrorless, still researching, I'll update if I find anything further.
Steve Carpenter Hi Steve! I’m totally the same situation as you are in. Also have 70D and 5 lenses for video and portraits photos. Thinking to buy 90d to keep my Batteries grip and lenses working with me. 70d is a good camera but for video it’s suffers from lack of 1080p 60 and noisy pictures in iso higher then 800. I’ve been thinking about mirrorless but a lot of gear keep me with DSLR. Have you bought 90D already? If yes, can you compare how far 90d from 70d in overall performance and hands-on experience?
@@The9q11 I finally order the 90D and should arrive around the 25th of April. After I have a chance to test it out, I'll post my findings with the camera once I've had some time with it. Did you pull the tiger and buy the 90D? I'd be interested in knowing your comment too?
You're the best man! Legit review! I'm just going to click on that damn buy button right now, canon officially confirmed that they're going to add 24p with a firmware update by the end of this month!
a) Canon EOS 90D Super Kit with EF-S 18-135mm f/3.5-5.6 IS USM Lens or b) Canon EOS 6D Mark II DSLR Camera with 24-105mm f/3.5-5.6 IS STM Which way would you go? Much heavier focus on photography instead of filmmaking.
What are the main differences between this and a GO PRO 9 if you run and gun? Can you run and gun with this 90D? stabilization is good if hiking, running etc???
There you go again with simple logic. This camera is good. It could have been GREAT. I'll admit I've been somewhat tempted by the extra pixels, primarily for photos. The video would fit most of my needs too although I really want ibis.
Yup. Totally agree. I need it to just focus for me and just work! Letting go of my GH3 for this because it sucks at Autofocus. Great review. Subbed. :)
It's interesting to see that snippet of your script! How do you use the script while filming? I've never seen you look off the camera a single time! Are you prepping a lot or what is your process? :)
Yes!!! thanks you for not crying like a baby about the no 24p, you have 25 if you want 24 so badly, literally no one will notice the diference between the 2 and use 50fps and 100 fps for really good slow motion! very good review! this is a really good camera for its price.
Thank you for emphasizing the useability over "proquiptment manual cameras". Heck yes they're great in bigger productions, but if you run-and-gun-one-man-team PLUS film yourself once a while... This is way to go
Not to mention that you can change settings to PAL and shoot in 25fps... I have the 80D since a while and might pull the trigger for the m6 Mark II though.
Do you use an external recorder with the 90D? I'm curious about getting an Atomos Ninja V to use with the 90D to use both as a monitor and recorder- I connected a monitor to the HDMI out and I got a clean signal but teh 90D's LCD went black so I lost access to the touchscreen! Would the same happen if I connect a Ninja V? or do both screens remain active and functional? has anyone tried this combo? thanks
Interesting question... I'd like to read some feedback about it too. I even wrote to Atomos about the compatibility of the new Canon 90D's HDMI output with the Atomos Ninja V one month ago and they still haven't replied...
After watching your video today, that helped me to make up my mind. I got the 90D body today, definitely an upgrade in video shooting functionality versus my tiny Canon M50 camera. Thanks for your video!
@@MaxSandberg I hope the major camera makes don't do away with crop sensor D-SLR's. I'm not sure why Canon didn't include the 24 FPS feature in the first place.
But what about photography?? I like to shoot night shots.. is it worth buying?? I like Nikon d850 and Cannon 90d.. which one should to buy?? I like more photography than video. Thanks in advance!
New to photography and buying this eos 90d at the end of the month, I plan on getting a few lenses to start, any recommendations? I was planning on getting 18-135, 70-300, and the portrait kit with 50mm and 10-18.
At about 9:38 you mentioned being able to stream for many hours with this. I disabled the auto turn off in the settings but my 90D will shut off anyway after about a half hour (Or tell me to hit the start/stop button even though i'm not 'recording') in video mode. Am I doing something wrong? Cause even after that it'll still shut off on its own.
Hmmm, EOS RP or 90D? I bought/returned an SL3 which I liked a lot; just bought the EOS RP because I was tired of waiting for the 90D but now I'm wondering if I should return the RP for the 90D.
Thank you again for the awesome videos. I made my mind up and ordered the 90D for my channel. It was between the 90d and the Sony a6400 and the flip out screen with being able to change almost everything from the screen was the deciding factor for me. Lol.. I really thought hard on this one and some day I may still get the a6400. Thank you again
Does the Panasonic GH5 compare for a better RUclips camera than the canon 90D or vice versa???? And why? Because I’m trying to decide what camera to get since I just been using my iPhone!....
I've had only one DSLR, an EOS XSi. I'm looking to breathe new life into the lenses I have for that body: Sigma 70-200 2.8; Tokina AT-X Pro 28-70 2.8; EF50 1.8 STM; EF 18-55 IS. I've been reading that the new sensor on the 90D may not work well with these lenses, even if AF micro adjustments are made. Any truth to this?
Excellent review of the 90D. Recently I said that i hoped Canon would not make mess of this model and it looks like they did a good job of upgrading it from the 80D. I guess I’ll have to buy one now. Move over M50, you’ve got company coming.
@@TheEverydayDad Early reviewers are quite positive, but they also tend to be sponsored videos. But, if what they say is true, then 4/3rd might be an appealing option for a You Tuber.
Thanks for the video. How is the 90D compared to the Sony a6400 (that you have praised in other videos) regarding shooting video in 4K? You mention that the 90D is not as good as the Canon EOS-R, but as I remember you prefer the a6400 over the EOS-R (am I right)? How do you rank this three cameras?
I'm currently in your boat, but with the A7Sii. The flip screen has me sold. And seeing as I'm doing more RUclips now more than "behind the camera" projects, I'm very tempted to sell a bunch of my Sony stuff. Like the Tamron 28-75 2.8 and A6500 + misc lenses and go all-in with the Tokina 11-16 2.8 that I already have and pick up a Sigma 18-35.
@@BenDurham I previously had the Sigma 18-35mm and Sigma 50mm 1.4 with the 77D. The problem I ran into before was mediocre af for photography and it was a much bigger/heavier setup. I do love canon colors and the rendering of Sigma lenses, but it wasn't as fun to use because of the weight. Now that the 90D has eye af I'm assuming it would be a different experience, but the size and weight are still going to be there. I think that's the trade off. Canon colors and ease of use, compared to Sony specs and lightweight.
@@BenDurham For only about $200 more than the 90D the a6600 has the same battery as my A7III and I can keep my lenses. It has the flip up screen, just not all the touch capability. If the 90D had C-Log like the Eos R it might be an easier decision.
@@nicholassmith7723 the thing is, I've used the 80D's touch screen and it's autofocus is AMAZING. I find Sony's tap to focus is incredibly annoying to use.
So say you’re a 31 year old with two young kids. You love family portraits and home video. You have an 80D and an A6300. The video quality of the 80D is soft, the video from the A6300 often looks a little funky. You want just one camera. What do you choose?
I always record at 60 fps, because it makes for a smoother playback when I slow the film down. The lack of 24 fps wouldn't bother if I bought this camera.
Another question 1700.00 budget, need 4K, auto focus, ease of use, flip screen easy to see, mic input, which camera and lens to buy. I seen lots of your reviews, GH5s, or Sony, and what lens would u purchase with each camera? Hope u answer, thanks :)
Hi I dusted off my old Rebel T4I, I want the 90D and I have the lenses 18-55mm EFS and the 55-250 EFS, dumb question, can I use these with the 90D? If I buy a sony A6400 can I use these lenses with an adapter? Also really want the MIC INPUT, and HDMI and the ease of use, should I go with the Lumix GH5 in your review. 90 percent will be shooting Video. Should I purchase the newer faster lenses with lower FStops? I also have Saramonic Blink 500 to plug into the mic input. I really like the camera body of the Canon it's like my old Rebel. I look forward to your reply.
I shoot stills, so a large part of my 90D never gets used. From upgrading to the 90D from my old and trusted 6D, the one thing that I miss more than anything is full frame. My wide angles lenses aren't and I miss them. I can see myself getting a 6D Mk II.

Hey Steve, whats your experience with the 90D + Sigma 18-35 ?
@@SCAerialsSteveCarpenter Did you get your 90d? And if you did, whats your thoughts.
Bought this yesterday and I love it already
I love your review. I am thinking of upgrading from 77d to 90d. The easy way of telling all pros and cons is fantastic. Cheers.
To the ones who bought it, along with the 18-55mm lens, was it worth it? Or should I save a bit more and go for the 18-135mm lens?
You're the best man! Legit review! I'm just going to click on that damn buy button right now, canon officially confirmed that they're going to add 24p with a firmware update by the end of this month!
a) Canon EOS 90D Super Kit with EF-S 18-135mm f/3.5-5.6 IS USM Lens
or
b) Canon EOS 6D Mark II DSLR Camera with 24-105mm f/3.5-5.6 IS STM
Which way would you go? Much heavier focus on photography instead of filmmaking.
What are the main differences between this and a GO PRO 9 if you run and gun? Can you run and gun with this 90D? stabilization is good if hiking, running etc???
There you go again with simple logic. This camera is good. It could have been GREAT. I'll admit I've been somewhat tempted by the extra pixels, primarily for photos. The video would fit most of my needs too although I really want ibis.
I think that’s a good way to put it, good but could have been great.
Mark Attardo it is sharper than 80d, if you crop heavily.
@@yixuz42 I try not to crop heavy on my M50, but would love that flexibility.
I LOVE MY 90D. I needed the nice body, Dual Pixel AF, flip screen, and the HEADPHONE JACK.
Nice! Glad you enjoy it.
Dang man! I’m sold on this 90D now 🤦🏼♂️ I was thinking EOS RP or 6D... but now this. Great video!
Dude you're easily my favorite camera reviewer!!!!
Very nice. Thanks for the great reviews and videos. Covered everything I wanted to know and then some .
How is it for Low light, I do a lot of low light shooting, and want to know if this is better than the 80D.
try the Sony a7 iii
Was looking forward to the All-I. Oh well
Thank you for emphasizing the useability over "proquiptment manual cameras". Heck yes they're great in bigger productions, but if you run-and-gun-one-man-team PLUS film yourself once a while... This is way to go
I'm planning to pick this up as my primary camera. Thank you!
Not to mention that you can change settings to PAL and shoot in 25fps... I have the 80D since a while and might pull the trigger for the m6 Mark II though.
There is going to be 24fps upgrade for 90D from Canon
When I sold the 600D and bought 7Dll and 5 mk lll, it was only then I realised how useful the articulated screen was !
I'm glad I'm not the only one who straps a h6 to my rig lol
How good is this camera in low light situations?
Luna Studio TUTS it’s pretty damn good, no grain at 6400 iso
The 90D is getting a firmware upgrade in late Oct. 2019 so it can shoot at 24 FPS.
If this is true, that great. Can't wait
Are you serious?!
@@MaxSandberg Yes. Duh?
@@asanmartinjr07 That´s awesome. I ordered my 90d two days ago not knowing that. This makes it so much better.
@@MaxSandberg I hope the major camera makes don't do away with crop sensor D-SLR's.
I'm not sure why Canon didn't include the 24 FPS feature in the first place.
Makes me wanna buy this camera lol
But what about photography?? I like to shoot night shots.. is it worth buying?? I like Nikon d850 and Cannon 90d.. which one should to buy?? I like more photography than video. Thanks in advance!
Mine is on order, get it Thursday!
New to photography and buying this eos 90d at the end of the month, I plan on getting a few lenses to start, any recommendations? I was planning on getting 18-135, 70-300, and the portrait kit with 50mm and 10-18.
MsMzphit I’ll recommend you the 24mm stm too
Which of 18-135 lenses do you think is better for video? STM or USM?
At about 9:38 you mentioned being able to stream for many hours with this. I disabled the auto turn off in the settings but my 90D will shut off anyway after about a half hour (Or tell me to hit the start/stop button even though i'm not 'recording') in video mode. Am I doing something wrong? Cause even after that it'll still shut off on its own.
Did you find the answer?
It's 1.6x crop on canon efs cameras apparently, not 1.5x
What about 850D? What does it lacks?
Hmmm, EOS RP or 90D? I bought/returned an SL3 which I liked a lot; just bought the EOS RP because I was tired of waiting for the 90D but now I'm wondering if I should return the RP for the 90D.
what is the bitdepth of the video? can it save raw video rather than 265/264 or mp4?
Awesome review! How is this camera in low-light, purely for photography?
Thank you again for the awesome videos. I made my mind up and ordered the 90D for my channel. It was between the 90d and the Sony a6400 and the flip out screen with being able to change almost everything from the screen was the deciding factor for me. Lol.. I really thought hard on this one and some day I may still get the a6400.
Thank you again
Does the Panasonic GH5 compare for a better RUclips camera than the canon 90D or vice versa???? And why? Because I’m trying to decide what camera to get since I just been using my iPhone!....
7:43 your focus is kinda soft while you wax lyrically about the dual pixel auto-focus.
That is footage from the Nikon Z6, the 90D footage is the tighter one (eg. 07:48 - 07:49)
It’s 1.6 times crop not 1.5
Tells you how out of it I’ve been. Congratulations on the 92.3 k subscribed. That’s awesome
Thanks so much Dan!
What lenses should I get with it?
Excellent review of the 90D. Recently I said that i hoped Canon would not make mess of this model and it looks like they did a good job of upgrading it from the 80D. I guess I’ll have to buy one now. Move over M50, you’ve got company coming.
I’m not following the no 4K 24?? Other videos says it has 4K 24, 30, 60 and 1080 120..
Help me decide with these two cameras. Panasonic g95 or canon 90d??
Hope you get to review the new Olympus 4/3rd camera later in November! Love to get your thoughts then about the perfect You Tuber setup.
I might check it out, I’m not that interested in Olympus cameras though 👍
@@TheEverydayDad Early reviewers are quite positive, but they also tend to be sponsored videos. But, if what they say is true, then 4/3rd might be an appealing option for a You Tuber.
Thx, What is your camera?
Canon actually has 1.6x crop factor. Great review though! Just ordered 90D to go with R6- since most of my lenses are still EF :-)
I switched from Nikon d750 to Eos 90D and i am super Happy, best value Dslr in market.
How is it compared to the m50? Worth the extra few hundred dollars?
Thanks for the video. How is the 90D compared to the Sony a6400 (that you have praised in other videos) regarding shooting video in 4K? You mention that the 90D is not as good as the Canon EOS-R, but as I remember you prefer the a6400 over the EOS-R (am I right)? How do you rank this three cameras?
This looks way better than the RP, but the real question is.. should I sell my A7III and Tamron lenses for it?
@@BenDurham I always use eye af for people or use expanded flexible spot to set my af point for products, etc.
Is this camera better than pentax for astrophotography?
So say you’re a 31 year old with two young kids. You love family portraits and home video. You have an 80D and an A6300. The video quality of the 80D is soft, the video from the A6300 often looks a little funky. You want just one camera. What do you choose?
80d, better grip, battery and no overheating issues
also, flip out screen
I always record at 60 fps, because it makes for a smoother playback when I slow the film down. The lack of 24 fps wouldn't bother if I bought this camera.
Hi Everyday Dad, which lens did you use or would you recommend for video shooting? Great video btw.!
Another question 1700.00 budget, need 4K, auto focus, ease of use, flip screen easy to see, mic input, which camera and lens to buy. I seen lots of your reviews, GH5s, or Sony, and what lens would u purchase with each camera? Hope u answer, thanks :)
I really miss using canon 😅
I look forward to your reply.
why the video is only focus for video???? what about photography?
I shoot stills, so a large part of my 90D never gets used. From upgrading to the 90D from my old and trusted 6D, the one thing that I miss more than anything is full frame. My wide angles lenses aren't and I miss them. I can see myself getting a 6D Mk II.
Hoping the price goes down when black Friday or Christmas , I would definitely buy one .
That would be awesome!
@@TheEverydayDad yep 😊
If you need to choose do you prefer Canon 90D or Lumix G90?
I heard it has a headphone jack too! I feel all cameras should have that
Yeah that’s a very useful feature, I never monitor my audio that way but for those behind the camera it is crazy useful 👍
The Everyday Dad you responded! I feel like it headphone monitoring is a big deal for how simple it is. What is wrong with the Micro HDMI?
Worth upgrade from t7i?
Which lens were you using for the vlogging (self video) of yourself at playground?
Thinking...planning on getting it now... hopefully can make it happen... 🤘
I’ve been searching and can’t find my silly answer, but thought you could help. Can you use LiveView and field monitor at the same time?
What lens were you using to shoot this video?
Finally that PC behind is organised .😂
Every now and then I organize it 🤣
Does it have 25fps for PAL counties as 30fps is basically useless for us in Europe.
Yes it does have a pal mode with 25 FPS 👍
