Seriously. This probably the only woman that has to say my boobs are down here. Guessing Canon figured it was easier to genetically engineer their models then get eye AF to work better.
As a Canon guy (who does ZERO video, so it's not a factor), it's nice to see a review that doesn''t spend 90% of its time bashing Canon and comparing to "Sony" ... if you're someone shooting high-speed targets like I do (aviation, airshows, military jets ... and with 400mm to 500mm glass), the last thing I want is the "tiny trainwreck" of Sony ergonomics (my opinion, not saying they’re “bad”, just not for me).
I know it probably wasn't part of the initial plan to have to mix 90D footage with GH5 footage, but it was actually really enlightening to see how the video quality compares, so thank you for that. (The GH5 looks noticeably better in my opinion.)
First time stumbling onto the channel and I have to say that I like the chemistry of it! Thankfully you didn't beat down the shortcomings of the 90D like the afroman Jared... He is relentless in slamming the Canon 90D as well as a few others. Quite frankly, it's more so that you can tell he's not a Canon guy. I'm coming from a T3i so the upgrade points for me are pretty significant! I shoot some sports so the 10fps is an awesome upgrade, the EYE AF is an additional perk not to mention the megapixel jump etc. If people would take a step back and really try and produce quality work with old equipment they would learn to appreciate the advancements we've had over the years!
Finally Canon made it to the same game the other companies were competing in. They are still well behind, but this is their biggest step in years. However, no 24p is still unacceptable imo.
@They Caged Non oddly when he was showing video mode menu there was only 60 and 30fps, is 25 hidden anywhere else? I'm fine with 30 as well, just gonna slow down processing and need more memory for unnecessary frames. Tho that was on M6II.

Very helpful comparison. I've been looking for an APS-C or 1" 4K companion to my 5DIV as I add more and more video work to my projects, and have done exhaustive research on the latest generation of Canon bodies. While the 90D seemed like a good match physically, I discounted it early believing that the latest mirrorless bodies were simply supposed to be better at video. As I researched each model, however, I kept finding limitations in the video that the 90D simply didn't have. Even the full-frame EOS R had the needless omission of DPAF at 4K, my primary need. Hearing this review confirm what I have reluctantly suspected -- that the 90D is quite "video-centric" has helped me reach the same conclusion, and I believe that it will best match my needs. Yes, I had hoped for more of true "flagship" quality APS-C body in a 7D III, we're simply not going to get that. A shame, as I believe Canon would sell a ton of them. But I must grudgingly admit that even my old 7DII was overkill for everything I needed except video, and that the 90D will easily meet my needs. The GH5 footage just looks ‘nicer’ in the latter end of this review. On to the Canon’s here though, both cameras look good. Nothing new or special in an already crowded market. I’ve used Canon cameras for work and pleasure for years, moved to the Sony A7 series of cameras which left me cold, onto Panasonic, Nikon Z6 (which was wonderful) and settled on the Leica SL. I am interested in the S1 range and personally not bothered by the weight/size of their cameras. I just hope that Canon can produce some gear for the mirrorless market that finally wrestles back those that left their party a long time ago.
DPReview - the hybrid shooting community are graciously asking you to please force Canon to explain why they're leaving 24p out of their cameras. It makes absolutely no sense and we just want to know if Canon is actively committing suicide.
Swearing at Subarus: You choose the things you need, and let *us* decide what *we* need. It's absurd to remove 24p. It makes NO SENSE WHATSOEVER. The M6 had it, and the 80D too. It'd be like removing the option to shoot JPEGs instead of RAW.

As we all know there isn't much m glass to choose from so adapting efs and ef lenses would be a must for me. Also I would really like to see if Canon has finally improved their dynamic range and iso capabilities on this new sensor.
The M mount uses the exact same protocol as the EF mount. The adapter is just a passthrough of the signal. AF will work just aswell with EF lenses. Dynamic range according to Fred Miranda is improved over 80D. It is still however behind competitors. But the resolution in M6mkII is unmatched.
I am a Canon shooter for 20+ years, I still shoot with the EOS 5 and EOS 1000nf. I was really looking forward to seeing the 90D as an update for my ageing 7DII. Nice video. An odd split of features on the cameras, though generally they seem nice. I've been a big proponent of the M50 that I've used for quite a while, but won't likely continue with EF-M now that they dropped 24 fps. For photo people the M6 mark II does look like a decent compact option.
No 24p in 4K!!! Canon keeps on frustrating me big time. It shows me they don’t wanna sell cameras anymore. I’m glad I don’t have to change my 80D yet, but If I did, I would definitely jump off the Canon ship.
I thought Canon had pretty much given up on their M-Mount. I mean it had a very limited lens range for a long time and then Canon announced their FF mirror-less with a completely new mount pretty much signalling the the M platform is dead. Why would they come out with a new body if they've shown little interest in backing up the platform with lenses?
M-mount seems to firmly be a consumer mount, which is why the assortment of slow aperture zooms and superzooms, along with a couple very compact primes is probably more than enough. The M-mount bodies are still sell quite well, so it makes sense to refresh their bodies in the face of heavy competition.

Nothing here beats my GH5 for video, so as I love my M5 and still have an EVF from when I used the M3, this makes the M6 II a natural addition to my light weight photography kit options!🥳
These are great entries but there's at least a couple huge downers: 1) the 4K is actually upscaled 1080 which explains why it's not sharp 2) these are both mounts with questionable futures in the long term. EF and EF-S are being replaced by RF and EF-M is a dead-end mount with no path to full frame. Canon has too many mounts so the future is very uncertain.
Cameras look pretty good to me except for the lack of ibis. I will not buy another camera without good ibis. It's just so helpful to have when using primes.
Modular built-in flash - remove flash module and place viewfinder module in the socket near the hotshoe. So, hotshoe will be available with installed EVF on the hole of built-in flash.
90D has All-I option like the 80D? Clean HDMI (without having to go into manual focus mode) on both? M6ii with a focal reducer for full frame 4K with DPAF sounds great... But, I'm holding off on new camera purchase until I see the next gen Sony video offerings. If there's no internal 10bit on a6700 then I'll just buy the X-T3...
What I'd be really interested to know is: What are the technical details behind this 4k cropped / uncropped that the 90D offers? What’s going on concerning downsampling, upsampling, pixel binning or whatever? And how does this compare to how Sony or Panasonic are doing things? Is the 4k as good as what we see from the other brands?
So I specifically asked that question and was told that the particulars will not be divulged... ever. So its looks like Canon uses Magic to resample the video. My guess is typical line skipping for the most part.
So they’ve something to hide there? The question is whether it’s something they don’t want the other companies to steal, or whether it’s something they wouldn’t be proud to admit to us. Apparently we won’t get a direct answer, but it'd be interesting to see a 4K quality comparison across brands.
No 4K 24p? That's silliness. I do love that they removed the 4K crop and (perhaps even more importantly) added 1080p at 120 fps. These two cameras need to have a baby. Canon - make a 90D with an EVF and 4K 24p, please. Make it weather-sealed, and give it a headphone jack.
I was ready to believe and drink the Canon "kool aid", then the "no 24P" slapped me in the face. And yes, if you are any type of videographer of taste, you will care if that feature is gone. Without the "filmic look" I might as well be shooting with a camcorder. At least there is a Sony camera announcement today to give me some hope.
Good review, thanks. I have a 40D and a 7D, with several lens. I have not delved into video with the DSLR. I have a 90D on pre-order at BH. We'll see how it turns out.
Noticed that you brought an EF-S 17-55mm f2.8 to use on the 90D. I had half expected that Canon would have managed to save, as one real surprise, an announcement of an upgraded EF-S 17-55mm f/2.8 IS II USM Lens and something like a new EF-S 60-180mm f/2.8 IS USM Lens, both featuring Air Sphere Coating (ASC) and enhanced weather-proofing. That would have gone a long way toward affirming Canon's commitment to APSC DSLRs.
I strongly dislike optical viewfinders, but that headphone jack is a big deal, and the ability to choose a video crop is sweet. I wasn’t expecting the 90D to be a first choice for video, but it is looking like a good upgrade for my 7D mark II, unless a 7D III comes out soon. Need that 4K and the 7D just doesn’t cut it anymore.
OMG...40, ahem...excuse me...your video on the 90 d and M6 MK ii was fantastic. Your first impressions are very informative and illuminating. My better half is thinking about buying the 90 d. She sites as her reason is the familiarity with the dslr body. I think I'll let her watch this video. Oh the yesteryears of being 40, realizing I was no longer young...ahem... As always, keep up the good work and keep em flying...
That was a great first hands on video! Humour, some great images/video, great info about the cameras. Excellent job guys. Nice panning shots, Chris. The EOS M6II should have a panning mode as the other current M-Series cameras do. It may be buried away in a scene mode setting. I love that 90D as an all-rounder, I was thinking of moving away from DSLRs completely, but that pulls me back. Having both DSLRs and mirrorless is more fun anyway. You get to use more skill and experience with a DSLR. How anyone can get a poor exposure working with a WYSIWG camera (mirrorless) is beyond me and some people do.
$2k in Australia for the M6 mk ii and 90D?? I think Canon have forgotten what market they are playing in with these cameras. From a canon fan I think the switch to the A73 is a reality now. It's $500 more with a whole lot more to offer. 2 cents
Oh look, another Canon camera w/o 24p. I’m not sure why you were dismissive about this point (“yeah yeah, you know it’s not there”). WHY isn’t it there?
Now that you guys are the fresh faces for DPReview, you should convince them to get a new logo to complete the brand refresher. The current logo looks seriously outdated. Just saying.
Wish this one have great improvement. You know there is dark corner in right side of photo when you use internal flash to take selfie with M6 using either ef-m 18-150mm or 11-22mm lens.
Cañón still does not get it. The Rx100 does more than this and also has a viewfinder. They just keep failing because they think they can hold back features and it will still work.
Hahahaha the Canon Crippler strikes again. That being said I'm still a Canon fan. Wow and Canon got people saying that if your into video you should go with the DSLR. Up to now all the other manufactures have been pushing mirrorless for video, Canon I applaud your mischievous marketing!
I noticed a Canon EF-S 17-55mm lens was used in the still shot (6m06s) docked to the M6 Mark II body. Is there some sort of adapter which allows EF-mount lenses to be used on the M-Mount M6 Mark II body?

Hi guys, I've just tried the M6 ii, what you don't mention in your video is how horrendous the shutter lag is when you shoot on continuous drive? The black out in the viewfinder and on the back screen is awful. To me this makes this camera next to useless compared to my 90D. Also the electronic shutter only works on single shot and not continuous drive? Pretty bad for a high frame rated camera !
As an M5 user, I’m not really that impressed. No, IBIS. No C-Log. No flip screen. No headphone jack. I’ll just keep my M5. Eye AF is great, and the high FPS is a good improvement. There could have been more here. Maybe the new M5 will be a more robust package, but it’s unlikely.

@@terranborn56 yeah but im still learning what i can about it cause never used a DSLR platform its far more complicated then a point and shoot
The starting was crazy I can’t stop laughing because I’m turning 40 this year too the Canon 90D video quality is awesome that’s what I’m going for
What I'd be really interested to know is: What are the technical details behind this 4k cropped / uncropped that the 90D offers?
Is it that much better than my 80D? Not convinced it is, looks good but I was waiting for a bit more punch, am I wrong?
80d Bros! Fistbump 👊
How does the wifi work on the latest Canon models? is it a quick and easy interface with your phone for transmitting photos?
I love Canon I just don’t understand their strategy. Great video explaining the 2 models.
iyn1911 I don’t waste my time in understanding strategies, just love their cameras and love shooting straight out right ♥️❤️♥️
Larry chen alert
He was an awesome guy to work with for sure!
I'm here for the jokes and the Larry cameo. Not a Canon guy, but lots of entertainment and useful stuff here as usual. Please keep up the good work !
I totally agree. No 24p is a punch on the stomach.
Just use 25p
Very nice photos guys.
This review seems to be all over the place.
How anyone can get a poor exposure working with a WYSIWG camera (mirrorless) is beyond me and some people do.
cooloox 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟
$2k in Australia for the M6 mk ii and 90D?? I think Canon have forgotten what market they are playing in with these cameras. From a canon fan I think the switch to the A73 is a reality now. It's $500 more with a whole lot more to offer. 2 cents
Did you all try the panning in the Scenery Mode? I was wondering how that worked. Waving from The Bahamas :)
That intro is every gamer that plays Gran turismo xD
First good photo I’ve seen Chris capture.. ever.
Wait!? Which one!? Tell me so I can only take that kind of photo from now on.
Audio was very good in this episode. Love to know what was used
Oh look, another Canon camera w/o 24p. I’m not sure why you were dismissive about this point (“yeah yeah, you know it’s not there”). WHY isn’t it there?
It's more my expectation that Canon will disappoint in some way, and they did.
Ah. Got it!
Are Canon likely to be able to fix the Eye Tracking in the Viewfinder with a firmware update? and How do the live screens do in bright sunlight ?
Cañón still does not get it. The Rx100 does more than this and also has a viewfinder. They just keep failing because they think they can hold back features and it will still work.
Why the heck is this video so smooth even at 1440p? Was the lens a pedestrian one or is the video soft as heck?
Please answer - Does Canon 90D offer 24 fps video if we change 'Video System' in Menu from PAL to NTSC ?
Hahahaha the Canon Crippler strikes again. That being said I'm still a Canon fan. Wow and Canon got people saying that if your into video you should go with the DSLR. Up to now all the other manufactures have been pushing mirrorless for video, Canon I applaud your mischievous marketing!
I noticed a Canon EF-S 17-55mm lens was used in the still shot (6m06s) docked to the M6 Mark II body. Is there some sort of adapter which allows EF-mount lenses to be used on the M-Mount M6 Mark II body?
Congrats Chris on your new adventure!
Which one has a better buffer ?
And does the shutter speed remains the same for 90d in live view ?
I didn't expect the M6 to be slightly more preferable for stills. I'm now curious about the M5II and potentially a 7D2 replacement if it ever happens.
BTW they said there won't be a M5-II.
On the Canon USA website, on the specs it states both the 90D and M6 Mark II can output 10-bit 4:2:2 over HDMI? Could you guys confirm this? I didn’t see this mentioned elsewhere.
No 24p. 4k looks super soft compare to the gh5. For video just keep your 80d, or move to Sony/Panasonic
The 90D has 24p the m6ii doesn't.

Here are the official Specs: MP4/H.264
UHD 4K (3840 x 2160) 29.97p
Full HD (1920 x 1080) at 29.97p/50p/59.94p/100p/119.88p
HD (1280 x 720) at 59.94p. I think you can use 25p in Europe which is close enough I guess. But the video image looks really bad compared to the gh5 used at the end of the video
@@sd3d1 . You're right I read the specs wrong.
Canon has to handicap their cameras in some way, otherwise it wouldn't be a Canon.
@Reuel T Comparing 24fps to new V old technology is not a like for like comparison or analogy, motion blur looking correct to the human brain is not something that can be updated with better firmware.
The 4K video looks so soft, I thought it was only HD.....
On top of that no IBIS....
They still have issues with somewhat soft looking video, although the cropped mode on the 90D does help. Still, when they get the sharpness back naturally I will feel another spit take coming on. :)
This is a brilliant video, very helpful. Chris was great as usual, Carey is a star. Hollywood beckons my son.
The way this sounds to a non-photographer: "Ohh yeah, gotta love the EVF on the 90D, although the dual-point pre-buffer AF doesn't pan as well as the MF view-finder. I like the weight of the SLR RAW burst mode kit, and how about that un-cropped ITR 4K!? Mark II, Love it!"
I think I need to watch more of these videos. All jokes aside, great stuff. :)
I saw the S curves in the thumbnail and knew it was RoadAtlanta. Great vid!
The M6II with EF-m 22mm or 32mm is a sweet combo. I would take the EVF too, though, and it gets expensive like that... :(
Thank you for doing that review! Super helpful!
The most important feature in 90D is its weather sealed! and it comes with a better kit lens.
I've owned an 80D since December 2018, would you say it's worth it to upgrade to the 90D or to just stay with the 80D?
As an 80D user who got his back in Fall 2017, imho it would be better to save your money and upgrade later on to the EOS R esp with the price of the R being around 1500~1700 on sale nowadays. (Of course our budgets and use cases/needs may differ tho)
Canon's like that kid you grew up with who couldn't quite get it together as an adult and you slowly drifted apart.
Thomas Wedding Cinema what happened to you as a kid mate ?
Yeah, when a friend can’t quite “get it together” that’s exactly what I do too... ignore him or her and enjoy my blissful life untainted by someone else’s struggling. 🙄
Hows the dynamic range?
The model blinks once every second a photographers nightmare. good models hardly blink.
Great review! Happy that Canon can still release competitive products in the consumer space.
No 24fps in full HD (1080p) either??? Why are they doing this? Other than that, it looks like a superb camera for RUclips creators.
Welcome to Atlanta! Don’t forget to check out THE VARSITY and don’t be too taken aback when they yell at you for your order...it’s a thing.
Is Fuji X-h1 better than 90d. I was looking for that camera since long time. I will go with any one of these cameras... Donno which one I will chose.
Wait for the X-H2.
upgrading from sl1 to 90d sounds good to me
I use the Sigma 18-300 OS almost exclusively with my 77D. Would love to have an equally sharp 18-300 available for the Canon M6 MKII. Otherwise not for me.
Did Chris ever get to drive the GTR? I need to know

@@niccollsvideo I want to know which is the best one for wildlife 7dmarkii vs 90D ? I don't consider about missing features like what wifi, Bluetooth, 4k etc in 7D2 .. I just like to know which one performs better in focus tracking and in low light !!
Under 1400usd , Which other option you may recommend apart from this

how does 90d compare to 7d m2 for bird/wildlife?
Now the 90D have iTR system, same as 5D Mark IV and 1DX Mark II, so the autofocus performance is top class, better than original 7D Mark II

Forget the cameras, loved that girls eyes. Been using M cameras for a while now and get good results even with the older models. I will wait, now, for the next M with an integrated EVF, hopefully not a pop up one.
Good results with older camera models or older female models?

4k looks more like 1080p on this camera.
Just Chris. JUST 👏CHRIS👏
What i can't understand about the 90D is why does the mirrorless camera have features that is does not? Why can't I add the same electronic viewfinder for example? Flip the mirror up into live view and it's a mirrorless camera...
