    Thank you, Ben, for sharing your important reasons why you upgraded from M50 to M6 M2! Why I am writing so late (this is recorded about four years ago by you) is that I recently purchased this M6 Mark II camera (used one) ! It was really helpful for, for example I didn´t know about the so called 180° rule and your advice for making smooth time-lapse videos was very precious to me! So all in all, a big THANK to you for this video! Much appreciated! Wishing you all the best!

      Upgrades are good if thé improvements are needed. To upgrade for features that you don't use obviously doesn't make sense. Some people upgrade just to have a "better" camera and end up regretting it because they realize, in this case, that they could have bought a few lenses or one insane lens instead. Think about the lens that you could buy for 1500 bucks and slap onto your m50 Instead of upgrading to an m6 and getting nothing that you really missed instead. I think that my m50 is so good and takes such great video and decent photos that all I dream of is lenses, like one of those amazing téléphotos for wildlife photography. Oh boy, oh boy. Or you could get another m50. There are some very cool things you can do with 2 cameras. Compared to spending for an m6, you would still have enough left over for a $600 lens. I will upgrade cameras only when I really need to and have the cash to spend easily.

    1. the M50 can also switch between auto focus and manual with a button on the back dial. 2. the M50 can shoot electronic (silent)shutter; they just hid it in the SCN dial. I like the idea of the little bounce flash on the M6 II, but I tend not to use flash with my M50 anyway. The only reason I would upgrade is for the 120fps at 1080. I've shot a few music videos with my M50, and have gotten away with 120fps at 720p... LOOOL

    • @benbjurstrom
      @benbjurstrom  5 лет назад +1

      My mistake for not realizing the M50 has the silent shutter mode in the SCN dial. I assumed it wasn't there since I never saw it in the menu. Should have done a google search before posting just to be sure. That said, since it limits the camera to auto exposure I'm not sure I would have used it much even if I had known it was there.

    M6 mk2 seems a really good camera, but for me, there's no real reason to change my M50 to this. Software features (timelapse, electronic shutter) can be upgradeable in M50 too. Missing buttons, dials of course not replaceable, but I don't need them. Because a few amounts of changing settings I use daily. The flash in both camears has a limited usability,ifI you want to use flash for various cases, you might to buy a better flash. Finally, EVF is priceless for me. If I'd need it to M6 mk2, I'll have to buy it separately.

    I might be making this move too...The M50 is my first camera that got me into this game. Love shooting with it so much but as I wanted to do more things, so many times i had the "aw man" moment realizing the feature i wanted is not available on my M50. The M6 MKII has all the stuff I wanted but missing from the M50. However the lack of flippy screen is kind of big deal for me. I use it a lot when doing low or high portrait orientation shots. Also it should be useful when mounted on a gimal.

    • @RockyColaFizz
      @RockyColaFizz 5 лет назад +1

      @@mirrorlessmemory The video quality is far superior on the A6400. As the 4K out of it is crazy sharp. The picture profiles are great as well. You must use an OSS lens. If you do it will be reasonably good. If you want silky smooth stable though you have to use a gimbal. Frankly, the stabilization on an A6400 with an OSS lens, is very similar to the M50 with a Canon IS lens, For your mic add a $15 small rig cold shoe mount, and you can put mic to the side, and flip up the screen. The A6400 really is far superior to the M50 in many ways. That said, the ease of use of the Canon is easier to grasp quickly, and the Canon menus are the best hands down.

Not sure if moving 'up, but back' to 7d m2 makes sense, but with wildlife I mostly use the viewfinder... I would love the quick settings changes with the extra dials in the very same situations though... why does Canon make it so hard with the trade-offs and can't make the body a bit bigger to include a Sony a6* style EVF or a pop-up EVF... not sure if I want the extra bulk of 90D and neither the AF versatility/settings of 7D2, nor the upgraded Dual focus AF (talking about the EVF situation in both cases and acknowledging the difference in AF tech). I love my EVF for photography and flip out screen for blogging. But the biggest factor for me is that the M50 is so much more affordable. I would hope that if a M50 MK II comes out it will maintain the same price point. I would hope they add a 2nd control dial for it, but if not, I’ve been able to live with it as I grew up with the Rebel series. BUT that 32mm (f1.4) will be my first get after the kit. I'm glad that you spoke favorable about the electronic/digital stabilization. I have hopes that (hand held) video with the 32mm (no IS) can be acceptable.

    Hi Ben, nice comparison review! At 1:50 you were describing how you liked that the M6 Mark II has a manual/auto focus switch. Does the Canon M50 not have the ability to switch from manual to auto and back? How is it done on the M50? Could you please elaborate on this alittle more? Thanks!

    M50's built in EVF makes it $150 cheaper right from the beggining, especially if you still want to use the hot shoe for anything and even more so if you want to bundle discount the EFS lens adaptor from a place like B&H. Imagine spending $300 more to get those two add ons... Does that evf compare to OVF for manual focusing Low F macro? Also can you elaborate on manual focus mode with the M50? Do you really have to use the camera menu, no dedicated button?

    EOS M50 does also have an electronic shutter but it is rather limited on functionality. To me it annoys most that you cannot use the AWB-W setting (you can shoot in raw and develop in camera with AWB-W though). The electronic shutter is in the SCN-setting.
    That speed setting is nice. EOS M50 on P does not go below 1/60s, nice with the 22 mm but way too fast with IS. EOS M was just the opposite as it went to 1/30. I think they should automatically base that on the lens.
    I was considered M6 in 2017. I could not make my mind between M6 and M3 and I ended buying G9 X Mark II. When I saw the M50 I wondered the single wheel but IMO touch and use the wheel works nice enough.

    I’m gonna upgrade from M-50. I never use EVF. I hate the swivel screen on M-50-HATE IT. I want the screen in line with lens. Plus it feels like one wrong move, it’ll snap off. Plus better specs. Now if Canon will create a full spectrum of lenses (come -on!) And why doesn’t firmware support in camera multi-exposure?????? The 5DMk3 onwards has the best in the business. It would be VERY HELPFUL for creatives to have this capability. Please Canon, we like your cameras, make each release as thorough and complete as possible, you’ll win in the long run (think Fuji).

    • @AdrianChoPhotography
      @AdrianChoPhotography 5 лет назад

      Christian Lawrence I don’t think it’s really a fair comparison. The M6 II is an APS-C camera and it would be better to compare it to something like the Sony A6400 (or A6600). The RX100 has a tiny 1” sensor. I have an RX100 VII and use it sometimes for some video but not for stills. 1” sensors are tiny compared to APS-C.

      @@AdrianChoPhotography yes I agree Adrian. 🙂 the reason I asked was that I own the rx100mk7 but iam trying to convince myself that the m6ii would be a better B cam to go with my eos R which is my primary shooter. The rx100 is awesome, but I find it a bit fiddly for stills. The video is great mind you. The m6 just feels better in my hand and easier to adjust using the dials, also the menu similar to the R. But as you say like comparing apples and pears.🙂🙂 might get the m6 and keep the rx 😉😉😉 just won't tell the wife. Have a good xmas 🙂

    • @AdrianChoPhotography
      @AdrianChoPhotography 5 лет назад +1

      Christian Lawrence I’m a Sony full-frame shooter and I can’t stand the RX100 for stills. Every time I look at any photo from it I can’t get past the poor image quality. HOWEVER it is great for video especially as the RX100 VII has video eye AF which makes a huge difference if you are vlogging or recording people’s faces. And yes I agree the RX100 is a bit fiddly because of the size although you get used to it.

    • @okaro6595
      @okaro6595 5 лет назад +1

      @@ChristianLawrence If you so prefer, it is a much bigger camera but sizes are a matter of opinion. I have M50 as my primary and G9 X II as my secondary. For me RX100 would be too big for a secondary camera.
      Note that EF-M and RF lenses are totally incompatible with each other. Both systems, however, can us EF and EF-S lenses. I would not get a secondary incompatible ILC system. I would focus on the R-series, they will introduce smaller lenses.

    I've enjoyed your insights but can you please advise me on the following - for a beginner youtube video maker if you'd choose a camera mainly used for youtube videos (80% time for video, 20% for photos) and considering these prices on ebay UK for NEW M6 Mark ii are about-ish $775 (camera + kit) and for NEW EOS M50 on ebay UK are about-ish $570 (camera + kit), which camera would you finally choose? Assuming it is M6 mark ii, does it rise up to its price tag, is it worth the money difference in terms of its new features?
    PS, I was also contemplating again for youtube videos an used sony A6400 with stock kit on ebay at the same price as a new M6 mark ii but the price of sony lenses really scary me and not sure if it is worth it?
    I'm looking forward to making this decision in the following days and your comment would be very much appreciated, in a nutshell I'm torn between the models above and I just want to make a decision that would yield best price/value ratio while providing innovation in terms of camera features.
    Anyone reading this comment that knows a thing or two about above cameras can also comment it will mean a lot to me. Thank you in advance!

    The Canon M50 doesn’t have clean HDMI out on it. You have to turn off the info and set it into Manual Focus to get a clean signal out for, the HDMI port, or else you get all of the onscreen display info. From what I hear, the M50 Mark II does have clean HDMI out though, just not the original M50.
