Hello Ken, I have been using Nikon D5300 and D5100 paired with Sigma 105mm lens for intraoral dental photographs. I still am unsatisfied with the photo qualities. Should I buy Canon 90D with 18-135 mm lens or Nikon Z6II with 24-70mm lens in order to shoot better photos and videos as well ?
Thanks! I don’t think anyone has ever worn one out. I remember the story about one day Nikon service realized they had a camera in that had a couple of million shots on it - and worked fine. Thanks!
Another no nonsense review from the best in the business . I only just bought a new 7d mark ii a few months ago but perhaps this would be slightly better especially for macro with the focus bracketing but not enough to change and I love the pro build quality and custom controls . I mainly shoot Birds in Flight and perhaps this might have the edge ? I think when the R6 (or rumoured aps-c R7) comes out they will be the ultimate for Wildlife/Action and hopefully reasonably affordable but mean time I’m very happy with my camera and canon lenses
Except for the Sony A9 I’ve never used a mirrorless that could keep up with autofocus. Stick with what you have. I hope new canon EOS-R series changes this. Thanks!
Great review. I've just sold my Nikon gear which included the Nikon 200-500 a lens I was never keen on. I am seriously thinking of the Canon 100-400 ii with the 90d. Be a good lightweight, wildlife setup and the 100-400 ii is extremely sharp. Also thinking of the Tokina 100mm macro which I read your review on. This review has helped 👍
I love my 100-400 L IS II! Always the right choice, as is the 90D. Such a better choice than some of the (I’m too polite to say dumb) choices made by many other folks. Thanks!
See for yourself at my written reviews www.kenrockwell.com/canon/eos-r/rp.htm#highisos and www.kenrockwell.com/canon/90d.htm#highisos they’re very similar. Real question is usability and that the 90d can shoot more than twice as quickly
@@KenRockwellTV Thanks for the links and your suggestions, Ken. I looked at your High ISO images for the 90d and the RP. At high ISOs the RP images are much cleaner with less noise than the 90d. A lot of what I shoot is indoors with less than ideal lighting, so high ISO performance is important. It appears to me that the RP noise levels at high ISOs are about the same as the 6d II -- and both have much less noise at high ISO than the 90d. I'm selling my 80d and have been trying to decide which to replace it with -- RP or 90d. I'm now leaning toward the RP for the better high ISO performance. I learned a lot from this, thanks for your help!
Great review, both here and at your website. Is it true that the view finder autofocus system performs poorly as some of the other professional reviews claim? I am looking at this camera for photographing birds in flight so it's important for me to get the right camera.
Regular Autofocus works great for me, not sure what the others are doing wrong. Maybe they’re using non Canon lenses or just not doing it right. Thanks!
Only you know you. 90D is bigger and more competent. Here’s my T7i review www.kenrockwell.com/canon/t7i.htm and here’s my 90D review www.kenrockwell.com/canon/90d.htm this is a big upgrade, especially as you’ll have more controls to make it faster to set - if you use those settings. I’d go 90D, but in doubt the photos would look any different. It’s a matter of the 90D having more controls. Thanks!
Hi Ken, Coming late to discussion but hopefully you would get a chance to answer. Few questions , A) Some online reviewers stated that currently there is no lens suitable enough for 90D high resolution sensor. They claim that existing canon lens including 18-135 USM does not produce sharp enoug photos for the big sensor and that images are blurred if zoomed in slightly etc. Your thoughts on that please ? B) Would you recommend a mirrorless camera over DSLR as one thing I get from reviews is that mirrorless do not have any mirror induced shakre/vibration. Your take on that please? C) I have Nikon DSLR D810 which is full frame. I find it very challenging to achieve large depth of field and thinking to go to APS-C cameras as a result. Your take on that please ? D) For mainly a still phtotographer of landscape and portraits (no action or wilde life) , would you recommend 90D or another alternate ASP-C (M6 ii ???)? How would u compare it to Nikon D5600 with kit 18-55 and 70-300mm lens ? Thanks!
A.) look at the files at my written review and jusgs for yourself. Of course Canon’s lenses are sharp enough, just that “reviewers” aren’t full time experienced shooters and may not know how to get photos sharp. www.kenrockwell.com/canon/90d.htm#sampleimages and www.kenrockwell.com/tech/unsharp.htm and www.kenrockwell.com/tech/lens-sharpness.htm and www.kenrockwell.com/tech/2-kinds-of-photographers.htm
90D controls are like everything else; no big deal. The new magic infrared thumbprint reading thumb control on the 1DX III is still a one of a kind life-changing control. Thanks!
Ken Rockwell Crop sensor is king with anything telephoto cos you’re getting extended focal depth (for free) and only using the centre of the optic so super sharp throughout the frame! Bingo indeed!
Nikon makes no equivalent. No one does. The closest nikon is the D500 which has good autofocus and runs at 10 FPS, but it has only 21MP rather than 32MP, and nikon has none of the great support (at least in the USA) that Canon does. Also nikon offshores its manufacturing for lowest cost while Canon quality-makes its gear locally in Japan. I’d pass on nikon, unless the Nikon 200-500 lens is for you. On the other hand, nikon makes no lens like the EF-s 18-135mm nano IS USM. www.kenrockwell.com/canon/lenses/18-135mm-usm.htm hope this helps.
@@KenRockwellTV I believe on your site, you make a conscience effort to say at the end of the day, all these cameras offer amazing photos. I'm not a professional. This is more for hobby. I think I can start off with a d5600 with a 18-140mm DX and get some excellent shots. Reviews I read, tend to give Nikon an edge up when it comes to image quality over Canon. I'm still trying to figure this out. There is also a budget to contend with and the d90 is still pretty expensive.
I’d forget Pentax, and yes, this is a superb camera I’d generally prefer over a D500, but the best - for you - could also depend on factors unique to your situation. Thanks!
Agree with everything you say. I have a 90D, and recently acquired an EOS R. The ARE things I like about the R, but it has some downsides. In any event, I use both. BTW, my first SLR was a Minolta SRT 101, and after that I had a pair of Olympus OM-1s (great cameras, and very compact for the time), but in the mid- 70's I got a Canon F-1 and have used Canons ever since.
How is the 90D with the EF-S 17-55 2.8? I have heard that the lens might not be able to resolve the 32 5 CMOS sensor, but some people have said that they have taken great pictures with it. If someone has experience using this combination, please let me know.
@@KenRockwellTV thanks Ken. So - but😃 - which one would you get if you want a camera to do all of the above and can only buy the one? Decisions decisions I can’t make up my mind. Been watching all your reviews they are great sir
Ken Rockwell Ken been following you a long time. Along side my 5DM4, the 90D is better than what I thought it would be. Mirror up the AF is fantastic. Certainly functional in all other aspects. Frames per second, dynamic range, ergonomics, plenty of Ef and ef-s glass to choose from. I’m truly set for many years to come. Nothing both these camera can’t do. I do shoot Fuji XT3 for the mirrorless experience. But the 90D is a beast in its own right.
Hi ken!!!! Congratulations for your videos and great work!!! I'm an old school photographer and have been working with photo lab from about 25 years. I also make some experimental works with cinema films (16mm, 35, S-8) as well some experiments with large format, including some cameras made by myself. The most works i do are with rivers, jungle, etc. I own a 7dmk2 and like very much this camera... and i'm starting to experiment more with digital now... well, i was curious to experiment some fullframe sensor too, and i can find some good 5dmk3 used for a good price. So i was watching some of your reviews and reading some in your site and got the idea to ask your opinion.... where i'd notice some improvement or difference among the 7dmk2 and the 5dmk3 sensors? For birds photography i think the 7d2 "wins", but, as someone who is always experimenting, i was wondering what else can i get from the 5dmk3?? Thank you!!!! regards from Brazil!!!! Helder
Formats are totally different. Stick with APS-C for birds and far away things, and full frame for less depth of field and slightly cleaner images. Remember that to match what your 70-200/2.8 does on APS-C you need a 100-300/2.8 ($12,000 if Canon even made one) to give the same angles of view on full frame (5D series)
@@KenRockwellTV Thanx for the answer! The lens i use more actually are the canon 400 L f5.6 and the 70-200 f4. I also use them with a canon 35mm film camera, that give a very nice result!!! Well... maybe i gonna wait some time and get a newer fullframe like the 5d4. Thank you!!!!
You're right about you said Ken, Sony camera's color science is not really as good as Canon's, even when you shoot a video with a sony camera, if you tried tilting it lefts and rights, you'll notice that there's a wibbly wobbly jello effect, which makes it look like a lousy smartphone camera shot, i really love this 90d
It’s not so much the color Sceince, which is easy. It’s the art in how it sees cooor in the real world and leads to a pleasant representation. I way prefer Canon and Nikon over Sony, and this is very personal. Sony is way better than Fuji or LEICA. THANKS!
Top review Ken By the way how would you rate this against a full frame sensor for low light (d750 is selling for the same price not as contemporary but full frame specially with low light better high iso being the priority)
Look at the high iso sample images in my reviews for each camera and you can compare for yourself, no mysteries, at www.kenrockwell.com/tech/reviews.htm Thanks!
Im thinking of getting a 90D but ive been holding off because of the issues with certain lenses I have a canon 6D and the following lenses 70/200 L (non IS F4 24/105 Ff L 24mm 2-8 stm im thinking of getting the sigma ART 1-4 50mm would these lenses be ok on this camera at all?
All these Canon lenses are great on the 90D. I can’t vouch for the sigma; I only use camera brand lenses. Look at the EF 50/1.8 which has extraordinary optics almost for free. I love mine (link at end here). thanks! www.kenrockwell.com/canon/lenses/50mm-f18-stm.htm
I have an 80D that I use for bird photography and I am looking to see if there is a reason why I should not buy a 90D. One reservation I have is that the low light resolution may be better with the 80D, because it has fewer pixels and perhaps less noise. I have a sharp telephoto lens and resolution in low light matters when birding in the bush. Any comments please?
That's a common old-wive tale misconception. The 80D pixels might be bigger, but you have to enlarge them more for any given image size, so that advantage goes away - but the 90D is much newer and smarter so it's better at high ISOs. Look at my various reviews and you'll see that in actual shooting higher resolution cameras have the same noise (when seen at the same final image or print size) but retain more detail and resolution. See 80D vs 90D at www.kenrockwell.com/canon/90d.htm#new Thanks!
How does the build quality of this one compare to older EOS xxD series cameras, I have an old 40D that’s built like a tank and a newer 60D that still feels good but more ‘plasticey’ feeling. How is the 90D when it comes to feel?
Nowadays, you can theoretically replace the shutter at home. Wish I kept my 20D when its shutter died. 10 years later, the shutter would have been a commonly available part.
@@KenRockwellTV All the reviews said the 90D was a beast, It is. I thought long and hard on getting a full frame but because of the lens I have decided on the 90D, no regrets. Good review thanks
Ken, until I found your great review, mostly all I found was one well-known RUclips camera guy who has done numerous reviews about the incompatibility of anything but the newest Canon lenses with the 90d -- specifically the inability of "older" lenses (like a few yrs older) to manage the 90d's "pixel density", and what he calls these "older" lenses lack of 'resolving power'. In other words, the Canon lens that focused perfectly well on my 80d will not focus well on a 90d? Geez. Therefore, he says, the purchase of a NEWER lens is a must if I want to get images in focus on the 90d. What??? Is this true? Could you please explain. I'm trying to decide between a 90d or an RP. I do mostly business headshots and portraits, but general photography too. I love my Canon dslrs and the OVF and rarely use Live View. I have not been eager to go mirrorless unless I see a huge advantage in image quality and a GOOD viewfinder experience comparable to the dslr OVF. I'd use dslrs forever but I hear Canon has stopped producing them and eventually won't service them. Would appreciate your thoughts. Thanks for your help!
Obviously ignore anything you see on youtube. Every Canon autofocus EF lens made since 1987 works flawlessly on the 90D. Sharp enough for you: www.kenrockwell.com/canon/90d.htm#sampleimages ?
Video? I prefer my iPhone for anything video. Gives much better results than any other camera unless you’re a full time Hollywood pro with six guys doing just the lighting for you. www.kenrockwell.com/apple/iphone-14-pro-max.htm
Ken Rockwell I always wonder why they don’t start at ISO 50 on DSLRS. I still shoot film Canon EOS1v and Fuji 50iso slide film was my absolute favourite! The colour saturation is unmatched! I suppose you could stop the Exposure Compensation down but why they don’t have 50iso as the base baffles me! I never shoot over 100iso in brilliant sunlight! A roll of 200iso gives me plenty of exposure dynamics. +3/-EV being 100iso. I mostly like that changing rolls of film and manufacturers is essentially changing the sensor and that’s something digital users are stuck with! Algorithms on the sensor for digital I suppose and computer trickery but you can’t best chemistry. It’s getting there but you still have to set vivid modes and push the saturation to get anywhere close!

Is there possiblity to force the pre-flash? On my D7000 I used to press FVL (Flash value lock), and doing that my friends nevere blinked while a photo was taken.
So look at the sample images at www.kenrockwell.com/canon/90d.htm Not sure why some people worry about noise in the shadows; you're not supposed to be looking there. I worry more about how the picture looks ,which is color and tone. Thanks!
My canon 90D video files turn dim/darker when I view them after taking them off my camera. Is there a fix? I haven't seen anyone else have this problem.
be sure the cameras lcd Brightness is set to something moderate. Otherwise your computer monitor could be old and dark. Try upgrading to Mac, . Thanks!
Love your review's. I'm looking for a good 4K camera don't take much pictures, I'm using the M50 at the moment. I'm looking at this but the thing about Canon the colours are over saturated, any way of turning that down I'm using the Neutral profile, Sharpness and the rest turn down. Would you recommend this or the Sony a6400 I don't have much lens so I don't mind changing brands. As you said Sonys menu system is putting me off, Canon are easy to use the M50 is my first proper camera. Thank you!

Ken Rockwell yes, i. Have had it for a month and it is amazing like you said it would be. I was looking for a camera and once i saw your great review i was all in to order it
I never heard a better review!
Thank you!!!
Your camera and lens is fine. For better photos you need better lighting.
@@KenRockwellTV Thank You for your reply. Okay I'll try some different light setups.
Nice review! I wanted one before watching this, but now I might have to buy one today.
Thanks!
Fabulous camera, cant say enough about it , shot a wedding with it , photographed Rockport Mass. with it , and many other shoots..
Cool, huh? Thanks!
Great detailed review. 200,000 shot life expectancy on that shutter BTW.
Thanks! I don’t think anyone has ever worn one out. I remember the story about one day Nikon service realized they had a camera in that had a couple of million shots on it - and worked fine. Thanks!
My friend has a Nikon d4, loves it, shoots it daily.
Has over 400,000 clicks lol
Thanks!
Thanks Ken , I think Canon are heading in the right direction with these new R cameras
Fantastic review as always. Decision made. 👍
Thank you!!! Hope you love wherever you get.
Great review! Your reviews makes me want to buy. You should be a salesman
Well, this is a camera worth buying. If it sucks, like this camera, I tell you otherwise ruclips.net/video/9zbBdaK98fc/видео.html
@@KenRockwellTV Looking forward to your leica reviews
Hi Marc- my Q2 should arrive today. Look for it as I update www.kenrockwell.com/leica/q2.htm as I learn more.
ordered mine for a grand canyon hiking trip did a great job
EXCELLENT!! (You did the great job not the camera).
Thanks!
Excelent Review Ken !!!
Thanks!
Between the 90d and the RP, which has better image quality in low light at high ISOs? More noise with 90d? Thanks, Ken. Your reviews are the BEST.
Have you bought the RP ? If yes, how is the dynamic range ?
Great review, both here and at your website. Is it true that the view finder autofocus system performs poorly as some of the other professional reviews claim? I am looking at this camera for photographing birds in flight so it's important for me to get the right camera.
Regular Autofocus works great for me, not sure what the others are doing wrong. Maybe they’re using non Canon lenses or just not doing it right. Thanks!
Looking at upgrading from T7i. I mainly shoot concert photography/video and wildlife. Would I be happy with this upgrade?
Only you know you. 90D is bigger and more competent. Here’s my T7i review www.kenrockwell.com/canon/t7i.htm and here’s my 90D review www.kenrockwell.com/canon/90d.htm this is a big upgrade, especially as you’ll have more controls to make it faster to set - if you use those settings. I’d go 90D, but in doubt the photos would look any different. It’s a matter of the 90D having more controls. Thanks!
Hi Ken,
Coming late to discussion but hopefully you would get a chance to answer.
Few questions ,
A) Some online reviewers stated that currently there is no lens suitable enough for 90D high resolution sensor.
B.) both are just as sharp. Mirror slap only a problem between about 1/4 and 1/15 shutter speeds. You work too much.
C.) much better results will happen if you learn your camera. Not shre what it your problem since I haven’t seen your photos.
The 90d is the newest and best APS-C DSLR. It’s superb. Nikon is also good, what matters is how it handles for you.
i had Canon Cameras all my life from simple point and shoots to DSLR Cameras and they all worked so good i don't think ill go to any other brand
Exactly! I’ve tried them all - nothing better. Thanks!
Love this review !
Love this comment! Thanks!!!
Excellent review!
Thank you again!
Great review Ken as usual, how do you find the thumb joystick on the 90d, you reviewed the 1DX mkiii thumb stick as being amazing ?
90D controls are like everything else; no big deal. The new magic infrared thumbprint reading thumb control on the 1DX III is still a one of a kind life-changing control. Thanks!
This camera is an Aviation photographers dream!
Bingo! Thanks!!
Ken Rockwell Crop sensor is king with anything telephoto cos you’re getting extended focal depth (for free) and only using the centre of the optic so super sharp throughout the frame! Bingo indeed!
What do you think is Nikon's equivalent to this camera? Is it the d7500?
There is also a budget to contend with and the d90 is still pretty expensive.
great review!
Thanks!
Would you choose this over Nikon or Pentax?
I’d forget Pentax, and yes, this is a superb camera I’d generally prefer over a D500, but the best - for you - could also depend on factors unique to your situation. Thanks!
Wow what a review! Pretty sure didn't miss a thing
Thanks! I skip video as I use my iPhone instead.
Canon is absolutely my favourite camera brand.
Mine too!
Bravo! Thanks.
How is the 90D with the EF-S 17-55 2.8? I have heard that the lens might not be able to resolve the 32 5 CMOS sensor, but some people have said that they have taken great pictures with it. If someone has experience using this combination, please let me know.
Works great. These “lens won’t resolve” stories are old wives tales designed as FUD. See also www.kenrockwell.com/business/fud.htm thanks!
What about the comments about you need an extra sharp lens to take advantage of the sensor's capabilities?
Avoid Tamron. Thanks!
@@KenRockwellTV Hi ...why do you say that. So Tamron 150-600 G2 doesn't go well with 90d?? Do you suggest Sigma Contemporary over Tammy G2..
. . . Another feature I just found. AF point/s display can be shown in playback, p392. Not seen that on any other camera.
Hi! Most Nikon and Canon digital also do this if you poke around in the playback menu. Thanks!!!
@@KenRockwellTV I've been an RX10 iii and iv user for four years, previous Canons and Nikons did not have that. Sheltered life, me.
@@simmo303 Not sheltered at all, simply a new feature now in most new Canons, but not the older ones still sold today new. Enjoy!
For my first camera this or the rp? Seems like the 90d kit is the better deal
90d is best for sports and action and motion and long distance. RP better for still images of nature landscape architecture portraits and products.
@@KenRockwellTV thanks Ken. So - but😃 - which one would you get if you want a camera to do all of the above and can only buy the one? Decisions decisions I can’t make up my mind. Been watching all your reviews they are great sir
If it includes action, get the 90D.
@@KenRockwellTV thanks
Nice camera and good explanation
Thank you!
Just in time. Just got it. Bravo!
How do you like it? Thanks!
Started with a Canon AE-1 and have never used any other brand.
Good job!
Can this camera be tethererd to lighthouse or Capture One via USB cable?
Beats me! Thanks for asking but in never shoot with a cable attached; to me that’s just asking for people to trip and fall and damage the camera.
This camera made me switch from Nikon to Canon I went from Nikon Z6's to Canon EOS Rs, Canon is really good.
It is. It just isn't better than Nikon or Sony.
Live it! Thanks.
Canon is now doing silent recalls , I’d at least worry about that
Im thinking of getting a 90D but ive been holding off because of the issues with certain lenses I have a canon 6D and the following lenses
70/200 L (non IS F4
24/105 Ff L
24mm 2-8 stm
im thinking of getting the sigma ART 1-4 50mm
would these lenses be ok on this camera at all?
Is canon 90 is good for wedding photography??????
It’s Excellent. Thanks for asking!
How does the build quality of this one compare to older EOS xxD series cameras, I have an old 40D that’s built like a tank and a newer 60D that still feels good but more ‘plasticey’ feeling. How is the 90D when it comes to feel?
I forget. Canon makes no junk.
Nowadays, you can theoretically replace the shutter at home. Wish I kept my 20D when its shutter died. 10 years later, the shutter would have been a commonly available part.
Wow! Thanks.
would you recommend this or the eos rp for scenic photography and filmography? I am concerned about the ability of this camera to photograph at night.
I’d go RP for scenic. 90D is best for action and sports. Not sure what filmography means. Thanks!

Pentax still makes cameras?!?!

No AF assist lamp!??? WTF!??? Come on Canon! They are putting 45cross Type sensors in the top of the range Rebel! Can it shoot ISO 50?
No. Full specs sample images and review at www.kenrockwell.com/canon/90d.htm
Seriously considering up grading my original 7d with either this or a low milage 7d mkii.
All good. Thanks!

Great review Ken, thank you very much! My question is regarding AF. What do you think, is it better on 90D or on Nikon D500?
