I remember five or six years ago when I first was interested in becoming an illustrator, I discovered this video. After this, I was obsessed with painting little worlds in jars and got hooked with water color. Now I am in my junior year of college (for illustration!) and just rediscovered this video... this brings me back! :)
You have one of the most easy-listening voices I've ever heard. So rare these days so find someone that appears so comfortable and relaxed. Best to you!
amazing, thanks so much. Your style is awesome. For people asking why the characters are in jars, welcome to illustration, where images tell a story. Use your imagination!
wow....not only very talented artist, but incredibly relaxing tone of voice and pleasant to listen to! Definitely interested in seeing more videos! Beautiful artwork!
Just today I said to Hubby I would love to get into illustrating.. Alison you have inspired me to start.. you are awesome and I love your style. Thanks so much for this video.
Thank you Alison. Nice to see a fellow artist's work. Being an artist myself I find it hard in what direction I would like to go and where I should be heading with what I can do. Any advice for a struggling painter? I prefer oils and acrylics myself. I continue to ask myself where do I see myself in 5 yrs and try to plan, but La s change.
great demo, you successfully pointed out the basics, while pushing on some of the more intermediate and advanced processes. I recently graduated with a BFA and still found this very useful, also, pointing out the specifics of the products your using is always a plus, as it is so important. Thanks! great vid
oh my gosh, I really loved this. I really want to switch over from the kind of fine expressive artwork that I have been doing to something with ink and water. Oh dear, I cannot afford to take classes right now but really want to learn. Can u tell me if illustration classes primarily use pen and water? If they did then i am totally interested.
You are an amazing artist! I just starting my research looking for my path to become an illustrator, thank you for your videos! God bless you from Nashville,Tn,USA. B-)
This is amazing, by The way the fantasy style of the paintings make The viewer forget about the fact that animals Are In formaline botte. Amazing style.
Wow!! That was amazing and so easy!! I'm a artist and I've always wanted to learn how to do illustration art, but it was always hard for me since I'm into realism a bit more. And I'm such a perfectionist i can get a little frustrated at myself lol but i really like to learn this new skill. Fantastic job!! Thanks for the video!!!
Excellent video. Although it doesn't go in-depth on illustration techniques, it really gives us some insight into it. Alison, could you do the underpainting of this sketch with Raw Umber / Burnt Umber so we could see how it compares against the black ink underpainting?
So cute I love the magical concept brillant! You can use anything for illustration its' based on what the artist media style is, also yes there is a lot of ink involved.
I still remember my first art class like it was yesterday, teacher said: "Rule No. 1: Do Not Work Over Your Work! Lefties draw right to left. Righties draw left to right. Period" -A
your are my inspiration bc i love painting i feel it is connected to my heart ... But i do not have a In class experience in Painting. Is that possible to draw like you ? or it is just a my interest and that is it .
Hello. Im a beginner, and I was wondering about the process after i finish drawing the pictures to my book. What happems next? Do i just send them to the publisher with the words already on the page?
Hello, I'm looking at studying illustration at university. What advice would you give to someone new to illustrating as I only have experience in Fine Art?
I like ur vedio!!!! It helps me a lot! I am drawing for kids with iPad. I am not an expert but you can enjoy cute drawings and calm voice for relaxing!!
I used my series 7 for inking once and the ink got into the ferrule, which destroyed the brush. I haven't inked with a good brush since. I was using a drawing ink. I was surprised to see this. Do you have any suggestions for keeping good brushes safe when using ink?
Wash out your brush like every 1 or 2 minutes. I dont use ink anymore as i use graphite for my underpaintings but I do the same thing just using masking fluid. Dont let the ink dry!
When you want to draw from immagination, you actually want to draw from memory (: so, learn the anatomy of every subject you want to draw (animals/people/buildings/plants) and draw SHAPES not just linework. Once you learn the anatomy, you need to sketch that subject from references in diffrent poses over and over again, until you feel that you're able to draw it without refrences. This is the point where you begin to be able to draw from your imagination (: once you archive that, you can start to develop your own style ^^ hope it helped

It did help. I'm lazy and that sucks, hahah. I want to be able to draw cool things fast though its a process like in everything. I feel like i have the artistic spark but havent really gone for it. I think its time.
Loved the video! Having followed many other illustrators I can upon one that used a large range of inks I was unfamiliar with. I love ink pens but find it very tedious at times, so it was great watching your videos and getting introduced to a different style of ink. :-)
I'm curious why Alison uses this brush grip with thumb and middle finger. I'm always interesting in learning new drawing/inking techniques. Looks like it might be for better control but it seems really unnatural to me when I hold it that way.
Steven Venn : hi! My guess is that's how she learnt to write/draw as a child. Iv always had a wierd pencil grip (thumb over the top) too and years of frustrated teachers and lost pencil grips (those rubber things for training kids fingers) couldn't fix. That may not be why her pencil grip is different, just my guess 😊

Hollywood4Fun you must have a great affinity for vocal fry. I appreciate her commentary but her voice makes me want to clear my throat, continuously 🥺
Thank you all for your amazing comments!
Why is everyone is so tied up in the animals being in a jar? It's an art people. Love this.
Wow. That is so beautiful.
I guess I gotta first learn how to draw with a pencil before I can get to inking or coloring.
***** don't be afraid to try inking and coloring, you'll learn by doing it.
It's like riding a bike. Practice, practice & practice. You'll get where you wanna be 😉
I LOVE this technique.
I also would like a print of this. So imaginative.
amazing, thanks so much. Your style is awesome. For people asking why the characters are in jars, welcome to illustration, where images tell a story. Use your imagination!
I adore your voice and your way of explaining things is just wonderful. Thank you for sharing your knowlege to us.
wow....not only very talented artist, but incredibly relaxing tone of voice and pleasant to listen to! Definitely interested in seeing more videos! Beautiful artwork!
Allison, those instructions are exactly what I have been seeking. THANK YOU! Your employer is lucky to have you.
Not only is the technique flawless in this example, but thank you for using calm background music.
And thanks for the video! Inspiring.
Just today I said to Hubby I would love to get into illustrating.. Alison you have inspired me to start.. you are awesome and I love your style. Thanks so much for this video.
Very beautiful, you make the leap to illustration feel easier for an artist that has never had exposure to it.
This is an excellent video
Thank you Alison.

I’ve never been to Opus because I live on Van Isle but I have oil brushes from there and I LOVE them
Mind blown! I didn’t ever try the grey-wash with diluted ink. Great tip about the ink brush too. Beautiful, fanciful drawing.
your illustrations are so beautiful. They remind me of some really cute books I used to read as a kid.
Alison, you crushed this vid. Great job.

loved your video!
Those creatures are very interesting. Do they come from a certain series, or are they just for tutorial and video purposes? I'd love to know. :)

Good work and enjoyable Thanks
