Mark is the best. Knows his stuff. I did his 6 day workshop a couple years ago and it was awesome. Highly recommend! Also, his Geneva paint line is the GOAT.
@@jeffcrossley4757How do you like them so far? I got some Winsor newton artisan from a clearance sale but they keep lumping and stuck when I try to mix the colors with brushes. His paints look so buttery I'm tempted too lol
this is extremely helpful, especially for someone like me who loves color but doesn't have a strong eye for it. thanks. a teacher of mine several years ago taught us this but I'd sort of forgotten.
No one is better at explaining color mixing that you. Your videos have helped me a lot throughout the years. Thank you! You need to put a “thanks” tip button on your videos.
Love that hat. I live in Marietta Oklahoma. A ways away from you but I sure would like to be able to drive there and study with you whenever I could. You are the best instructor online. Easy to listen to thank you so much for sharing all that you do.
Dear Lord, I finally understand why I know so little about mixing colors and why I`ve always avoided doing it. Thank you so much for your excellent explanation. At school, we`ve had so many years of art lessons, but we`ve learned almost nothing about mixing colors. I would have gladly exchanged at least half of those lessons for lessons about color mixing. How they could ignore the most important basics is beyond me. They were teaching us a foreign language without introducing us to its ABC.
your method changed my life. stumbled onto your videos years ago. this simplified method puts you in control of your colors as well as the reason why they work or don’t work. also keeps one from hiding behind not having “the right paint” to do realism. it forces you to think your way thru the process which eventually sharpens one’s eye.
My problem is that when I finally get it mixed right, then I find out that I don't have enough for the area I wanted to paint and start all over with uncertain results...
I’m so glad I found this channel. Color is my worst and you’re making it very possible for me. I’ve got friends in Austin maybe someday a class… I use acrylic and I am seeing just how I can take what you’re saying to how I can use it. Wow this feels good. I’d been pretty frustrated
Newbie older aspiring artist here……I’m was totally mesmerised by your video. I love how you repeat yourself, as a lot of online tutorials blabber on and I miss loads…..you’re mesmerising…… I’m going to try this tomorrow! I will put a glass chopping board or clear plastic wrap ( no laminate) over a picture or travel brochure and see what I can do……so excited! Oh and I’ve no oils yet as I’m new to art so will try in acrylics…….. Thank you.
I truly can’t thank you enough for your knowledge! You are a true Master and I feel blessed to have come across your RUclips channel! Thank you infinitely! ♥️
I’ll be purchasing some of your Geneva paints in the future when I use up the large order of Windsor Newton paints I bought before I learned about yours. I really appreciate your videos - they’re excellent. I’ve studied at college under some very talented painters but they weren’t as fully generous as you with their knowledge. 🙏
New follower here - I think this is the absolute, best instruction on mixing color, I've ever watched. My college instructor wasn't even close. I learned so much! Thank you!!
Thank you Mark my fiance purchased your paints for me and I followed your videos and I am just amazed that I was able to achieve this realism Thank you so much you are an amazing teacher and artist 🎨
This is a great reference for color mixing… I’ve learned so much about color thru my years of tattooing and making oil paintings and this right here is one of the best explanations I’ve ever seen!
I teach all my students this method and make sure I always give you credit. This is such a great demonstration and I appreciate finding you. It has really enhanced my art journey and I can’t thank you enough!
Fantastic! quite literally the best colour demonstration and tutorial I've seen and explained in such a way that really helps you understand what you are learning. I only wish I'd had you as my art teacher when i was younger. Thank goodness for RUclips and people like you who are now helping so many to learn.
Yeah I have heard people talk about warm it up or cool it down. I much rather keep it simple and just talk about color. Intensity or chroma is also interesting if you are composing something. Great video I definitely have learned more on this one about how to reach a color goal than any of the others I have been watching. I really appreciate you taking the time to do and share this content.
So glad I found this teaching!! I have always struggled with color choice and mixing, but I know if I get more understanding through your understanding I will have confidence. Thank you for showing us!
Thank you so much for sharing your expertise(for free) and for making seemingly very complex things simple for me(us)! Really appreciate you so much for doing all this!!💪🏻✌🏻 I really can't "paint" well yet, but I'm hopeful; THANKS TO YOU MARK!😇🙏🏻✌🏻
You are a fabulous teacher indeed. Thank you for sharing your knowledge. I have always loved and have been good at painting in my early childhood years but that just came naturally with no real idea of what I was doing. Now I am retired and I want to once again get into painting and develop my skills. As I watch this video I see and learn so much that I knew nothing about. I value and admire your skills.
I'm so grateful to Mark for generously sharing his expertise. His mastery of oils is rivaled by his superlative ability to communicate the arcane knowledge of a skilled painter.
just discovering Mark's channel and it's awesome. So much great information and there's never any hard sell. The colour mixing videos Mark posts are absolute gold.
Not sure how I have never heard of complimentary opposites until now, but your color wheel has made an immense difference in my ability to mix colors. IT is so much easier than the way I used to mix by eye.
I have come to the point where I couldn't apreciate this channel more. There are so many artists sharing their knowledge by trimming down important and succinct information and cutting corners of important milestones, making it impossible for beginners and intermediate artists to even begin to grasp the concept of painting. This is such a precious resource, I can't thank you enough for making this available 👏
What an excellent teacher you are! Thank you so much for sharing your knowledge with us. I brought my oil colours today and feeling very excited ! (An absolute beginner here) wish me luck with my mix!
Thank you for the excellent instruction on mixing. I’m just starting to paint, and now feel confident that I can start mixing. This was all great, but your instruction on mixing for value first and then finalize the color match was especially helpful to me.
As using a limited palette as shown you never will worry about almost any (natural) colour as long you have the five colours. Thanks for showing what should be the basic for any aspiring artist.
French people is so sad because unfortunately you don't sell here your geneva oil painting !! But I do love your videos and I'm going to practice the mix of colours. Thank you for everything !!!
This was great. Thank you so much Mark. One question... I was wondering toward the very end of the video you discuss creating the color group for vibrant orange or blue objects and how not to contaminate your target vibrant color with the antagonist component of black... this is necessary because you mix black from burnt umber and blue... so in the second step you reccommend going with pure blue or pure "dark orange" depending which way you need to go. Is there no case here for using an unmixed black pignment, instead of mixing from burnt umber and blue? Couldn't one just start with a warm or cool black depending on whether the color group would be heading toward going orange or blue?
Getting back into model trains, need a way to save money by mixing my own paints to match prototype colours. A nice theory was needed and this is the first video that explains it for me. I visit a craft show today but did not know which colours I needed, I already had white.
I have been an artist all my life but never took to painting with brush. I found it too frustrating mainly why wont the colors just mix. Finally thanks to you tube not my art teachers but finally thanks to this video i now grasp why warm or cool colors matter during application. Thank you im eternally grateful an excited for this new journey
So much informations, all very interesting and lost of rules to follow. Soon i will begin to apply this technique and the fun will begin. Thank you so much.
I’ve painted digitally for years and years and colour mixing is what always scared me away from traditional painting…going to try soon with this as a guide. Thank you!
To say I’m a novice at painting is not an overstatement. This explanation is the BEST. I’m impressed with laminating over a gloss photo to aid in achieving precise matching. I’m assuming this would work with watercolors as well?
I always enjoyed your other video, so seeing new examples is great. Also, since I bought this exact paints from your store, it will make it very easy to follow once I try it myself!
This is a very good video and we learn a lot from it. The problem I'm having is to see this demonstration on a pic of portrait. Not still life with vivid distinguish colors. But small differences. It would be amazing to see you doing a video like that!

Approaches it like an engineer. Absolutely brilliant! Getting a complex task across with ease is the sign of a great teacher. Thanks Mark
Mark is the only RUclips artist who gave away the "secret" of matching colours.
All other youtubers only give us hints.
this is extremely helpful, especially for someone like me who loves color but doesn't have a strong eye for it. thanks. a teacher of mine several years ago taught us this but I'd sort of forgotten.
actually, I lied. you gave much more info here than my teacher did in a 6-week course.
You are a real mentor for painters. No bs
This video was more educational in the little time he spoke then classes I've taken my whole life. THANK YOU. Why am I just finding you🤦♀️🤦♀️

I was thinking the same but I guess paint is added when shades are needed.
Maybe add a thick medium to make more of the colour?
Honestly 😅
I have this issue too, so I never mix less than a gallon of a particular color.
Your explanation of the color wheel and mixing colors is the best I've seen. Love the hat too!

u broke it down visually rlly good tho n i think thats why this is so good. we can really see color theory and how it works.
Truly helpful in a prism of enlightened ways. Thank you!
