This completely enlightened me. Since discovering you and watching this video, I've never felt more comfortable and happy with my drawings. For about 5 years, I would only ever draw manga because I adored anime, so I'd just draw what I loved to watch. But for the past year I just stopped drawing and completely fell out of loving with drawing. It makes no sense, but it felt like I was totally tied to drawing manga? As if it was all I could do now and I couldn't break that style I seemed to have committed to. I'd also realise how my 'cute' or simple drawings would gather so much more attention than any time I'd try draw a serious manga illustration... But after seeing how confident you are in drawing the style that you say makes you feel comfortable, I now feel like I too can just draw what feels right. I'm no good at drawing anatomy or realistic things, but I felt that if I decided to draw a simpler style, I wouldn't be considered to be any good at drawing? But now it's just 'fuck it'. I feel so happy, comfortable and actually good at illustrating when I draw what feels right to me; even if it isn't super realistic or an intricate painting. Thank you.
Watching this nine years later, your style has evolved so much since then! I personally feel like the pressure to be unique and have a distinct style is so much worse now, but when you really look at media and how its produced, from music to television and animation it all starts to look and sound the same. And that’s not by accident, producers and publishers look for people who fit the mold of what is already proven to work and be popular- it is a numbers game after all. I hope that people will learn that they don’t have to try so hard to be unique or different and they can just draw what they like. Style comes naturally, even when you don’t actively try, by virtue of being yourself and making your own decisions as to how to draw or make something, your work becomes your own. Fran is Fran and no one else, and no one else can make her work. As artists we already put too much pressure on ourselves to be something else. I’m glad whenever I see people learning that the secret to being unique was accepting themselves the whole time.
Omg, Finaly I have found my niche on youtube! I love your drawing style. Amelie Flechais is my favourite ever. She worked on the movie 'Song of the sea'. Which is a feast for the eyes.
Fran, you are seriously so talented!! I love your work and you inspire me even more to become an illustrator or an artist! Thank so mush for these nice videos and please continue them, because they are amazing :) xoxo - Emma
I can't even explain how your finding-you-own-style-serie helped me! Like really, I watched thousands of videos talking about this subjetct, but you are the first one that showed me an effective help, an effective solution. Plus I felt like I could relate to you, because you showed me your struggle, the same one that I'm having now. This mean a lot. Thank you!
this has put me at ease. i'm studying illustration and it's a great pressure when you don't necessarily have a style but the rest of your course do. hearing your journey and how you have developed has made me feel more comfortable with how my work is going and that i shouldn't be afraid of change. thank you so much!
Exactly what I needed to hear. Thanks a lot for making this video. It really helps. Specially when you speak about not being able to draw bones and incorporating it into your style instead of comparing yourself to others.
Your style is super adorable. I'm really really happy for you hearing that you've been able to reach that point where you're comfortable with your art and don't compare yourself to others -- that's a HUGE obstacle that all artists have to work towards and knowing that you've gotten there is awesome.
Your video reassure me so much, because it's so hard for me to accept I haven't found my illustration style yet. So THANK YOU ! I see me in your description of you when you was frustrated ! Don't stop to be so amazing, please. And, have a nice day !
This video meant a lot to me. I literally started to cry watching this. I'm also on the journey to find myself, just like you were. I go through the same struggles and obstacles. I can't see the light at the and of the tunnel yet, but with this video you gave me a big energy bomb to keep trying harder and harder. Thanks 💕 Fyriee
I'm so glad I searched your videos to find these answers. I have just started watching your RUclips Channel in the last year and have often wondered who your influences are. I'm trying to find my own voice and style in my art after not practicing it for a very long time (a couple decades!) and am currently struggling to know how to find that voice. It really helps to know how you went about it. Thanks so much for posting this video!! Keep being your awesome, talented, adorable and cleverly inspiring self!! Cheers!
This was a great video. As a wannabe photography and graphic designer, I think every artist or anyone that does anything creative should watch this because creative jealousy is something that's hard to deal with. Just being able to look at other artists and appreciate their work without putting down on yourself or saying that your art will never look like that is a great accomplishment. Love all your work, Fran!
Fran I really enjoyed this 3rd part vídeo. As I said in a previous comment I restarted to draw after know you throught Essie. I confess there is a before and a after Fran! Currently I feel more confident to leave my confort zone, and I am not so "shy" how I used to be. Fran you represent so much for me, Thank you!
I miss this kind of videos from you Fran. I love it, it s soo valuable to see your backstory and process to gdt here. Thank you 😘 i wish you make a haul serie about beginners tips on starting and produtivity
Hi Fran!! Thank you so much for this video! I am Graphic Design student and I want to be an illustrator too. And my course doesn't have classes for it. So I need learn my myself. It is amazing to watch you telling your process, and what you said about drawing without bones give me a start! I really don't need to draw bones, and this makes my draw easier and I never think about that! Thank you for be a great inspirantion! You are amazing!
I am just in the beginning of this path and this video was so usefull for me. I feel like all the artists don’t want to tell their secret or something and just say go and paint you will find your style but you really did give us good advices I’m thankful❤️❤️
OMG thank you so much for posting this video! I'm a junior graphic designer / illustrator in an advertising agency located in Prague and I'm really scared that I'm never gonna develope my own style, but watching this I realised that every begginer is getting trough this phase :) Thank you again and have a nice day!
Gracias!!!
WOw...i just came across your channel bcuz i am at that phase of life, like u had, that started to research about different artists. I always loved to draw since i was young, but since i never had the incentives to take this as a career I ended up doind Administration, this year i had taken a course to learn Photoshop, Illustrator and so on. I got frustrated with my work as administration and marketing, so i changed to do designer work at an agency. Little by little i feel myself getting pull back to drawing and now I am finally taking a drawing class to learn the technics. I am so happy to hear about your background and to know that u have been through that too. I think i really want to be an illustrator and you inspired me! Thank you Fran!
It's so inspriational, how ambitious you were and are and how hard u must have worked for to "get" your own style; very impressive and so important no matter which profession or passion it is about.
I stumbled upon this video and I love it! you inspire me so much. I'm currently woring on learning and making my art better and this video makes me happy. Knowing that someone as amazing as you had the same path I have right now (i studied graphic design and now I'm learning more about illustration) makes me feel safe. i send you a huge hug
cool video and awesome illustration style. As I'm starting my own channel I enjoy seeing other artists videos and point of views. Keep up the great work!
You can kick start an evolutionary phase but you can't force the 'comfortableness' that you talk about. It just takes time, and studying. it's a beautiful, fantastic journey that artists go through : )
Hi from Vietnam, just wanna say you are my idol from now on. I started becoming an illustrator few months ago. I really like drawing long time ago but I afraid of alot of things. But after I watched your video "HOW TO BECOME AN ILLUSTRATOR", I am really inspired by you then I start chasing my dream. Really thankfull to you and love you too. Hope you always health and happy. Love from Vietnam
It makes so much sense that I immediately loved your work when I discovered it because you just mentioned some of my all-time fave female illustrators! You have become one of my faves too, just like Gemma Correll, Marguerite Sauvage, and Vera Brosgol! :D
Mil gracias :)
Thank you for sharing your illustration style videos! Everything you've said I can relate to so much. I just finished my 2nd year of graphic design but I've been enjoying the illustration side of it much more. I'm still at that stage where I'm not completely satisfied with my style yet and you're right, it is very frustrating! I just wanted to let you know that you've really been motivating me to work harder and I wanted to thank you for that! Your illustrations are freaking amazing and you're so funny in your videos that I've become such a big fan of yours. Keep up the awesome work!
You're adorable! A lot of the artists you mentioned are great and I adore them too! I'm also trying to figure out my illustration style, so I'm piecing it together at the moment...Thank you for this lovely video!
I am completely enjoying your videos!! I love your style, your sense of humour (yay for funny faces!!), and this video is so absolutely wonderful as well as the part 1 and 2 that you did about illustration style. Thank you so much!! Look forward to when your next planner is out. Looks super! xxx
Dios, que identificada me he sentido.
Thank you for this video. I am so glad I discovered your channel. I have been trying to figure out how to settle on an illustration style, and this series has been the best advice I have gotten so far.
Oh my god, you totally described how i feel in this moment, its so awesome knowing people like me, or you (in a moment) are not alone, you totally inspired me!, thanks :)
I can't explain how much you're amazing and how much you're helping me! In fact more than this. You're bringing me a lot of changes to my daily job. Thank you for spending your time helping us and making us laugh so much. I'm Steycie, from Brazil. I love uuuuuuu
Your channel is a huge inspiration for me! I haven't drawn anything for at least a year because I am disapointed of my work.... I was ispired by so many artists but i never drew so good as them even when i copied some of their work... but after watching this I think I'll try it once more and do maybe something of my own little by little. Thank you!!!
Hi Fran! I am so glad to be able to find your channel! You are such an inspiration to me. I love your illustration style and will look forward watching your other videos! :3
Such an inspiration. I studied multimedia design in school, now a graphic designer. I have been thinking and talking about developing my own illustration style, but never really did it. It has been years. Maybe I should start do something.
i lov yuuuuuuuu i always quit drawing and then go back to it and i feel like i have waste a lot off time getting frustrated but when i watch ur videos always make me think that i have to keep trying and i love u r always giving so much support to ppl like me. eso y i love ur work
thank you for this video I am trying to find my own illustration style. it's so nice to hear that you went on a similar journey and found success with it! It gives me hope
i think the same as you about the anime style, when i was a little girl i draw too much anime, and in this time i'm in the adventure of searching my own style, thanks fran :3
Hi fran! I'm from Argentina, and I feel like you, I'd drawn in childhood but I lost the practice since many years ago, I study Graphic Design too, but with the difficult life I'd let get lost my passion, this video is so very helpfull to me, and I'd never thinked about this that you said, I don't need copy the same draw of my idols, and the anatomy is SO HARD, YES! I'm very gratefull to you for making this video and the tips are most value!
Dear Fran, thank you so much for taking the time to make these videos. They are immensely helpful and inspiring! I am always so happy I see one of them in my subscription box :) Would you consider doing a blog post with all the illustrators that have inspired you? I did try to look up all the ones that you mentioned in this video but it would be great if you could list them all in a blog post. Thanks again for the lovely videos and the inspiration! Greetings from Greece xxx
Me he vuelto a motivar!! Muchas graciaaaaaas!!!!
Omg, I'm so excited you referenced Yelena Bryksenkova. She is one of my favorite illustrators and one of the first that led me to discover others that I love including you!
Fraaaan, mujer.. ¡Te has ganando mi respeto!
I play this video over and over just because of your singing at the beginning! Lol This is a great story. I started with anime style as well, I was totally in love with Magic Knight Rayearth! I spent years thinking I was a fraud, (I have a very childish style and I always had issues with that lol) but I discovered I wasn't an impostor when I had illustration classes in college (I'm a Graphic Designer). I felt so relieved that I could draw different stuff that I just thought "Ok. This is it. Now I can really embrace my style". :p I love hearing other people's stories! ^^
I'm still struggling with finding my own illustration style. I do a little bit of everything but I feel like I need to find some style that is unique and that I feel comfortable with. I love your work, It's so inspiring. The watercolor technique you're using is really pretty. Saludos!
first of all, Thank you so much for this inspiring video! Art is truly about finding what you're comfortable with and expressing one's own style. secondly, you're so adorable
I love this video, your journey feels so similar to mine. I recently decided not to continue with graphic design at college so I completely know what you mean about it not focusing on illustration enough and realizing that you don't have to draw like illustrators you love to like your own work.
I agree! I enjoy and find it relaxing and more "me" to draw according to the adventure time style of skinny legs as smooth lines. I enjoy my cartoon drawing style, it is fun to sit and draw without thinking but there are artists such as 'Audra Auclair' and 'Aïcha Wijland' on RUclips who have a very detailed and beautiful style. I like their style more than my natural style but attempting to draw in that style Sends me to an art block and it makes art stressful. I need to stick to my comforting style but it is hard to accept that I am not a realistic artist and my style involves more dynamic poses and smoother lines. But hopefully I will get over that and begin to enjoy my gifted style.
This video is so inspiring because I am looking to pursue my long lost passion for fashion illustration/design and everything that your saying...el enserrarnos en nuestro 'zone' y estudiar profundamente lo que amamos tanto...that is exactly allllll I want to do. I have been looking up great fashion designers of the 1920's, Balenciaga and Schiarparelli...these artist/designers are the ones I look to to drive me into clothes design. Nena, te siento...I feel you!
Loooove how you tell the story and the info you give out, I too felt alone and still feel kinda lost sometimes but it trully helps finding people like you who are willing to tell their sotories out loud. :D
Simplemente: WOW! Me encantó tu historia, Fran Meneses!

Aliya Huet Same for me I feel tied to anime right now and I feel sick of drawing it I feel like maybe doodling something different will help 😁

Thank you sooo much for sharing your tups, knowledge and experience! You're so inspiring
Thank you SSOOO much Jameel ;__;
Keep working! >:D
You're adorable! A lot of the artists you mentioned are great and I adore them too!
I'm also trying to figure out my illustration style, so I'm piecing it together at the moment...Thank you for this lovely video!
I'm in love with your personality, aesthetic, and story.
¡Gracias,Fran!

Oh my gosh. Haven't heard someone talk about all these cartoons that I LOVED in soo long.
Robotech yea! And Sakura! Me too me too! Great talk, Fran. Very inspiring. Love the end face. HAHAHAAHAHHHA
i think the same as you about the anime style, when i was a little girl i draw too much anime, and in this time i'm in the adventure of searching my own style, thanks fran :3
I love your style so much xD it's so cute when you draw a cat~ please keep drawing and make a sketchbook tour pls ^_^
Oh my God Fran you listed all my favourite shows from when I was a kid
Loved this video - inspirational to see your story!
I am always so happy I see one of them in my subscription box :)
Would you consider doing a blog post with all the illustrators that have inspired you? I did try to look up all the ones that you mentioned in this video but it would be great if you could list them all in a blog post. Thanks again for the lovely videos and the inspiration! Greetings from Greece xxx
You're adorable ^ ^ I can really see your illustration coming to live because it's soon you~
Keep up the good work!
I love this! Thank you so much for this video! You have an amazing and inspiring style!
You are amazing, and so is your voice and accent!
Me he vuelto a motivar!! Muchas graciaaaaaas!!!!
Omg, I'm so excited you referenced Yelena Bryksenkova. She is one of my favorite illustrators and one of the first that led me to discover others that I love including you!
LOVE this post..... loving your inspirations!
Fraaaan, mujer.. ¡Te has ganando mi respeto!
Felicidades! never stop!
y gracias fue inspirador.
I play this video over and over just because of your singing at the beginning! Lol
This is a great story. ^^
this is so helpful and inspiring. Thank you for sharing
Wow!! RUclips recommended me this video from 6 years ago! Fran you were pretty damn good at acting and singing!
Fran you are an amazing artist! Plus I absolutely love how you speak. It's really lovely. Keep up all the amazing work!!!! :]
I love your style, look, and you have an INSANE amount of talent. Plus! You remind me so much of my old childhood friend :)
Love your style! You inspire me so much! Thank You )))
I'm still struggling with finding my own illustration style.
Love this. So inspirational.
Loooove how you tell the story and the info you give out, I too felt alone and still feel kinda lost sometimes but it trully helps finding people like you who are willing to tell their sotories out loud. :D
Simplemente: WOW! Me encantó tu historia, Fran Meneses!
