I grew up near Polly and I’m about her age. Her kidnapping really got to me, it was the first time I really understood the monsters that live in our society. I remember when she was found and they evidently arrested Davis. Seeing him for the first time made it all the worse. He truly looked like evil personified to my elementary school self. RIP Polly, you deserved so much better than this ❤️ 🕊

Having my own 11 year old daughter at the time of Polly's murder, this crime had a more personal effect on me than any other crime before or since. To this day, whenever I drive past Cloverdale I always think of Polly. I used to stop by the memorial site where her body was found near the old Cloverdale teepee burner on the west side of Hwy 101, but now both the teepee burner and her memorial site have been removed. I asked someone in Cloverdale why the memorial site, with flowers and remembrances of Polly left there by many, many people, had been removed and the woman I asked said people in town didn't want Cloverdale to be remembered as the site where Polly Klaas was found dead. I think we as a society need to remember such horrors if only to act to make them far less common in our world. The Three Strikes Law was just such a move. No one who has committed as many, or even half as many crimes as Polly's killer had committed should ever be released from prison. At one time prior to Polly's murder I would have said I was against capital punishment for any number of reasons, reasons that are all still quite valid. But I remember at the time thinking that I could easily pull the switch to kill her murderer, and even today I just can't bring myself to forgive people for committing such crimes. I feel I owe that to Polly. I'll never forget her and I hope her young soul rests in peace.

I remember this case vividly. Listen, I have an antisocial sibling who is a 10-time felon in California. California’s 3 strikes law is a joke. They keep releasing my sibling over and over for 35 years and this guy is like a horse loose in a hospital. I have a criminology degree and have always worked on restorative Justice and Justice reform. These days, I believe antisocial people with repeat person crimes have no interest in learning how to behave among us and just keep compromising public safety. The best course of action is keeping a car with bad brakes that cannot be fixed - in the damn garage.

I was living in San Francisco at the time of this tragic crime. The public consensus was why was he on the streets and not in prison?
The Three Strikes Law morphed into where anyone with a prior conviction would get a third strike no matter how minor the crime. In Los Angeles a man with two priors stolen a loaf of bread and some canned goods for his hungry family and was sentenced to life in prison. His prior crimes were nonviolent offenses. There was a huge outcry.

I continue to be amazed at the fact that everyone is shocked and horrified by these types of crimes, but then it's only very few people who agree that cruelty to animals should result in instant and permanent removal from society. If cruelty to animals would result in the appropriate consequences, many of the most horrible violent crimes would never occur, as this is how so many violent offenders start out. It seems that this is the price of speciesism. Sadly it almost always has to be paid by someone who never got to have any say in this at all.

He has been on death row since 1996. This isn't justice for the victim. I remember this case. Maybe it wasn't a big story in other parts of the country, but in Northern California, the murderer made regular appearances on the local news. It was troubling: a monster who had a long history of violence ending with the killing of a child was defiant and unrepentant. This was a criminal cretin, an animal, to the core, and yet he walked the earth with his middle finger extended. I can only hope that he is having the most difficult incarceration experienced by any inmate.

I think he got in a little hot water with characterizing subjects of his studies as "open to new experiences" "extroverted", "conscientious", etc, thus that is something Dr. Todd no longer does. A similar behavioral specialist on CNN said why he couldn't ethically diagnose President Donald Trump...but he DID say, "I feel the President struggles with facts and that his supporters may not find facts to be terribly compelling."
It's why Dr. Phil, as cheesy as he can be, never diagnosis famous people unless he can sit down with them face-to-face, which he did with wannabe cop Jeremy DeWitte and actress Shelly Duvall. Duvall, sadly, went twice as insane in real life as Jack Nicholson did in The Shining where she played his wife.
It's malpractice to diagnose a famous person based on speculation, but speculation itself is generally in-bounds.

As far as we know today, that means for some people that they will have to remain in custody until they're dead, or so old and weak that they really aren't dangerous anymore. Or maybe until we find a better solution to solve this problem, but we don't have that yet. At least not ethically viable ones.

If you recall, a rock'n'roll DJ out there put a hit on Davis. Inmates can buy headphones-only radios from the prison store, so he knew they'd be listening. He offered to put a lot of money on an inmate's account for finishing Davis off...but I think the cops contacted the DJ and his station and said even with what Davis did, they can't have radio DJ's soliciting vigilante justice; it's not covered by the First Amendment.

I was on a jury where, we later found out, the prosecution was aiming for three strikes. The defendant had nine convictions for things like mugging. He had a low IQ with very bad vision, and would constantly lose his glasses. It was clear that he had indeed come up behind the victim and had stolen an address book and chap-stick from his pocket. I just couldn't participate in the sentencing, so I was excused.

As a native of the Golden state, I could spend the next three hours writing about our broken justice system, but I think the history of Richard Allen Davis says it all. A couple years ago I watched a documentary about prison overcrowding in California. Some inmates serving life sentences said conditions inside were so awful, they envied those on death row. One inmate being interviewed was three years into a ten year sentence for, of all things, odometer tampering. The world is a much safer place with him in prison.
