My guess is that he approached Morgan and made a pass at him. Daniel was rejected in a disrespectful manner and did not take it well. He spent the next few hours fuming about being rejected. Plus he was fascinated with knife violence to begin with and could not resist the opportunity to get revenge on a man who “wronged” it must be exhausting being a malignant psychopathic narcissist .

I work in the mental health field in Australia. While clinicians can have grave concerns about a client's violent thoughts, it can be difficult to take any action on this. Cops can only take them to the hospital, as having thoughts is not a criminal offense, and it is unlikely that a psychiatrist will "schedule" someone based on intrusive thoughts alone. Unfortunately, it can be the case that no action is taken until it's too late.

    • @aarondavis8943

There may not have been anything they could in fact do about it. He had expressed fantasies about killing but as far as I can tell, he hadn't made a statement _explicitly planning to actually kill._ In all likelihood, Daniel was saying exactly what he could say without being reported, and toying with his therapists. Psychologists can't report people for fantasizing about something and nor should they, or people will simply stop telling them anything for fear of being reported, and that would be worse for society. Many bad consequences are averted because people (non-psychopaths) can speak frankly to therapists and receive treatment. Therapists walk a pretty fine line in this regard and I don't envy their position.
We don't know what action was taken by his therapist. That's why I'm surprised at Dr Grande for implying no action was taken when he can't really know that to be the case. And really, why can you do? Tell the police this person _might_ kill someone? What then? Dr Grande could have given us his supposed solution, but he didn't because he doesn't know what to do either.
Unfortunately you can't really do anything about psychopaths who make vague hints about killing strangers.

A very interesting case, Dr. Grande. Daniel was simply a disaster waiting to happen, killing someone at random who he never knew before. Despite warning signals to mental health professionals prior to murdering Morgan, there was really nothing that could be done until he committed murder. Could they inform the police? Isn't there some sort of professional/client confidentiality as with psychiatrists and clergy people? As for his parents still thinking that he was really a good boy, well, parents will usually say that when their child is in deep sheet. There really is no way anyone could be prepared for Daniel's murderous behavior.

    • @diezohra

In Germany a doctor or psychologist can only report someone to the police if there is an imminent danger to someone else's (or the patient's) life or safety, or if someone is confessing to a crime. I assume it is the same in Australia!? But even if his therapists would have reported him, would it have changed the outcome? He only had random thoughts about committing a crime some time in the future, you can't arrest someone for that or even force him to undergo therapy.... I guess one could argue that confessing his thoughts to a professional was a "cry for help", but someone needs to be willing to do therapy or even be willing to change, and I'm just not convinced this applies to Daniel.
It's so frustrating that in some cases something terrible has to happend first before the person can be stopped. I agree with you, there probably was no way to prevent this tragedy.

More education is needed on Autism. I am shocked frequently in the mental health field over how many people don't understand Autism or think they know how it presents and what it entails with inaccurate knowledge.
Poor eye contact is a presentation SOME autistic people have, others can be excellent at mirroring appropriate eye contact. To say his presentation didn't match the disorder is absolutely absurd and misinformation. He was described as "intelligent, articulate and cold.... his face remained blank even when he used words typically associated with emotions " and had a special interest in death and knives which could be very typical of an autistic person of high IQ with sociopathic or psychopathic tendencies.
Bipolar is often a misdiagnosis given to those with autism due to the element of emotional dysregulation appearing like mood swings. There is usually an episode of psychosis or mania in a bipolar diagnosis and this can be misconstrued by professionals if an autistic individual is describing hypnogogic or hypnopompic hallucinations and not understanding fully what is meant by the question, "do you ever hear voices". Also autistic people can present with a shut-down response when extremely overwhelmed and this can also be misconstrued as psychosis. It would be interesting to see this mans mental health assessments which determined these diagnostics.
The compulsion to tap on his eye glasses may have been at a specific or particular time in the day or when carrying out a particular activity so may not have been a present compulsion during an interview. It is said he did it inconsistently during the interview but upon who's standards of consistency? He may have been doing it in response to having a thought arise, or when seeing someone else blink or anything at all could have been a mental prompt to fulfil this compulsion so there may be no obvious consistency during an interview. A better assessment would be if he simply does it consistently each day at some point. Its important to note that compulsion may also switch to a different one at any time.
I have to highlight all of this because so many autistic people fall through the cracks of getting early intervention support. They are particularly vulnerable because even with high IQ and extremely good masking they may not have the interoception or alixythymia to understand their own internal physical and emotional feelings to even be able to articulate accurately to others - or where there may be concerns.
I feel this mans characteristics are similar to those of Jeff Dahmer, who was also likely autistic. He was nurtured in the wrong direction with having special interests of a morbid nature. With the psychopathic element it means the special interests and compulsions are dangerously channeled into heinous behaviours.
With this all said, it is so important to note that just like any other nuero-type, there are good and bad people. People don't often want to recognise autism in psychopaths through fear of stigmatising the condition further, but we must understand and recognise when its present if we want to assist in early intervention for those who need the support.

He was adopted. But the adoptive parents appear to be apologists for his behaviour. The case was a big deal in Sydney at the time because it was such a strange & random attack on a very unlikely victim. Kelsell is extremely dangerous because he is devoid of insight or a conscience. Creep!!! 😱

Assuming a mental health provider decided to take action, what is the description of how that action would look like? Does the therapist call the police to let them know that their patient has revealed a desire? Similarly, if a therapist had a patient that revealed that the patient might want to drive over the speed limit or engage a prostitute or cheat on a college exam, would the therapist be run out of the profession for blowing the whistle? I only ask in the event that a therapist actually took this action and it blew up in their face.

By law, they have to report it if it has to do with harming one self or others. Typically the process is that they are held and evaluated by a psychiatric team then released or treated and then released, depending on the evaluation.

Perhaps the paradox Mental Health clinicians were faced with is the fact that many insane people usually verbalize crazy things and they are completely harmless there is no way of really knowing if someone is going to act out on their impulses are not. The only way I've ever been able to gauge that is their level of neuroticism. Yes they may be normally quiet but how neurotic are they? Does it Encompass their entire being? Do they have good impulse control when they are under the throes of this curse? Things to think about I don't know myself but I do pay attention to those things. Hopefully things like this can be avoided in the future

    • @PFMediaServices
      @PFMediaServices 10 месяцев назад

It's tricky though; a few commenters have explained it better than I can.
Basically, as I understand, just sharing thoughts and fantasies isn't "enough" to waive that confidentiality - there has to be clear intent with specifics.
It seems there's no clear rule Abbott what to do when a patient admits to a previous crime because (theoretically) no one's in immediate danger.
Dr Grande has done a few videos addressing this topic, but I can't remember which ones unfortunately.
