    Very good point explaining how her and his family would be more willing to believe him innocent than guilty. Denial can be a great comfort in times of distress, this is a common pattern with parents of children who accuse a close family member, sometimes even the other parent, of abuse and the person they confide in immediately dismisses it.

    I once had one of the flashing lights of a school bus hit my windshield; I had no idea how big those lights were until it hit. I must say I would have had NO time to react. Fortunately, it did not damage my windshield, but if it had it would have been in my lap with glass all over me. I am sure he had no time to grab for it. Way too fast! Enjoyed hearing this one.

      Absolutely!! There is a lot of velocity in a heavy, flying projectile… along with the rate of the passenger vehicle… heck, I was hit once on an interstate , by what must have only been a relatively small rock or big stone, big nick in the windshield ( although no actual break or shatter) and what was the most frightening part was the totally “out of nowhere “ speed and the loud noise! I thought it was a gunshot.. or something more sinister than a stupid stone!! And the whole thing was so disorienting!! Really shook me up… and first , when Dr Grande began… I thought the man accused may have been so rattled and shook up that his story was all over the place… ( but then those pesky facts started piling up …) but no… the guy was a head case for sure!

  • @NataliaMichalova
    @NataliaMichalova 2 года назад +156

    16:30 - I can confirm it is SO disorienting to have someone you knew and loved commit a heinous crime. Your sense of safety. Your faith in your own judgment and ability to assess people's character-- it's all shattered. I struggled with a severe agoraphobia after my close friend of several years, a man in his mid-40s, kidnapped and raped my daughter just after her 18th birthday.
    I'd spent holidays and Christmases with him, after his divorce. Although WE were never romantically involved, he and I had the type of friendship where we discussed our own relationships, including our sexual proclivities-- I genuinely thought I knew the guy.
    And yet, I saw the SWAT team body cam footage of when they found her, disoriented and still bound to his bed. I know the extent of her injuries and what DNA was found during her "Code-R" exam.
    The agoraphobia has decreased over time but it's still very hard to form new friendships or allow myself to get close to anyone after I catastrophically failed to recognize the predator right in front of me, for all those years, until he upended both me and my daughter's lives in 2017.
    I still feel incredible guilt for having been close friends with him. She overlooked warning signs (that he was giving her while I wasn't around) because my close friendship with him gave him 'credibility' to her. Because I trusted him, he must be alright... She thought she was "just being paranoid."
    So yeah. Denial is the FAR easier route-- if you can manage it. Denial preserves your sense of safety and justice in the world after someone you thought you knew and trusted, does something as violent and unexpected as this.

      I think about this episode of FF I watched once pretty frequently when I listen to true crime stories, because I totally agree with you! Then again, there are times when the crime has so much evidence but the police drop the ball so badly that the case isn't solved or goes unsolved for decades while the killer lives a life of freedom (or even worse, kills more people). When I hear of cases like that, I often wonder where the forensic team is! But back to the episode I'll ever forget, I don't remember the specifics (like the season number or the names of the victim or anything cause it's been well over 15 years since I saw it), I remember one of the pieces of evidence that blew my mind was the trash bags in which the victim's remains were found. They had sort of like a "misprint" on them, so when the trash bags are coming off the conveyer belt, something that normally is used to press the warm plastic totally flat and smooth wasn't in place correctly, because of that these trash bags has a weird, barely noticeable defect in them. It was just like a line in the plastic that the average consumer wouldn't notice. And since the brand decided that the defect didn't effect how well the trash bags worked, they were legally allowed to sell them and put them into normal distribution. However, the defect was noticed pretty quickly (as you'd expect) so very few cases of the defective looking bags went out to any stores. And with that information, the forensic team was able to figure out the brand of trash bags, and get a list of any stores and their locations that would have received said trash bags. That led them to only one or two stores in the area where the crime took place, etc. And they were able to narrow down a very small window where "the killer had to have bought his supplies from this store between these several days"... and with that, I believe they used either surveillance from the store and/or employees being able to describe a particular man who seemed strange or was buying items that screamed "body disposal kit" ... anyway, in a nutshell, it helped lead to the man's arrest. I'm tempted to find the episode again but I think there's probably hundreds of forensic file episodes.

    Great commentary, as always!
    I feel quite certain Todd staged the pipe scene but it's so mystifying to understand WHY. Clearly, the theory that his wife was already dead and the pipe was just a cover-up is problematic, as Barbara didn't even die until the NEXT DAY, after being hospitalized.
    The driver of the vehicle that passed the oddly-parked Kendhammer car said he didn't see any person present at the scene (when, according to the driver, the windshield was still intact) and that implies to me that Todd was at that time assaulting his wife off-site.

    Emotional abusers can be very sneaky and cunning. They can go to great lengths to win over their victim's friends and family members. My ex did this . . . . I am fortunate to have friends and family members who do recognize the abuse and support me, but to this day, I have many friends and family members who still refuse to acknowledge my ex's abuse, because he was "such a nice guy." Well, that's the thing, isn't it? They're nice to everyone except the one they supposedly "love" the most, making it hard to believe the victim if she or he ever comes forward. They wear a mask. It's very devious and doubly-traumatizing for the victim, because she not only suffers the abuse, but she also is often met with skepticism and outright disbelief when she speaks up. It's sad but not surprising that Barbara's family supported her killer. I often lived in fear of my life from my ex, and I could see something like this playing out with him, had he actually killed me. I could see some of my family members siding with him, because he went to such great lengths to win them over, while simultaneously doing everything he could to sabotage my own relationship with them. I hope in time her family members will see things differently. Ladies (and men), if things are not as they should be in your marriage or if you live in fear of your spouse, TELL SOMEONE. Talk about it. Find someone who will believe you and supports you. Write it down. LEAVE. Thousands of women are killed every year by their partners, many more are injured physically, emotionally, and mentally. Get out and find support while you still can. Don't cover for your abusive partner. They don't deserve it and you deserve so much better.

    Wonderful shirt DR, G. This case is so interesting and the oddity astounds me. There was a story on the news here in Florida where a family was traveling down a highway, the just going on a trip, sunny ☀️ day, not much wind no bad weather, bam... Family taken down by a tree....I don't know if I could say, he's guilty, yet the case crazy only because sometimes cases that are unusual, supernatural and not your normal always opens up confusing questions. He could have done it, of course but I don't know why I think, maybe not, but we will never know. .. And that makes this horrible all together....

    I remember when this first happened. While watching the news I KNEW that he killed poor Barb. In the end there was only one lady who spoke up for the victim ( not Todd, Barb ) , and she looked at the family members and said she could not believe that none of them were speaking up for Barb. I think this is an example of herd mentality ! Oh, and I think Todd loves playing the martyr. I bet he's the butt of many jokes among his fellow inmates. I love your commentaries , and your wry, sarcastic sense of humor !

    Barbara was probably getting sick of her husband controlling every aspect of her life….he viciously beat her and strangled her and he put her in the car and decided to stage a car accident with the pipe excuse! His whiny , baby voice during the trial was nauseating to hear. It is appalling that Barbara’s family stood by him.

      OMG I'm telling you. Watch the 911 call, interview at the scene, interrogation, and trial. It's on here. It's compelling it gives you all the evidence you need to believe that Toad killed Barb with his own hands. And set up the fake accident.
      It's insane (to me) that anyone besides all of his family and some of hers, believe in his innocence.

    Talk to “personal injury attorneys” they will let you know often pipes, logs, and other metal objects fly off of trucks that they are not tied down to correctly and kill, and severely injure those in vehicles behind them. It is not nearly as unusually as it’s made to be in this video. Here in The South, where big rigs are around 30-35% of the vehicles on the freeway it actually, sadly happens TOO often! 🙏💔🕊 I can not personally speak on this story however, as I am not familiar with this particular case.

    Dr. Grande!!!!
    When I watched the trial it seemed that he attacked her at 3 places.
    Inside the car at the neighbors home where he had to check whatever it was everyday, since she was gone from the home.
    That's also where he probably picked up the pipe.
    Then he beat her inside the car some more as they were driving. Which is very possible and easy to do to someone and cause injury. I have unfortunate experience with this.
    Then he dragged her out of the car, before that witness drove by, Todd had her in a ditch, beating and strangling the life left out of her.

    • @emiliadavis8247
      @emiliadavis8247 2 года назад

      Miriam Metzinger I didn't see a response but thought I would state the reasons I think some people do this, from my experiences in life, with others. It could be for attention, as they are not getting the appropriate amount from loved ones or friends. The person could live alone and be lonely, and they try to make up for it by talking a lot, if they believe they have come upon one or several, who will listen. Some drugs make people talk too much. And some are narcissists, and want attention, and like hearing the sound of their own voice.

The same way as I didn't tie a pair of ladders on a van, than came off on a motorway, fortunately not causing any damage. These things happen all the time, so there is an element of doubt, whether he did do it or not, there is no concrete proof.
