As a lifelong Mormon, I can tell you that the church breeds these kinds of people and this kind of behavior. The parents kept this monster in their lives because, in the church, a sense of belonging and a good reputation and appearing pious are everything. The parents had very normal sexual feelings that they absolutely could and would not express normally and healthily so, once expressed secretly, they felt shame and guilt and had to hide it; and that opened them up to being blackmailed. Yes, B took advantage of that and that was of course wrong; but the parents allowed it all to happen because they were indoctrinated to believe that their sexuality was wrong and shameful and their association in the church was more valuable than their daughter's safety. And Jan was of course susceptible to being manipulated because the church taught her obedience to authority, especially male authority, and that breeding to raise righteous souls to save the world was all part of god's plan and that supernatural entities come down and give messages to righteous people and that truth is determined not by observation and logic but by feelings which, of course, can be manipulated. And the church didn't teach her about healthy sex boundaries and that her body is her own. She was about the same age as some of Joseph Smith's wives, whom he manipulated in very much the same way, saying that they will perish and their family will be destroyed if they didn't marry him. I mean, look at The Happiness Letter for god's sake! B literally took a page right out of Joseph Smith's manipulation playbook! So, yes, the church is very much complicit in all of this.

My jaw was on the floor for this whole documentary. The stupidity of these parents is astounding! Not to mention that the "kidnapping" of their daughter was clearly allowed because of the affair that both of the parents had with Robert. They didn't want the information to get out to the church. These parents should be in jail along with Robert. So disgusting!

That's right. Jan's parents were accomplices. Robert had something on the parents. He used clever manipulation, seduction, deception and fear to manipulate Jan, I'll bet he used the same M.O. with her parents. Robert's wife Gail knew that Bob and Robert had a homosexual experience, and used that to blackmail Jan's parents into saying they gave permission to take Jan to Mexico. They're blackmailers.
I think that Robert is really perceptive and sees people's weaknesses. He is good at weaseling his way into people's trust, finding out their fears and weaknesses, then exploiting those fears and weaknesses to get what he wants.
He saw that Jan's parents were sexually ambiguous, that each were vulnerable to seduction, that the husband had homosexual tendencies that he wanted to keep secret from their religious community.
This is a very common child molester technique, to seduce the parents. The most common molester of a girl is the mother's lover. It wouldn't surprise me if he were giving them drugs, or had proof that they had been involved in some sort of illegal activity. Maybe he threatened them, that if he got in trouble, he was going to say they both knew all along and accepted payment for his sexual contact with their daughter.

My parents had 4 children from 1954 to 1963. They were not ignorant of child molesters or people who acted inappropriately around children. Indeed my parents refused to let my sister go to a sleepover for "just girls" held by her 6th grade teacher, a single woman, who was going to be the only adult present. First off we are NOT a cult. That’s such an uneducated, judgmental statement. Cults are secretive….we are not. We share and are open with our beliefs. The only thing we don’t talk about is temple ordinances but that is because it’s sacred, not secret. Cults want to take your personal identity away and make it one with the group. We do not. People are allowed to be who they are and choose to do whatever they want within exception of things we believe are God’s commandments….but we are not forced to live them. Once you’ve joined them, cults will not easily let you leave or will completely shun you if you do. We let people leave the church if they want, and nobody forces them back. And when they leave we are taught to still love them and treat them with love. Cults also usually seclude themselves in communes or certain areas-we do not. Our members are worldwide and all races are welcome and members continue to live in their own countries and are allowed to live or move wherever they want.
I am LDS but not currently active, and haven’t been for about five years. Nobody came after me, tried to force me to come back, not has anyone shunned me. At most they’ve sent extremely occasional member or missionary to see if I was interested in coming back and when I said I wasn’t, they respected that. The ones that’s are the cult is the Flds who are an unapproved off shoot of the main church. And they definitely largely keep to themselves and often are shunned or kicked out for no reason.

One of the hardest balancing acts we must perform as adults - and especially as parents - is to teach our children to be cautious and prudent when it comes to protecting themselves from potential predators, but without destroying their innocence. In my sibling’s family, Mom teaches her kids about good vs bad touches, that her kids should not be asked to keep secrets from their parents, and that the kids have ultimate authority over their own bodies - they should never be compelled to show physical affection to anyone, including family members.

People who’ll believe self-contradictory nonsense that’s been repeatedly shown to be hateful, useless, and fictitious can be made to believe anything, easily. Because they’re obviously not intelligent enough to do any critical thinking or research into what they’ve been told.
“Oh, you’re a pedophile who’s therapy is to have sex with children? MAKES SENSE USE MINE.” They can’t tell fact from fiction because their entire reality is built around a fiction, so they just accept what they’re told as they’ve been conditioned to by their religious leaders who are also lying to them. And since they look in the faces of priests who are lying to them every week, and refuse to accept they’re being lied to, they can’t even understand what it looks like to be lied to because when you have a big greasy “duper’s delight” smile on your face from telling a big stinker of a lie, they don’t see a liar smiling at their lie, they see a priest smiling as they talk about their personal relationship with god.

This sounds very similar to the whole Michael Jackson thing where parents were just like "Sure we will let our underage children spend extended unsupervised time alone (and sleep in his bed) with this man we barely know who also happens to have a carnival in his backyard."

No one slept in MJs bed. His room also had two floors

Those parents were only interested in money. If MJ was like Robert, the parents still would have said yes. Some parents are awful.

@@rileywiley268 it's people like you that would allow your children to spend the night there alone.
