      I helped a friend with his optiplex 7010 and I JUST installed this on my old 7010. I will say the top power switch had to be installed upside down for it to work. Other then that it’s all good. When it’s right side up you don’t have any control over the power switch. No idea but it works upside down just fine. It’s a game changer to transform the opti into something more useable and aesthetically pleasing.

    I have two Optiplex mid tower 9010’s both with i5’s. I plan on doing a retro build with one with newer hardware. I’ve been watching all of your Optiplex videos including the video about adding air flow. And on that note, I have come up with some fan ideas but have tried it yet. Instead of cutting a hole for a 120 mm fan you can use Dell original cpu cooler fans instead, and if you only use one you can keep the hard drive cage if you so desire. Or remove the hard drive cage and use to fans. The cpu fans are smaller than 80mm, also the rear case fan is a 80mm fan and if you have some extras thes could also be used. Since these are delta fans and they would exceed the two fan headers on the motherboard, you have four sata power plugs in the front of the case.two on top one for the cd drive and an extra at the 5.25 drive bay, and the two on the bottom at the hard drive cages. With the proper adapters you can power one to two delta fans up front with some modding. The cardboard roll Id is the perfect template for cutouts for this style of fan. The speaker and temp sensor doesn’t have to be moved or removed. Since the case isn’t perfectly flat you can make your own stand off’s for the fan to fit the irregularities. I had some rivet nuts laying around and with some small machine screws and nuts this worked perfectly.
    The thing I wonder is will two 80mm fans bring in enough air flow for a Asus b550 motherboard w/3700x or higher w/ prism cooler, GTX 1080-2080 or R5, R9 or a 6700xt, 6800xt. Any thoughts?

    • @TheGameBench
      @TheGameBench  3 года назад

      I'd say no. I built a system at Christmas for my brother and he needed me to keep the hard drive cage. I was putting in an XFX RX 470, so I needed to add a front fan, so I installed a front 80mm. Even with cutting out the material in front of the fan, the 470 got very warm and the GPU fans had to push pretty hard just to keep it under throttle.

    I know you do all the optiplex vids, but I still love some of the old 2nd and 3rd gen lenovo boards. They were great for case swaps. Power is standard. Mounting holes all standard. USB2 headers are not standard but they have like 2 extra pins. You can just ignore when connecting to them and works perfect. The only thing not standard really is the audio header, and you can buy 99 cent adapters from china for that. Those were and still are some of the best boards for cheap builds. Just wish the lenovo 4th gen boards didn't suddenly become so non standard.

    • @TheGameBench
      @TheGameBench  3 года назад

      I'm definitely going to start branching out to other OEM systems, as well as some content that's not directed at OEM builds at all. I tend to avoid Lenovo since they went so far the other way recently. It really irked me that they did GPU whitelisting. Makes figuring out which model to get even more of a PITA than the Opti's were. Not saying I won't grab one in the future though. But I will be doing some videos on an HP system soon.

    my issue is that i can just get a standard-ish Micro ATX board for like $30 shipped - so paying $20 for adapters is only going to make sense if i'm paying like nothing for the PC. don't get me wrong, i agree Harbin needs to make some money and this is a worthwhile product that the market desperately needs.

    • @TheGameBench
      @TheGameBench  3 года назад

    Fun fact: If you happen to own a Bluetooth keyboard. The computer will not recognize any keyboard on boot (because no driver is loaded at the time) which will also throw an error saying no keyboard found. But then it will let you boot into windows without pressing F1 because... well you obviously cannot press F1 to continue. On the login screen, all drivers are loaded correctly, by then the computer will function normally.

      @@sorayasis Yeah, you can see in those pics that they have a Dell front panel hanging out in the case to avoid the F1 errors. Still you can find mini-tower systems for not a lot. Your other option is to splice into the front panel cable, and tie it into the front panel of your new case. Would look much better, and no errors. If Harbin wanted to make something that worked with the SFF systems, and I think they should, they would have to make an adapter that used a cable with the adapter at the end.

    These adapters are great for ease of use, however I'm wondering about the economics of this route. Once you've bought these adapters, plus the 8-24 pin power adapter, would it not be nearly the same price just to buy a second hand standard motherboard?

    • @TheGameBench
      @TheGameBench  2 года назад

      Nearly? Perhaps... but it really depends on the board. The cost on something like a decent Haswell motherboard can be near $100, even for something that isn't a Z series chipset. For around $50, you might find something okay for that price, or it might not be as good as the board you're pulling out of the OptiPlex. However, there is a way to do the case swap without the adapters if you don't care about the front panel audio or the USB2 ports. Brian at Tech Yes City showed a way to bypass all those F1 errors without the adapter.

      @@TheGameBench fair enough. And I get that there is satisfaction in repurposing oem parts. What do you think about the newer Optiplexes with 6/7 gen processors?- They seem to be becoming affordable now.

    Only doubt I have on these adapters is that some of them have the pins outside the main motherboard so need extra space on top and bottom will they fit on a micro atx case?

    • @TheGameBench
      @TheGameBench  3 года назад +1

      I suppose that's possible depending on the case and it's clearances, but there's no universal answer. I just measured the overhang it's 5mm.

    • @Viggen66
      @Viggen66 3 года назад

      @@TheGameBenchthanks, 5 mm is more than enough or else as typical micro atx cases you can do a little hole in the bottom as usually these cases, have a plate to divide between the psu and the motherboard you can arrange it, for me a optiplex is beautiful with a modern small case as mt and dt are originally from factory, not normal atx size

      The power button adapter works for the SFF models, but there is an interference issue with the front panel adapter. If you don't mind loosing the front panel audio and USB2, there are ways to make it work without the F1 error.

      Nope. Nothing that I know of. The problem with the SFF board is that there's interference between the rear I/O and connection point for the front panel.
