  • You will find here massage techniques (self drainage) and exercises for lymphedema after breast cancer surgery.
Swelling of the arm after breast cancer removal (mastectomy) is a huge problem for many women. Physiotherapy can ease the pain and reduce the lymphedema. In this episode I will explain why the edema develops after breast cancer surgery and I will show you exercises and auto massage (self drainage) techniques you can do.
Lymphatic drainage massage should be performed slowly. After breast surgery we need to take into account the axillary lymph nodes dissection. That is why lymphatic massage after mastectomy is performed differently than in the classical way. Learn how to do a manual lymphatic drainage after breast cancer surgery at home.

Hi Kate thanks for the exercises, really helps, but what about with bilateral mastectomy, my cancer is in the left, in the left removed lots of lymp nodes, and 5 lymph nodes in the right breast . Thank you

Hello, thank you for sharing. In cases such as yours, you need to "combine" a bit and check which ways of lymph drainage will be effective in your particular case. From what you say, I would direct the lymph from the back of the arm to the scapula, and from the front of the hand to the sternum and down towards the pelvis. And I would perform the massage on both sides. Ideally, you should find a physiotherapist in your area and let him/her check what works for you and to let him/her teach you how to perform drainage in your particular case.
I wish you a lot of health! Kate
