The bass line, the groove, the keys, the drums, the killer lead guitar break, and the great Paul Carrack vocal. This song is absolute perfection. Timeless.

My mom passed yesterday, end stage COPD. One of the few joys she had was watching this channel. She loved watching you "discover" the music of her youth. She's often remark about the "sweet, funny faces" you'd make.
Or "how he puts his shoulders in that shuffle."
She truly loved what you are doing. Keep up the great work. You'll never know how much it meant to my mama.

I met Paul Carrack in the early 90's, at a club he was playing at in New Orleans. My wife and I met with him after the show at Tipitinas. We all drank margaritas until about 3:30 in the morning. We told him we thought he was underrated. He has one of the best voices I've ever heard. I really don't think he knew how talented he was back then. He was a very nice guy. I still love his voice.

The group 10cc spend literally hundreds of man hours on creating the most epic sounding vocals ever in music history! The technique used to achieve this was invented for this song and thus used for the very first time ever! Here is a very interesting documentary on how this classic song was created in the studio with their secretary doing the "Big boys don't cry" voice over :-) Go watch it. Yes, but the lyrics are very easy to interpret to be about relationship going to rocks. In this case it would have been best to leave the inspiration as a secret. :) There are some songwriters who refuse to tell where the song came from since they are aware that lyrics can mean different things to different people.

Early 1974, i think just a few weeks before this was released. Me & my mate Chris, both under age 16yr olds sneaked into the 'Thomas'a'Beckitt' a well know pub in south london (Where Muhammad Ali would train when in London) . There was an unknown band performing there that night, but i remember a huge coloured sign saying 'ACE' on the wall. Sure enough the highlight of the night was "How Long". It was amazing when the song was released & went to number 1 shortly afterwards. It's a shame that they didn't have any follow up hits. I think that the members of the group all seemed to be involved elsewhere musically. I don't even know if it was all the same musicians in the pub that performed on the hit record? I do know that of course it was still Paul Carrack singing lead vocals both times, as it was his song. He has gone on to have a great solo career & performed with many great stars & is always much in demand. I was lucky enough to see him perform with Eric Clapton on one occasion as well. But for me whenever i hear that amazing, haunting sound of the opening beat of "How Long". It always takes me back to that night in the pub as a 16 year old. Such a Fantastic memory for me 😎

Paul Carrack is one of the most underappreciated musicians out there. He was involved with so much and always gets forgotten. First Ace, then he spent some time playing keyboards for Roxy Music . Went on to The Squeeze for keyboards and some vocals, giving us a hit with Tempted. Then to Mike + The Mechanics (keyboards and sometime vocalist- he split duties with Paul Young) and dropped stuff like Silent Running and The Living Years on us. Had a solo hit with Don't Shed a Tear. He played with Roger Waters from Pink Floyd during his live stage show of The Wall tour. He was also supposed to form a band with Don Felder and Timothy B. Schmidt of The Eagles that got derailed by "hell freezing over" and the Eagles getting back together so he gave them a song he had written called Love Will Keep Us Alive to put on their comeback album which did well. The guy is just good.

The Babys are a band worth checking out. You could start with "Every Time I Think of You" or "Isn't It Time" then go "Head First" into some other great tracks of theirs.

Paul Carrack was the utility singer for a lot of bands. Absolutely awesome: Tempted by The Squeeze, he sings on that too.

It's probably been mentioned, but the singer is Paul Carrack, who went on to have a successful solo career and was in Squeeze and Mike + The Mechanics. One of the coolest things that I've ever seen in concert was the last time that when he was in Eric Clapton's band the last time that I saw EC. Eric introduced him, he stepped back into the shadows and they kicked into this song, and only stepped out to play his solo, then stepped back.
