Actually, the song isn’t about a woman cheating. Paul Carrack wrote it when he found out the bass player, Terry “Tex” Comer, had secretly been playing with another band.
The singer’s name is Paul Carrack. I once read in an interview he stated he’d written “How Long” and it was about his bass player playing in another band while still playing with Ace. He was also a member of the band Mike and the mechanics.
IIRC the other band was Quiver. Who I heard originally as The Sutherland Brothers and Quiver on their album. BTW, the guitarist on at least some of their albums (Quiver) is Tim Renwick, the guy in the Pink Floyd Pulse videos in front of the singers.
Paul Carrack was in the touring band headlined by Eric Clapton in 2014 (This song came out in 1975). Eric introduces him and they breakout into "How Long". Serious respect from Slowhand. Carrack is often dubbed as the "Man with the Golden Voice" as he has contributed to bands such as Ace, Roxy Music, Mike + the Mechanics, Nick Lowe, Carlene Carter, Roger Waters, Squeeze, Paul Young and a lot more. This guy is gold.
One of the most underrated British vocalists, Paul Carrack. As stated below, Paul has contributed to many different projects that have had some charting singles where he did lead vocals. Nice groove on Ace's one hit wonder How Long (idk!).
Ace - How Long Squeeze - Tempted Mike & The Mechanics - The Living Years Mike & The Mechanics - Silent Running Mike & The Mechanics - Over my Shoulder Paul Carrack - When You Walk in the Room Paul Carrack - Eyes of Blue Paul Carrack - Dedicated “How Long” is often the closing song in Paul Carrack’s concerts. Last 10 years he often played in the Netherlands with his band.
And anything from his Suburban Voodoo album. I wore out the album in college and had to replace it. "I Need You" might be a good song to check out because it's classic smooooooth Paul Carrack. So Right, So Wrong is great, too.
As everyone has said, Paul Carrack is one of the finest vocalists in rock music. He can sing it all. He's had so many hits with so many other artists over the year. Just a great musician.
You Should check out these classics as well: "Please Come To Boston" - Dave Loggins "Reminiscing" - Little River Band "Cool Night" - Paul Davis "Steppin' Out" - Joe Jackson
I’m telling you guys, “How Much I Feel” by Ambrosia… I know I’ve said it a lot in these comments, but it’s SUCH a great song, and you guys will love the twist in the lyrics.
This song came out in 1974, The Bee Gees had a Different sound in 1974, The Bee Gees Didn't have the Disco sound until around 1976 or 1977 That's when Disco Skyrocketed.
Paul Carrack is a treasure - he co-sings lead on Tempted by Squeeze, sang co-lead in Mike & the Mechanics (that's him on In the Living Years which I think you reviewed already), had a major solo hit with Don't Shed a Tear, and also was in Roxy Music for a time - super talented vocalist who doesn't get enough credit - so glad you appreciate him!
"How Long" by Ace reached #3 in April of 1975. The Bee Gees began their run of "disco" hits two months later with "Jive Talkin'" which hit #1 in late June which started their comeback after not charting a hit since 1972.
Since that was Ace's only hit, here are three other one-hit wonders from the 70's to consider: "Rock the Boat" by The Hues Corporation "Magic" by Pilot "Love Grows (Where My Rosemary Goes)" by Edison Lighthouse
Oh man, I hate that song Rock the Boat for the simple reason that on the rare occasions we could listen to the radio in boot camp, this song was always playing!
I'm so glad younger generations are learning how much incredible music their "goofy old parents" had in THEIR day! 🎵 "Nana, nana boo boo, we had more than you do"! 🎶 🤣
If you guys haven't checked out "Hello It's Me" by Todd Rundgren, you're doing yourselves a disservice. It's in the same vein as this song. Also, that sound on the guitar was most likely due to the use of an effect pedal, probably some kind of flanger or chorus effect.
Paul is still around doing his thing, but sadly never seems to come or the US. Met him in KC in 82 when he was touring with Nick Lowe. Besides Tempted and the M and the M stuff, he has put out some awesome solo stuff.
My guess is, the guitar is through a Leslie cabinet, normally used with a Hammond organ. The speakers inside the cab rotate and the rate of rotation can be increased or decreased with a switch. Eventually guitarists moved to Chorus pedals as Leslie cabs were bulky and heavy. Jan Akkerman of Focus used them extensively.
I don't know enough about super old school amps, to me you could also achieve the same sound with a flanger effect pedal, maybe some phaser chucked in as well, but as you mention, rotating speakers would create a similar effect.
There lots of pedals these days that emulate a Leslie pretty well. Chorus never really quite did the job. Cheaper and handier than dragging a Leslie around though.
@ Peter. Old school is right Peter. The first time I heard a guitar through a Leslie cab was (ironically) Leslie West, Nantucket Sleighride. 1971. The Boss company were still Roland then.
It was such a surprise to see that you listened to "How Long" and "Smoke from a Distant Fire" on the same day. It's like you read my mind. I've known both songs since they first came out and always paired them together. I suppose it's because they're both about cheating and have a more sophisticated jazz-pop feel.
I have always loved this song, but I couldn’t have told you the band if my life depended on it. From reading the comments I see this is a one hit wonder. Makes sense to me. But, still love it. There are so many groups that could have influenced this sound, possibly Chicago, Bread, Three Dog Night, etc., but also Motown. This type of sound was very popular pre- disco.
This one made me think of another group you might enjoy - Atlanta Rhythm Section. They have a ton of great songs: So Into You, Spooky, Imaginary Lover, Champagne Jam.
Many others have said who the singer is, now you need to review Tempted by Squeeze, where Carrack sings lead. The song was a staple of our fraternity parties in the mid 1980's.
They need to listen to "Me and Mrs. Jones". I suggested it recently and hope they'll see any other requests for it, too. I like hearing Daryl Hall sing it, too. Daryl's "Philly Mood" is a favorite.
Great Choice guys and so you know this song is not about a girl but its about a band mate That went to try out with another band and they found out about it and wrote this song.
Another brilliant choice from my youth. One of my all time favourite tracks. This the first song on so many of my playlists. Hearing this is always like meeting up with an old friend who you hold very dear in your heart. The lead singer is Paul Carrack who is massively loved and respected especially here in the UK. Be the other way round about the Bee Gees influencing them, they would have influenced the Bee Gees. It's not about a cheating woman but about their bass player playing in secret with another band.
Been listening to this song since it was released. Still listen on my phone all the time. Great then Great now. Glad to see you guys enjoyed this one. 70s 80s yes.
Yes, Carrack was also the lead singer of the band "Mike and the mechanics" founded by Mike Rutherford the bassist of Genesis. Their (The Mechanics) biggest hits were "In The Living Years" and "Silent Running'. It's another amazing band! Trust!
If you guys like this lead singer's voice, you should check out the song "Tempted" by the band Squeeze. He sings lead and it is a real ear worm of a song---in a good way!
I would frequently have this song in my head--I heard it on the radio when I was a kid--and could never remember the band. I was surprised to discover that Paul Carrack was the singer, who (as previously mentioned) did an album with the band Squeeze, particularly the hit song "Tempted", and he also shared vocals with Glenn Tilbrook on "Black Coffee in Bed". When I think back through the decades where I grew up, it’s amazing the amount of absolutely tremendous music we had… I mean we loved her music but after living all these years and seeing what’s going forward it is the best of the best
Paul Carrack is the lead singer and the 'real deal'... great voice, musician, songwriter (for many people in the business) and has worked with great names in music. He has a big catalogue of beautiful songs: "Don't Shed A Tear", "I Need You", "Satisfy My Soul", "Dedicated" and many more... But please take a listen to "Let Me Love Again", a personal favourite, such a beautiful song!
When ACE made this record the Bee Gees had a different sound with Robin , not Barry as lead singer at that time. Should here some early Bee Gees , Message to You, and Massachusetts. Robin had a great voice
Yeah Jordan no dance beat nothing like Staying Alive, sooooo much better. Be careful not to pigeonhole a band. You haven't heard alot of rock music in total. They need to get rid of their click tracks and auto-tune and their computerized way of recording and get back to more of a natural raw way of recording. Bruno Mars and Lady Gaga to name a very few do that now they refuse to use all that auto-tuning and click tracks and tricks of the computerized recording studio.
I am a singer and I am studying Carrack, his approach, his songs. A Brit with a soulful voice, self taught, and I am in awe. He closes his eyes and he has an inner tension in his phrases like a jazz trumpet, very complicated vocal riffs, a lot of variation in his tone and texture (this is why he is so interesting to listen to), especially in, IN THE LIVING YEARS, I bow at his altar.
This song was written because their bass guitarist was stepping out with another band, and was thinking about leaving this one for the other band. Word got around and this song was written about his actions. The bassist didn't know the song was about him at this time they're making the video or singing the song.
The Bee Gees were not a disco band for the 100th time! They were R&B & Blue Eyed Soul, Folk, Country, Gospel, and Rock! They had tune's in a movie about disco.
It seriously should be against the law that Paul Carrack has not gotten more attention from people. His voice is absolutely amazing
BBC on Carrack-“The man with the golden voice”. I totally concur.
Paul Carrack is the Lead Singer, he is been around in a few groups. Great voice!! He is lead singer on Tempted by Squeeze and The Living Years by Mike and the Mechanics.
Love mike and the mechanics
“Living Years”.... 💯😢
I had no idea this was the same singer as Mike & the Mechanics. Cool!
The Living Years by Mike and The Mechanics and Temped by Squeeze. Check them out. You won’t regret it.
Also, Silent Running Mike & the Mechanics

1974 was a great year for music and this proves it this feels good.
Paul Carrack is a legend. Every band he sings in is phenomenal.
70's easy listening music. I heard this so much on the radio as a kid.
I know right?
Me too.
Could not remember it until it started playing and I immediately started singing along !😎
My parents listened to 70s music in the 90s and I heard this all the time as well lol
Yep
Actually, the song isn’t about a woman cheating. Paul Carrack wrote it when he found out the bass player, Terry “Tex” Comer, had secretly been playing with another band.
I heard it was that the band found out that their manager had been embezzling from them.
Facts!
@genorp You are CORRECT.
genorp, you are correct. I actually just learned that fact myself only a year ago, or so, and was surprised by the actual meaning of the song.

I saw Paul Carrack play in Roger Waters band, 1988 or 89, in Atlanta, GA.
Never knew that. Thx
Some of the best bands clearly valued that voice
Did not know any of this. Great info. Thanks. Also, wow, some talent, Peter Carrack.
One of the most underrated British vocalists, Paul Carrack. As stated below, Paul has contributed to many different projects that have had some charting singles where he did lead vocals. Nice groove on Ace's one hit wonder How Long (idk!).

Mike & The Mechanics - Silent Running
Mike & The Mechanics - Over my Shoulder
Paul Carrack - When You Walk in the Room
Paul Carrack - Eyes of Blue

Seconded, that song is amazing. My mom used to listen to that band on repeat when I was a little kid.
Great choice!
Totally agree! Knowing how much Jordan and Amber appreciate good harmonies, they will absolutely DIG "How Much I Feel."

He closes his eyes and he has an inner tension in his phrases like a jazz trumpet, very complicated vocal riffs, a lot of variation in his tone and texture (this is why he is so interesting to listen to), especially in, IN THE LIVING YEARS, I bow at his altar.
love-Love-LOVE THIS SONG!! It’s always a crank it up and sing along song!
There is a live version of this song (same band) where the bass vamps into a Reggae style. Real cool.
I think you two would really Enjoy Little River Band! "Lonesome Looser", "Cool Change". Enjoy!
Ace/Paul Carrack's "How Long" was 1974. The Bee Gees didn't start their Disco-type sound, until 1975. :)
Ooooo, yeah, smooth chillaxing song, love it...Whoo, memory lane again and takin a nice relaxin ride...Thank you, Peace
Check out this guy -Paul Carrack-singing with the group Squeeze- the song Tempted. Such soul- and the voice!!
This song was written because their bass guitarist was stepping out with another band, and was thinking about leaving this one for the other band. Word got around and this song was written about his actions. The bassist didn't know the song was about him at this time they're making the video or singing the song.
Ambrosia "How Much I Feel" plus other songs by them. Late 70's soft pop rock similar to ACE
The Bee Gees were not a disco band for the 100th time! They were R&B & Blue Eyed Soul, Folk, Country, Gospel, and Rock! They had tune's in a movie about disco.
Great song, this is on my phone 📱
