Yacht rock! Funny how that genre was coined not that long ago for songs/artists with this vibe mostly from the 70s early 80s. A mix of soul, R&B, rock and a laidback vibe.
Ambrosia started as a Rock band and moved into some "Blue-eyed Soul". David Pack had such a soulful voice. Any of their hits could have been covered by any of the R&B groups of the 70's and 80's without changing the song at all. Their songs tell a story with great instrumentals and melodies.
I was fortunate enough to have met David Pack (lead singer here) a few years back and what a solid dude he is!!! And as far as I can tell he still sings these songs in the same key now as he did back then. This particular song is almost the perfect love song....he's telling his girl she's everything, without her not only would he not feel whole, but he would be almost nothing!! What a great sentiment.
