Also, with the issues that can arise with CVT transmission, most people suggest draining and filling the CVT fluid every 30,000 miles. For the small expense, it is good to do it more often than the owner's manual states.
Thank you for the info, I just changed it on my Nissan X-Trail 2017 in Costa Rica with 77000 km. I also got 3.5 quarts out. I used Castrol Transmax CVT fluid.
The refill process is just as I explained. I was trying to make the video as short as possible. I have a new video I am editing for nissan Murano that I will upload soon. It will have the refill process shown. Its very simple. Just use a small funnel and refil thru the charge pipe.
Jay The Mechanic that’s fantastic because so do I. I have both a ‘14 Rogue and ‘18 Murano. Don’t have any special requests, but any DYI’s you do on the ‘18 Murano, you should make a video of. Thanks for this video though it helps with my ‘14 Rogue. Just a few questions. What size are the o rings on the drain pan pipe bolt underneath the vehicle. I believe they are also called crush rings or something like that? And the o ring on the engine access plug for the cvt transmission fluid (the one without the dip stick), you said lubricate it, anything to use in particular for that? Can I use a dab of the new trans fluid to lubricate it? And you said that since all the fluid wasn’t drained in this session (some might still be in the gears I guess), that you should run the vehicle as normal and perform the procedure again I guess a week later. That means come back and drain it all out again and refill the same amount that comes out right? Sorry for ignorance if this is all simple. I’m new to DYI and want to make sure I do things right.
@@spartty Hi, Thanks for your comment/questions. I will make as many videos on the Rogue and the Murano as possible. The Crush washer you can order from the dealer, they are only $1.00cdn. Lubricate the oring on the dipstick handle with cvt fluid is good. You dont need alot, just alittle. Yes, a week later the customer came back and we did the drain and fill again, same procedure. Nissan Recommends the cvt fluid change at 96km. When I do the Murano CVT, I will recommend it earlier, maybe 48km.

thank you for your comment/ question. Yes, the customer came back a week later and we did the re-flush. It was still bad but not as bad. I would strongly reccomend doing the drain and fill alot earlier than reccomended by the dealer. On my murano I will be doing it at the 48k mark. That is half of the km the dealer reccomends.
That's wild I get 5 Quarts out every time I do a drain and fill on my 2011 AWD CVT Juke.. I have an Oil drain Pan That's Marked at 5 quarts and 6 Quarts and I know I'm not always on level ground but it's about 5 quarts for me, every time.. And there is an overflow plug that needs to be removed after it is ran to get it hot and then the trans needs to be filled until it starts to flow out the overflow , when it stops flowing out the overflow the level is perfect
My 2015 X-trail run 200k and still i didn't change it, when I checked Nissan service center, they said CVT transmission oil no need to change, now I'm confused.
Thanks for sharing this info. One quick question. Was the customer just wanting this done or were they experiencing issues or hearing noises to prompt the fluid change?
Thank you for your question. The reason this was done was because the vehicle was overdue for the service. They had never changed the transmission fluid. There was no driveability issues before or after the service. The vehicle is still on the road and driven daily.
Thanks for your comment/question. I have a video on an Acura RDX transmission drain and fill. It is same procedure for most honda/acura vehicle. Only difference is fluid capacity.
hi, in theory, if the new fluid is the same temperature as the old fluid. When I drain 5 quarts out (for example), I can just out 5 quarts back in, and the level should be correct? Thanks.
Hello all, when doing just a partial cvt fluid replacement of Nissan X-tral t32, is it essential to monitor the fluid temperature using diagnostic software or a handheld infrared temperature gun to ensure it reaches the correct operating temperature or we should do just the draining and refilling the CVT fluid while The fluid is warm, but not excessively hot? Can this partial cvt fluid replacement '(no flushing of transmission) dislodge debris or contaminants in the transmission for high mileage cars of 100k miles as I haven't changed the CVT fluid before?
I thanks for the great video. I have a 2014 Nissan Rogue SV AWD, It has 80,500 miles, I just bought it and I am not sure if it has ever had the CVT fluid changed. Would you recommend me doing a fluid drain and fill, and replace both of the filters? Thanks.
Thank you for your question. It is always good to replace all fluids unless, you have receipts that prove when they were done. Always set a baseline for when things need to be done.
Hi, nice video! I have a 2016 Nissan Rogue with 115,000 miles and I have never changed the CVT fluid. With this number of miles, do you think it is safe to do this drain and fill service or is it too late for this? Thank you!
When you just drain it, you only replace about 3.5 Q at least in my rogue sport, I would drop the pan and clean it and change the filters, if your comfortable with it drain the fluid again after another 10,000 miles. My 19 was super dirty at 49,000 miles, I'm going to drop the pan and change fluid again this spring, I changed it in October. But I want to change the filters because it was so dirty
changed my 2014 at 60000 miles, wasnt that bad dirty. these are prone to chain/belt slippage. my neighbors pathfinder cvt out at 100,000 miles. problem would have be belt/ wearing/ stretching. remains to be seen how long belt will last with lube changes!! I would use the overflow plug if you suspect any leakage of fluid.
The job was incomplete , not done properly, because you never removed the pan, changed the filter and cleaned the inside of the pan because it will have lots of metal fragments that tear up the transmission, especially if this lady never had the fluid changed. Sad , you should take pride in being a professional and doing the right way.
I completely understand your point; however, if you call and ask ANY Nissan dealer for the procedure of the CVT transmission fluid for this vehicle.... I assure you that the process that I showed is the EXACT same process that they also do. According to Nissan, the transmission filter does NOT need to be replaced. At the time of the video not one single Nissan dealer or after market supplier had the dipstick available to check fluid level. The dealership I went to told me they measure the content coming out and replace with same amount. This vehicle that I worked on is still on the road and driving well WITHOUT ANY ISSUES related to transmission.
Very well explained. A++ tutorial. I'm definitely gonna watch this video while I do it myself. I have a question though. I have a 2014 Rogue and recently ( just yesterday in fact the transmission was been acting up. Hard shifts, at times very slow acceleration ( especially after driving a few minutes and coming to a complete stop ). I would have to press on the pedal at about 50%-65% to get the car moving. After experiencing this I immediately went home and parked the vehicle as I was worried the transmission would completely fail. It has been a while since I had the fluid changed. With that said, do you think the transmission is on the verge of failing? Or is there still a chance to where if I drain and fill the fluid the transmission will still be operational? I watched a couple videos after a friend recommended I try BAR'S LEAKS CVT transmission fix. He basically told me story where his uncle had the same situation I have and using the product fixed the issue. I definitely need to replace the fluid, thats a no brainer but I was wondering if I'm just wasting my time because the transmission is already bad. I'd like to here your opinion on this. Thank you for time to read this. @Jay The Mechanic.
Thank you for your question. It really depends. Sound like to me that you have a low fluid situation. Depending on the amount of kms on the vehicle I would also recommend that you change the transmission filter also. I'm not a big fan of these aftermarket "fix" fluids.

Hi, thanks for your question. You won't be able to get ALL the oil out... you can get more oil out if you drop the transmission oil pan and replace the filter. I think in doing that you may be able to get another 1 quart out. Hope that helps.
@@marckarbowski1261 NO. its not like getting half an oil change... Transmission oil and engine oil degrade at different levels. Hello Jay. I have 2017 Nissan Rogue never change the TRANSMISSION FLUID. Is there any other way to check the Transmission fluid level instead of fill up whatever you took out? Thank you very much....Does not have any Dipstick as well.
I have a 2015 Korean built Rogue. I used my oil dip stick (cleaned it good) with the car sitting level. The CVT tube has a couple of snug bends to get through but the dip stick goes all the way in to the stop. My level was right at the letter "L". I replaced the fluid with 3.8 liters and it showed the same level.
Hi, thank you for your question. The fluid was refilled thru the charge pipe using a small funnel. I should've filmed that, but I also needed to get the car back to the customer.
I have 2019 X trail QR 25 with auto, check your dealer, this trans takes 7 litres, so you left approx 3 1/2 ltrs of dirty oil and this trans takes 2 new filters which i did not see you say anything about. I believe i watched the whole video even with you say first the dip stick should 41cm the you re read and say 44cm...maybe you need a video producer.
Please read the comments and you will find answers to your questions. This procedure was done as the dealer would do it. They do not change the filter inside the transimssion. I have taken these filters out and they are not cartridge style filters, they are made of mesh metal. The 7 liters you talk of is the total capacity, you will only need that much if the transmission is completely drained which only happens if you are replacing the transmission with a new unit. I do need a video editor, do you know anyone who could help?
Is it necessary to change an interior filter like on a normal Auto Transmission? Does it even have one or is it just a pain to drop the pan and replace it ?
Thank you for your question. It does have a filter. Depending on the km on the vehicle I would drop the pan and replace or clean the filter. The filter mesh is made of metal and can be cleaned. Also clean the magnet inside the oil pan. It is not difficult to drop the oil pan.
At $20-$28/litre thats about $80. And then dump after 100km and refill another $80.. would it be a bad idea to fill it with a cheap $7/litre Cvt fluid from Canadian Tire for the first flush?
How many times would you recommend the drain and fill method to get it clean. Would using an aftermarket fluid for this method be acceptable and then using OEM fluids for final fill?
I would do it atleast 2 times maybe 3 times. You should drive atleast 100km in between changes. Never use aftermarket cvt oil for Nissan, and never mix different oil brands. Hope that helps. If you like, you can drope the transmission oil pan and remove the filter, I'm almost certain the filter element is made of metal and not paper. YOu can clean it and re-instal. I have changed alot of older nissan transmissions and usually that filter is in clean condition unless the chain broke. Nissan does not recommend changing the filter.
In my opinion.,.. no its not too late. is it 150 000km? or miles? I would drop the oil pan and change the filter out or at the very least clean it. The filter element is made of metal and can be cleaned, but replacing it is easier. I would also change the oil atleast twice.
Thanks! I have a 2019 rogue at 50000ish miles. Is there anyway to know ahead of time what size copper ring you need for the drain pan bolt? I just want to get one ahead of time so I'm not running around looking for one when the time comes.
Hey, Thank you for your question. The proper service procedure for this vehicle is the drain and fill method. This vehicle does have a serviceable filter but, nissan does not change the filter when servicing the oil. You can change it if you like. You will have to drop the transmission oil pan in order to do that. This customer came back a week later and we did the service again.

IMO, you should have mentioned that the special service level tool J-51155 (according to Gear Mag;) lists for ~$260. For the average Joe DIY guy, not cost efficient. So, that part a no go for me. I think measuring amount out will get one close under most circumstances. Since no dipstick, using the overflow drain with a scanner for CVT temp range would be ideal. But for many that may be a bit too technical. If I could reasonably rent that SS Tool, that would be great. Thanks for vid.

Also, with the issues that can arise with CVT transmission, most people suggest draining and filling the CVT fluid every 30,000 miles. For the small expense, it is good to do it more often than the owner's manual states.

What about changing the CVT filter ?
And there is an overflow plug that needs to be removed after it is ran to get it hot and then the trans needs to be filled until it starts to flow out the overflow , when it stops flowing out the overflow the level is perfect

Hi Jay,
What’s the part number for the drain plug gasket?
Very informative Jay! Can you do a transmission fluid video on a Honda?
Thanks for your comment/question. I have a video on an Acura RDX transmission drain and fill. It is same procedure for most honda/acura vehicle. Only difference is fluid capacity.
Are cvt like regular trans if they dont change fluid regularly dont do it or risk of damage
In identifix system the specs 35-45 degrees or 95-113 ferenhight. You want to close plug at 104f. Why such discrepancy?
hi, in theory, if the new fluid is the same temperature as the old fluid. When I drain 5 quarts out (for example), I can just out 5 quarts back in, and the level should be correct? Thanks.
Yes, exactly
I would do it every 30k if you plan on keeping your vehicle a long time. Those CVT are prone to failures.
Very impressive and helpful video
I thanks for the great video. I have a 2014 Nissan Rogue SV AWD, It has 80,500 miles, I just bought it and I am not sure if it has ever had the CVT fluid changed.

The dealer says it needs 7.9L for complete replacement. Shouldnt the drain pan got removed too?
there are a few magnets inside the drain pan to capture metals.
changed my 2014 at 60000 miles, wasnt that bad dirty. these are prone to chain/belt slippage. my neighbors pathfinder cvt out at 100,000 miles. problem would have be belt/ wearing/ stretching. remains to be seen how long belt will last with lube changes!! I would use the overflow plug if you suspect any leakage of fluid.
I'm having trouble getting the cap off. Any suggestions
Should the engine be hot when draining?
Not hot. But warm is good.

And how much does that one more time cost sir?
DO NOT MIX CVT FLUID
Nissan does not recommend changing the filter.

there is a filter. you would have to drop the oil pan. you can buy a new filter or clean the one that is already in the car. the filter should have aluminum mesh thats why its possible to clean.
