- In this video I will show you how to do a Nissan CVT transmission fluid drain and fill service. The vehicle I am working on is a 2017 Nissan Pathfinder. The steps to doing this service is very specific and you have to make sure you check the fluid level properly. I will show you all the steps in doing this service so make sure you watch the entire video. For a list of parts and tools used in the video, see the links below.
** Some information on this CVT service:
- this CVT transmission drain & fill should be done every 30-40k miles
- perform this service with the car on a level surface
- transmission fluid level check to be performed when fluid is between 95F - 113F
- you can start the fluid level check when fluid temperature reaches 104F
- if the fluid temperature passes 113F, reinstall the plug, turn off the engine and let it cool down, then repeat the check procedure at the correct temperature
- the transmission fluid drain should get about 3 to 3.5 qts of oil out
- refill new transmission fluid with 4 qts (to start) and then do the level check

excellent video tutorial, thank you very much. I have a 2019 and beyond the money I save is the dubious patience or attention to detail that the people at the dealership offer me beyond not being able to see your vehicle during the service. Again, thank you very much.
Best teacher ever. You even give info i didnt think i needed.
Fun fact, Amzoil makes Nissan OEM Transmission fluid and it will not void the warranty if you use Amzoil synthetic fluid rated NS-3. Blew my mind when I discovered that as well.
Good and thorough video. Thank you for sharing.
This was a high quality service video. Thank you!
Great to see you still have the car! I've done a lot of the same mods you've done. My 2018 is still running strong. Thanks for all the videos!
Happy to hear you still enjoying your Pathfinder. Thanks for watching my videos!
Where can you buy those tools you been using for measuring cvt oil temperateture
Very complete and detailed step by step how to change transmission CVT fluid . Thank you for the VID.
THANK YOU VERY MUCH!!! We absolutely love our 2013 Quest with its smooth and problem-free CVT!!! It's by far the best and most reliable minivan we've ever owned!!! (Our last Sienna died from the infamous and catastrophic Toyota oil sludge defect. 😵🤬) The Quest has better quality than the last-generation cheaply-made, but immensely popular Sienna and it's tons more comfortable and reliable than the Odyssey!!! We're so happy and glad we chose Nissan!!!
I would like to thank you for this video and various other videos on Pathfinder. They have been really very useful.
Spot on! Perfect DIY CVT Trans change for Nissan. Appreciate the extra info. such as temp scanner vs computer trans temp. I've done the same with never more than 3 degress variance. Again, fantastic video.
Thank you for your comment!
you always and i mean always have the most detailed videos on the interwebs.
Nicely done video. Far, far better than all the rest I have seen.
I have 2013 and I’ve been using Valvoline CVT tranx fluid for years. Still driving smooth and saves me a lot of money.
Thank you for your excellent video. I don't have a Nissan ,but I will inherit a 2015 RAV4 with CVT. This video is a good learning tools and good reference on the skill. Thank you again for the video 👍👍👍👍👍
Thank you so much for a detailed drain and fill. I was getting ready to do mine soon and I was thinking of doing it without a scan tool, now I will use one to get it right. I know they're not cheap. I Love my 2017 Pathfinder platinum.
Glad you found my video to be helpful. Thanks for your comment!
Very thorough and informative information on the CVT. We have the same 2017 Pathfinder and I have the autel mp 808. So this information is great, thank you.
Thanks for watching!
Great job man,As a Nissan costumer since 2003 no issues people like to talk trash about Nissan cvt transmission,my 2016 Pathfinder with 100k miles no issues changed the fluid every 30k miles
hi, did you change the filters as well?
I have 193,000 miles on my 2018, I change it every 60,000 miles and I tow often with it. And to the other commenter, there is no filter on this transmission per the dealership.
Fantastic video, I got a low-mileage 2015 I need to change fluids on, this is going to help in a big way.
Excellent job on this video! Well done.
Dude, awesome video, very informative and good execution on the job
Thank you for a very good and clear and precise teaching I truly learned alot
Great informative DIY. I just did CVT fluid change on my 2015 Infiniti QX60 that shares the same engine as the Pathfinder. I used a Milwaukee thermal gun to measure oil temp. Thanks a lot for posting this. Removing the CVT fill cap is enough challenge already till I came across your video. Infiniti is quoting me $520 for this service.
Thanks for your comment and sharing your experience. Glad you found the video helpful.
I paid the nissan service department 289.
Very informative video, great job on the video, very detail. Oriented good job all around. Certainly appreciate the video at the time.
Thank you for this! I was dreading it, and this took fear right out of me!
Same
Men thanks! Helpful video step by step
Nice work. Everything you did was on point.
Thanks a lot 😊
Good Job Man!....Funtastic ...going to buy some Thermal gun and Nissan ATF 4.4L...ASAP..
It’s real professional, thanks for share your video.
Great job thanks for doing this.
I liked most of this video as I’ve done the same with the exception of “lifting the vehicle up and level” with my 16 rogue an now own a 20 maxima.
got a 2013 pathfinder. had factory change transmission fluid 2 years ago, still running good over 140,000 miles. does hesitate going up hills from dead stop but i just take it slow. Thanks for the video!
Did you ever replace the transmission filters?
Great video. Very detailed. Thanks.
Thank you ! Very informative ! 👍
Awesome work! Thank you.
Great job! You're the first I've seen quote the service manual volume for a drain and fill. Thanks for the tips, my 2018 appreciates them all! Keep it up!
Thank you for your comment! 👍
Excellent video!
Thank you so much for the video
Very professional 👍👍👍
Thank you good help for me to fix my car
great video!
Wow a very well done how to do video!! Great 👍 👌
Thank you! Cheers!
Great video , thanks
awesome video! 🎉
Thanks for the video it was very detailed. Do you plan on doing steering flush in this? Do you know at what interval it is done? Please do a video.
For those DIY'rs that don't have an expensive comp and are worried about not enough fluid being added, you can measure what's been dumped. I've done this with CVT's and normal automatics that require VERY specific amounts or damage may be done.
Use a measuring cup and record exactly how many cups have been dumped out of the trans and record it. Clean the cup and refill it with the precise amount of fluid to go back in. I've never had any problems using this method.
That was and awesome diy video...thanks.
Thanks brother so awesome
So when would you drop the pan, clean the magnets, change the pan filter and change the other external CVT filter?
Love your videos. Can you do a video outlining how to change the filers please?
Excelente videos, felicitaciones
Nice clear video, I use Idemitsu N3 since it's less expensive and is one of Nissan's OEM suppliers.
Thanks for sharing the information. It will be helpful for everyone.
Good video. I wish there was a similar video for a European Nissan Micra K14 CVT.
Thank you for sharing.
Well done, thanks.
Great video👍 . You haven't mentioned about the CVT fluid Deterioration data.
Very good thanks
Have myself a2016 Pathfinder still running strong 155,000 miles. Are you planning to do a transaxle oil change anytime soon?
Could you make a video how to change spark plugs on Nissan Pathfinder 2013-2020? Thanks!
I have a 2019 pathfinder which makes growling sound between 1,000 to 1,500 rpm speed 40 to 70 kmph. I gave it to the service centre and they say it's normal, I know it's not. Do you have any idea what this now possibly could be? You think it might be related to the level or quality of the CVT fluid?
I was able to get an OBD2 Bluetooth adapter working with my phones and the CVTz50 app. I am on the demo version right now since I only found that it does work. The paid version is a very reasonable $4.99
If I'm doing the first ever drain and fill on my QX60, what's wrong with draining the CVT fluid, accurately measuring the volume drained and replacing it with the exact same amount?
Nice video, but how about changing at least the little filter? The qx60 has one, how about the pathfinder?
Great video!
However, there is no information about the CVT fluid deterioration data re-set in OBD and the change of the CVT fluid filter.
Thaks a lot, danke vielmals.Greetings from Vienna/Austria Grüsse aus Wien AUT
Did you change the differential oil ?. I have 2017 Nissan pathfinder
09 Nissan Murano. Will this be the same scenario as we'll. Need to get mine done. Any information will be helpful
Thank you
You can use the temperature gun or a temperature probe on the oil coming out of the drain plug and level drain to accurately measure the temperature, just don’t point it to the oil pan itself as it won’t read accurately.
Is the same size crush washer used for both the oil drain plug and the transmission drain plug? Nissan dealer website doesn't specifically state. Do you happen to have part numbers for both?
So how often do u need to change the filter in pathfinder trans
Thank u u are the best
But u didnt talk a bout filters magnate one and paper one?????
If it's not moving on drive or Rev could it be that it's needs transmission fluid change
Does O’Reilly brand CVT fluid work instead of Nissan brand?
I am fixing to change the small oil filter cooler for the first time ever on this vehicle that has 160,000 miles but I’m afraid to drop the pan and change the 4 quarts because of how long it’s been without so I am thinking of just thinking of changing the oil cooler filter to clean some of the debris if any what do you think?
How many quarts of ns3 CVT fluid a 2014 japanese Nissan Note requires?
Question: did you put more than 5 Qts ?
Now I know if I ever take the Rogue to a shop and they messed with the cooler or transmission check the fluid level. I have heard these could be underfilled some but don't overfill. I would rather just get it right.
What gear when you run engine park or neutral
FANTASTIC VIDEO! Lots of great and detailed info! Do you have a video on removing and replacing the tranny fluid filter? I'd like to see that one too. Thank You very much! 👍
This service was performed following the Nissan service manual. I am not sure why Nissan does not have info on replacing the transmission oil filter.
Hi .. Nice one. Just wondering.. Do you also lubricate your suspension as part of your regular home maintenance? That is add grease to ball joints etc via zerk or needle into the rubber boot ?
Nice question, I always ask the same and just everyone ignores my question!
Why can i not use the old school method to fill same amount as drained .e.g 4QT out 4Qt in?
In fact..on my 2019 Maxima...I never do just a fluid change...always filters too.
It has 2 filters ..why not change those also?
you seem to know what you are doing..............thanks you
Thanks
Good my sweet sir
Do I have to flush the system if I’m using a different brand than Nissan? I wanna use Valvoline instead
Hmm I am interested in the lab test result for the old fluid.
Just did this service, when I measured what came out, with the overflow drip, I had about 2.5 quarts. Severely low, but the car was in an accident on the right side, I'm wondering if they had the same cooler line removal yours did.
Came back to thank you again. I've noticed my rpms are running at a lower rate at higher speeds. I no longer hear a growl at slow speeds. I've gone about 10K miles with low fluid. Hopefully I've avoided some damage by doing this service.
Very well detailed video. I'm going to use the thermometer method, and pray nothing is wrong, I was driving my 2017 Pathfinder and I started having and issue of it feeling like it's slipping. When it does that, it's like the vehicle's engine goes into limp mode. Well now it's shuttering. But I'm going to try to change the fuilds. Also, your video only covers the 2 wheel drive model, what about the 4 wheel?
Any update about your 2017 nissan pathfinder. Ive got the same issue but after doing the transmission fluid change i got a code P0715 which is the speed sensor.
Great video! My QX60 is at 45,000 miles and has never had the fluid changed. I assume I can just add the amount of fluid that comes out of the transmission back into the transmission considering there has been no work on the transmission or the transmission cooler.
That will work assuming the oil level is correct to begin with. I know you said no one has touched it since new from the factory, but that's a risky assumption.
Where you get the Nismo pedals and dead pedal
Would you be able to remove the pan and do a filter replacement on your next service? This video was great but it would be awesome to also see how to service the filter and pan gasket as well.
This service I showed is following the Nissan service manual (Nissan does not replace the filter). But for this CVT, the filter actually can be accessed and changed from outside the transmission. Higher up on the outside, there is a cover that you can remove and change the filter.
When your truck shifts out of gears from 3 to 6 and want drive is the transmission gone
Hi! Thanks and great job. And what do you say about resetting the electronic parameter "Oil aging" that is carried out in the service after an oil change? This must be done without fail!!! Otherwise, the box will not work correctly.
Привет! Спасибо и отличная работа. А что вы скажите по поводу сброса электронного параметра "Старение масла" что проводят в сервисе после замены масла? Это надо делать обязательно!!! А то коробка будет работать не корректно.
Liked and subscribed ❤ I have a 2013 JX35 112k and recently had a p0868 code pop up. I did research it and it appears to be low trans fluid pressure. Have you ever done this service and have any suggestions? I am aware it could be several things, but I am going to start off small and change fluid as well as the sensors themselves and pray it's not the actual pump failing. Any advice would be greatly appreciated! Great channel well thought out instructions and follow through!
I have not experienced that trouble code. But doing the transmission fluid change service and filling to proper level can be a start before you take it to a shop. Try replacing the fluid and then use a OBD tool and erase the code. Then drive it for couple of days and see if the code returns.
@dial2fast kinda my plan. So I checked fluid level and (I have the model with the dipstick still) and cold it's level is good, color is good clearish but not dark, hot it's just above the lower notch indicating low fluid level. I don't know what's in there for fluid but I'm guessing Nissan N3 CVT fluid but Im going to just drop pan replace filters etc and do it right. Just need to make it to Saturday lol
Your videos are high quality and extremely informative, feels as if I'm being taught onsite. Very well done. My only question is, do we not need to remove the pan and change any filter? Thank you in advance.
The instruction shown in the video is per Nissan Service Manual. Nissan does not require changing of the filter. There is a filter that can be accessed on the outside higher up on the transmission. You can change it, but again even Nissan dealers don't change it.
@@dial2fast Thank you for you update!
I do my CVT fluid change at every 10-15k miles, changed 2 filters at 46k miles. I do my best to make sure the CVT dont break before I sell the car.
I'm having trouble with my truck I'm scared to add the fluid
What s the noise from the Power Steering Fluid area in most of Nissan cars and SUVs ? . It sounds like hissing and screeching noise.
Je veux savoir aussi.
IS that possible just insert an oil extrator tube from top an suck up the fluid and replace the same volume new fluid in and call it done. Since you can really can empty all old fluids an not need torun the engine to temp...etc
The method you mentioned will not guarantee you have the proper fluid level. CVT fluid volume changes quite a bit with temperature. This is the reason Nissan took away the dipstick because they don't want people to check level with it. The method I showed in this video is per the Nissan service manual. You are the car owner, so you can decide how you want to do this service but just keep in mind replacing a CVT transmission cost $4000-$8000.
