Keith messes up the lyrics, forgets one part, lost his strap mid solo and still creates a masterpiece. Goes to show you don't have to be perfect to be amazing.
and to think - the Super Bowl doesn't like live guitar because of "mistakes" that can be made that mess up the performance... man, these dudes both turned a handful of mistakes into absolute gems. This is what music is all about it. Improv at its finest. So much soul, so much feeling
As a musician myself, I actually am ok with the mistakes in a live music session because that is what makes us all human!! It's a real, organic feel together.. mistakes and all :) you can't emulate that feeling and vibe right there with that crowd, in a studio. Never. gonna. happen.
I think Flea from RHCP said they don’t do live instruments because setting up and taking it down would be way too hard in a short period of time, and not even including sound checks and stuff.
@@zacharymorris6478 no offense but shut up…. & this is coming from somebody that makes a living having been a fan of John since I started playing professionally. It gets old & a bit cringe to see people constantly want to compare players every chance they get as if they’re the gatekeepers of all things related to guitar
2:17 John face reacts to a guitar lick even if it isn't him doing it! Seriously though you can tell john is the type of artist that really 'feels' the music and just reacts in the moment. Not many genuine artist like that around anymore. I'm glad he found a fellow artist in Keith and Jammed with him (and recorded it)
Would NEVER have picked these two to blend so perfectly on THIS song! Not competing or showing off - just making incredible music. Makes me want to hear a lot more of them together.
Kriss Gennrich I want more also. Both are in my favorite guitarists, singers, humans. Number 1 Is and Number 2 is ... I can’t decide. Jimmy would have love Eric Clapton in this.
L John well they have this far since 63 buddy, he was the best beatle the only one who made it alone, McCartney and the wings had 2 hits, George Harrison did OK with the travelling wilberries but John was the man, the best vocal the best writer and a better guitarist than Harrison
I love that at 1:30 John reckons he doens't quite have his vocal range back to sing the next lines and he just looks at Keith and he understands immediately hahaha
Cody Church It's a high pitched part (don't know if that's correct english), and back in 2013 when this was performed, John wasn't recovered yet from his granuloma (vocalchord problems). So that's why, I guess. And Keith's smiling, so he knows hahaha. but that's my guess
casper van helvoirt Haha, I always thought it looked like the next line was actually Keith's part, but John noticed that Keith was nowhere near the mic, so he covered for him as KU rushed to the mic.
***** Hahaha that could be it aswell ;) But since they both have 4 lines to sing each time, I guess John just realised he could hit the high notes yet ^^
What an odd formula ... Blues Guy John Mayer + Australian Country Guy Keith Urban + Old Beatles Song = Monstrously Great Jam! I couldn't put this on my playlist fast enough!
@@BryceRogers_ That was not intended to be a dig at all on Keith :) .. or country music. But more of an affirmation that he plays with so much soul. He literally has so much talent.
I dragged my husband to a John Mayer concert almost 20 years. He changed to a huge fan. I have seen him 14 times since! Hoping to get to a Keith Urban concert someday!
but I laughed hard at that comment and then watching the scene :-D Cause you know that's not true but looks like - that's what makes it funny. You know ... I think that face could easily be a meme :-D
1:31-1:34 Keith helps out with a high pitch note is the most wholesome scene. Point, JM was a year into his throat surgery and was still finding his feat
Another preference...WOW Keith Urban can be fabulous with each artist he lets into his already divine style which I LOVE, have for many generations. Keepem coming Man, you are my Blessing 🤗💗😘
When John is singing the bridge you can tell the high notes are coming and he doesn't have the range, Keith's face lights up in the background and he leaps forward to hit the high notes "...It's a love that lasts forever.." And they both just smile. Keith knew he needed to jump in. Dank moment.
DBEENE123 If John wasn’t having vocal issues during this performance he’d hit some heavenly high notes. His performance in LA of Neon shows his incredible range
@@spongboobman5860 a lot of artists don't. Pre-colab sessions, award show gigs, guest appearances... there are many interviews and documentaries showcasing the musicians ability to jump into songs with little practice. John clearly couldn't hit that note and Keith was late jumping over to the mic to sing it. Evidence points towards "cool moment". Sorry Mr. contrarian Grinch.
ThatEraSound It's not weird lol. Everyone has their own preferences. I like this version more too. But I don't neglect the original either, in fact I have deep respect for that version because if that hadn't been created, this version wouldn't exist either.
They each have their own different styles so its really hard to debate on which one is better. Personally I think JM is but Keith is right up there with him. Agreed though, together they are awesome!
@@superczuper2011 John Clayton Mayer’s discography is one of the FINEST in music. Hands down. He’s collaborated with more artists than I know, across multitudes of genres. And every one of his albums progressively sounds different, even though he’s vastly known as a “Pop” artist. Eric Clapton, Mr. Slowhand himself, even called John a “master” guitarist. But you already knew all that, right? 🥶😂
my favorite part about this double guitar solo is that it's actually a triple guitar solo. Took me about until about the 6th or 7th listening to properly notice it, but the third guitarist is doing some pad-like lines during the quiet part that I think really work well with the star duo. Props to who ever that guy is! Playing supplemental yet non-intrusive stuff is an art on it's own
damn nice catch, I never heard that before. I love the collaborative effort that goes into creating amazing music edit: Plus the drums, base obviously. But the backup singers too filling in the 'gusto'. Props to everyone up there
TWO GREATS!! Keith, your voice is getting better with age. That smooth creamy tone just like a bottle of Baileys Irish Cream. Thank you. 🙏 And you John, love your unique voice. Thank you. A great duo. ❤❤❤❤ from Australia.
Keith is so damn good because he's been on tour his entire life. Calling him a country star does not do him justice. He can hang on guitar with anyone....
Thought that Urban was just a "Country" singer that got lucky- Married a movie star & hosted American Idol. This guy is Great!! The Clapton benefit concert from which this is taken, is shown frequently on VH1. Guitar lovers shoud definitely watch.
"Don't let me down " when John can not sing higher notes and don't let me down when keith had problems with his guitar strap ! That's what team work and not let down each other. Great performance
This was just after John was cleared for his surgery still recovering, fucking crazy what happened to John but he's still really fuckin good even tho he lost a couple of high notes. Sounding back on track nowadays though !!
@@skyplays5103 John had an issue with he's vocal cords and needed to have surgery, he's alright now, bit this was right after the surgery, that's why he was unable to hit the higher notes, and if you listen to his concerts he had to change the way he sings a bit because of it.
Andryo that actually makes perfect sense. I never even realized that on Queen of California from this same Crossroads Festival, he’s singing the parts way lower than on the studio version. IMO, I think that live version is actually better than the studio version. Haha
Let’s keep in mind how tense of a time this was for Mayer. Any big JM fans know that though this performance is mind blowing, but the vocals lacked. John was going through a real tough time here: a year from his throat surgery and rediscovering his voice and some of the missing pieces he lost. The world saw him as an ego-headed womanizer, but that’s not who John is and this moment in time was a major turning point for him as a musician and a man
Why make excuses for John MAYER, this is one of the greatest songs! Two men making love on guitar’s as another comment had said! Seriously, this song is addictive
@@oneofakind9784 John Mayer had granulomas on his vocal cords which meant he was close to losing his voice completely. He couldn't even speak for around half a year, and was using an iPad to communicate instead, in an effort to give his voice an opportunity to heal. If you compare his voice here to say, 2007, you can see he's still really struggling here. It's only by 2015-16 that you can see some portions of his old voice come back, IMO.
John Mayer: ok Keith, just like how we rehearsed it. "don't let me down!" two steps backward, then two steps forward, and.. "don't let me down!" Keith Urban: nailed it.
John with his head down I think is blown away by Urban's guitar skills, I'm a big Mayer fan, Urban just killed this. Just awesome the two of them together.
@@JuicyFruityify Its a valid opinion more so than my opinion on the subject. I would say watch Neon live in LA and say Mayer isn't an amazing guitarist. Especially when considering he was 20yrs old when he wrote it. I feel he's one of those people that almost invented his own way of playing guitar. By no means am I a huge Mayer fan even though it may come across that way but I respect the hell out of his talent. Id say maybe he was blown away that Urban could play as well as he did. Looking back on your comment I think I misinterpreted what you meant and thats my bad. I somehow took it as Mayer was jealous or something lol.

The number of times I’ve come back to this video over the years is crazy. The two best guitarists of the current era, totally different styles, coming together to make the best performance you could ask for.
Absolutely
As a musician myself, I actually am ok with the mistakes in a live music session because that is what makes us all human!! It's a real, organic feel together.. mistakes and all :) you can't emulate that feeling and vibe right there with that crowd, in a studio. Never. gonna. happen.
Oh no cookoo time in this space. Cut & run it's contagious like covid !!!
I think Flea from RHCP said they don’t do live instruments because setting up and taking it down would be way too hard in a short period of time, and not even including sound checks and stuff.
ah - is that why there have hardly been any bands play the super bowl...?
Keith Urban can seriously turn a guitar inside out. What a beautiful sound. These guys are absolute legends.
hes decent. hes no mayer by any stretch.
great canyon between Keith Urban and great guitarists. he even sings english song with hilly Billy southern accent.
Ask John what he thinks of Keith. They played together in a canyon.
@@zacharymorris6478 no offense but shut up…. & this is coming from somebody that makes a living having been a fan of John since I started playing professionally. It gets old & a bit cringe to see people constantly want to compare players every chance they get as if they’re the gatekeepers of all things related to guitar
@@zacharymorris6478 yeah he sounds good on guitar and not like a srv knockoff (mayer)
2:17 John face reacts to a guitar lick even if it isn't him doing it!
Seriously though you can tell john is the type of artist that really 'feels' the music and just reacts in the moment. Not many genuine artist like that around anymore. I'm glad he found a fellow artist in Keith and Jammed with him (and recorded it)
Yes, and Keith does the same when John starts playing his solo to.

Would NEVER have picked these two to blend so perfectly on THIS song! Not competing or showing off - just making incredible music. Makes me want to hear a lot more of them together.
If you haven't already seen their CMT Crossroads episode, you should check it out.
Pretty sure the two are food friends! But don’t quote me on that haha
Their CMT Crossroads collaboration is phenomenal.

John Lennon's songs are going to live forever.
L John well they have this far since 63 buddy, he was the best beatle the only one who made it alone, McCartney and the wings had 2 hits, George Harrison did OK with the travelling wilberries but John was the man, the best vocal the best writer and a better guitarist than Harrison
Better guitarist than Harrison he wasn't but the brains behind songwriting. and his vocals made them. His passing was a big blow
Yet again Ringo always getting left out lmao!!
@@keithybearman4978 you obviously haven't done your research if you think that Paul McCartney flopped as a solo artist

I love that at 1:30 John reckons he doens't quite have his vocal range back to sing the next lines and he just looks at Keith and he understands immediately hahaha
casper van helvoirt How are you sure of that? He could have just checked to confirm Keith was joining him.
Cody Church It's a high pitched part (don't know if that's correct english), and back in 2013 when this was performed, John wasn't recovered yet from his granuloma (vocalchord problems). So that's why, I guess. And Keith's smiling, so he knows hahaha. but that's my guess
Thats what I was thinking too. Hahaha. At least John has his voice almost back now
casper van helvoirt Haha, I always thought it looked like the next line was actually Keith's part, but John noticed that Keith was nowhere near the mic, so he covered for him as KU rushed to the mic.
***** Hahaha that could be it aswell ;) But since they both have 4 lines to sing each time, I guess John just realised he could hit the high notes yet ^^
BRING BACK JOHN MAYER
Two straight men bringing out the best in each other.
Amen
What an odd formula ... Blues Guy John Mayer + Australian Country Guy Keith Urban + Old Beatles Song = Monstrously Great Jam! I couldn't put this on my playlist fast enough!
Keith Urban is originally from New Zealand. Born in my home town too haha
I immediately added it to my play list also. And I loved it way back when by the Beatles.. ❤
Keith Urban is an animal on those SOLOS... I think Keith Urban is a SOUL player that resorted to Country to pay the bills...Damn that was good.
I don't think Keith needs any help paying the bills.

Dragged my husband to a Keith Urban concert a few years ago. Begrudgingly. He changed to a huge fan and still is.
Hello Beautiful song
I dragged my husband to a John Mayer concert almost 20 years. He changed to a huge fan. I have seen him 14 times since! Hoping to get to a Keith Urban concert someday!
The tone that Mayer comes in with at 4:12....Dear god!
Big eargasm time
An unbelievably beautiful tribute to John Lennon by two musical geniuses

Watch them do Sweet Thing together. Best ever jamming.

MrWeareone777 agreed 100%
Without words John gave Keith one of the best honest compliments one could give
that's one of the best performancess of all time, should be on Spotify IMHO
1:31-1:34 Keith helps out with a high pitch note is the most wholesome scene. Point, JM was a year into his throat surgery and was still finding his feat
My favourite part....
coolest part is keith had the same surgery 2 years before this!
Another preference...WOW Keith Urban can be fabulous with each artist he lets into his already divine style which I LOVE, have for many generations. Keepem coming Man, you are my Blessing 🤗💗😘
I thought he was just trying to sing over him
I dont hear any problems with Johns voice

Zane Carney can rip it man. Look at the version of dear marie in Letterman. Carney is at his finest there.

Freek van den Oetelaar 😂😂😂👍🏻
When John is singing the bridge you can tell the high notes are coming and he doesn't have the range, Keith's face lights up in the background and he leaps forward to hit the high notes "...It's a love that lasts forever.." And they both just smile. Keith knew he needed to jump in.
Dank moment.
this was when john had his vocal issues so its kind of sad to see :(
DBEENE123 If John wasn’t having vocal issues during this performance he’d hit some heavenly high notes. His performance in LA of Neon shows his incredible range
Right before that, John gives him an upwards head nod to let Keith know he needs to take it
You kmow how many times they probably practiced this song?
Alot, maybe I don't know
@@spongboobman5860 a lot of artists don't. Pre-colab sessions, award show gigs, guest appearances... there are many interviews and documentaries showcasing the musicians ability to jump into songs with little practice. Keith Urban is such an under rated talent.
do you think he was John Denver?
it took him along time to get strong vocals, check out his early singing it was beyond horrible till he got retrained.
This performance should be Performed at the Super Bowl man. Love from the Philippines
Instead of debating which one is better, why don't we focus on how awesome these guys are together?

They each have their own different styles so its really hard to debate on which one is better. Personally I think JM is but Keith is right up there with him. Agreed though, together they are awesome!
Absolutely!!

John Mayer is hands down one of the finest guitarist of all time.
Mate, he is unbelievable but your statement is a "bit" of an overstatement.
Definitely in the top 20 all time. Which is very very impressive. He's my all time favorite, well maybe tied at #1 with Randy Rhoads. Lol
No doubt, and Keith is at least as fine.
Just a little bit lower from The Big Time Rock N Rollers.

Keith and John can make their guitars laugh and cry. Just plain beautiful.
Mayer kills it over Keith on guitar
Oh those bass lines are the ones that give this music life

Was looking for someone to comment that- great song originally and it takes a fantastic yet simple bassline to support these beautiful solos.
my favorite part about this double guitar solo is that it's actually a triple guitar solo. Took me about until about the 6th or 7th listening to properly notice it, but the third guitarist is doing some pad-like lines during the quiet part that I think really work well with the star duo. Props to who ever that guy is! Playing supplemental yet non-intrusive stuff is an art on it's own
That’s John’s band so has to be Zane Carney.
No Literally the guy was holding it all together super well which is impressive considering it’s John Mayer and Keith urban
Check out how he plays the first solo on Queen of California from this concert.

Haha
lol
Let’s keep in mind how tense of a time this was for Mayer. Any big JM fans know that though this performance is mind blowing, but the vocals lacked. John was going through a real tough time here: a year from his throat surgery and rediscovering his voice and some of the missing pieces he lost. The world saw him as an ego-headed womanizer, but that’s not who John is and this moment in time was a major turning point for him as a musician and a man

Special K not making excuses, just giving more a reason to appreciate and understand
