I'm a huge Mayer fan and while I first watched this performance I was totally expecting him to overshadow Keith. But I had no idea Keith was such a killer player himself. Those licks were amazing.
I have been waiting for this video to drop for years! Finally!! My favorite part of this live performance is that this was during the time when John Mayer was having issues with his voice. You can see John feel his voice going out at 5:07, looks to Keith, Keith fills in seamlessly. These two have the best chemistry on stage.
Agreed I've been waiting for Michael to cover this! Also how great is the part when Kieth's strap comes off and John helps him get it back on YET Kieth hops right back in like he never missed a beat!
I thought John sang when he didn't mean to and then handed it over to Kieth. Either way, I picked up on it also. The help with the guitar strap was so pro too.
I was at this show. I love John. He’s one of the greatest to ever do it. But holy hell, I was flat out not expecting Keith to be THAT good. Tone was in the pocket, vocals were solid. His solos transcended that night.
@@marcavus1 It is mostly because he sticks to the modern country style and that has a limited appeal to most of us. But when he slides over to the rock and blues side of the road _watch out!_ Glenn Campbell called Keith the best guitarist in the world before he died. And Glenn could play virtually any style of music and really knew his stuff! 🎸🎸🎸😎👌👀💖
@@marcavus1 Agree. I've been watching KU for many years. He's a major player. I think many don't know of his playing that much because he's a country music guy, but he can rock with the best of them.
I just don't like KU putting that much country flavor in the song. It is still a Beatles song, so it should not lose its rock n roll approach. Even Keith's singing is really country. as a true Beatles fan, I always look for the Beatles intent/approach to it. Country is a 180-degree turn from the Beatles.
I've seen Keith twice live and this man can play guitar in any type of music situation with the best of them. He started out country but he is more rock and always has been. He could play guitar in any band and not break a sweat.
Perfect song for the two of them because neither one let the other down. They both worked/performed so well together and had each other's back. I could watch this performance everyday and never tire of it ❤
When John starts singing and backs off, Keith picks it up and runs with it... that's so cool! Bandmates looking out for each other. If I remember correctly John had recently had throat surgery when this performance happened and was not at 100%. You can tell that he's limiting his range, trying not to strain.
I don’t think that is the way it went. Keith was supposed to sing that verse, but he was distracted. That’s why he is smiling because he knew he missed his cue. John covered for him. They were alternating verses.
@@jeffainsley6000 no, he had actually done surgery on it a less than a few months before and couldn’t hit his whole vocal range, this whole verse was johns, and thats why he looked at keith and he smiled at him after he sang it
Keith helping John with his vocals. John helping Keith with his guitar strap. Class acts for both of them. Watch them both on CMT Crossroads too. It’s equally incredible
This is the song that made me listen to John Mayer and made me like him. Made me give him a chance with Dead and Co. Just got back from LA for the tour opener. Had no idea Keith was legit as well. The little stuff John does at the end with the popping and sweet little rhythm groove. Love it.
Of course the bass player is killing it. It’s Sean Hurley, he’s the best kept secret in LA. Probably one of the smoothest session guys EVER. Yes I said ever.
I always wished to hear this again now that John’s voice is back ,this was soon after his return from the vocal surgery still phenomenal tho these two playing are goated
Always loved this version since I found it years ago. Loved seeing you react to this, showing every lick and chord. Learn something new every video. Thank you man.
Oh thank god you’re doing this video. I remember watching this live and it really turned me onto Mayer and made me respect Urban as an outstanding player!
Michael Palmisano, you are the G.O.A.T. So fun to watch you break down what these great guitar players are doing with your passion and your knowledge. Not even other great guitar players can do what you do in a manner that makes it so enjoyable to watch.
I'm totally hearing John channeling the great Derek Trucks from his performance on Midnight in Harlem at about 17:20. It made me think of the now famous video of them together with BB King. I think John, as a student of music himself, was particularly moved by Derek's playing style and emotive note choices. I think it's a feel that a lot of us strive to emulate. Both John and Keith are amazing players and songwriters in their own right.
Wonderful stuff Michael. I’ve watched the original video many times and this is a great supplement to help put words to what makes their respective solos so great. I’d been sleeping on Keith’s guitar talents. No longer.
Keith and John complement each other so incredibly well!! Keith playing very harmonic chordal tones and major stuff, while John just puts down the most badass minor blues (personally, hot take maybe, I think John's phrasing is the absolute best out of all blues players ever). Also I love how smooth John always switches between major and minor, always keeping it interesting! Keith is so underrated as a guitar player and I kinda just found that out so I guess I've got a whole lot of listening and learning to do!
Keith is a KILLER player. I love the major tonalities he outlines. Really this is where great country guitar shines imo, its some of the most tasteful use of pure major harmony. Also shoutout to Zane Carney, monster player and Johns rhythm guitarist during this era
Awesome video and love the analysis. Such an incredible performance from John and Keith and they sync so well even though they come from two very different backgrounds of playing.
October 2023...I keep coming back here. I know nothing about instruments and chords but I love the music and how you break it down. I love your channel, Michael. Have you done a video on the two of them doing Sweet Thing.
Keith Urban won me over on this performance and his live cover of To Love Somebody! If you haven’t seen/heard that yet, go there next! It doesn’t disappoint
When I first come across the video of this show they did together I was totally blown away by both players!! Totally incredible playing and Tone from both of them. Instantly had a whole new respect for them (Not to mention Vocals as well)
Michael, thanks so much for reacting to this! I'm a huge fan, and your videos here and on Guitargate have helped me in innumerable ways through my guitar journey. Thank you so much for what you do
This is the second Keith and John and its equally as great as Til Summer COmes Around fom CMT Crossroads.......the groove is nasty.....the guitar runs are insanely perfect.....it is so great to see great guitar players play live when they just let loose and let things just fly......Keith's guitar work is totally as only Keith can do it.......Keith is such an amazing guitar player......and then John comes in and takes to to Mayer heights....I know this may be sacrilegious to say but the only way to listen to Mayer is live .....he is so much greater live than anything he has put out on record.....the guitar breakdown section is sexy as hell and the both just play off of each other so well.....would love to hear them do this on record and even tour together and just jam all night that would be remarkable
First of all, your opening lick was very impressive. Second, thank you for reacting to this video, I've been obsessed with this performance. Let's see what you have to say
Keith maybe gets underrated on guitar because he’s mega famous as a country music star. I saw him play live in Australia years ago and he was killer with a choice of selected vintage guitars on stage Plus he had two other great players in his band as a bonus
I was at this concert, it was claptons crossroads 2013 at MSG. I actually had very good seats, it was amazing to watch live and it was cool because I personally always loved playing this song and I didn't think a lot of popular artists were covering it and then I saw this live and they did a beautiful job
Paisley is much closer to the skill of Gill. I don’t even put Mayer on the level of Gill or paisley. Keith is definitely an above average guitarist and great performer though.
yes. Urban and Stapleton are good guitarists. Vince shows he is a master on a different level. I bet they were very honored to share the stage with him.
Keith Urban has really solid alt rock chops. He's parlayed it into country, but it's really about the alt rock ballad. He's got all that Maj7 sweetness, not just the minir-over-major barbecue sauce.
Yeah this was absolutely amazing but have you heard John Mayer and Keith urban - sweet thing? HOLY SHIT THAT PERFORMANCE IS AMAZING! PLS REACT TO THAT ONE! JOHN AND KEITH ARE A POWER DUO❤❤❤
Love you advice about spacing voicings and staying out of the other guitar players way. Also gotta be listening to the steel guitar and keys voicings and not cluttering things up.
I'd love to see you do a reaction of Keith and John playing Till Summer Comes Around. I personally feel that is a much better performance than this amazing performance, they both just take it to totally another level.
Mike. You should break down. Led Zeppelin’s White Summer. Would love to here what u have to say about that one. It’s on the “How the West Was Won” DVD.
I'm a huge Mayer fan and while I first watched this performance I was totally expecting him to overshadow Keith. But I had no idea Keith was such a killer player himself. Those licks were amazing.
Total bad ass. As good as they come.
Oh yeah, Keith is one of the country greats at guitar. What's cool is how different both their styles are, yet how well they mesh.
Nice to see someone finally mention just how crazy good Keith Urban is on guitar. He's a bad Mo-Fo
Keith is underrated. Deserves more recognition as a player for sure
Crazy how little respect he gets. The man can play.
I have been waiting for this video to drop for years! Finally!!

I can't believe so many did not know how great Kieth Urban is. Based on these comments he might be the most underrated player in popular music.

And Micheal missed that moment haha
I actually hit the comments to see if this was addressed. Didn’t know he was fresh from surgery. Urban seemed to kinda laugh about it.
I don’t think that is the way it went. Keith was supposed to sing that verse, but he was distracted. That’s why he is smiling because he knew he missed his cue. John covered for him. They were alternating verses.
