I said I had not and was untrained. He encouraged me to get some training and said he heard an instrument that could be developed but had not been trained. I was devastated at the time but I held to his advice sought out a voice teacher and began a path of learning how to sing and finding so much more enjoyment in music. I am grateful that he encouraged me that I could be better. Those judges work long days on those auditions and he didn't have to take the time but I think he remembers all the encouragement he received and how much it helped him.

I just met Keith Urban 90 minutes ago outside of the bluebird cafe here in Nashville. He’s my idol for 20 years. He was so nice and listening to me ramble. He’s well known in Nashville for being so sweet to fans.
I saw Keith perform two nights ago in the local Bucee’s parking lot (Athens,AL.) He performed a free show that was only announced a few hours beforehand. About 10,000 people showed up. Before the show he was inside the Bucee’s preparing brisket for the customers. The show was phenomenal and Keith is as humble as a superstar can possibly be.
My thoughts as well. I'm not crazy about Country, and I don't generally care for Keith's music, but he's always come across as a very down to earth, normal type of guy...not just a celebrity with a production team.
Keith’s guitar playing is amazing. I used to listen to more country and found Keith with Golden Road and stayed with him until about 10 years ago, but everytime I hear a song of his… I always generally like it. Never really feels like country tho - more country rock or pop rock.

Keith's Crossroads "duet" with John Mayer was absolutely top and for anyone who doesn't know how great a guitar player he is, watching him with Mayer tells you all you need to know. If I had my wish, Mr Urban and Mr Mayer would tour together from time to time, especially here in England and Europe and I know the demand for tickets would be enormous. For me, it's guitars first, but they are great singers, harmonise together like they were born to it and the combination of Urban and Mayer songs is second to none. I just need some ruby slippers to make my wish on...
I don’t usually comment on social media but this interview warmed my heart. I immediately remembered seeing a young boy playing in a cover band on a truck bed outside of the Bundaberg distillery in Queensland many years ago. At that time I had no idea who he was and didn’t even know he could sing. Over the years that young boy turned into a musician that continues to warm my heart, not just for his music but for the joy, enthusiasm and humility he brings to his art. A lovely interview Rick and Keith

Glad to see this one. In my Nashville years, I was supporting Curb records artist, Shane McAnally and wound up on a radio station promo gig with Keith, who had just launched his solo career after his band The Ranch had folded, in Mobile, Alabama. After out set, Keith came up and paid me some nice compliments on my playing and I returned them after his set. Months later, I ran into him at the Sportsman's Grille restaurant in Nashville and we had a brief reunion in the parking lot where I was letting my dog out of the car and he said how much he loved my dog. We wound up on festival bills several times over the years and I have enjoyed watching him blossom as an artist and achieve such success.
His cover of the BeeGees “To Love Somebody” …can listen over and over. You can tell from listening to him speak that he LOVES music. And that’s a wonderful thing.
Saw Keith Urban at Houston Rodeo concert a few years ago. Even though he performed in a venue on a stage surrounded by 50K fans, he had the ability to make it seem very personal and intimate. His personality is so natural and authentic, it didn’t seem like he was far away. Sharing his talent and joy of performing was pure and uplifting. Great experience!

Doesn’t get any better than these two great human beings on screen together. Thanks to them both for an education in music, creativity, inspiration, communication and mutual respect. Rick, you did it again, we love you 🙏
It's a testament to Rick's skill as an interviewer that Keith's accent got more and more Australian as the interview went on and he felt more comfortable.
This is a fabulous interview-one of the best I've seen! You mentioned Mary Martin, and I haven't thought of her in years. She used to come into my garden center in Nashville (Moore & Moore), and we would talk forever. She was one of the coolest people I knew..
I absolutely love Keith Urban’s work. I’m not a big country fan per se, but this guy’s music is great. Plus, he’s a fabulous guitar player. My wife and I have seen him live three times. Bravo for getting the biggest of the biggest, Rick !!
Keith will be the first to tell you, he’s no country artist. He’s just a musician who plays pop/rock music. He just happened to find himself on country radio. He always thought it was because he played a lot of Telecaster stuff.
Thank you so much for having Keith on Rick!!! He's been my favorite artist/guitarist for a long time, and I really enjoyed listening to the two of you! The interviews you do and all of your other content is amazing and we are all lucky to have you spreading all this joy and love for music! Thank you sir!
I'm an Aussie but not a country or Keith bloke. Watched this on a whim and was really blown away by the articulate wisdom, anecdotes with meaning and Rick's ability to get it happening. Love when Keith starts interviewing Rick in a couple of spots. I play music from a completely different world but I'm going back to this to grab a couple of the key insights that spoke to me and I can use. Cheers mate, ripper interview!
Keith Urban bought my very first guitar build in 2013. I wish I could get in touch with the guy to thank him all these years later my brand is doing well. I display at NAMM etc.
Fantastic interview! Keith is a guitar player's guitar player. Great questions Rick and I love your channel! I love that Keith was so candid and so honest with his answers. Thank you!
I listened to Avenged Sevenfold and Five Finger Death Punch before discovering Urban. I loathed country music. I worked at a Tex Mex restaurant that only played country. I swore my ears bled daily and then a song came on after close….take your records take your freedom take your memories I don’t need ‘em…I immediately said who sings THIS??? Keith Urban. My husband just walked out so it was the right song at the right time. I got my first guitar because of Keith!!!! I adore country music.
Dang that short story about the engineer putting the mics where the guy's ears were and it sounded great was funny. What a great example of brilliant simplicity. Great interview, Rick!
Thank you Rick and Keith. This was my dream interview for this channel and it did not disappoint. You asked Keith many questions I've wondered about. Please come back again Keith.
Amazing. I love how Keith asks Rick questions back. It's a two-way interview. He's not just interested in hearing about himself. What an awesome guy! In concert Keith just blew me away with his talent.
I can see the joy in his expression from playing the most simple chords. Pure joy that music gives back to anyone at any level. Guys like Keith are everyone's inspiration, no matter what your genre of music is.
It's late night.. said I'm only watching a few mins of this.. but nope.. All the way to the end. As always.. excellent, informative, entertaining, honest and genuine. Both cats. Keep em coming.
These interviews are so great because musos are huge music nerds themselves so of course they’re going to enjoy talking with another music nerd about their music. How refreshing it must be for them to be appreciated like this and not asked about inane celebrity crap. I love these technical and behind the scenes interviews .. great work Rick.

Omg! This is the best interview I've ever heard that really allows you to realize the guitar and musical genius that is Keith's own, uniquely! I may not know what he's referring to, but I do understand that he does and is so knowledgeable and experienced in the guitar world as well as the music he's inspired to create. He is such a deep well of knowledge and wisdom!!
The spirit of the song , that’s the greatest phrase I heard in along long time, Keith is spot on , the sound is different on whatever speakers you listening to anyway , great interview , this makes my day, again
"Wherever it sounds good, put the mics there." Perfect. I'm not a country fan but Keith is among a handful of country artists who are so phenomenally talented and so grounded in their approach to their craft and the trappings of "fame" that I feel like I could sit with them in a booth at a diner for days having great philosophical discussions about art and business. ---- Had to edit this... "You know what that sounds like? Like guys who don't have cellphones..." LOL. the perfect encapsulation of the difference between 70s musicians and those of the present.
I've watched/listened countless interviews with Keith and even if I've heard the answers before, I never tire from hearing them again. Keith is so genuine, witty, talented, knowledgeable and smart. Love him. ❤❤️🔥🎸🎤
It opens up so much for you Rick with your music knowledge, techniques, and teaching capabilities, so many musicians want to do interviews with someone who understands them. Another fantastic interview with an excellent artist like Mr. Urban.

I’ve seen dozens of bands live in the last 40 years. Mostly rock, metal, and prog. One of the best concerts I’ve seen was Keith Urban. Phenomenal player and performer.
Good old Kiwi , moved over to Queensland , Australia . Lived down the road in Caboulture . His Mum lives here in the Sunshine coast . Great talent and super nice guy.
Dakabin High! I had a mate who showed me his old class photos, in which there was a little sandy-haired K.Urban. We used to compete against them in sports, but I think Keith was spending all his time playing guitar ... time well spent!
This is one I’m watching. I’ve seen many many hard rock concerts starting in the 80’s and I promise you Keith is right there on top with the best of them…
Such a great conversation. I love it when Rick asks Keith to playing something and he just strums an A chord. That's his genuine humility. He knows he could shred something crazy or riff something funky, but he just strums the A and talks about tone. So good! Listening to the artist talk about his love for the art is just priceless.
I just saw him live at Turning Stone. The man is absolutely incredible, as a songwriter, musician, virtuoso guitarist, and performer. I am in awe. Love his band too .
I'm also not a social media commentator, but I could not stop watching and listening to this banter between mates. Thanks for letting us be a part of your world.
Great interview! Keith is as real as his music! I recently heard Keith on the show "Opry". It was just him and an acoustic guitar. Stripped down or with a band his talent shines through.
I loved that Keith came back and asked Rick questions too. I think that shows how relaxed he was. Rick is a master of getting people to forget their being interviewed.
Not only how relaxed Keith was, but how much he respects Rick - he clearly was interested in Rick’s opinions.
Yes he is master of that too❤🙏

Taling. About
Keith is such a cool dude. About 12 years ago I auditioned for American Idol in Chicago. I made it past the producer auditions and got a chance to do the TV audition. I was very raw and the audition did not go as well as I would have liked. Randy, Mariah, and Nicky gave me curt "no's" but Keith took the time to talk to me. He asked if I had ever got voice lessons.
He was such a good, compassionate judge and his authentically being a fan of music, and "feeling" toward the contestants came through. He just seems like a good dude. Tks for sharing that story and I'm glad his "mentoring" advice helped you on your musical journey. Totally unsurprising. He's the only one with a soul (or SOUL).

I effin love his tone on the duet with John Mayer/Dont let me down live
Spot on! The way he holds that note-bend…amazing
Rick, thank you for this great interview. I could listen to you too all day.
Doesn’t get any better than these two great human beings on screen together. Thanks to them both for an education in music, creativity, inspiration, communication and mutual respect. Rick, you did it again, we love you 🙏
Keith Urban fan. He always leads me to interesting people. Now I need to watch all of your videos. Amazing channel. Thank you!
I'm also not a country guy but I've seen him live and he's amazing. He's a great player and a great showman.
It's a testament to Rick's skill as an interviewer that Keith's accent got more and more Australian as the interview went on and he felt more comfortable.
Monster guitar player, musician, performer!
This is a fabulous interview-one of the best I've seen! You mentioned Mary Martin, and I haven't thought of her in years. She used to come into my garden center in Nashville (Moore & Moore), and we would talk forever. She was one of the coolest people I knew..
I remember when she was Warners NYC back in the early 70s
I absolutely love Keith Urban’s work. I’m not a big country fan per se, but this guy’s music is great. Plus, he’s a fabulous guitar player. My wife and I have seen him live three times. Bravo for getting the biggest of the biggest, Rick !!
Keith will be the first to tell you, he’s no country artist. He’s just a musician who plays pop/rock music. He just happened to find himself on country radio. He always thought it was because he played a lot of Telecaster stuff.
Thank you Rick. These interviews are the best thing on the Internet, a true gift to humanity. 🙏🏼
His attitude and outlook is refreshing and inspirational. Really good interview, thanks Rick.
Such a great interview and shows Keith Urban's humility and talent whilst showing how good Rick's questions are.
Loved it
Yesssss. “Playing inspired just works, even if you’ve got a shitty tone” - Keith is the man. Great to see you guys together!
Keith Urban bought my very first guitar build in 2013. I wish I could get in touch with the guy to thank him all these years later my brand is doing well. I display at NAMM etc.
Just another outstanding interview. Keith, you are an inspiration to me. Rick, thanks for bringing this to us. Cheers.
What a wonderful conversation. Thank you, Rick!
I’ve been waiting for this one. Love that guy. And Rick as well.
Rick always makes whom ever he interviews feel very comfortable and they seem to really open up
💫Love how thoughtful and insightful Keith’s answers and commentary are … and nobody better than Rick to interview him !🎸 🎙️
Fantastic interview! Keith is a guitar player's guitar player. Great questions Rick and I love your channel! I love that Keith was so candid and so honest with his answers. Thank you!
I have become a Keith Urban fan because of this interview, what a real person, not pretentious at all.
Great conversation. You can sense how fun it was to talk about each topic.
Dang that short story about the engineer putting the mics where the guy's ears were and it sounded great was funny. What a great example of brilliant simplicity. Great interview, Rick!
It is so interesting to see the chemistry develop on these interviews. Another great interview!
This is a fabulous interview-one of the best I've seen! You mentioned Mary Martin, and I haven't thought of her in years. She used to come into my garden center in Nashville (Moore & Moore), and we would talk forever. She was one of the coolest people I knew.
Great conversation!
Love the way this man talks about his colleagues/ friends, and himself: very healthy, humorous and real vibes.
A good friend wrote one of Keith's biggest hits. And Dan Huff is an amazing producer! Another great interview, Rick!
great interview lads...lovely...but tell him he needs to work on his impression of me a little more...
Haha!!!
He can imitate your voice but never the emotional intensity of your sound. There is only one uncle !
@Inthewind88 there's only 1 Keith Urban, too. Unique musician in every aspect and still so much more to come ! ❤️
The spirit of the song , that’s the greatest phrase I heard in along long time, Keith is spot on , the sound is different on whatever speakers you listening to anyway , great interview , this makes my day, again
GREAT conversation. keith urban is so open and humble.
It's great to listen to a true artist speak. "Art for art's sake". Inspiration is everything.
Urban.
Another great interview. Keith is so relaxed and he comes up with some great anecdotes and insights. Good man.
I love watching Keith play live. He always looks like he's having so much fun.
Just a great interview. Urban is a great conversationalist . Rick amazing job. These will last and be watched a decade from now.
What a wonderful, inspiring interview! Rick, Keith is so lucky to have had the chance to talk with you 😊🧡💛
So thrilled to hear you mention " Sneakin Sally". So much soul on that album. "How Much Fun" is my go to when I'm over thinking driving myself into the ground about something. It always makes me smile. Out of all the people in the whole Keith....you are in my top 5 of people I would love to meet just to say "THANK YOU" for what you've given me. No selfies...no autographs....just...THANK YOU
I’ve seen dozens of bands live in the last 40 years. Mostly rock, metal, and prog. One of the best concerts I’ve seen was Keith Urban. Phenomenal player and performer.
I’ve seen Kieth Urban 12 times and loves him every time. The first time I saw him, he opened for Kenney Chesney.
I like how he came back with really good questions to you. That's a thoughtful friend but it also shows he wants to learn things or understand more.
Roots in Central Otago! Our great grandmothers were sisters.
Guys and gear. Doesn’t get much purer than this. Love it!❤
I've seen Keith in concert many times. Incredibly talented guitarist, vocalist, and performer.
"Tell me why?" The best question to ask in any interview. What a great, entertaining and insightful conversation.
Loved the early 2000s Keith Urban, songs like Better Life, Somebody Like You and Days Go By.
All produced by Dann Huff! Amazing music that sounds just as good today as it did back then. Classics!
I just saw him live at Turning Stone. The man is absolutely incredible, as a songwriter, musician, virtuoso guitarist, and performer. I am in awe. Love his band too .
testing the mix on an am radio in a pickup truck with bad reception, fading in and out, but you love the sound and spirit of the song, that's gold🤌
