It's ridiculous when you look at the volume of hit songs and records he was involved in that decade. It's not that he's ever been forgotten, but people think of Madonna or Prince or Michael Jackson as the premier stars of the 80s, but take a look at Phil's catalog; take a look at his sales figures. Astounding!
If this were the era of cable, they'd have their own 24h channel and it would be getting insane hours of viewing, everyone happily does rewatches of whatever would be on.
My late father worked closely with Phil as he owned a company that designed and built music stages. He ended up building the set for the carousel tour. Even after working with Iron Maiden, Michael Jackson, Metallica and many more, Phil was always Dad's favourite project. I still have an awesome autograph that Phil did for me when I was a baby complete with a self stick man drawing of himself on the drums which is one of absolute prize possessions.
The amount of shit Phil Collins got from many, just because he was mega successful, popular, and constantly on the radio. When in reality Phil is one of the greatest talents in music history -- drummer, pianist, singer, songwriter -- an absolute legend! Netflix needs to do a biography on him and Genesis.
As I am over 60 years old, I was able to follow Mr. Phillip Collins' career since Genesis. I was able to see him "live" in Rio de Janeiro, in 1978, as a teenager, already assuming the role of vocalist along with the drums (and the "luxurious help" of Chester Thompson). When he became a "pop" success, I didn't forget his time as a great drummer in one of the biggest bands of all time.
@petrospaulos7736 the closest I've come to that was seeing The Musical Box performing the 1973 set! How did you find out about Genesis back then, and what specific memories do you have of the show?
I met Phil Collins at a small village charity fair where one of the organisers, my mother in law, had invited him to attend to help bring some more than the expected 20 people. Phil never replied... He just turned up! What an incredible person! We had an amazing day, raised a LOT of money for the local charity. A humble man, who is just an amazing human being! Beautiful to watch this interview!
I lost tears now. There will never be another musical genius like Phil Collins. I am so grateful for his fantastic music. My life was much better because of him. Actually not a single day goes by without the wonderful memories of the best decade of my life. The 80´s. Phil is and will remain a huge global superstar. His energy on stage was outstanding! Yes, although I took piano as a kid and went to drums around 7 or 8 years old but got into guitar around 11 years old cause I heard Randy Rhoads for the first time, however cause back in the late 80's everyone had a guitar it seemed, I played drums in a few garage bands, but guitar mainly, but I've been told I"m a better drummer than guitar player. But I love guitar.

As I got older (I'm 38) I feel more and more moved by elder people. I don't know why. Maybe I'm not as self-centered as I was when I was younger, but I constantly notice myself feeling for the old, anonymous people on the streets. Especially those who look fragile and lonely. I got the same feeling during the first seconds of this video.
Finally someone giving Phil the drumming icon respect he deserves. One of the most successful, greatest singers and songwriters in prog and pop and then rock but his drummer from his earliest years was utterly astounding. Thank you Drumeo. Phil is the reason I’m a drummer and singer and then songwriter and multi instrumentalist. I can’t overstate the influence Phil, Brand X, Genesis and his solo career has had on my life. Peart and the rest were amazing but Phil really was the best of all of them because it was so musical. Totally overlooked for so much of his career. I can’t wait for the world to rediscover him. He hit the drum once and I immediately got sent back to ‘only you know and I know’ and Duke. Unbelievable.
I was born in ‘76. I didn’t appreciate Phil Collins when his music was happening in real time, but his music brings me back to another time, another place when I was a young kid that had all my life in front of me. So much time has passed in the blink of an eye. I want to thank Mr. Collins for the memories. I appreciate you now.

I was 9 years old when Tarzan came out and brought Phil Collins and his music into my life. Over the next quarter of a century, he has brought me back from the brink so many times, seeing him live is something I'll never forget. Thank-You for this. Seriously.
I wanted a drum kit when I was 5 years old so I could sound like Phil. That was a pointless purchase, because I was born with cerebral palsy and could never even hold a stick, but my parents bought it for me anyway and took my picture in front of it. That was 35 years ago. Phil has always been my idol and I'm very grateful to Brandon for this documentary. If Brandon is ever willing to do my podcast, I would be eternally honored. I cannot state enough how much of an influence Phil Collins had on me as a musician. I was born in '72 and by the time I was 16, an older bandmate introduced me to Brand X's album Moroccan Roll. Before that I knew him as a rock and pop drummer, but that album completely blew my mind. As a drummer myself, he's been my favorite drummer ever since...
Thank you so much to all involved in this homage to the greatest drummer of my infancy !!!! The first music song I learned was "the duchess" from the most underated The Duke album which, for me is my favourite of the Genesis. All solo albums made my teenage years where I can still remember (and know all the musics by heart) the romantic innocence and rythms that stay with me for all my life. Thak you so much PHIL you are part of the family you deserve to be honoured and remembered as the truly great rock drummer you will allways be!!! I always called Phil Mr. Heavy Hands. He's just got that rock-solid feel no matter what he's playing. Kept Genesis thoroughly grounded no matter how grandiose things got up top.
Love Phil Collins and this documentary is perfect! . But man at 73yrs old, life has taken its toll on him. Alcoholism, Type 2 diabetes, hearing loss, multiple divorces, various surgeries, battled years of depression and a life on the road touring... Hang in there Phil, we love you!!
I don't think anybody understands the depth of musicianship that this man had. Drummer, singer, keyboardist,actor, priducer, and one of the most unique playing Styles and drumming sounds in the history of popular music. Well deserved rest is now in order for this legend.

Phil Collins will always have a special place in my heart. What a legend! Growing up in the 80s, Phils influence on us as young musicians was HUGE, with GENESIS and as a solo artist. It saddens me deeply to see him so fragile now, not being able to play drums anymore. He deserved a better retirement after all he´s done. Whatever happens, your legacy will live on forever! It’s a bit hard to take. Collins was one of my musical heroes especially in the 70’s. His pop stuff wasn’t my favorite version but he’s a prog rock icon, legend, entertainer and totally brilliant. How could anyone albeit a drummer replace Peter Gabriel? Yet he did without a hitch and moved the band from the late 70’s to the 80’s. You can’t say enough about his brilliance. We love you Phil. Thank you for everything.
I wasn't planning on crying this morning, but contrast of the legacy of this man, the sheer talent, the impact of his work, his affable personality and father time is hitting pretty hard. Gotta say this was in incredible watch, and I am insanely jealous you all got to meet him. I saw Phil during his solo peak in Berlin. A legend. I cant imagine whats its like to be his son. What a source of information and stories. Drumeo outdid themselves. Seeing Phil in his condition makes one realize that time flies. I wish him the best.

This guy's music has passed on from generations to generations, my parents were listening to him in 70s, my older brother and sister were playing his records in 80s, and I grew up listening to him in 90s, and in 2000s, he opened another page in his career with Tarzan soundtrack, and the fact that he played all of these different types of music throughout his career is just incredible... hats off to Phil Collins, a true artist... and a huge thanks to Drumeo, who reminded the world that there is a legend living on this planet, who we must cherish while he is still with his... thanks Phil for all those great songs and feelings you made us feel... greetings to all music lovers from Turkey!
Getting old really sucks, seeing Phil like this pulls my heart strings, so many beautiful memories of his music will be forever with us, a literal legend and loved this video.
It's not really age. In the case of Phil, he has had a list of health issues for some time now and they kept piling up and this is the end result (i.e., Diabetes, alcoholism, hearing loss, multiple surgeries to his neck and spine, nerve damage, etc).
I've been a fan of Phil and his drumming since the early eighties. With each passing year it seems that I grow more appreciative, and in awe, of what he brought to the table. And he may downplay his singing a bit, but when he was at the top of his game, he was fantastic. Certainly one of my biggest inspirations, ever. Can't wait to watch this after work today!
There are no words I can come up with to describe what I just watched, I am sitting here in tears. I know it was 2 hours, but I wish it could have been longer. I grew up in the 80's and Phil was all over everywhere. It truly was the best of times. Like so many others, he inspired me to play the drums, and the joy that has given my life is immeasurable. Really loved this documentary/interview. Having Nic Collins interview his father! Very moving. I wanted to share this story with the drumming community. 1986 I was in basic training for the US AIR FORCE. About three weeks into training we were cleaning the dorms for inspection and the guys started singing songs. We ran through a few tunes like "Stand By Me" etc. Some one started singing "In The Air Tonight" Everyone knew the words and joined in. When the drum fill came up, the whole squadron sang that iconic drum fill!!!! My faith in humanity had been set in stone in that moment!l Thank you Phil Collins! Lackland Air Force Base 1986
What a legend! Back in the 1980s when I was a young lad, my family was living on a remote island in Micronesia and it was there I was gifted the Invisible Touch album in cassette form. I must have listened to that cassette a thousand times on probably 3-4 different Walkmans over the years (when I could afford the batteries that is). Eventually I found myself back in the States, working and was able afford more albums and listened to almost everything dozens of time. My family made fun of me for liking Phil Collins, but he is such an icon I didn’t care what they thought. What a wonderful documentary and all I can say is thank you to Phil for all the music!

I grew up listening to Phil Collins, my Dad was a die hard fan. In grade school music class, Phil Collins was in the music history book for being one of the most influential drummers of the 70s and 80s. I don't think anyone else in the class knew who Phil Collins was, but I sure did! Took my Dad to see Phil Collins for his birthday. It was a good birthday.
The best advise this guy gave me: Let the drum sing, let the head do the work for you, don't force your stick into the drumkit. It was a clinic when I just started to learn drums. Some other great drummers were there as well. But yeah, great guy. He probaly doesn't remember, but that advice I still take to the heart❤️

Phil Collins is my all time favorite solo artist. His work has touched my life in numerous ways since I was a child. My late brother, Rich, loved his music as well and anytime I hear Phil’s incredible voice, I am always IMMEDIATELY flooded by memories of Rich, and that is such a gift. Phil Collins has also been a tremendous influence on my music, and to be both a generational singer AND drummer is a testament to his greatness. I was lucky to get to see him perform in 2004. His work with Genesis is just as legendary, with songs like No Son of Mine, Jesus He Knows Me, Land of Confusion, Dreaming While You Sleep, and Driving the Last Spike. An absolutely legendary artist in every aspect. Thank you for your contribution to music, Phil. The world wouldn’t be as bright without it. Thank you Brandon and Drumeo for this documentary. It is a wonderful gift during this Christmas season.
Phil is the soundtrack to my 80s childhood. I'm a guitarist, not a drummer, but long before I ever picked up an instrument, I was drawn to Phil's drums. It's the voice of his music and wherever he contributed drums for others. If you haven't dug into Phil's immense catalog of music, you better go have a listen and really appreciate a true craftsman of his art. Thank you, Phil! Four minutes in and I'm already moved to tears. His impact on my drumming is undeniable and proudly so. His vocal ability certainly is an extension of his drumming and it's probably why his voice has become so personal to me.

Phil Collins is a GD legend and nobody will ever make me believe differently. His medical issues have made it hard for him, but he is still one of the best musicians out there. He's brilliant and has been in the music industry for SO long -- I remember listening to his music with Genesis when I was 7 and I'm in my mid-40's now. This man will never be anything but a legend in my mind. He's brilliant and gifted, and I'm so glad he gave his gift to his son.
I love Phil Collins. I'm a fan of his work but the joy and happiness his music brought to my mother is priceless. I have nothing but the highest respect and appreciation for him and his work.
In 1980 I saw Genesis for the first time. They were coming out of the And then there was Three Tour and Duke had just been released. I went to see them as I was a Huge Fan of Genesis and Phil Collins at the LA Inglewood Forum. I had never heard the Forum Rumble so Loud then this Amazing Concert Duke Tour. I had first been introduced to Genesis in 1974/75 when I was 9 - 10 years old and from the Beginning Absolutely was Amazed by the Musicianship. I'm 59 years old now and still love listening to Genesis. So in total I have seen Genesis and Phil about 8 times and each and every show was Legendary. Thank You Drumeo for the Documentary. I wanted a drum kit when I was 5 years old so I could sound like Phil. That was a pointless purchase, because I was born with cerebral palsy and could never even hold a stick, but my parents bought it for me anyway and took my picture in front of it. That was 35 years ago. Phil has always been my idol and I'm very grateful to Brandon for this documentary. If Brandon is ever willing to do my podcast, I would be eternally honored. The book is great as well. Congratulations and thank you!

I cannot state enough how much of an influence Phil Collins had on me as a musician. I was born in '72 and by the time I was 16, an older bandmate introduced me to Brand X's album Moroccan Roll. Before that I knew him as a rock and pop drummer, but that album completely blew my mind. As a drummer myself, he's been my favorite drummer ever since...
Phil Collins is in fact a genius. I’ve been listening to him since I discovered him at 13 I’m 53. Seen him in concert and what a treat that was!
Thank you so much to all involved in this homage to the greatest drummer of my infancy !!!! The first music song I learned was "the duchess" from the most underated The Duke album which, for me is my favourite of the Genesis. All solo albums made my teenage years where I can still remember (and know all the musics by heart) the romantic innocence and rythms that stay with me for all my life. Thak you so much PHIL you are part of the family you deserve to be honoured and remembered as the truly great rock drummer you will allways be!!!

Love Phil Collins and this documentary is perfect! . But man at 73yrs old, life has taken its toll on him. Alcoholism, Type 2 diabetes, hearing loss, multiple divorces, various surgeries, battled years of depression and a life on the road touring... Hang in there Phil, we love you!!

I don't think anybody understands the depth of musicianship that this man had. Drummer, singer, keyboardist,actor, priducer, and one of the most unique playing Styles and drumming sounds in the history of popular music. Well deserved rest is now in order for this legend.

Phil Collins will always have a special place in my heart. What a legend! Growing up in the 80s, Phils influence on us as young musicians was HUGE, with GENESIS and as a solo artist. It saddens me deeply to see him so fragile now, not being able to play drums anymore. He deserved a better retirement after all he´s done. Whatever happens, your legacy will live on forever! Thanks Phil!

man, i was just watching some phil collins content these past week and i did not expect this documentary. WHAT A LEGEND.
It’s a bit hard to take. Collins was one of my musical heroes especially in the 70’s. His pop stuff wasn’t my favorite version but he’s a prog rock icon, legend, entertainer and totally brilliant. How could anyone albeit a drummer replace Peter Gabriel? Yet he did without a hitch and moved the band from the late 70’s to the 80’s. You can’t say enough about his brilliance. We love you Phil. Thank you for everything.

I wasn't planning on crying this morning, but contrast of the legacy of this man, the sheer talent, the impact of his work, his affable personality and father time is hitting pretty hard. Gotta say this was in incredible watch, and I am insanely jealous you all got to meet him. I'm also incredibly appreciative of the work the @drumeo team and @brandonToews put into this to share with us. When Phil and Stevie go, I am gonna shut down for weeks with a pile of vinyl (yes actual) and a case of tissue.

I saw Phil during his solo peak in Berlin. A legend. I cant imagine whats its like to be his son. What a source of information and stories. Drumeo outdid themselves. Seeing Phil in his condition makes one realize that time flies. I wish him the best.

This guy's music has passed on from generations to generations, my parents were listening to him in 70s, my older brother and sister were playing his records in 80s, and I grew up listening to him in 90s, and in 2000s, he opened another page in his career with Tarzan soundtrack, and the fact that he played all of these different types of music throughout his career is just incredible... hats off to Phil Collins, a true artist... and a huge thanks to Drumeo, who reminded the world that there is a legend living on this planet, who we must cherish while he is still with his... thanks Phil for all those great songs and feelings you made us feel... greetings to all music lovers from Turkey!

It's not really age. In the case of Phil, he has had a list of health issues for some time now and they kept piling up and this is the end result (i.e., Diabetes, alcoholism, hearing loss, multiple surgeries to his neck and spine, nerve damage, etc).
I've been a fan of Phil and his drumming since the early eighties. With each passing year it seems that I grow more appreciative, and in awe, of what he brought to the table. And he may downplay his singing a bit, but when he was at the top of his game, he was fantastic. Certainly one of my biggest inspirations, ever. Can't wait to watch this after work today!
There are no words I can come up with to describe what I just watched, I am sitting here in tears. I know it was 2 hours, but I wish it could have been longer. I grew up in the 80's and Phil was all over everywhere. It truly was the best of times. Like so many others, he inspired me to play the drums, and the joy that has given my life is immeasurable. Thank you Phil.

Really loved this documentary/interview. Having Nic Collins interview his father! Very moving. I wanted to share this story with the drumming community. 1986 I was in basic training for the US AIR FORCE. About three weeks into training we were cleaning the dorms for inspection and the guys started singing songs. We ran through a few tunes like "Stand By Me" etc. Some one started singing "In The Air Tonight" Everyone knew the words and joined in. When the drum fill came up, the whole squadron sang that iconic drum fill!!!! My faith in humanity had been set in stone in that moment!l Thank you Phil Collins! Lackland Air Force Base 1986
What a legend!
Back in the 1980s when I was a young lad, my family was living on a remote island in Micronesia and it was there I was gifted the Invisible Touch album in cassette form. I must have listened to that cassette a thousand times on probably 3-4 different Walkmans over the years (when I could afford the batteries that is). Eventually I found myself back in the States, working and was able afford more albums and listened to almost everything dozens of time. My family made fun of me for liking Phil Collins, but he is such an icon I didn’t care what they thought.
What a wonderful documentary and all I can say is thank you to Phil for all the music!

I grew up listening to Phil Collins, my Dad was a die hard fan. In grade school music class, Phil Collins was in the music history book for being one of the most influential drummers of the 70s and 80s. I don't think anyone else in the class knew who Phil Collins was, but I sure did! Took my Dad to see Phil Collins for his birthday. It was a good birthday.
Thank you for documenting these stories while Phil is still here to tell them. And thank you Phil. There will never be another.
Phil contributed to roughly 9 of the albums in my record collection and for that I thank him.
He is on 52 of mine and counting.
The best advise this guy gave me: Let the drum sing, let the head do the work for you, don't force your stick into the drumkit. It was a clinic when I just started to learn drums. Some other great drummers were there as well. But yeah, great guy. He probaly doesn't remember, but that advice I still take to the heart❤️

Phil Collins is my all time favorite solo artist. His work has touched my life in numerous ways since I was a child. My late brother, Rich, loved his music as well and anytime I hear Phil’s incredible voice, I am always IMMEDIATELY flooded by memories of Rich, and that is such a gift. Phil Collins has also been a tremendous influence on my music, and to be both a generational singer AND drummer is a testament to his greatness. I was lucky to get to see him perform in 2004. His work with Genesis is just as legendary, with songs like No Son of Mine, Jesus He Knows Me, Land of Confusion, Dreaming While You Sleep, and Driving the Last Spike. An absolutely legendary artist in every aspect. Thank you for your contribution to music, Phil. The world wouldn’t be as bright without it. Thank you Brandon and Drumeo for this documentary. It is a wonderful gift during this Christmas season.

Phil is the soundtrack to my 80s childhood. I'm a guitarist, not a drummer, but long before I ever picked up an instrument, I was drawn to Phil's drums. It's the voice of his music and wherever he contributed drums for others.
If you haven't dug into Phil's immense catalog of music, you better go have a listen and really appreciate a true craftsman of his art.

Phil Collins is a GD legend and nobody will ever make me believe differently. His medical issues have made it hard for him, but he is still one of the best musicians out there. He's brilliant and has been in the music industry for SO long -- I remember listening to his music with Genesis when I was 7 and I'm in my mid-40's now. This man will never be anything but a legend in my mind. He's brilliant and gifted, and I'm so glad he gave his gift to his son.
I love Phil Collins. I'm a fan of his work but the joy and happiness his music brought to my mother is priceless. I have nothing but the highest respect and appreciation for him and his work.
In 1980 I saw Genesis for the first time. They were coming out of the And then there was Three Tour and Duke had just been released. I went to see them as I was a Huge Fan of Genesis and Phil Collins at the LA Inglewood Forum. I had never heard the Forum Rumble so Loud then this Amazing Concert Duke Tour.
I had first been introduced to Genesis in 1974/75 when I was 9 - 10 years old and from the Beginning Absolutely was Amazed by the Musicianship.
I'm 59 years old now and still love listening to Genesis.
So in total I have seen Genesis and Phil about 8 times and each and every show was Legendary.
