So true! Drummer Chris McHugh was in a CCM band in the 80s called Whiteheart, and was a session player thru the 90s until Producer Dann Huff put him in the studio with Keith for Golden Road, then he became Keith's drummer for 15 years, in the studio and on the road. The Bass player, Jerry Flowers, has been with Keith since The Ranch in the '90s, and they are like brothers. Guitar 2, Chris Rodriguez, another awesome Nashville session player that Keith pirated. Guitar 3 at the time of this video, was a guy name Brian Nutter who eventually became a custom guitar craftsman. Keith always has some of the BEST people around him!
Always knew Keith Urban was a solid guitar player, but when I saw him and Mayer play "Don't Let Me Down" at Crossroads I was like dang this guy is incredible
Interestingly. Keith and John was better than Brad and John. I think Brad was too alien to John. I’m not sure but it wasn’t as good as it was on paper, and KUJM was better. Same can go for the BPKU collaboration...a bit of a let down. Still good but expectations were high I guess.

I took my wife to Keith Urban live in Madison Square Garden back in 2015 and he absolutely RIPPED! Unbelievable show. He made an entire arena feel like an intimate gathering. He's legit.
I used to do a cover of this almost 10 years ago. Such a great tune. Keith is so talented. He is the full package...great singing, songwriting, production, lyrics, and yes...an awesome guitarist.
He also plays a pretty great bass, piano and he writes his music not with a melody or with lyrics but with a beat on his drum machine. I find him amazing and unique and he has such a smooth vibrato and no conveys emotions better than Keith. You feel every single word!!! I’m glad you chose a live performance.
Keith is such a killer guitar player, soooo good! Would love to see you break down what he and John Mayer does when trading solos during their performance of Sweet Thing on CMT Crossroads!
I know nothing about guitars or playing them, but I love your videos. You’re always so positive and happy listening to someone’s music, and that’s so pleasant to watch. Thank you for sharing!!
First time I’ve ever heard this song, it tore me up. So much passion and feeling in that song. This is the version of this song people need to hear when they talk about this song, just....wow. Well done
You are as passionate as any musician I have ever listened to. I am a 62 y.o. Physician who still plays guitar everyday and I still am active in a cover band. Your passion inspires me every time I watch you. Thank you!
I remember the first time I heard the album version of this song. When it got to the guitar solo at the end, the way it comes in all slow and bendy, I remember thinking "this is what it sounds like when an instrument cries." That whole end section is like grief welling up inside you, and you try to push it back down but it can't be denied and finally bursts out of your chest. The way Keith expresses those emotions through his guitar is something I didn't think was possible for non-classical musicians. I still have trouble listening to that song sometimes because of what it makes me feel.
He doesn't get enough credit from too many people because he's a pretty boy! As a bass player I always saw the same thing with John Taylor. This guy absolutely kicks ass. And his band is total top notch, I especially love this drummer, so kick ass for a country band.
I need more Keith Urban reaction videos. My favorite live moment - by far - was at Mohegan Sun a number of years ago with Jamey Johnson singing "In Color". I was there - I SWEAR he looked me in my eyes - and it was freaking magical.
I saw Keith Urban live in '08 and when he did this song it gave me goose bumps. I got hooked on him in '05 after seeing him in concert on CMT. I went out and bought the DVD of this concert ('Livin' Right Now') a few months later and was blown away by him being such a complete artist. As an artist, I put him in the same classification as Brad Paisley and John Mayer, although Mayer is honestly in a class all his own. If I'm going on a road trip and I can bring music from and 3 artists it's going to be a great drive listening to those three.
I have this reoccurring dream from when I had aspirations of country stardom where I was on an award show doing a massive guitar off with the best players in the genre. I sleep good
I wish Keith Urban’s music was still like this. His older records are fantastic, full of good catchy-pop country songs but great production. He’s had a few good songs in the last decade but overall his last two albums have just been a wreck in my opinion. Ripcord was good, just wish it had a real drummer on it. He’s one of my favourites so I sure hope he leans towards what made him great in the first place.
I'm exactly in the same boat. He's had a handful of good songs since Ripcord but it's not quite the same. He's gone a bit too techno and away from the natural instrument sound which is a shame. Love Pain is easily my favourite album.
I've got to agree. Graffiti U and his latest I think are good but nowhere near the older music. I like his acoustic music the best but the heavier rock guitar is amazing as Keith is a virtuoso guitarist. I'm not, sure what it is I didn't like on Graffiti U but the songs were not as catchy or meaningful as some of the older music. I wish,he'd do an all acoustic record with all the older great songs.
Man, I've watched a decent number of your breakdowns and, to be frank, it's often far over my head. I don't play guitar and don't grasp all the music theory and progression talk. That being said, I was pumped to see you doing this song. I've always loved Keith Urban and this song in particular. That lead solo is much more than just an exhibition of guitar mastery. It serves a very important role in the song. It's very much an additional verse. Throughout the first two verses of the song, the song is speaking to the "Stupid Boy" ("You stupid boy, you always had to be right"). After the bridge, the song becomes the perspective of the "Stupid Boy" ("Oh, I'm the same ole, same ole stupid boy") and he realizes that she's gone. In comes the guitar solo and it comes in very mournful and slow - almost expressing grief. As the solo builds and the playing gets faster, the sound begins to express more begging - almost saying "please, please don't go." That's just my take but I think it's a masterful guitar solo that continues the lyric of the song without using words. I've always thought that Vince Gill did this the best (at least in country music) but Keith Urban is right up there.
@@erikhartley2494 I’ll preface this by saying that a lot of what Keith Urban does so well in Stupid Boy is using his guitar to tell part of the story. Vince Gill does this incredibly well in a lot of his ballads. I’d suggest watching Vince Gill’s live version of “Go Rest High on that Mountain” in his tribute to George Jones. He struggles to even sing the lyrics but gets to the solo and it’s clear that he speaks through his guitar and it completes settles his emotions. Amazing to see. You’re right the band is awesome and I feel like most people under rate his guitar playing, it’s some of the best I’ve ever seen. Subscribing today to your channel.
After watching this concert over & over again. The "Love Pain & the Whole Crazy Thing" world tour was I think arguably some of Keith's finest performances to date. It was his 1st tour after spending 3 month's in rehab. He was clean & the emotion that he shared was outstanding, even shedding tears through performances of different song's. Also this group of muso's he had we're the best I've ever seen him with.
This one makes me cry. Another one that will rip your heart out is when the Tedeschi Trucks Band does Midnight in Harlem (get the live version). You'll be in tears.
They don't get any better than Keith Urban. With that said, I'm so glad you talked about his touring band. Those guys are some of the best Nashville has to offer. It's worth the ticket just to hear them do their thing.
Keith is such a big star, but I remember seeing posters for him around country Victoria when he was starting out back in the 1980s. The common theme was that he played massive numbers of gigs in his formative years.
My favorite videos that you do have been the country/folk/bluegrass genres. The simplicity of the progressions but the intentional layering of elements in those genres gives the music an emotional pull that is unparalleled (blues would fit into that group as well). Keep up the good work! I'd love to hear you react to an old Waylon Jennings tune called "I've always been crazy" or maybe one of the Merle Haggard classics (workin' man blues would be killer)
Saw Keith and this band live twice and every one of them were amazing, tight musicians and singers. It was mind blowing. The band he has now it not quite as good, but I’m so glad I got to experience this in person.
These reacts are so great. Keeping with the country genre you should check out "stay a little longer", by Brothers Osbourne...john osbourne is another monster level player in nashville who throws two killer solos down in that song. keep up the great work!!
Should see the crossroads song Don’t let me down he did with John Mayer. You’d find it on choicenation page on RUclips. It’s a live performance. Awesome. I’m moved to tears and you’ll know when those moments happen in the song.
You've gotta do one with one of several performances John Mayer and Keith Urban have done together. "Sweet Thing" and their cover of "Don't Let Me Down" are my favorites! The chemistry is UNREAL.
Like so many on here I love his older stuff. Wish he still recorded those type songs. He's still one of my favorites and really rocks live. The John Mayer crossroads is great but look up Walking in the country from crossroads with John Fogerty...amazing solo. He's an awesome guitar player and a really nice guy.
I absolutely LOVE Keith Urban's guitar tone in that live video. It's a lot like Eric Johnson's "violin" tone but muted, taking the edge off. And then there's his legato.....
This was the video I showed my guitar buddy who didn’t know about Keith Urban as more than some country guy on the radio. And 13:49 is the same thing he said at the same time!
This is the pinnacle of his backing band. Everyone of them are insane musicians. IN! SANE!

I would pay just to watch him play a guitar for 2 hours. He is amazing and mesmerizing!
*Nobody can finger a guitar quite like KU*
The layers of Epicness is Legendary!!
*This whole song is foreplay*
He plays this filthy doesn't he!!
I really enjoyed your breakdown!
Thank~You! 💞🌸
This song is written by Sarah Buxton, Tom Bukovac’s wife. Buko did the guitar on the album.
I know this video is a couple of years old but it’s one of the best videos I’ve seen and listen too in YEARS!!! Great job, big music, musician, Keith fan.
Sweet thing - John Mayer and Keith Urban
I have been play a long time and am always the student learning from the greats and the up and coming greats !
This one makes me cry. Another one that will rip your heart out is when the Tedeschi Trucks Band does Midnight in Harlem (get the live version). You'll be in tears.
I’m months late on this one Michael…..love the breakdown…you amaze me how quickly you can get at and DO what he is doing….
That’s country Victoria Australia y’all :-)
These were his best days with Chris Q as drummer and MD with Chris Rod on guitar!
Wish everyone felt music as you do
One of my favourite KU songs of all time. Ty
My favorite videos that you do have been the country/folk/bluegrass genres. The simplicity of the progressions but the intentional layering of elements in those genres gives the music an emotional pull that is unparalleled (blues would fit into that group as well). Keep up the good work! I'd love to hear you react to an old Waylon Jennings tune called "I've always been crazy" or maybe one of the Merle Haggard classics (workin' man blues would be killer)
never knew urban was so dope
He makes it look so effortless too!!! Keith is an awesome player!
dude, i love your breakdowns and finally.. keith.. who is an inspiration to me as a guitarist
You do a terrific job and just wanted to say thank you!
Saw him live such amazing experience!
Saw Keith and this band live twice and every one of them were amazing, tight musicians and singers. It was mind blowing. The band he has now it not quite as good, but I’m so glad I got to experience this in person.
"I've got my p90 guitar and a Marshall stack and I don't care what your think"
rock it buddy, rock it, got that pair too
I enjoyed this so much dude.. Your enjoyment translated so well. This song is all time for me.
I would love a dissection of Richard Thompson's "1952 Vincent Black Lightning" A sad English ballad with incredible finger picking
Sean Rowe kills that one as well. And Reckless Kelly at Cains.

Dude wow “video posted 4 years ago” is wild. I remember this one. Well said throughout
Dude... Check out his live version of Raining on Sunday
Beautiful piece - like wow !!
Nicely done. Love the content. Tuesday's ARE GREAT! Thank you. I can't play a lick of guitar. I play trombone. I Love this stuff.
Great video. Urban is awesome with his feel.
Decoration day live in Alabama Jason Isbell
Goddamn Lonely Love off that album is gold too.
I absolutely LOVE Keith Urban's guitar tone in that live video. It's a lot like Eric Johnson's "violin" tone but muted, taking the edge off.
And then there's his legato.....
it's an 'organic' performance..... love this song.
Would love to see you react to some Ariel Posen! He has some great stuff
This!!!

This was the video I showed my guitar buddy who didn’t know about Keith Urban as more than some country guy on the radio. And 13:49 is the same thing he said at the same time!
