Mayer is the Clapton of my generation and I'm happy to have been able to follow him from his early days till date. Can't wait to see what more he has in store for us.
Mayer is crushing both on his own beautiful music ,as well as his incredible live performances with Dead and Company…his extended solos and exploration of the intricacies of the melodies and grooves are simply awe inspiring…I learn something every time I watch and listen to him play.😀🎸🔥thanks for this deep dive into Wild Blue👍
Best song on the album, imho. It really shows his influences of Knopfler, Cale and the Grateful Dead, and yet his own voice shines through in both the writing and performance. Super tasteful all around. Great job again, Michael!
My favorite is probably I Guess I Just Feel Like. Followed by All I Want Is To Be With You. Followed by Til The Right One Comes. All of those have understated but absolutely killer guitar parts. Especially All I Want Is To Be With You.
I think it's more in line with Peter Green but I guess everyone sees something, it's what this whole album was about, to make you feel like somehow you know every song but all songs are new
I never cared for John Mayer back when I was in high school and he emerged on the scene. Songs like "No Such Thing" and "Your Body is a Wonderland" grinded against the rock aesthetic my buddies and I worshipped when we'd sit around and watch the Woodstock documentary over and over. Now, as an adult, I've come to appreciate his diversity and skill as a guitar player and singer/songwriter and his ability to shift from pop icon to jam band rocker. Impressive work on his part. I found it interesting how Rick Beato referred to him as the "last guitar god" or something like that, as he seems to be the last guitar-centered musician that can fill a stadium. I also liked how Mayer handled Mary Spender finishing "Last Train Home" before he'd even released it. Class act, there! Thanks for the content! Amazing stuff as always
I think in addition to everything you said here being spot on, what makes him able to have the success he continues to have to this day is his ability to insert his guitar mastery and as you said jam band guitar prowess into his music almost covertly. His music over time has been able to stay relevant by not relying on guitar driven riffs but by drenching a lot of his work with it discretely. Many of his fans may consider him very much a pop act and not know much about his guitar ability (though no doubt he has a massive guitar fan following to be sure). It’s why many people, myself included, don’t appreciate what he has to offer until they really pay attention or someone else focuses you attention to him.
I certainly wouldn't consider myself a big fan but I definitely respect him as basically the only modern muscian to make guitar centric music that's also extremely popular. I really like lots of his music for my own guitar skills and developing my playing too. For my personal tastes though as a music listener I wish his songs had a bit more edge to them, it's always just so safe and bland and his lyrics are so cheesy and feel impersonal and fake.
John Mayer balance's his melodicness with his guitar chops it makes such catchy songs. Ive been to one of John Mayer's concerts years ago and his sound people are the best, great mix.
I know very little about guitar playing and would always shy away from guitarists going off on long riffs. And then I listened to John . You explain so well about his use of melody throughout a riff. It's what kept me drawn to his music and now I can't wait for those parts, the longer the better. It's mesmerizing.
yeah dude, there are some really great young guys out there, Mayer, Derek Trucks, Joe Bonamassa, Gary clark jr, there are not as much as before but we still have hope
YES I just spent like three days learning the parts for this and was having such a blast ! So refreshing to see this after that exploration, deeper than I ever knew!
I geeked out really hard when I watched this performance the first time right where you did around the 21 minute mark--where he hit that huge slide down on the third string seemingly out of nowhere. Sob Rock is not my favorite album of his, but, seeing you analyze this performance really helps me appreciate the genius of his craft. The dude never stops learning, growing, and challenging himself.
The whole record is so so awesome. So is this Channel. Thats the reason why i watched this video quite a few times. It brings together two things I like - John and Michael 😎🙌🏻
great video. JM is a modern day blues guitar master who is also a mainstream artist, not an easy feat. ive grown more and more to appreciate him and his amazing feel and melodicism. when i was younger i was into more flashy and technical playing, but now i just love it when i hear a dude make the guitar literally sing. and Knopfler and JJ Cale influence all over this one.
Everytime i see your videos i wanna grab my guitar and learn new things from you, thanks and keep up the extremely good work you do, and i love the width of genres you touch, peace from Sweden
Spectacular. Thanks so much. I've been working on C major 3 string triads. I couldn't follow everything, but I was able to follow a lot of it and will return to work on what I missed to learn more. What made this exceptional for me was its "simplicity" and tempo. Because Mayer and you focused on the segments and connections, it felt like you unlocked a lot of the fretboard for me. I'm struck by how great musicians make great music out of basic building blocks. And how learning a relatively simple song can reveal that architecture even to someone at my level, when someone at your level explains what is happening. Lots of great art is simple, once the artist puts it together for us. Thanks again. An aha moment.
The song sounds very Mark Knopflerish to me. I think he is really one of the great players ever. Even his early pop stuff if you listen to the guitar parts they are intricate and melodic.
Michael! Great stuff! I never finish your videos, not because they’re not excellent and entertaining but because I just HAVE to play guitar and work through and try out things you say before it ends! Immaculate sir 👌🏻🤘🏻
Dude!! Love this station! Also love that your reviewing John! I can truly tell that he has been heavily influence by the dead and company it really is coming out in this song with a little dab of jerry hooks but completely his own style!! Love it! Love it!!
I have joined as lifetime member of your platform. I have not actually been there since doing it, I just felt that I wanted to thank you for all these great videos I have been watching on RUclips...
I love the "nerdy" stuff! Keep it coming please for us beginner theorists. I like how you talk about the different hats the chord progression can wear. (Like how you said the progression resolved on C but we weren't feeling it like a resolve until the F)
You'r so good! You do what I tell every one and they do not understand what i'm talking about... So well explain, again thank you, thank you, thank you.
What a great video Michael. The way you explain all the intricate details in music is inspiring. I started using Guitar Gate about a month ago and have been loving it. Thank you!
Dude your sound is amazing. Im listening through my phone connected to my car and its blowing me away each time you play a riff👌👍😲. Im currently a guitarist in training and i cant get enough of john mayers style. But i think that while ever ive got a hole in my arse ill never be able to play 1/2 his style 🤣🤣 good work 👌
Let us all thank Leo Fender for his huge contribution to the sound we all love, a sweet single-coil pickup tone, played by a Master. Thank You Michael, for all you do.
. Dulcet tones =pleasant to the ear; melodious: the dulcet tones of the cello. pleasant or agreeable to the eye or the feelings; soothing. Archaic. sweet to the taste or smell. Good word. I have never seen a song get covered so fast, and so well covered.
You are clearly a great guitar teacher and a great player. You pick up so much of this so quickly it is astounding. That said, for some reason, I feel compelled to comment that you have a tendency to initially interplay passing notes in a line as major rather than minor. I don’t know nearly enough to say yes it’s a major note in that particular scale, or if it just seems to function as one in terms of the passing note. It kind of drove me nuts. Which is ridiculous on my part. I don’t know nearly what you know, I just heard it. Def like the video, the song, and how you teach. I wasn’t able to take in nearly as much as you laid out, but did understand and learn some.
Knopfler influence all over this song (including finger playing). I wasn't much of a Mayer "fan" until I saw his set at The Crossroad Guitar 2007 in Chicago (on video) and he sure changed my opinion. Also around that time Continuum came out and what an album. Also the John Mayer Trio - just a great straight ahead power blues/rock ensemble.
I've been out of the music game (gigging) for a couple years now. Getting back to jamming with some friends soon but my theory has dulled quite a bit. Highly considering taking your course over this coming winter when I have more free time. Love that strat. Love the channel. Keep 'em coming. Thank you for your contributions to music.
Never been a big mayer fan, but TRIO and dead and co are great. Gave this new record a listen and though I dont love it, this track and the singles are pretty good.
If you havent done "gravity" by John Mayer, Live from LA.... I would love you to see your reaction to his nut bends... it blew my mind. I had never seen anyone do that before
PLEASE!!!! John Mayers - Like a Rolling Stone (cover) on the Howard Stern birthday bash! Been a subscriber for a couple years now! Love your work! All the way from Australia 🇦🇺
I wish you would have been familiar with the original so you could have reacted to the changes John brought to this live. And let some of the solos play through a bit more so they can be heard and enjoyed more in context. Your brain likely holds it all together better than mine ;) Anyway really amazed at your ability to pick the song apart and share the underlying theory and musicianship underlying this incredible performance.
Yeah I hear a few seconds of a Knopfler-esque run. I'm a big fan, and it's great....but this song sounds to me like I popped a JJ Cale album in. Absolutely love it.
Lmao dude, I'm loving watching you make the same exact faces that I make watching him play usually followed by a (FU JOHN). You are great, even though I barely comprehended half of what you were trying to teach, I thoroughly enjoyed every minute, ty.

Big nod to Mark Knopfler by John. Stellar playing as usual.
Came to the comments to say this. Big time Knopfler vibes
Totally got that as well
True
I thought of JJ Cale

There is nothing like seeing John Mayer in person. ❤🎶

Michael: we aren’t gonna go note-by-note

Crowded House, Chris Isaak, there's so much going on!
Gerry Rafferty - Right Down the Line
It sounds like a song written by Christine McVie, with JJ Cale on vocal, and Mark Knopfler on guitar.
John is truly a brilliant guitarist.

"Knopflerish" might just be my favorite new adjective
Agree! Even if Your Body is a Wonderland has a very poppy cheesy lyrics, the guitar parts and progression are super interesting! Especially the bridge
knopflerish is a serious understatement... it's a total ripoff of MK's style
Yes! Two things about this video - Mayer is the GOAT, and Palmisano almost dead replicated the run on the first time through. Killer!
Totally agree, first thing that came to my mind as well, Dire Straits. Alot of people don't feel the magic and appreciate the skills. I do!

Music theory made me an asset to any band and blew up my songwriting. This channel tied the theory to songs. Truly grateful for that.

Honestly, John Mayer sounds this good live. When a guy understands music they know how to set up the rig
first time played "live" looking forward to it being played live on his next solo tour. Headphone boy has been killing it lately on D&C tour!!!!
Anyone else getting a super strong Mark Knopfler vibe from this song?
He said that's what he was going for in his recent interview about the album. He nailed it while being tasteful.
That solo was very Knopfler

Hear a lot of Rumours by Fleetwood Mac (Dreams, Rhiannon) in this song - very similar sort of use of the #4 over the IV chord in both songs.
In an alternate universe where Mark Knopfler did a guest appearance on Fleetwood Mac's Tango in the Night album, you'd have Wild Blue.
