Just mind-expanding & satisfying to begin to really understand how it all works together. Almost like walking through a jungle thinking you'd never see the light of day & finally stepping into an open field of sunshine. Ahhhhh - makes it all worthwhile. What a great explanation by JM. Next thing is to work on the muscle memory to be able to use it well. Most peoples fingers don't naturally work together like that. (thats where the real work comes in).

One way I sometimes think about it, when outside the VIII position Cm pentatonic, is looking at the other side of the coin: Eb major pentatonic in V position. I always struggle having the root note on the little finger and this has helped me a lot on visualizing the fretboard. My guitar teacher, a great one at that, always tells me and his other students to study the different scale shapes both in minor and major, for any given position (e.g. ascending major, descending minor etc).

    Dominant 7
    1/2 diminished 7
    Diminished 7
    A7 - ami7 - A7 - ami7b5 - adim7
Then learn your chord progressions in a major song which you’ve already all done… And then do it in a minor key.… You’ll discover that the II chord is always a half diminished seventh chord preceding the V chord.

In the key of C, the II and V chords are
      Dmin7 and G7.
      d - f - a - c. ....
      g - b - d - f
Please always use Roman numerals to describe music chords. It is well established and understood in jazz and rock and even country. Of course there are variations in how to spell major and minor chords, by using capital, or lower case letters for minor and diminished chord spellings.
So in a major key the II, III, and IV chords are always minor seven chords with or without the seventh.
Minor keys are a little bit more mysterious because of the half diminished II chord...
The VII chord in a C Major key is half diminished chord, like bmi7-5.
Practice this sound in different keys, is excellent ear training.
I hope this helps answer your question, and thanks.
PS Improvising Jazz, by Jerry Coker, is a compact bible of jazz voicing and progressions that is a priceless reference that and jazz instrumentalists are aware of since 1964. In 110 pages ... worth more than a 2 year music degree. IMHO
My father as a student at Yale music school was teaching Paul Hindemith counterpoint and Harmony classes. He graduated in three years with a piano masters. I was turning pages for him when I was eight years old in 1963 and have been playing Oboe since 1965, and Guitar since 1975. My dad had thousands of song books. Fake books. Most of those fake books were just the chords and the melody. That’s all we need to get started, once learning how to spell the chords before us :-).

It all about the underlying chord i.e if you play under a dom7 chord, you can use both minor or major together because it has a major 3rd and and minor 7 in the chord. if you combine both these scale under say A7 only notes that technically don't fit is Bb G# and F.

I'm not sure why this way of looking at the fretboard never clicked with me before, but since this video I have found it indispensable.
