I wish there was a major school of guitar instruction that didn’t involve playing across all six strings in these visualizations at all but I think it’s our society where people want quick results and they want a system and when you do that people thinking gets very rigid and they’re stuck in the system. I’m actually glad I learned how to play guitar guitar before the Internet! All we had was cassette tapes and frustration! But you couldn’t just get tabs for everything

Dynamics brother! That's what gives music a bit of soul! Put some life into it like you said, talk through your strings. I will master this some day. I've been "playing" for many years but only started learning how to really play about a year ago. Never learned any scales or theory until recently. I wish I had taken lessons as a young man. I'd be so much further along.
You're so into what you're teaching you could be talking about holding a pick and it would inspire people to play. I had an English teacher who loved the books he assigned us so much it got to me and I actually read the books through and loved them. That's the person you remind me of most, keep up the good work!
I like the way the HC style slide caught me off guard at 10:19 to then hit again at 10:31 and start to bring everything back home. The lesson was awesome, but the demonstration shouldn't be underestimated here, great fun solo.
That practicing vs performer's mindset with the food was the best piece of wisdom I've heard in a while. Don't overthink, just let the music flow! Thank you, Tomo!

Guitar wisdom indeed. You are a treasure. I want to take a moment to acknowledge that you are very encouraging. You don't shy away from saying this just needs to be learned. "It's not your fault, it's just your turn" to learn. I appreciated that
Thanks so much! I am glad to hear that you understand what I am trying to reach, teach, help others. Guitar is very difficult instrument if you want to play really well. It's not only about learning but fixing the problems is far important!
You are obviously an intelligent man, in addition to a great guitarist. This lesson is worth more than many jazz lessons I've taken, as it is directly applicable. If I had a gig later today, I could very easily use what you just taught me. Thank you for this awesome lesson, that teaches more in10 minutes that most hour long lessons. Also, that Strat is beautiful. Something about a red Strat is always cool!
This is such an incredible lesson. I think the thing that helps like with that you said is, to distract yourself which can go hand in hand with not overthinking/overplaying.
This is a real guitar teacher. Rather than launching into an amazing solo in order to show off and intimidate his audience, Tomo puts himself in the students shoes and shows it like it is in real life when you practice. I've learned more in 5 minutes here than in the previous 100 hours from other so called teachers. And not only is this a valuable lesson, Tomo actually goes through all the chords of the piece. I hate it when a lesson shows you what to do with one or two chords and then leaves you hanging. Thanks Tomo 😊👍

You know a person is very good at guitar when he doesn't need reverb to make things interesting. Most of the time Tomo plays straight to the amp and produces his sounds from his technique and his dynamics and not effects! He also givess great advice because he is a teacher and sees this on a daily basis. That is why I respect this man alot!

Your guitar wisdom course is ridiculously awesome. I’m about a month and a half in and I can see a difference already. I brag about it all the time and try to get others to consider it. It’s a lot of information so it can be extremely overwhelming but your little comments along the way helps out tremendously. Money well spent and it is super affordable. Thanks bro you are my favorite teacher of all time. 😎🎸🔥
What you played at 2:28 is the way I have soloed for almost 15 years and this video really hammered that home for me. I've gotten super awesome at doing that, but I find my own guitar playing to be boring after doing that for so long. Great video man, this really helped me view my own playing in a new perspective.

Tomo your triads lessons really helped me. I signed up last month and I’m trying your idea of using more dynamics and syncopated rhythm in improvising. Thanks
There are nuggets of gold in every one of your videos, you have to watch them all and discover! I began with triads the first day of subscribing to Guitar Wisdom and thought I would spend a few days on them and move on... Over four weeks later, I feel like I am only just starting with them. Thanks for such inspiration Tomo, with your help this lockdown has been turned into a huge positive for me. When the restaurant reopens and I’m back in the kitchen most of the time I will look back on this as a guitar golden age!
I love these videos where you do extended soloing over a simple progression. I learn so much from your phrasing and your rhythmic variations. I'm starting to get a bit more able to use these things in my own playing. Thank you for your online content!!!!

I always try to play a 'sound' . It can be 2 notes or 6 notes, because 1 note more or less gives you another sound quality. It actually comes down on playing what you feel and that could be in an academic way. I think that the notes that you play or composition you make are choices that are influenced by how you feel in a particular moment because when you improvise you 'are' mostly in the moment
This is something I know as a sax player, turned guitarist. I guess every instrument has its own hang ups. To me it’s about slowing down. You don’t need to impress the audience. You need to entertain them. Entertainment is your industry and job, not impressing other musicians with your mad skills. You totally nailed how a horn player thinks, and the fact that on guitar or piano or other rhythm instrument, it’s not necessary to constantly calculate in your head. So you are not saying watching RUclips, drinking whiskey, and playing guitar at the same time is a bad thing. Because I am totally doing that right now. I’m basically film scoring the news with the Blues.
What i like about this channel is that, you give us free lessons that are very useful and helpful for us beginner - intermediate guitarist to become professional guitarist!

Tomo, I have seen this video one year ago and again today and it makes more sense now. I used to stress out about playing the chord changes thinking I had to know every triad and map it out to play it. While this isn't untrue, it's also not the complete answer. Now when I am put on the spot I play the chord changes by 'changing directions' melodically with each chord change. Even if it's not the exact triad, if I play just *one* note from the triad/ chord and work around there with other notes it goes smoothly. Thank you for this!
Tomo-san, I love watching these videos and am both happy and sad to have found you so late. On the one hand I have A LOT of material I can start going through, on the other, I feel like I needed all of this 2 years ago! Thank you for sharing your knowledge.

Great lesson. Sometimes I get tired of my own playing style. Because I learned by myself and I've never made such an effort to understand what I was actually doing, as a result, creating this limitation wall that prevents me from expanding my musical abilities. Although I believe that listening is one of the most important aspect of learning/studying an instrument, and because knowledge is different than understanding, the theory is the key that might open doors to the other side, thus expanding musically. Thanks again for this great lesson.

Ive been playing for about 2 years and compared to what I know aside from chords and the pentatonic scale, I might as well be a beginner (I'd say finger movement is decent when I get muscle memory for harder licks). I just stumbled on this video while looking for improv tips for blues... I'll definitely be able to use the concepts! I just don't understand where I should be starting or working on regarding improv or blues...
On that last tip, is he trying to say you can “play what you hear/feel” without developing relative pitch? I’m not sure what he was demonstrating by saying learn the triads
what about the Major modes? How can we imply these into our playing without sounding like a robot or keep repeating ourselves? We need a video about theseee senseeeiiiiii

Sebastian Sprotte disagree. mixing up you’re targets is essential but the 3rd is by far the most interesting of notes to target because of the play between major and minor over blues progressions.
I find it weird when I hear people say this. Coming from a classical piano background: that’s the first study. And then the modes. In the key of C Major: C to C, then D to D, E to E, etc. The amount of songs and riffs that you already know in Major should give you a clue.

That hard rattley picking 😂 funny af
You're so into what you're teaching you could be talking about holding a pick and it would inspire people to play. I had an English teacher who loved the books he assigned us so much it got to me and I actually read the books through and loved them. That's the person you remind me of most, keep up the good work!
So nice to hear that. It's all same! We have a lot of passion on something! I love GUITAR so much! Everyday is so special!!
I like the way the HC style slide caught me off guard at 10:19 to then hit again at 10:31 and start to bring everything back home. The lesson was awesome, but the demonstration shouldn't be underestimated here, great fun solo.
Thank you@
Same! Those notes were spot on
I think 10:44 was the beginning of the stairway to heaven solo as well
That practicing vs performer's mindset with the food was the best piece of wisdom I've heard in a while.

So great to hear that! You're welcome! Thank you!
even someone whos deep into guitar can benefit from this talk
Thanks so much!!
No, I need Guthrie even more at a time like this.
This is such an incredible lesson. I think the thing that helps like with that you said is, to distract yourself which can go hand in hand with not overthinking/overplaying.
Thank you!

Worth to skip it
You know a person is very good at guitar when he doesn't need reverb to make things interesting. Most of the time Tomo plays straight to the amp and produces his sounds from his technique and his dynamics and not effects! He also givess great advice because he is a teacher and sees this on a daily basis. That is why I respect this man alot!
Thanks so much! I love old records... blues or jazz... recored before 1963... NO REVERB AMP! So I just wanted to imitate them.

So great to hear that. Thank for your feedback. Good job!
What you played at 2:28 is the way I have soloed for almost 15 years and this video really hammered that home for me. I've gotten super awesome at doing that, but I find my own guitar playing to be boring after doing that for so long. Great video man, this really helped me view my own playing in a new perspective.

Thank you!
You're the man!! Thank you for being so helpful!! Peace and blessings to you always.
Thank you!

Tomo,
I have seen this video one year ago and again today and it makes more sense now.
Thank you so much! Most people think "Practice Stage" and "Performance Stage" Same process! That's impossible to achieve it!
Tomo-san, I love watching these videos and am both happy and sad to have found you so late. On the one hand I have A LOT of material I can start going through, on the other, I feel like I needed all of this 2 years ago! Thank you for sharing your knowledge.

I’m just getting to the triads now in my journey. Thank you for the lesson, you have helped me to understand where I need to put my attention.
You're very welcome! Triads are so good!
I know some scales, but never really found my “voice” on the guitar. I can play stuff… but I can’t make her sing. Breaks my heart 🥲
You can do it!
You just need to learn proper ways.
From what i learned from fujita, just play from the heart, what you hear and feel make it play.
I've been Looking at 4, 5, and 6 note Arpeggios to Identify the Chords that exist within the Arpeggios and I've been practicing using those big extended chords as Pentatonic and Hexatonic scales 🎸🎶⚖
I've been experimenting with using the pure Triads that exist in the extended chords and playing those Triads as Arpeggios over the extended chords and vice versa
Your tips are very helpful 🙂

we are all good. most of this vid is basic diatonic chord theory....which isnt basic for most..including me..
lmao.
and why not ;)
Great lesson.

Don't target thirds ;)
