I’ve been playing guitar for over 30 yrs. Became a Dave fan in the late 90’s, about 5 yrs or so after I started paying. I was hooked. I can play most of his songs. I love the unique chords and progressions and over the years I still love to pick up my acoustic and play some Dave songs. Real music that evokes emotion. Love his shows. Seen him over 40 times. Really cool you’re doing this video. Appreciate you.
Dave plays guitar like a drummer, that's what makes him so unique. There's few strumming hands out there with such a fantastic rhythm to them. You want proof? Imagine playing with Carter Beauford as your drummer...best be sure you need to step up
SRV, Elliott Smith and now Dave/Tim?! You’re on fire! Man, Dave is one of my all time favourite players! Great riffs and his timing is impeccable. Some of his stuff is so challenging to play; let alone sing and play. He doesn’t get enough credit from guitar players.
I’ve been hopelessly addicted to playing and knowing every one of Dave’s tunes since 1996. Very much to my guitar-playing detriment I might add, as far as the basic, rudimentary lead guitar basics are concerned. I like to sneak in and sit in the back of the “class” on channels like these every so often, desperate to one day shake this addiction. I bought my first electric guitar a couple years ago - that’s progress! lol. But it was a pleasure to see someone like you, with an encyclopedic knowledge of the fretboard, breakdown one of Dave’s top 5 staple tunes. Thank you!
Dave definitely doesn't get enough credit in guitar circles. I'm always recommending some of his songs to *newer* guitarists learning finger independence, like this one, So Much to Say, Lie in Our Graves, Two Step. He's also a great into to alternate chord shapes/voicings.
Really had fun following your breaking down this performance. I love Dave Matthews and DMB. Dave and Tim are always epic. I've been playing a little over 25 years, and Dave is definitely a major influence on my playing and my taste in music. Anyway, I’ve been following your channel for a year or 2 and really enjoy what you do. Thanks!
my fav Dave Matthews Band song.... I love the version they performed at the Central Park concert most. and his south african side comes out when he sings.
Dave and Tim are some of the best live guitar performers in modern times. They complement each other so well, and they're nearly flawless. The way Dave adds the percussive rhythm to his playing when he's solo is really impressive.
Dave’s uniqueness is rooted in the talent he displays singing a melody over a crazy time guitar rhythm that has little to do with the melody. It isn’t easy to do!
Always enjoy so much about Dave Matthews, whether he’s with a full band, with Tim Reynolds, with someone else, on his own…okay, I guess I really love his stuff!😊 And another superb lesson from Michael. Thank you!
I'm surprised you've not heard this one Mike. If you really want a stretch - do "The Stone". Same idea, just friggin brilliant orchestration. Great breakdown videos, keep it up please
Absolutely excellent breakdown of two o the best accoustic grungeing artist alive!!! Punching fire in the creation of deep feeling music....of which Dave is so horribly overlooked for. Anytime you get these guys together....they are harboring a raging wildfire of accoustic playing. Thank you once again for your professional analysis good brother : you are always very much appreciated here. Be well - stay well , ron
Great to see the Live at Luther College version of Warehouse, always the best version! Tim is the best accompanist there is! Nobody fills in like him, he makes Dave sound like a full orchestra, its an insane sound they create. Only Dave can go from Middle Eastern sounds to Pop and then end with a Salsa groove haha, unreal.
I watched a video of some comedian cracking on Dave Matthews fans and their (our) cargo shorts and flip flops the other day. Thanks for reminding me he's still a badass.
I dig the Live At Central Park version of this song. You really get to see how great of a BAND they are. That group of musicians playing together are probably tighter than any other band I’ve ever heard.
Yeah the stretches & odd changes, man. I remember starting to learn some Dave songs when I was a kid and deciding it was impossible. 20 yrs later it’s still tough sometimes.
Love this! I played bass in a touring DMB Tribute band for several years, and Warehouse was always a favorite for the audience and tons of fun for the band to play. Dave's songwriting and guitar playing are so underrated, especially on songs like Warehouse that sound relatively "easy" on the surface.
great watch. just as an FYI warehouse is maybe the biggest fan favorite song dmb has (their fan club is called the warehouse). hearing it dave and tim is actually kind of rare, the full band performances are more well known, especially with the stop time intro and salsa outro. worth watching the central park version if you get the chance. this song is massive! would love to see the stone reviewed at some point! - theres a great solo version from charlie rose show!
James here. First time to the channel. I’ve been “trying” to learn guitar for over 20 years. Time is my biggest enemy! If I somehow find a bunch of time, I will look you up. Really enjoyed the video and your vibe!
24:45… this is also something he messes with lyrically a lot. A Dave song that musically sounds fun and upbeat and happy will often have dark lyrics and a song that musically sounds down and dark will often have hopeful, happy, upbeat lyrics
In a Stern interview, Dave said he came up with riffs like that by trying to copy the big stretches he saw Robert Fripp doing in King Crimson. He said he never could figure out what Fripp was doing but he liked the sounds he was finding while he tried.
It's funny, I went to UNC-CH in the early 90s, and DMB used to play fraternity parties on campus at the time, since they were based in Charlottesville, VA. We used to pass around a cassette tape of all the songs from Remember Two Things before it was actually released. It was a phenomenon on campus. I met and hung out with some of them a few times in that period. Of course, over the next year they blew up and we no longer a regional, east coast band, and I haven't really listened to them in 25-30 years now, but it's cool to relive those moments through this video. Oddly enough, I just realized I had never actually seen Tim Reynolds until today, even though I could play all these songs on the guitar decades ago.
Dave and Tim are by far one of my all time favourites, you gotta react to "Betrayal" by Tim Reynolds, it's just him and the acoustic, very powerfull song!
I would love to see your take on Warren Haynes with Dave Matthews Band on Cortez the Killer . Warren is one of the best guitar players ever and the band just kills it on this version .. Buddy Strong on the keys ... Carter Beauford on the drums .. Stefan on the bass .. it's really epic. ruclips.net/video/lYrD2SthaMU/видео.htmlsi=uwPTak1puWQ_Bopv
The setlist websites refer to that entire instrumental/vocal scat as the "Passion intro." Stemming from the chord progressions and vocals Peter Gabriel's - Passion
Great breakdown! Speaking of acoustic badasses, I feel like Travis Meeks from Days Of The New deserves more study. He made his first album at 17 and evolved in every way over three albums.
Have you ever done All Along the Watchtower by Michael Hedges. Daves version is a direct reimagining of it. I'd love to see you compare the two somehow.
Hi Michael, in your first pause to breakdown the sound, you mentioned a major chord. Silly question, what's missing that keeps the chord from sounding "bright", like I'm accustomed to a major chord sounding?
Ahhh! I'm trying to get ready, but I "can't help myself." I love your Take on Dave and your alysis of the musical structure, we're home is, etc., But to be able to correctly interpret it, you need to first listen to the recorded version. First because, although Dave did play guitar on that album, what you're hearing is Tim and second because it really lays out the song structure stop playing the riff in single string 16th notes, Jaco style. Well, kind of but not really. For his entire career, Dave has pretty much worked year-round every year. He tours with Dave Matthews Band, then tours with Tim and not so much anymore, but he used to also tour solo. This song has evolved and been through so many subtle changes over decades, just like every other song they play, so what both of them are playing- especially Tim, changes every night and will sometimes completely change from tour to tour. This isn't very articulate because I'm trying to rush it but, I've heard Dave speak about his guitar playing too many times for my own good and the way he plays is based off South African influences in wanting to have a rhythmic presence even more so than one does when playing an acoustic guitar. To achieve that he rarely plays more than three notes at a time and mutes the rest to get that percussive sound. A lot of the time this is also accompanied by an open string that rings out through the changes. This is what formed the way he plays his chords and everything else. He is all about rhythm and might actually be the only person that solos worse than I do. You're on the Tim solo right now and he is more than improvising, he plays a completely different guitar solo every night on the same song. Sometimes it's a hit and sometimes it's a mess but when it hits its something that I can't comprehend I'm coming across like a know-it-all trying to type this out like a maniac so I'll try to come back and say something less nonsensical and more concise another time. Dave is WAY underrated as a guitar player. His timing is different than most. Crazy Talent!
I love the shape of his chords
And there it is… our daily use of the word “UNDERRATED” 😒

Absolutely. Anyone of his songs I have learned have murdered my hand. He makes it look so effortless but they are far from easy

Nobody ever says Dave is a great guitar player.
And he most definitely is.
Please fall down the Dave rabbit-hole on this channel. Tons of crazy unique fingerings and time signatures in his music.

Dave Matthews on Charlie Rose 1999 would be suhweet
The live at Luther version is the ultimate for any Dave and Tim
My favorite Dave album! So good with Tim. ❤
THIS ^^^^ Tim Reynolds is ridiculous
Luther is my FAVE!!!😍
Stream on Live at Luther is just incredible
My top album of all time. I have a RSD edition vinyl that I haven't brought myself to unwrap.
Dave’s playing that riff while full strumming and muting all other strings for that unique sound is so good. Something I will forever chase.
