I was there for this. Right before playing this song, John played "Whiskey, whiskey, whiskey" and casually stated "This is for you, Ed." We had no idea that he was referring to ED FREAKING SHEERAN who was about to come up on stage to play a couple songs. What a delightful surprise!
One of the best nights of my life💚 the day before i saw Sheeran’s live and the next day John’s live with Ed. Funny thing: after the solo the band went back the pre chorus, luckly Ed Sheeran kept going without dropping the vibe🎼☺️
That was April 10, 2019 in Budokan. We had big snow in Tokyo but totally worth the trip because the 3-hour-show was just amazing. We were so lucky to see Ed Sheehan who was staying in Tokyo for his own live in the same week.
I play music full-time for a living as a solo LoopingArtist, I never wanted to do any of Ed’s songs because they’re always so simple, 3 chord songs, etc. But sitting here, stoned, watching this, feeling the groove, I’m definitely surprised how good this song is. Or maybe it’s because it’s John and his band backing Ed up. Either way, this is probably the best guitar solo I’ve ever heard John play! Jesus, this is pretty amazing.

John Mayer and Ed is literally my 2 biggest artistic loves in music history, this just kinda goes to show that sometimes greatness don't melt well together. I bet in a studio or more quiet setting they would guaranteed make magic.
Sheeran sounds amazing. John's voice is amazing as well for his style (naturally) but harmonizing is a different beast and not every great singer's voice will always blend well with another. I think that's all we're seeing (or hearing here). I think John knows it too by the looks of it. It's all good. Just live music baby!
Ed is perfectly on pitch. So is John, just that the natural contrasts in their tones meant that without better prep, John wasn’t able to harmonise well with Ed. I think if they’d traded verses instead of trying to harmonise, it’d be clearer, but there we go. What a solo from John though, and Ed delivered a pretty much studio-perfect vocal.
