The Cat in the Hat Ride: Universal's Fall From Grace
HTML-код
- Опубликовано: 3 окт 2024
- Universal Studios Orlando has allowed the Cat in the Hat ride to worsen in quality for too long now. Back when the Cat in the Hat Universal Studios Orlando opened in 1999 as the anchor ride for the premier Dr Seuss theme park, it was met with a good reception and was well-liked by Universal Orlando Resort guests. However over time, Universal Studios Florida has neglected the Universal Studios Orlando Cat in the Hat ride allowing it to deteriorate year after year. With the original manufacturer out of business, it is hard to see how the Universal Studios Cat in the Hat ride can be saved in its current form. Universal Studios Orlando's best option is to take the Cat in the Hat ride and start from scratch with a completely new and improved attraction.

@@milkcan6141 But did it spin intensely? Like, the teacups at Disney world. It still turns your vehicle, but we're taking about intense spinning.
Yeah when I was a kiddo I wanted to go on this nonstop! I had no clue why it was so lame when I got back onto it in 2019.
They should just remove this attraction and replace it with an upgraded version of it, of retheme it to the grinch or Lorax
Can't believe they have no Lorax themed ride. They're starting to get lazy or don't know how to implement an obvious idea...
it couldn't be themed around the grinch because that would make it only open seasonally
@@kevinclaw5536 Nawh they could have a cute little year round grinch thing. Who doesn’t want a mini Christmas in Whoville at any time
@@Vivicci.x honestly that might actually be cool
@@largol33t1 When I went to universal studio's they had a Lorax statue, that showed the chopped trees. But If there going to replace the cat in the hat rid, they should replace it with the Lorax. It's even more relevant now. They could show the book, but they could also show how it is a problem now with deforestation. Then maybe others would maybe realize the world needs help now.
Honestly the open studio ceiling above makes the whole ride feel really surreal like you’re on some weird tv show or prank show lol
A lot of dark rides suffer from being roofless, especially all the dark rides in Dubai. The roof should be used as an extra "dimension". Maybe don't place any animatronics on it but at least paint it or something. Or make it less high up.
@@mjl11 *cough* motiongate *cough*

@@Megsducks I'm all about problem solving!
This comment has really made me laugh 😂
The ride is far more terrifying high.
It is a shame how Universal just allows their attractions to wear out instead of updating them or making sure the upkeep is dedicated.
Maximus Prime which is odd because at the same time people criticize Disney for updating their rides to often
Then people complain about Disney always updating rides like at least they maintain
The manufacturer of the ride went out of business so no new parts can be reinstalled to fix the ride. Men in black will eventually have the same problem because it’s manufactured by the same company that made cat in the hat
Universal has to go through the family and get permission for alot of things so it's not easy in the land to do things
Disney dose not maintain Journey into imagination with figment
I'm happy to see a video on this topic. I used to ride Cat in the Hat all the time as a kid and didn't even know the spinning was removed until this video. It's a real shame Universal just let's certain rides rot away like this... I would say letting ET go without ANY major updates to animatronics or the sound system is just disrespectful. Obviously with how the world is right now I doubt we'd be getting any of these desperately needed updates for these beloved attractions for quite awhile. Very great video!
Well with the ET ride, it's supposedly not updated because Spielberg himself likes the ride the way that it is.
@@killernyancat8193 That doesn't mean they can't refurbish it.
How ‘bout that Yeti, eh? Or Carousel of Progress? And the old Universe of Energy that rarely got any upkeep? Or even that Antarctic penquin dark ride at Sea World that doesn’t work so they just stopped letting people on the ride? Cat in the Hat doesn’t seem so bad now, especially in this video.
I enjoy this ride ironically and unironically, but it really needs to be redone, or refurbished.
This ride is the best horror attraction in Universal
i didn't think of it as horror, but your not wrong
Yes! My 2 year old was pretty freaked out by Thing 1 and Thing 2.
Better then Halloween horror nights 10/ thing 1 and 2
No childhood, sad.
“This is like a ride at an amusement park!”
“You mean like at... Universal Studios?! Hahahahahaha!!!! Cha-Ching!”
I actually ride this ride as a horror attraction, now. The animatronics are creepy and the ride has a child-like creepy vibe to it. Last time there was a Pepsi cup on the ride floor…and that elevated the vibe entirely.
it is a horror ride now
I always thought it was rumored that the reason it stopped spinning was to be more accessible to the family. This is a family ride. While I never thought the spinning was very intense, even when I was little. I know a personal account of a family having their day disrupted by a member of their party getting motion sickness because of the attraction.
I had heard it was because a parent allowed their child to stand up and the child fell out during the spinning and got badly hurt.
@@tigressangel Then why did universal make the spinning go away, Its clear that the parent is a idiot if they think standing up in a moving ride is safe, clearly not universals fault.
The spinning WAS intense. I remember first riding it and thought it was broken because surely it shouldn’t be tossing guests from side to side like that. They charged it several years ago. Still spins slowly but not abruptly.
Honestly I don’t think there is much they can do besides gut it. It’s not an e ticket ride anymore in comparison to the other attractions at IOA. The cost of refurbishing a ride that nobody really cares about anymore wouldn’t drive up sales. Especially considering the cost when the manufacturer is now out of business. Prob best to gut it and make a new cat in the hat ride or do a grinch ride
i dunno maybe lorax or horton
@@marleywenzel3207 Ruins the message of the book, making a lorax ride is like advertising a gas powered car for a movie about saving the planet.

This ride still gives me nightmares to this day
Also the last time I went on it there were a group in the cart behind us and when we got off and their cart arrived they were gone
I think the ride is haunted
Another reason to get rid of this ride!
@@AttractionIdeas It should be rebuilt from scratch with a new ride manufacturer much like the Men in Black Alien Attack ride but with the same ride manufacturer providing the new ride vehicles!
They load two cars at once lol
I knew the last time I went and rode this something wasn’t right. I remember riding it long ago as a kid, and the spinning was CRAZY. But this recent time I was like “huh. This isn’t as intense as I remember.” Either I was a wussy kid, or the ride is broken. Turns out, the ride is busted. XD
This ride sucks...
But when I went, I was grateful for the air conditioning.
This. The AC in this attraction is top tier
Thats this ride in a nutshell
So it blows actually
The AC is a ride by itself. It's called the Suess AC. and it gets 190 minute wait times.
That's what I love most about it it's literally a walk-on ride where you get to relax, sit down and get air conditioning
Universal will probably be like : yes I see there's many complaints and outcry to fix rides that are near and dear to our fans like e.t and cat in the hat and that is why we will be opening A NEW HARRY POTTER ride within the next 3 years 😊🤟🏼💖

Because that would ruin the message of the book, though that didn’t stop Disney making Avatar land or Universal whoring out The Lorax to advertise cars and laptops and IHOP.

@@killernyancat8193 I never look😂 I just walk fr. Yk when people refuse to read instructions? that’s me.
One wrinkle that hasn't been mentioned. In addition to the ride maker going out of business, any changes to Seuss Landing have to be approved by Mrs Geisel (Dr. Seuss's widow.) Anything Universal wants to do (other than basic repair) has to be approved by her (or her estate, if she's passed on since the agreement for rights was signed.)
That's a great point that I didn't even think of. Though assuming they still keep the ride in the original Dr Seuss style, I don't think she'll have any objections.
So is there a time frame on the deal that they have to have Seuss’ products there for so long? Surely it can’t be forever?
When I worked at Forbidden Journey it took TWO YEARS to finally get a sign for the Express line entrance approved through Universal, then JK Rowling, then Warner Brothers.
I’m 18 at the moment and I grew up riding this ride for my whole life and even with the issues in mind I still drag whoever I’m with to it when I’m almost always the only one who wants to ride it I just love it so much because it’s one of the few dark rides that Universal has in its simulator hellhole
Still better than The Superstar Limo ride at Disney's California Adventure
I want to know how a dark ride looks like it has sun damage. How tf did you do that Universal??
Negalgence that's how! :)
Bro I made my friends wait in line for this ride last time we went because I remembered it being fun and weird when I was younger, like Universal's version of Winnie the Pooh. The sheer embarrassment I felt by the end of it was legitimately overwhelming. I thought I was just crazy and blinded by nostalgia, but it turns out I was right all along!
Vindicated!
How long did you wait? I've never seen this have a line of over 15 minutes due to it's new reputation.
@@yoplait3256 it was years and years ago at this point so I don’t really remember, but I’m pretty sure it wasn’t any longer than a few minutes
The spinning has always been a weird thing. I remember you used to be able to pick whether you wanted to spin or not. Then at some point it was just spinning. And now I guess there’s no spinning at all. It’s definitely been something I’ve paid attention to because the spinning made my mom sick and hurt her back
I remember picking whether I wanted to spin or not. Being thrill junkies, me and my parents, of course, picked spinning.
Rode this in 2017 cuz it was thunderstorming and it was the only thing open. I can 100% agree with everything you said it has not aged well
Despite never going to universal Orlando, I was expecting this ride to be akin to a log flume based off my knowledge of the movie
It is what it is, and what it is, is a charming tribute to Cat in the Hat. Everyone should ride it once. If you don't like it, don't ride it over, and over, and over, and then complain about it.
That’s the problem. I did like my first several rides, but then it got worse over time. If it sucked from the start then I wouldn’t be making this video
@@AttractionIdeas - Sorry for my harshness.....But honestly....You've ridden it so often that you're being overly critical. The ride is reasonably-well maintained, kids love it, and it's air conditioned. I don't think it bothers most occasional riders that the overhead lights and projectors are visible, since there's so much to look at around you. Since you're so familiar with the ride, you're numb to the content. Please, don't diss the ride for those who might want to experience it for their first (and perhaps only) time!
@@mattrost2574 he may be a little intense about it but I see his feelings. Won't you've missed the late 1990s?
I liked the movie, I know it gets a lot of hate but I don’t care, I liked it when I was little
I went on this ride blind and OH MY GOD my dad and I were CRACKING UP IT WAS SO FUNNY
Agreed. Rode this back when it opened and a LOT of fun. Went back a year ago after 20 yrs with family and hyped this up to my kids and everyone just yawned.
Its one of those rides to get on when its too hot outside.
true lol
Honestly I would love a rollercoaster like the one that was in The Cat in the Hat Live Action movie. Maybe not a full coaster, but maybe a simulation ride like Smuggler's Run or Star Tours. That way it can be Cat in the Hat themed most of the year, then make it Grinch themed during the holiday season. You get both of Dr. Seuss's biggest properties and you give people a reason to come back more than once.
Anything Cat in the Hat movie related I'm down for.
If that happened, there would be a lot of complaints of the ride calling guests Dirty Hoes
I love the Cat in the Hat movie way more than I should as well. I love the adult humor and it’s such a fever dream it’s perfectly awful and I love it.
Dude I rode this ride as a kid and always had great memories of the spins. Then I rode it when I was older and the spins were gone. I literally thought that I just remembered the ride wrong lol. I knew I wasn’t crazy
I remember when I noticed the spinning going away. At first I thought it was just being repaired but once I figured out it was gone I was really disappointed. What once was a fun little ride is now a run down passable attraction.
I wish I could have gone on this ride when it was new.
When I went on this back in 2015, I thought it was an OK ride. It was nice to sit down and get out of the heat for a few minutes. But they seriously could do better. This ride really NEEDS some T.L.C.
Did anyone get tripped out when he aimed the camera at the cats hat and the sky looked like a wall backdrop!? That shit was tripping me out🤣🤣
When I went in 2012 the spinning was still somewhat functioning and it was a ton of fun!
Shame it isn't working so well anymore.
I remember it being overwhelmed when I road that ride. Too much going on at once for me personally.
However, I do love this guy’s passion in talking about this. You can tell he really cares!
Last time I went on this in 2007 it looked like it hadn’t been dusted in ages.
I rode it earlier this month. Thought it looked great.
I went in 2006 when there was still some spinning. My friend Martha-chan went in 1999 and 2000, when the ride still spun like the teacups at MK. Now, I want to experience the REAL spinning. Haven't cried this hard since Boba Fett got hit with his own sonic bomb.
For me, Universal fell from grace when they ditched the attractions based on Universal Studios history and films, opting to license characters and properties from other studios. The park has little to do with it's name sake. It could be called John Doe's Islands of adventure and it wouldn't make the parks any different.
I'm just glad the park is always improving and updating itself. I can't stand what Disney does just leaving their parks mostly untouched for decades.
As long as they never get rid of the Gory, Gruesome Horror Make-Up Show.
@@WPorta1969 IKR? I went in 2006 and I loved that show!
i was told to think of the animatronics as creepy robots that could jump out at you and now half of the rides like this ride and the e.t. ride are terrifying Lol
but during the summer the cat in the hat is a great ride to go on because of how cold it is in there tbh
I went on it January 2020 (before covid hit the U.S.) and while I love this ride with all my heart. A lot of the animatronics looked hella crusty , near FNAF level. Hopefully they refurbish the ride like they did for Super hero island. I saw your title and thought “who am I fighting?”. But you brought up some good points lmao. Great video my guy
this whole area is so disappointing. This ride feels like it was built in the 50's and 60's for a cheap roadside amusement park that should already be shut down, sad to say. We love the CitH, but, they have not done it justice, save for the art and the static stuff.
I love how passionate you get about this ride because same !
Damn you really hit the mark. Apart from charm, the ride was pretty stale and the animatronics looked pretty janky as well. Could have really used those spins. However it did look like it was fun way back when. I hope they do something to it rather than just let it rot
I love this ride because every time my mom and I go to Univeral Studios Orlando, we ride Cat in the Hat or E.T. Adventure
Went to Universal Orlando in 2017 and if I'm being honest, this ride is one of the few token strong memories I have of being there. My sister and I were having the time of our lives and came off the ride crying in hysterics, we were laughing so hard (our sense of humor leans to the surreal). I'd love to ride it in its dilapidated state once again just to relive that experience, but I do agree it could have something better done with it 😂
I would love a Sam I am themed ride- based on the new show Green Eggs and Ham (On Netflix) that would be amazing
What about the second season?
They should make a grinch ride based off the Halloween special during horror nights, Christmas during the winter, and then during the rest of the year have a grinch and cat in the hat together in the same ride with a unique story.
The Grinch Grinches The Cat In The Hat
They can’t tho. Miss Geisel threatend to pull the contract if they ever did horror for Seuss. They did it once in 2003 and she was furious .
Ridden this all the time. The CGI part used to scare me for looking so bad. Also, I remember until around 2016 or 17 that there was only one part with intense spinning, and that was after the crazy Blacklight room scene and we were in the messy house scene.

I saw the Cat animatronic you specifically call out in another video, looking in much better shape, all the details are still clear and present. It looks like the Cat in the Hat.
Then I come back to this video and see the Cat animatronic looking like something out of a horror movie. His eyes are completely sunken in, the definition of his mouth is completely gone yet it still moves as if he's trying to talk with his mouth sewn shut, all the black lines are gone leaving him completely white, the latex is wrinkled and sagging, he looks like an undead skin demon. And this video is a year old! I can't even imagine how much worse it must it look now.
The monster cat looks so disturbing, that it just makes the other effects look even creepier just by association with it. Like some of these things, like the spinning scribbles and the screaming heads coming out of the pictures on the wall look downright Burton-esque. They could turn this into a HHN attraction with very minimal changes.
I noticed that too about that animatronic , I actually believe he that could be a replacement, the books in his hands and some other details are different than the original fully painted one, so I guess the original one broke and they had to use a spare
i find the ride amazing with friends- especially screaming whenever the things pop out
Great vid! I have a huge emotional connection to the parks especially this ride. Deep down I know this ride isn’t what is used to be but there’s still that kid inside of me who wants to keep riding it cuz of nostalgia. A lot of valid points were made including the ride not spinning and how the pacing of the ride is off. Soundtrack is a banger and as well as the gift shop. Keep up the great work and look forward to your next videos!
i didnt even know this was here until this week
Here’s my ideas for this land, because the whole land needs more
1.a grinch roller coaster
2.the cat in the hat gets an upgrade plus new scenes
3. something Lorax themed, like maybe just a theater, just something to do with the Lorax, like a similar ride to Micky and Minnie’s runaway railway
that would be nice
And this is the one ride where they decide to tell guests that they are *under surveillance* during the ride.
They even had enough boldness to draw a Seuss styled surveillance camera to go alongside it.
wow
About a few weeks after I went to IOA in 2017, I made a moc up of an animatronic for the ending part with the Cat on that machine with hands. One of my favorite ideas for a refurbishment I’ve had.
I could see the show lights on the heffalump and woozles scene on Many Adventures Of Whinnie The Pooh at Magic Kingdom.

Universal takes the phrase “if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it” too literally... toon lagoon, seuss landing, ET, + even some other aspects of the park like the simpsons ride, the marvel area. It feels like there are rarely any updates to rides, + the only reason they get attention paid to them is if they either break down or are demolished for other rides to be put in their place :/
Well, if you're suggesting that they update the ET ride, then they won't. That's basically the only sacred ride, and Spielberg himself supposedly loves it, so I don't see it being updated or demolished anytime soon.

I've been on this ride one time in my life and it broke down.... This was over a decade ago
I had family come in from out of town not too long ago, and I hadn't been to Universal in almost 10 years. We got to Cat in the Hat, and I wasn't expecting much as even with the last time I rode it, I wasn't all that impressed, but man, this time, it was the worst experience of the day after having done Velocicoaster, Hagrid's, and Forbidden Journey first to avoid longer lines. I felt so bad for the adrenaline junkie kids my cousin had brought with her and I was so happy we rode this before going on Hulk, which they then rode three times in a row. I remember I used to get off that ride and feeling dizzy, and this time, we made I think one complete rotation. Then it was Hulk, Spider-Man, Doom, Kong, all of Jurassic Park, Toon Lagoon, and then around clockwise to do all three coasters again. It was a great day, but I don't think anyone's going to remember Cat in the Hat. Everything else was a great thrill, and in a park full of thrills, to have Cat in the Hat in the state we saw it, even as one of the tamer rides and in the tamest section of the park, you couldn't even really enjoy the visuals of it. They need to overhaul this attraction because to have a Grinch attraction year round seems a bit odd unless you were to explore his hatred of all things celebratory throughout the year.
Cat in the hat just sad now :(
Never heard someone so passionate about the Cat in the Hat ride as I am with the Woody Wood Pecker ride.

This was an awesome video. Well done!!
Be careful what you wish for. The last thing universal needs is another screen ride lol.
Could work for Dr. Seuss if it was done similarly to Mickey’s Runaway Railway
My best friends and I went to Universal Studios last year for the first time ever. Of all the rides we went on, this one was the creepiest. Crazy giggles from up above, the Things' hair being weighed down by the ages, and a few minor glitches, and for anyone not knowing the context, it was super creepy. I'm not complaining too much because I adore creepy, but this ride's creepiness factor was unintentional on its part.
I still like this ride because I love Dr.Seuss
I really enjoyed the ride when I went to it in 2014 , interested on its apparent fall from grace.
I want it to stay lol it’s one of the few(very few) rides my wife will go on with me lol so it is always a pleasant experience but I agree it definitely needs a refurbishment
Please make a hashtag to get Universal’s attention on this issue. PLEASE 🥺
as I recall reading - the spinning was slowed down due to a child falling out (about 10 years ago) - they said the child slid down from the seat - and the couch/car spin then caused the fall out of the vehicle.
This is what I remember as well. A small child was thrown out of the ride during the spinning scenes. Since then, no more spinning.
