SHOCKING POKER SCANDAL: The $1,000,000 Lie

  • Imagine investing in a trusted friend. This guy is crushing the poker tournament circuit, hitting six-figure scores, and now is playing in some of the juciest cash games in Florida. But suddenly he can't beat the games, and you're on the hook for hundreds of thousands of dollars in losses. This is exactly what happened to Jonathan Jaffe and Kane Kalas, among many others, who placed their faith in Ian O'Hara.

Ya got no idea how the poker economy actually works. Staking happens routinely and for huge amounts, yes maybe a written contract by a lawyer is needed so if it's not fulfilled you can sue later. How it works though you get the high stakes guys putting people who have some results in tournaments. It is very hard to win a tournament a combination of luck and skill is involved, so high stakes pros will back people that have impressed them. You get a stable of 10 or 20 people in a tournament and one of them wins or gets to a final table you get a return on your investment. Jaffe and Kane weren't just funding Ian, usually if you are backing people you got multiple people in your stable. When those up and comers do become successful and take bigger pieces of themselves, they too will look for people to back usually if they aren't scammers like Ian. This is why I buy action on stake Kings. Stake Kings pays me and the player pays stake Kings.

I loaned a poker player money once and one time only. I don't know why I did it, I barely knew the guy. I guess it just made me feel important that someone would come to me since I'm a recognized winning player in my card room. I gave him a little bit at first which he made good on, but then he asked for more later and then stiffed me. Live and learn.

If I was being backed in poker I would make sure all the verbal poker deals are made in California so that I can never be sued when I never pay the money back. Thanks for that lesson Mike Postle!!

In my view if you dont have the money dont play.If you cant afford a $5000 buy in play a $50.00 buy in.If you cant affor a big cash game play a small one.I would never stake anyone and I wouldnt ask to be staked.

If your being staked, you gotta realize how lucky you are and appriciate the oppertunity to play without a true risk of ruin. Good lord I hate stories like these. Makes it near impossible for good responsible players to ever get backing.

I don't understand how the backing systems and stakes work. That part makes the whole story more difficult to understand

The pictures of O'Hara living a notably more lavish lifestyle WHILE things truly started to get suspicious..............honestly leaves me feeling no shred of sympathy for him. "Genuinely remorseful" my ass.
