- We've seen a fair amount of poker cheaters and scammers over the years, but this one truly has a cruel twist. Rob Mercer received an outpouring of support from the poker community after coming forward with terminal cancer and a dream to play in the World Series of Poker main event. There was just one problem: It was all a big lie. He collected an estimated $30,000 - $50,000, with even some help from Hustler Casino Live, before finally confessing that he made the whole thing up.

Come on, you can't just always have cancer every time you say you have cancer. No cancer at all was one of the best bluffs he could have had, total bottom of his cancer range.

@@joerussell9574people should be wary about giving donations to strangers over the internet. they should expect the person to be highly vetted. people not doing that is what caused this problem in the first place.
Why would anyone lie about having terminal cancer? It's bad enough lying about having cancer, but when you add in the terminal part to the equation, it's never going to balance. Thankfully he got found out and all the GFM donations were refunded. Criminal charges must be the ultimate consequence for this, because it's utterly disgusting to prey upon the kindness of humanity in this manner.
So his "apology" excuse is that he Google-diagnosed himself with breast cancer, and this time he's definitely not lying?
I think his google diagnosis was incorrect too, but for a few days he *thought* he had cancer and to him, that's almost the same thing so give me your money and poker and Candii the prostitute I mean horny pornstar

As someone that had three surgeries in August for actual cancer. This pisses me off.
I don't have any money
I'm a leukemia survivor who has been lucky enough to be in remission since 2002. I won't get into it all here but suffice to say I went through a lot and have permanent physical side effects that will last with me until I die. There wasn't really go fund me back then but it would have never have occurred to me to me to ask for people to send me money so I could play the WSOP. There are people who actually need help financially to get through treatment and this kind of fraud makes people less generous to donate to someone in ACTUAL need.
His Dad stayed in the free suite too. Dad clearly knew. You know where he got his moral compass.
This is what people will do when they have no respect for their self. This a big issue with the people of our world. This was me at an early time in my life, but I genuinely asked the universe for the truth and I got it. I snapped out it and realized that I was causing all of my problems. Hope this guy can do the same!

I was one of those he duped. I gave him an unlimited gift certificate so he could get a toupee because he lost his hair due to the chemo. I wanted to confront him but he's giving my best friend a parking spot in New York City for practically nothing. So I have to be nice.

Did it ever get proven that he did have breast cancer? If he does have it, it's really only a slight lie... cancer is cancer. If he doesn't have it, it's outright fraud and he deserves prison time.

Mercer and Postle should become friends. They can sit around and complain to each other about how they didn’t real cheat people and unfairly got a bad rep.
This story really pisses me off. I was diagnosed with renal cell carcinoma (kidney cancer) last December. It has been devastating in every way. For someone to fake cancer is despicable. I hope this guy is miserable for the rest of his life.

Also, Doug….when I got my dx, not once did I think, “What will others say.” I was in shock and denial for hours. Cancer is for “other people”, not me. Then it turned into “why me?”. After a few days it became “Ok, what’s next”. Now I’m one of the “F&$k cancer” folks.
@@magnusred2945They took my left kidney out on Feb 3rd. After 8 weeks of recovery from surgery, I’m battling CKD (chronic kidney disease) and getting regular scans & follow ups.

As a current stage 4 cancer patient who's been battling cancer for 3 years now, I'm incredibly disgusted by Mercer. It's great to see the support the poker community provided him, then to see those kindhearted people be misled and scammed out of thousands of dollars is maddening. Unbelievable what an absolute scumbag

Quite a lot of people do the old cancer scam. It's usually twits on Facebook, but given poker's shattered reputation over the last few years I'm not surprised to see it here.
There are a few things that are unforgivable in this world and lying about having cancer to exploit others financially is one of the worst. It just makes it so much worse that daniels got dragged into this.
What's worse is lying about having the cure for cancer, and selling vulnerable, desperate people crushed up panadol for thousands of dollars they don't have.

He had stage 4 cancer of the morality. A surgeon was able to remove 100% of his ethics pro bono (the doctor made so much money from GOP politicians). Mercer recovered fully and never misses it in the least.

On Twitter i saw his story and my boys and i live near Vallejo but long story short. We invited him to Thunder valley and we will give him 2500 to play the 5-10 and buy him 2 weeks worth of tournaments here snd he flaked on us 5x with weird excuses and when we said we can go to you, we were about 20min away and he said meet him at the bank we said ok. He nevwr showed up again saying we were lying. But he sent us a message to us on accident saying hey dad i got us 4K .. SUSPECT and how he can steal money from Codi and waiting for him for the 2500 is unforgivable.. HE'S a huge POS. The fact that people thought hes note was 💯 was just awful.
Never trust anyone in poker. Even someone you play with on a regular basis. The second you lend them money they’ll disappear

Don't get jaded either. Understand that there are also vetted organizations who DO do seriously good work. Medicine Sans Frontier is one that comes to mind, they are a coalition of surgeons and other doctors who go to any country, any religious background, any social background, and provide life saving surgeries, triage of wounds and save children, men and women every single day. Don't ever forget that there are people dedicating their lives to helping others. Don't lose hope.

I don’t think you need to feel bad about being skeptical about possible new charity scams Doug. The community trusts you and even big corporations will do a big fundraiser where they actually prepay a million or whatever then automatically get their write off and what they collect no one really knows.
