Can Tom Dwan READ MINDS At The Poker Table?

- This hand from High Stakes Poker is wild. For starters, it goes EIGHT WAYS to the flop. This is unfortunate for Barry Greenstein, who raised under the gun with aces. Tom Dwan finds himself almost 100% sure that Peter Eastgate flopped trip deuces, but he doesn't care! He blasts the pot for over $100,000 and puts both opponents to the test.

There goes Doug slandering another member of the inner circle. Couldn’t take a single weekend off huh?
@@mylespappadato3166 Target practice.
@Doug Polk Poker I hope you considered everyone's feelings before making this video 🤣
Doug you need to make a video apologizing for this immediately! Not cool!
Dwan knew exactly what everyone had. In fact, he literally told everyone what they had. It was straight out of Rounders, one of Dwans best moments and one of the reasons he became a legend shortly there after.
True.
Dwan was very sharp back then. Still think the flop was a mistake, but he brilliantly played his way out of the spot, as Gabe said
There is actually a video of Dwan analyzing this hand a couple years later and he essentially said he knew exactly where he was at and even had seen a couple examples previously where Eastgate had folded in similar situations. Definitely not blind aggression, an insane play to say the least.
And i thought Dwan was a bad player, how wrong i was !
Some would argue this is the greatest bluff of all time. Including me
You can tell by his reaction to Barry folding he is well aware of what just happened.
Yeah tom even said right after the hand that Peter had the best hand if doug would have let the clip play a bit longer
@@charliec4166 Nah he explained a crazy looking 72 bluff once.
Thanks for covering this Doug! Truly an awesome hand. There's also a super badass moment after the hand when Eli says 'Barry folded the best hand' and Daniel goes 'Duuuhhh!', then Dwan points at Eastgate and says 'he folded the best hand'. Tom was just one step ahead of everyone!
Wow, that is so amazing.
But anyone with any poker skills at all should know that Eastgate had a 2. It’s not that crazy of a read
the way that hand go, it is clearly that eastgate have a 2.. if eastgate is in the last position to call, eastgate would have won that hand.. its just hard for him to call knowing that barry is still behind him..
Couldn’t he make that call with 88, 99, or JJ as well?
@@MD-jf1ml no way on 6 way pot Berry betting 10K and Dwan re-raising to 37K, there is no way he is calling with 8,8 9,9 or J,J with Berry still to act. I think it is the game of Dwan, he is hard to read and he showed so much strength it felt like he had A,2 as well.
Aw, you left out Dwan's line: He had the deuce. (callin' the trips that Eastgate had) What a moment!
Nothing else eastgate flats a raise with
@@benji9645pocket tens would play the way eastgate did but tom dwan had the tens blocker
Limping 10s? Lol
"I had it" with a devious smile 😂😂
1:04 didnt eastgate win the main not runner up?
He won 1st
Yea east gate won the 2008 main event. Doug doesn’t seem to care about facts very often
@@Bitty20 classic Dougie
You should have let the tape go another 20 seconds or so when Dwan declared "HE had the best hand" (pointing at Eastgate).
That's not in Doug's poker language, putting someone on a specific hand.
yeah it showed he knew exactly where he was at
@@Eye_Radiate_Light Also not in Dwan's either, apparently, since he thought he was winning.
Favorite hand ever. This made me want to play poker for life.
Lol, this too, is one of my all time favorite hands. It really is unbelievable.
This hand made me give up Hold Em forever because I'm just not that sharp.
@@DogbiteW The great thing is we can all find magical lines from time to time. This one was just so monumental for displaying what is even humanly possible to pull off.
@@erikperez8774 We can also say the play has evolved, because in today's games, this same line would get called, by either Eastgate or Greenstein, 80 percent of the time.
@@drdefx I think the opposite. People are more likely to fold in multiway pots, because people realize they should play tighter in spots like this.
Love your pause after saying "You've might have already watched this episode" aka "Why am I breaking it down". Dude, keep breaking these down, love the insight, and even if I don't agree or get it, I appreciate getting me to look at it a different way, and elevating my game. Keep it up!
Much Love Doug. Thanks for continuing to post content and not letting the haters get you too down.
In microstakes it's a snap 3 ways all in 😂
I would say it would be that way for 5/10 live.
Yeah against some random guy online he isn’t folding for shit.
He could know he was beat and still call. Ppl just want you to flip over your cards, to show them they are beat.
Young Dwan was unstoppable
he really did just own people.....but its hard to keep that up forever
Except when he ran into that Jungleman brick wall
Until people adapted.
Yeah durrrr was just too sangfroid and it came back to bite him. That was back when everyone was calling with those hands lol.
Did Sean starting doing a lot of blow? Or does he look super strung out because of all the stress poker brings? Idk
Dwan was Ahead of the curve back then
After the hand someone says Barry folded the best hand. Dwan says no eastgate had the best hand!! Dwan new exactly where he was at and what he was doing
Ya but it's kind of obvious when he insta checks the flop and cold calls a reraise in a 7 way pot in the small blind with all dueces in his range. The hard muck at the end was further evidence of a weak kicker folding.
I'm amazed Doug didn't include the clip where Dwan says Eastgate had the best hand. That was the best part!
it was very very obvious lol
@@SPQR_14 he doesn’t like dwan!
Name a hand that Eastgate coldcalls that is NOT trips+
I love this hand, it's Dwan at his finest. High risk, high reward - he knew where he was in the hand, sussed the situation out correctly, and applied maximum pressure.
He thought he had the best hand
@@fanfan7848 Thanks for your expert input. That has to be one of the dumbest poker related comments I've ever read.
@@pierrearr i'm not an expert
@@fanfan7848 There is no way Tom thought he had the best hand. He blocked one of the best possible hands (pocket 10s), although there was also the very slim possibility of pocket dueces. 1 combo of 2s, 1 combo of 10s (because Tom blocks 1 of the 10s).
Greenstein in early position is likely on a high pair, and then Eastgate realistically has to have a 2. If Eastgate had like A2, then Tom's play likely fails.
@@iamamish top pair is a good hand
This was absolutely most epic blufff ive ever seen in my life. Dwan is a genius at his craft
I Agree right up there with the Brad Booth/Phil Ivey hand also on original HSP
Granted it's heads up but a must see if you never have
Dwan vs Ivey 98s vs A6 was even more insane
@@Qaeter Insane in other manner . They both was very strong and knew each others play so well that his 3 barrel air bluff could be get called very light .
😂
The poker hand analysis is always great
How could u edit the moment when Tom says “he has the best hand” and point at Peter 😢
What a talent and ahead of his time Tom was
That's not in Doug's poker language, putting someone on a specific hand.
did you make sure to consider dwans feelings first?
😂
😮
😂
😂😂
😁
I watched this for the vibe that was present in the High Stakes Poker show back in those days when I was 14 and when players from whole world were able to play in the same player pools in the top online poker rooms too, and I get the same feeling as back then. I wish my brother wakes me up right now and says bro wake up it's 2007 :D
Left out the best part when Tom says "Peter had the best hand"
you just reminded me how much i really enjoyed watching tom dwan play poker
Tom hit puberty on the "I had it😂"
"Big bang-hes got the whole gang" Lol Gabe
This hand and hand analysis was great!
The best player i ever knew had a saying, " the KEY to poker is aggression, the SECRET to poker is folding ", i don't know how true it is but i never forgot it!
Sounds like some of the bs qoutes girls post on their insta
this hand is amazing. thanks for reviewing it, Doug.
Love the content man thanks ❤.
One of the greatest bluffs of all time. Tom knew exactly what he was doing he'd never bet turn with Q10 for value given that Eastgate called and Greensteins hand is face up
@@88mphDrBrown Pretty obvious what both players have by the turn
Obviously he was bluffing. The question is was Dwan being Dwan and just randomly clicking buttons or not.
@@Dreamagain11 it's bluff or value bet there's no other option silly
@@88mphDrBrown Eastgate came fresh of his wsop win, playing his first cash games. It was pretty clear he was only playing made hands and was targeted for those reasons.
How is Greensteins hand faceup? If he was any good he never gets to the turn with less than trips
The dirty “ i had it “ at the end lol
This hand as well as Doug's attempted bluff vs Antonius years back are two of my favorite cash game hands
Where can I find this hand?

Tom Dwan is the scariest poker player out there, imo.
At the end of the hand Dwan made a 2k sidebet with Doyle that Peter had the best hand. Greenstein's call still baffles me.
Anazing. At this point the og legends hadnt seen elite online guys. When this happened the skill gap between dwan and the field was as big the gap between doyle and a random businessman in bobbys room
cant wait for the Dwan v Ivey hand, you know at this point that it's coming, I'd also like to see Doug ponder the hand between Antonius and Laak bluff :D
Most entertaining poker for sure I loved that series!
The golden age of high stakes. I was so hyped to see ziggy finally
You know Tom Dwan gave an analysis of his thoughts at the time in an old video right? He literally explains that he thought Peter had a weak 2 and Barry had an overpair, and he figured he could get it through because the pot started 8 handed.
Great breakdown, solid. 👍
Appreciate the 2023 analysis. Thanks Doug!
Greenstein always has aces
Bro… what a lineup!!!🔥🔥🔥
u shoulda added the part where dwan says peter had the best hand after that hand is over. goes with the title
Imagine saying all the notable people at the table and not mentioning the legend of poker, Doyle.
Dwan made one of if not THE BEST MOVE EVER. COMPLETE GENIUS
I'd put it up there with the brad booth/Ivey hand where Brad got Ivey to lay down KK
@@danielmahusky5780 I remember that hand, they were playing with bundles of cash, that was back when Brad had money, I am in Canada near Toronto and 20 years ago played in some underground games with Brad, he is a good guy, online poker is what got him and many other good live cash players
one of my favorite hands for sure
Doug an idea for one of your streams is to only have old-school high stakes poker pros at the table as it would be great fun seeing them play now as opposed to then.
“I had it” 😂😂😂😂😂
'from a few years ago, er, more like a decade ago' Me, every time I reference a memory, then realize I'm old as fuck and what I'm talking about is ancient history.
one of the best hands iv ever seen played
This is the hand that taught me the concept of bluffing with a made hand (like top pair Q kicker)
Ive seen dwan talk about this hand and he was like yea, i can get barry to fold aces, no problem
8:16 "burrgardless"
Well played Doug
We need Tom at the Lodge!
I could swear I saw you analyse this hand before.
Nontheless, thanks for the video.
lol it'd be terrible for Tom to play TT this way. And Tom got lucky Eastgate didn't have 7/2.
If you think about it, Tom Dwan was representing pocket 10s only. No hand with a deuce in it makes sense to just call first in pot after greenstein raise with many players behind to potentially squeeze.
he was likely to just call with full house instead of raising
i agree. barry gave him credit for 10's
Peter Eastgate won the WSOP main event the year this was broadcasted. Not second as Doug said. He also moved from his home country to England between July and Nov 9 to smartly dodge taxes. Got sued by his country and won.
Wow!
Its a good bluff because with that many people its super underbluffed. But you can also run into it a lot.
Dwan ....you the man!!!!
Doug acknowledging Negreanu on a Poker Hands video is the last thing I thought I'd ever see
They are friends now.
This is why I just love Tom Dwan.
He can literally drool in a bluff and still his dead doll pokerface psychs them out.
God i love him. So hot. sosoohot
Benyamine, ilary, that Peter guy... Some line up there... 😂 Did you ever played with those 3??
Did Greestein ever give an analysis of this hand? Love to hear that.
He posted about it on 2+2. His flop bet sizing was standard at the time, so there wasn't much question there. His flop call was pretty awful, and the only justification he could give was "Maybe I'll hit an Ace." . Otherwise it came down to a soul read on Dwan, and he just couldn't bring himself to think the kid could be making that kind of move. He said he hadn't considered that maybe Dwan was spazzing with a T because it would block TT, which would be the only justification for a calldown.
@@RangeWilson Thanks for his recap.
Runner up 🤣
For real though this hand got me into poker and this completely is the reason I always think I can get them to fold haha😅
the brilliant part was making eastgate fold despite know the strenghth of his hand
Favorite hand of all time
You're a good man Doug. Its easy to become jaded and sidetracked, most do, you never did.
Be you.
15:48 - "I had it..." That alone shows you a lot about his discipline and game plan
Tom wins the prop bet that Peter had a 2. Tom knew everything
This was the closest thing to a jedi mind trick I have ever seen.
There is also the fact Dwan blocks pocket 10s and the that if he put Barry on an over pair like AA/KK/QQ Barry hard blocks hands like A2/K2/Q2s and Dwan also has a Q which is another blocker to Q2s.
blockers are overrated...
Hey Doug good luck at that final table today 💰💰💰
The hand that defined Peter Eastgate's career. No balls.
You mean "discipline"? :P. It's a good fold (most likely solver approved if you somehow manage to run it on an 8-handed flop).
Was hoping Doug left Kaplans shout out to Stu Ungar at end of the hand.
Eastgate definitely won the 2008 Main Event. I believe Ivan Demidov finished 2nd.
Galfond really doesn't wanna go after anyone but saying Barry should've folded was bullying and that makes you a BAD person.
This was a great show.
This is my favorite hand of all time ..
Dwan looks possessed, staring off into infinity.. its weird
For Tom Dwan's action on the flop, Doug's thought: "You need to play extremely tight." [7:30] But has that sentence ever been in Dwan's poker vocabulary?
Should of let the whole clip play . Tom knew peter had a deuce and even made a bet with doyle that peter had a deuce
Tom Dwan is a Legend.
You vs Charlie carrol heads up! Is it happening and what he has said in his video, is that true?
Is this a re-upload? I think, for my poker feed, I am mainly following you only and this hand looks very familiar.
Was just watching this pot yesterday!
I'm certain Eastgate is supposed to call the entire way down.
I don't care what people say about dwan. I still love that guy
"You all want to chop" . Under 30s don't realize how insane this guys poker face seemed in 2000s when he hit the scene. He was a legend
I had it! Lol Barry greenstein probably still has nightmares about Tom dwan
For a couple minutes dwan was the best player in the world
You left out the best part, where at the end he correctly says Eastgate had the best hand.
Doug, big fan, love the videos keep them coming. However in this hand I have to disagree with your analysis.
Yes, 100% Dwan made a great play due to his knowledge of Eastgate and Greenstein. And maybe it’s not your analysis that is off but Eastgates play.
I mean if you’re going to call preflop with 2/4, what flops are you hoping for that is much better than this one, sure 2/2/2 or 4/4/4 or 4/4/2 and so on but 2/2/10 is pretty amazing for his hand.
So if Eastgate calls preflop, and then calls Dwan’s $37,000 raise, I think he has to go with it. Otherwise he should have folded preflop or on the flop. The odds Dwan was ahead was pretty slim, and I know it is easy to say, since I can see all the hands but if I were Eastgate or say it was Negranu or Antonio Esfondiari or even Eli Elezra I think they call Dwan down or even raise him on the turn. Eric Pearson would, so would Bill Perkins and I imagine you Doug Polk would as well.
So I guess my point is Dwan outplayed them but Eastgate was weak, again why call pre with 2/4 if you’re going to fold trip 2s?
Doug comes out as the clear fan favorite after taking the dogpile of jealous cool kids. Keep up the good work doug.
1) Peter Eastgate won the 2008 Main Event, Ivan Demidov was the runner up (the first November 9).
2) “Because you have the Ace of clubs you don’t block Ace Deuce of clubs” 🤔
I really believe that he was being put on a 10-2 hand...Doyle being there
Doyle should've rebluffed Dwan repping 10 2
I disagree with him saying he should muck 2 4. 2500 to see a flop with at least 17,500 in the middle. I call with anything. He probably also knew that Doyle was coming in behind him to make the pot 20k. Gotta call.
Nice old school analysis! Has poker evolved since then?
No poker players are worse lol , now we have RUclips blog makers as Pros lol
This hand is actually preposterous. The perfect storm of factors. Nobody else at the table is folding that hand except Eastgate.
What year was this?
Let’s go Doug, another great video
