    The one thing I will disagree with Doug is how chess is a "complete information" game. It is in it's literal sense but on the level Magnus played, half of the battle is prognostication and trying to predict future opponent plays/moves. I would think that translates very well to poker.

    i think poker and chess is very similar. Both games are about remembering past experiences in a certain spot. Both are also very engine based, chess players constantly uses chess engines to check openings and certain spots whilst poker players do the same thing with solvers.

  • @delphic464

    At the GM level of chess it must go way beyond "complete" vs "incomplete" information. I imagine that Magnus has some sick tell reading skills. He spent his whole career reading weakness and manipulating his position to press his game on weaker players, especially in endgame. Perhaps that equates to river play in poker.
    Magnus's confidence in his read at the end should have had the whole table terrified.

      I just watched a fkn 10, maybe 13, year old magnus take on the #1 in the world a few decades ago. A Russian guy, I forget his name, it's on RUclips though. Anyways, at 10 magnus played well enough for a draw... imagine taking some 40 yr old Russian dude, world's #1, to a stalemate at 10... dude def has what you wrote. I'm sure memorizing a solver is within reason too for someone like him

    That’s exactly right, chess and poker do go hand in hand for some reason, my two favorites hobbies of all time. I play the lodge 1/2 game and am an active chess tournament player, cool to see magnus doing the same.

  • @tonysavarese-oq9to
    @tonysavarese-oq9to Год назад +9

    Having the ability to memorize the sequences of a chess game, chess master moves, and the ability to carefully craft a strategy against a certain players mind set in chess HAS to help I'd imagine. Not to mention I guarantee statistical probability is in this dudes wheelhouse. I am intrigued. I think the biggest obstacle for him, is as Doug said, incomplete information, AND the variance of luck. Someone like magnus probably would be upset with doing everything absolutely correct only to have the magic of the deck run out on him wrong

    I"m a master level chess player and Doug Polk is spot on about the difficulty of transition.
    1) Your skill level doesn't mean squat in the short term (variance) which can be quite hard to take from a pride perspective
    2) Thinking in terms of probabilites rather than concrete lines is a difficult change
    3) And you're playing for money, mucho stress.
