      Once you learn to realize when people are doing stuff like what Negreanu did, you’ll want him to keep doing it.
      The problem with most online players is that they aren’t good at realizing when people are doing that kind of thing. It’s free information. And when you play live long enough you’ll realize that it’s actually a benefit.
      To be clear, I never do stuff like that. I never talk. I don’t make facial expressions. I don’t try those little tricks.

    Mixed feelings on the Helmuth thing. As I understand it, Phil was backing him for the specific live at the Bike show and they were passed the time the game was supposed to end. Is it right to force Phil to stay in the game, or even continue his investment with Mike after that investment should have been up? At the same time, I think it's better for Phil to say, "Hey Mike, the show is over, let's go cash out." With that being said, the discussion about Phil taking half of Mike's stack off the table took place over about 4 minutes, in front of the whole table. At any point, any player could have said that it wasn't cool. However, I clearly hear 1 player say that he's fine with it, a second player asks what's happening, is told and doesn't say no. Like everything in poker, you need to protect yourself, so if it's a problem, it wasn't conducted in secret and these players can only blame themselves. My guess is that most of these players see Mike as a mark. They know when he has a big stack, he rocks up, but if his stack gets cut in half, he's more likely to give more action and gamble. Perhaps all of the players would rather have gamble Mike at the table, so they were perfectly happy taking 20 grand off the table because there's almost no chance of Mike spreading around 40 large, but 20, he might start splashing a bit.

    It feels like there's some kind of collusion going on. I mean before they join the table they agree if one of them starts crushing, come up with some excuse for one of them to leave the table with the profits. Which they can split later, while the other stays and plays on with what is effectively the other players money.

    There should not even be a discussion. Its not allowed to take chips off the table during the game. Its totally irrelevant where Mike got his chips from, Phill, me, Trump, not important. As long as he sits there and plays he can not take off chips. The dealer must stop this. And even if the others want Mike to stay he either has to leave or keep his chips. A rule is a rule and not a rule for some and not a rule for others.

    The Phil Ivey thing still pisses me off. And no, Doug, Ivey did not bring his own deck of cards to the Borgata baccarat table. Who the fk was Phil's lawyer? They should not have framed Ivey's defense around whether or not he was cheating or not. They should have framed it around the FACT that the casino knew what he was doing and they were free-rolling Ivey. His edge sorting edge was not guaranteed. He could have lost a shit ton of money. The casino knew what he was doing and decided if he lost they would win his money and if he won, they would not pay him. THAT should have been the case made for Ivey's defense.

    It's kind of right in the grey area. In theory he asked Mike to get up. Which is in his rights as a backer. Mike then asked the table if anyone cares. He's a fish so they said no, he can keep playing. And he got to keep playing. Except it sounds like they kind of skipped some of those steps and went right to "I'm assuming no one cares." Which is wrong.
    Because Mike is a losing player in that lineup it's not a big deal. Except it involves Phil Helmuth who is a poker 'ambassador' and so it turns into something worth talking about.

    Don't care for Hellmuth but I don't see an issue. Some casinos make both men cash out then the one who wanted to keep playing just comes right back with half the stack and you are still accomplishing the same exact thing. Just let him take his chips and move on. I've also had this issue where they won't let you sell chips to other players until you physically leave the game. I don't see the big deal. As long as neither of you are in a hand you should be able to do what you want with your chips. For example I know I will be finishing up soon and a guy busts, he doesn't want to wait for chips at the cage. They won't let you sell him some of your chips until you are physically up and out of the game. As soon as I say I am done they then say now you can sell him some... As long as the money is staying at the table I don't see a big deal. Maybe you can tell me why it would be a big deal. I'm probably missing something, which is usually the case 😉

      The money was taken off the table; that's the difference. I agree with you though with your comments overall, and it's really up to the players still in the game to make the fuss. If they don't, then there really is no issue. Of course actions like this aren't advised for other reasons, like players banding together to force you out of hands, not being invited on tables, etc. Not a great move by Hellmuth, but I wouldn't mind if I was one of the other players just to get him off the table due to his antics ;)

    • @beanshady
      @beanshady 4 года назад +1

      @@ChinGuan31 True.. but he took cash from a player who he staked (Matisow) who is still playing after Hellmuth leaves. Hellmuth should have just left and settled with Matisow later, leaving that money and chips in play. Players can see this as poor etiquette, while also leaving his "friend" with less maneuverability due to now having fewer chips to call down hands with (more likely to go all-in as a result). In the end, it's about the players and how they view this action that Hellmuth took. It's not quite as bad as winning a very large hand and getting up and leaving the table, but it's in the same vein. Nothing technically wrong with either action, but both can have consequences in future poker sessions as I indicated earlier (collaboration against said player, not being invited to specific games, etc.). Me personally, I can't stand Hellmuth and would have been happy with anything just to get him off the table.. which is probably why the other players didn't complain about what he did.

    I think he should have asked but I think if he said he was staking Mike for just this event, then the event runs late and the stream continues then Hellmuth has fullfilled the agreed stake and it should be treated as both quitting the event and then signing back up for the table. The other players can totally refuse but I think its fine.

    Angle shooting and other shenanigans are shitty things to do. That said, this is real money and often a good amount of it so it will happen and you need to be on your own guard to protect your hand and your chips etc. First off, stop looking at your damn cards anytime but the first time and remember them. They do not change and every time you look at them there is a chance someone in that hand could get an angle to see them, not to mention relooking can often be a tell that your hand is not that strong. Second, watch anyone who ever says they are doing anything "blind". They are often lying trying to get people to overvalue decent hands that would be way ahead of a blind hand but likely behind the hand they actually choose to pull this shit with. Third, count your stack before you leave a table for any reason and when you get back. Lastly, exploit the shit out of them if they are pulling this shit. If you had a monster hand and someone pulls the Dnegs style obvious string bet when you KNOW they know what that is call them on it immediately and get the bet pulled back to the call amount. This makes your hand look weak when it is not and you will more than likely win a big pot from them as they fire hard at your suspected weak hand on further streets trying to get you to fold when you are holding a monster.

    The mainstream celebs are briefly entertaining, but it wears off quickly. Brad Garrett was a great example, he had a few laughs but was overbearing after a couple of hands. And you always know they will never win or play well unless they happen to find the ultimate cooler situation. The problem is, from previous examples, they always play extremely passive and end up slowly calling off their stacks. It's similar to playing a lot of older people in the casinos, you know they passively call pre and post flop, then fold turns and rivers without the nuts.

    I love that Doug calls people out for their bullshit and doesn't care who they are. Torelli, DNegs, Hellmuth, etc. doesn't matter. If you do something shitty he will expose your shenanigans.

    Doug you have said multiple times that you get better by analysing what the highstakes pros do but wich pros should I look out for now a day. As I feel that all the streamed shows have little to no actual good players in them

    Mr. Polk, when you were saying “people don’t really want players being loud and just making dumb plays” reminds me of Randall Emmet. Oh my goodness. I can’t watch the game if he is there lol
