- It seems bonkers to use the term ‘entry level’ in the same sentence as ‘£13,100’, but yet, here it is: the A. Lange & Söhne Saxonia Thin is the brand’s entry level watch, and it costs a whopping £13,100. But is it worth it?

Wow, the moment at 4:33 is breathtaking - the width of each of the petals in the hand-engraved balance cock is ~0.2mm. There are around 30 little ridges in each of the petals. Each ridge is 6 micrometers wide.
To put that into perspective, that's about the size of a single red blood cell. Or two bacteria wide.
To say that the level of detail is absolutely exquisite in these watches is a vast understatement :')
I'll never be able to afford such a timepiece in my life. But it makes me proud that many people appriciate that craftsmanship done in the city of Glashütte 30km near me so much. Great video!
#Neversaynever
not with that attitude. also 13k is not even that much tbh
@@r3dbullbbs Keep your mouth shut. You don't know him and don't know his circumstances. Don't judge.
simplyvl Don’t be a dick he was giving him encouragement
One day you will own such a watch !
As always... Awesome video... Your videos are oddly satisfying... The video, the script, narration... Everything...
They are not oddly satisfying. They ARE satisfying.
@@Rr_9991 They never reply in the comment section, though. Makes me wonder if they even read the comments.
Agreed! Often I'm multitasking while a wristwatch video plays in the background, but Watchfinder & Co. videos draw me in from start to finish. (The macros of the finishing of this watch in particular are mesmerizing.) Totally satisfying. 👍
Everything about his videos are amazing!
Being satisfied by design and craftsmanship is in no way odd
That is one of the most beautiful watch faces I have ever seen - It's pure dedication to telling the time and nothing else is really what a watch should be all about, and this one does it with elegance and simplicity. Worth every cent and I would buy it if I had the money!
I had it in my hand today , I can’t even explain how well done it is , the finish , the weight , it is the watch I would wear every single day
A. Lange & Söhne is a great brand. I really appreciate that they finish EVERY watch to the same level. There is no 'poor man's Lange' out there. They may not hold the value as some Patek's do but you always have to decide for what reason you buy a watch like this. And I would do it for honoring the craftmanship and appreciation to watchmaking. And maybe a little because of national pride ;-)
Their marketing department likes to spin it that way, but it's not entirely true. For example, some of their watches have had the same movements but on the cheaper model they would not expose the balance wheels so they can save costs on finishing, i.e. not finish it to the same standard as the more expensive model.
German brand?
The difference is, as a Patek owner you think about the investment aspect. When you buy an A lange you’ll most likely never sell it because you’re buying it out of the appreciation of pure watchmaking genius
I had two lange and two pateks, I sold my two Pateks.
I am proud to say that I am a Saxonia Thin owner.
Gotta spend the money somehow, that's all there is
James Wong you’re a lucky man with taste👍🏼
But is it accurate?
Your wearing a year's worth of my salary on your wrist lol! Beautiful watch you should be very proud of your little masterpiece. ✌️😎👍
James Wong , you lucky man... enjoy!
"NOTHING (except inflation) will ever stop £13,100 being a lot of money for a watch" That surprisingly made me laugh XD
DrKlaja he got that backwards. Inflation would make £13,000 seem like NOT a lot of money as it’s value would decrease. DEFLATION would make 13k seem like a lot of money!
LongTermCap he got it right actually. Hence, the “except” ;)
DrKlaja you’re absolutely right!! My apologies to you and watchfinder.
@@amirjon I'm impressed with how professionally you accepted the fact you were wrong, I wish there were more people like you around youtube :/
or a large price increase in 2021 :(
Lange & Sohne is my dream watch...and honesty, i don't know why. Just simple. They are beautiful.
Even under high magnification all the parts look so perfect and amazingly detailed!
Precision, craftsmanship, excellence, provenance, simplicity and elegance, all in one package. Bravo, gentlemen!
I don’t know how many times I have to say this but these are absolutely the best watch videos available! Thank you so much for the hours of entertainment and education
Lange’s pieces represent some of the best value in the luxury segment for what you get. People who say it isn’t worth it are probably the same ones who justify the retail price of a new Submariner, let alone one from the grey market.
I am writing from the future... The next two years are going to be a hell of a ride, but although many will fall most of us will get through it.
I just found an AD with a Saxonia Thin in stock, and next week it is finally happening... Good things come to those who wait
White or rose?
The craftsmanship and sheer attention to every single detail makes any A. Lange & Sohne worth every cent! Gorgeous time pieces!
Every age has it's true artisans. FM Acoustics electronics, Tidal loudspeakers, Roja fragrances, Claxton guitars, George Smith furniture, Purdy firearms, AL&S's rival, Patek Philippe...and A. Lange and Sohne, of course. I have been following A. Lange & Sohne for, at least, 15 years and admired their beautiful and exquisite creations. They are worth every cent. They represent the very finest of the great German culture. Great video.
You named some of the things that in a just world everyone should be able to appreciate and that, in a perfect world, everyone should be able to own.
Saw one in the flesh a dew days ago and it's stunning. As a Calatrava owner I can say this Lange blows the spots off the Patek..
WOW, both to the watches AND to your channel. Going past 200K makes me think you will be the first watch channel to reach 1M subs, and it would be well deserved. Such constant quality and showing actual watches instead of a face talking about a watch held 3 feet away from a camera!!
I hope to one day reach at least half the quality you deliver in your videos, minus the highest end watches you have access to.
Finding value in watches is ungrateful if we look at functions and performance alone, but this watch shows there is much more to watches than just accuracy and practicality, A LOT MORE.
Thank you for yet another great video 😊👍
Easily my favorite manufacturer!
The pictures on your profile say something different

After making a video about the iwatch, thanks for making the next one about A. Lange & Söhne. Pallet cleansed.
I want one so much, and I can nearly afford the Tudor I've been saving for for two years. I don't think my wife would understand if I spent two more years saving for a watch, especially if you could see the old Toyota I drive
Get an Omega Seamaster or Speedmaster instead of the Tudor. Or, save little bit more and get a Rolex! Seriously, at least it will hold value when you pass it to the next generation.
@@burairallawati1099 this. Listen to this man. And you will easiiily lov we to grow the omega or rolex & ppl will notice it more than this 13.000 pounds of . .. uncatchy
maome kat You're missing the whole point of this video. The reason people wear A. Lange & Sohne is because of the unmatched quality of the watch, not for the attention.
@@JPS-sc1zn fortunately & thankfully I not only understand the video but also appreciate craft manship. Hover the price tag here is objectively not for the craftsmanship but for the name... if you or anyone says otherwise they are genuinely mistaken or being sly. Even the video addresses this point. A rolex or omega watch will hold its value much better than this & make better hand me downs sadly even though this watch is good but not price tag worthy. It does not have limited number of watches built. It does not have an eye catchy design like rolex or patek. It is overpriced and for rich people who can buy 400, 000$ cars. Not for the person who saves for 4 years to appreciate good craftsmanship or uniqueness. Thankyou
Burair Al Lawati no, he should buy the Tudor since it is what he wants. Who cares what the price is when he hands it down... If you want to sell your watch in 6 months then you should care, but if you are buying watches for retained $$ you are missing the point.
The script writer was as skilled as the watch maker. Bravo.
There is so little perfection in this world. How can you not love it when you do finally come across such refinement?
It is worth - that craftmanship is something people should support by buying those amazings products.
By far the best watch videos on the web: beautifully scripted, attention holding and insightful.
I saw it for the first time a couple of days ago and I would say yes, without doubt, it is worth its asking price. It is the most beautifully designed and finished time only dress watch on the market with a fit that out classes anything Patek and Vacheron have to offer at the moment.
All A Lange watches are worth their price tag😍
I have a Lange 1 bought from Watchfinder and it’s a true Head Turner, it makes me feel special every time I put it on.👍⌚️
I think is unbelievably beautiful. Nobody matches Lange in beauty and quality.
I just sprung for one in white gold as I was looking for an understated dresser.
I will never be able to afford such a work of art, but that does not stop me being glad there are people who can produce this level of work and people who appreciate such work.
Never say never.
So far this is my dream watch
I’d like to think it’s sort of a “bargain” compare to a PP. Still can’t afford the “bargain” tho 😂
That shot at 2:02 with the shadow of a hand playing on the index marker... hat's off! :)
I simply must have an A. Lange & Sohne watch someday. Just exquisite craftsmanship and finishing.
My grail dress watch! Absolute minimalist perfection !! 😍😍😍
I just got my brochure and have difficulty deciding which one.
If I had $30K+ to spend the 1815 chrono ALS is a steal on the secondary market for the beauty front and back I would enjoy it everyday for the rest of my life . If you’re looking for a high level finished piece of art the Saxonia or VC Patrimony are great options for half the price. Would love one of these in addition to a Rolex or Omega sports watch. You can’t be upset with a fan of watchmaking wanting something made to the highest level or close to enjoy. At this price point there’s not much to choose from with that type of finishing. As much as I admire Grand Seiko it’s aesthetics and movement just don’t move my soul to each his own
A. Lange & Söhne is the definition of business at the front, party at the back
A Lange & Sohne doesn’t need sponsorship or advertising. It’s for the people who want to enjoy horology and craftsmanship without being flashy. It’s all about your feelings not others. Buy Rolex if you want to stand out and feel important
Love my Lange 1815 38.5mm in rose gold. Its simply amazing!
That 1815 is my grail. Thinner than the dato and that pulsation dial is what I'd definitely want.
I‘m happy and proud to own one too. Mine has the copper blue dial, absolutely out of this world.
Worth every penny. In a world of Pateks ALS stand apart
To me personally, Lange is better than Patek Philippe.
James Wong In terms of finishing and innovation. 100% agree!
Lange is #1 as far as im concerned. Anyone saying the base Saxonia has nothing to offer clearing hasn't done their research.
I do like it. But I don't know if its really worth THAT much. Since worth is relative, I wonder what it costs to produce.
Finishing??? Really? Take a look at the engraving text on the bridge at 4:19. And you said A. Lange & Söhne have better finishing than PP? LMAO.
So out of my League, price wise... not style wise. However, it is so refreshing to witness the absolute pinnacle of a craftsman’s strive towards “Attention to Detail”. Thanks for the video. I love the watch.
I would have liked to see a little more attention towards the leather strap’s quality.
The blue color on the chronograph is spot on. Like a dark slate color - my favorite.
Is it unfair to say that A. Lange & Söhne make Rolex look crude? They may be a hell of lot of money but there’s no denying the value of the engineering and artistry of their watches.
Amazing video quality as usual. I was a bit surprised by so much time dedicated to the price. The price on every mechanical watch is off-putting to the average Joe. But if you are into high end watches you're not going to be too surprised by the price. An A. Lange for $15,000 (USD) seems like a bargain to most. I'm seriously considering this watch. Thanks for this and other very high quality videos as always.
I really love the 1815 chronograph Boutique Edition. It is beautiful and amazing.
Yes !!!! More from A.Lange & Söhne
I bought an 1815 because of the ALS work ethic of putting the same level of workmanship into every piece. I prefer the 1815 over the Saxonia simply because of the numerals on the 1815 dial. I love that the Saxonia deletes the seconds hand.
I've never quite thought of it in that way when considering high end luxury watches - that you are literally paying to keep those hand made skills alive in this modern digital "made by robots" world we live in. When you pt it like that, it is far easier to understand the price, even though yes, it will always be out of reach of most of us.
I'm a fan of ALS, so the price tag didn't come as a surprise to me. It does seem reasonably priced based on the whole of what they offer- though, I can't afford one..... yet.... maybe ever. I think they're my favorite watchmaker.
Id rather have a JLC, the watch is definitely handsome but i like seconds on my mechanical watches.
I bought the JLC ultra thin moon although it's not in the same league as ALS, I'd rather a used PP calatrava at 13k though
@@londonsfynest the ultra thin moon is my dream watch. How are you liking it so far?
As with any product..the price is what you pay and the value is what you get.
Worth every penny in my opinion...
Five years later (2024) this thing now costs 23k euros!!!
If I had £13k to spend on a watch/watches I can say quote confidently that I would definitely have the Saxonia
Although it would be incredible to have my family name on a watch, the entry level commitment is hard to swallow.
Absolutely worth it. I just wish you can see more of the movement from the back
A Lange & Söhne are worth every penny, the most beautifully engineered and hand crafted watch on the market for this price range ✋
Abdul Rahman Abdel Razek yes I'd say to a degree it's even better than a PP
@@rayleeaustralia I would dare say, it is.
Abdul Rahman Abdel Razek Grand Seiko?
Definitely up there also with JLC, but i think Lange have a better feel to them.
Lange is indeed a fantastic watchmaker and no, there is nothing that compares value-wise.
It's fairly easy to justify the price of such craftsmanship when it comes to timepieces like this. Imagine walking around with what is essentially a Mastercrafted work of art on your wrist. Like an oil painting on canvas. It's truly a sight to behold. When thought of in a manner like this, only then can you justify the asking price. It's much more than "just a watch".
Isn’t an A. Lange & Sohne always build twice? As in, put together, let it run, take it apart, check everything, put it back together.
I want that 1815 chronograph. The Saxonia is worth the price. One would have to look around at what else one could get for 13k pounds and see if something else more fits into your taste. In terms of a time only dress watch, I can't think of anything better for the price.
Fantastic brand in my humble opinion the best but too expensive for my humble pocket. I have settled for Grand Seiko which is not sludge although not at the same level as Lange.
A watch with one of the most refined designs ever and built to the highest level of craftsmanship. In a world where you can buy several of those instead of a Nautilus, it absolutely is worth the price.
It's not a watch. It is a piece of jewelry that tells time.
Hard to justify the Saxonia imo when pre owned you can get an 1815 for the same money. A little more will get you a Lange 1 too (pre owned). Saxonia still a hell of a watch tho, no doubt.
The second hand is one thing that immediately tells a person if a watch is working. Without a second-hand one would have to stare at the watch for a few minutes to be sure it is working.
Lange is by far my favorite horology house.
Beautiful but I'd be tempted to wear the chrono with the dial facing my wrist 😍 Superb video as always. Cheers 👍👍
LOL now that made me laugh
Love the portfolio, the camera was nice but I love the new format 👌
I tried this watch on in yellow gold at Wempe and fell in love. It is such a minimalist gem, I almost think I love it more than the Lange 1 Moonphase, even tho it's a fraction of the cost. A pure watch.
Watch only comes in Rose and White gold
ALS watches are so well made. Every single one of them as the finest attention to detail.
Just rewatched this a year later and have to say yes. If in fact you can see the movement. Then it's clear it's worth it.
Is it me or I need to see something moving on the dial :)
Acually both the hands move, no very fast though.
@@afarhan21 yeay but for my taste I need somehing moving. My timepiece is a nomos club with the small second :)
Same,I like a bit of action be it a seconds of foudroyante
I mean, why buy a watch for its movement when you can't see it in action at all unless its off your wrist?
@@adityamukherjee9462 we should be happy that there's a display caseback 😂 rolex owners have a solid one sadly, there are very few skeletonized or watches designed to show off the movement from the dial side done tastefully
is there a black spot (lint or misplaced colour?) near the brand name though? or is it lint on top of the glas?
Man that chronograph is absolutely gorgeous! Love love love the blue
Great video. Could you please include watches like an F P Journe or Kari Voutolainen and do a comparison like you did for Patek and Lange ??
The only reason I would argue the price is too high, is because I can't afford it. It's beautiful, and I am happy to learn we live in a world where the efforts of craftspeople are so highly coveted, and still rewarded. Wonderful close-ups and video, thank you for the upload.
you always know how to bring out the poetry in watchmaking, thank you
Between Patek and A. Lange money wasn’t an issue. I wanted the best chronograph. It was an easy decision, I bought the Dato Up/Dn.
The title of the video is a question, which I assume will be answered (subjectively) by viewing it. Then, after six minutes the narrator asks me the same question, and to comment with my answer. 6:10 Not cool. Man-up and state your opinion--it's why I clicked and watched.
most beautiful watch in my eyes! love the simplicity..and.. no words can describe
Simply amazing craftmanship... I love the understated elegance of these pieces as it communicates true class. Bravo! Many times, I think the folks who appreciate this level of workmanship are those who work with their hands, such as dentists, surgeons, machinists, and inventors.
Growing up in the electrical business, I learned early on the greatness of exceptional craftsmanship. When visiting friends in Switzerland (where they built great stuff), I'd spend time in his cellar just admiring the house wiring, a beautiful joy to behold. Bottom line: The Germans and Swiss are capable of producing the finest things on Earth! Yes, these watches are worth every penny, that is if you have that much available to spend! Hats off to Lange!
Agreed! One can easily live in a house made of clad styrofoam and sheet rock, with plastic pipes and twist connect wiring. At 30 years though, the house goes into steep functional and market value decline. I’d rather spend more heavily on a brick house with lath and plaster walls and copper piping so that my son could happily live there another 50 years. So it is with a fine watch.
04:18
Is the gold (leaf?) on the engraved letters peeling? Odd if it's part of the design.
Great video and Yes for A . Lange , it worths it .
A Lange ...the rich man's Glashütte Original.
Can you do a video on watch sizing? For instance how this 37mm works on a 7 inch wrist vs a 40mm. Watch sizing remains a dilemma for many from dress watches to sports watches.
The saxonia thin is a nice watch but the chronograph is stunning i would buy that one if I could
I'd rather have one of these than a Patek Calatrava any day. Patek does have different levels of finish for their various watch lines. This isn't the ALS watch I'd buy though. There are watches in that price range I'd rather own where I wouldn't feel like I was settling for something just because it was easier to afford.
It’s not worth £13,100 to me but I can easily see why it would be, to someone. If I had the disposable income to afford one, I’d buy an A. Lange & Söhne before a Patek.
It sure does make JLC look like excellent value.
Lange is my favourite! Even though l cant afford a beautiful watch l understand why they are so expensive, and l love them!
What camera lens are you using? Please respond
The video I always dreamt you would make. My grail dress watch and my grail chronograph. I love them even more now! I just wish you had done a wrist shot of them. If you can, try to do that for every video from now on, please.
Probably yes. I mean it is offer and demand and last time I checked there wasn’t any A Lange & Sonne at Marshals.
Which camera and lens do you use?
Another great video, you never fail.
Videos as always, Amazing! Keep it up. Make more.
