I would personally go with the Lange in this instance. I recently went to my local Lange boutique here in Chicago and was blown away by how beautiful and artistic their watches are
The Lange is my choice out of these two, although generally speaking I prefer the Lange styling and movements. They master the art of making something classy yet not pretentious.
I enjoy Jenni’s voice so much, I will watch her videos even if they are about Rolex. Being my name, I am very attuned to different pronunciations of “Lange”. Jenni pronounces it slightly brighter than some other Germans I have heard. That could be regional accents. In the US, “Lange” has been anglicized for probably 100 years.
I wish people learned with Jenni how to correctly pronounce Jaeger and Constantin as well. Those are the most commonly butchered pronounciations by English speaking watch youtubers.
Don't get me wrong, it would be naive not to admit that Patek carries more cachet in the watch-collecting world, but whenever I see these side-by-side comparisons I always feel like Lange comes out on top.
The Lange wins. A perpetual calendar in a slim body with an elegant design and practical, useful features. The Patek is just too bulky, and the movement isn't as nicely designed. Of course it all depends on what you like, which is subjective. AL&S by far produce more watches that I could see myself wearing than any other brand.
I agree, Lange is my pick as well. On a side note, those golden lines by the day and month windows on the Patek dial look out of place and an afterthought design element.
I once asked a wine sommelier what was the best wine on offer from a very impressive list. His response was simply "The best wine is the wine you like". I think this response is quite applicable here.
Lange is the main reason I started paying attention to dress watches. @VOIDVIDS you are absolutely correct. The Lange is less cluttered, less overbearing, more readable and efficient than the Patek. Time and date are primary concern. Month and day are nicely placed reminders on the Lange. This watch truly copes well with human behavior and priorities.
I can go to an Authorized dealer for A. Lange & Sohne and will see time pieces on display that I can purchase or even ask if I can order other timepieces not on display. I go to a Patek authorised dealer and there is none on display and they tell me I would be lucky to be placed on a waiting list let alone buy a timepiece. The difference between a watch company that only sells to existing and exclusive clients vs a watch company that would genuinely want to sell to a a new potential customer or a person that does not have a history with the brand, walking into a boutique. I choose A. Lange & Sohne every time.
That wasn't my experience in London just this weekend - both boutiques were very welcoming and helpful, though Patek was the only one I went to where I had to make an appointment. Loved their watches very much, but I do prefer the Langes.
I prefer the A Lange. The case size is more to my liking and the dial in not as busy as the Patek. I do like the sculpted lugs on the Patek a little better. Both these watches are magnificent and anyone would be proud to own either one. Thanks for a wonderful presentation.
For the sake of comparison, styling wise, the Patek 5146R would be a more similar option to Lange Saxonia as both dials have kind of similar layout. However, be it 5205 or 5146, I would take the Saxonia over them any day.
I’d take the PP for these primary reasons: resale, provenance, prominence, & larger case size. I’m with you reference the lugs of the AL&S. They need to be a bit more trimmed. Both are beautiful/exquisite but I’d lean towards the PP. Nice review.
The A.Lange Saxonia Annual Calendar is gorgeous, everything is just done to absolute perfection with it's balanced dial, and the movement really makes your mojo flow! The A.Lange really makes the Patek look like it's playing in the minors league, and the Patek is still one hell of a watch.
Just a quick note of appreciation. Always excellent content, great camera work and perfect pacing. Your channel is one of the few I look forward to each week. Thank you.
The perfect pair. Mechanically speaking, I imagine the Patek is slightly more difficult to achieve that dial layout, but between these two incredible watches, there is no single winner. It's a win win for either. They're pure art and simply pinnacles in their world.
I think the difference between the two watches is the use of circles. The PP uses two large circles which pull my attention to the center of the dial. Encouraging me to follow the sword hands to playfully explore the face. Where’s the ALS grabs my attention with the big date and I follow the circles on the dial. Thus allowing my eyes to jump from beautiful complication to beautiful complication.
If i had that much money to buy these watches then I would definitely go for Lange. Big Lange fan for their craftsmanship. Although both watches are masterpiece.
Patek makes great watches, no doubt about it. But compared to Lange, this is easy win for Lange. In fact, I have my eye on the Lange 1815 Annual Calendar. Great video as always, Jenni!
Both are beautiful watches. I give the Patek the win on the case. Everything else goes to the Lange except for one thing. I have slightly over 8 inch wrists. 38mm would look way too small on me. It's amazing they can fit all that into a watch that size.
I had my own answer right off the bat. I own an A. Lange & Sohne Langemati. So I am biased. I have always liked my A. Lange & Sohne. I will admit openly that I own a Patek as well. But it is about as basic as a watch can be. But I will always prefer A. Lange & Sohne.
The pronunciation is top notch thanks. I prefer the attention to details of the Patek to the minimalist organised Lange. These 2 are great watches to have
2 FANTASTIC WATCHES BUT I JUST LOVE THE A. LANGE & SOHNES, WHY YOU ASK. FIRST I LOVE THE NAME A. LANGE & SOHNES AND I LOVE GERMAN MADE THINGS, THEY JUST GO OVER BOARD WHEN IT COMES TO PERFECTION.PLZ DONT GET ME WRONG,THE PATEK IS ALSO JUST AS EQUAL BUT I HAVE A LOVE AFFAIR WITH GERMAN MADE THINGS.ALSO THAT SMALL ROTOR IS A BIG CHANGE FROM THE MORE TRADITIONAL LARGER ROTOR..
I love the PP personally. But I also love Lange so much. I have also been saying for all long time that "Trinity" is a thing of the past. It should be called "Quadriga" and include Lange.
I will choose A. Lange & Sonhe every day of the week and twice on Sunday! I think that Lange surpased PP, AP, and VC in all aspect. Especially with the triple split chrono.
I agree. The Holy Trinity needs to add a 4th member and that member is A. Lange & Sohne. Like the Three Musketeers had D'Artagnan. Really should have been the Four Musketeers :-)
Could not agree more, I went into their shop in Dubai when I just opened and they have everything their, the stepfather were fantastic and I was sooo close to dropping 30k on a watch (which I couldn’t afford at the time and would have resulted in a divorce) regret? Hmmmm,
Hi my dear RUclipsr... These watches are the very best in the world. Only a little group of watches can be like these Breguet, Vacheron and little bit more
If I had to chose between the two I prefer the look of the Alange. I love the gold mirror finished moon although maybe silver would have been a better choice. You cant go wrong with either.
Lange for me, no question. I prefer the dial design and the movement is absolutely stunning. Why did Patek not center the day and month indicators between the hour markers? It looks wrong to me. In the US, we write the date differently, month/day/year, but we’re unusual in that regard (well, and others, too, like not using the metric system). Although I prefer the Lange, the Patek is certainly a fine watch, too.
Hey Jenny! Love what you're doing. Keep it up! If I would cross-shop these two watches I'd go with the Lagne. I've been into watches for about 7 years now. German watches have grown on me over the years.
I prefer the A.Lange over the Patek , the dial has a much better layout and overall classic look , the Patek's three squares for date look a bit odd , also for the case back , the Lange looks to be more intricate and as it has a mini rotor you can see more of the works , so if you were to score each front and back , It's 2/0 in favour of the A. Lange Saxonia for me... having said that , I'm actually not keen on any Patek designs to be fair... I think they are an acquired taste... Not for me ... even if I had the funds.. Great review as always Jen..
On another video I unfairly criticized you for being Lange-centric given that you’re German and not giving enough love to Vacheron as an example. Well, I just bought my first new Lange and I could not have been more mistaken. It is perfection.
I am choosing the A Lange & Sohne Saxonia Annual calendar because its dial is symmetrical, beautiful, and has the practical big date. the three little calendar windows look ugly in the Patek Philippe. I like the Lange transparent case back that shows the beautifully engraved micro-rotor and balanced wheel. The transparent case back of the Patek is beautiful but not more beautiful than the Patek Philippe. I think A Lange and Sohne sound better in French and English than in German.
When it comes to Swiss watches, there is Patek Phillip and then there is everyone else. When it comes to ALL watches, there is A. Lange & Sohne and then there is everyone else.
On the PP, the font on the date wheel should match the font on the 24-hour dial. Since they don't match, it looks like PP just pulled a generic date wheel out of the parts bin instead of delivering a holistic design.
Another fascinating and informative review. I wanted a Patek for some time as my grail watch and hopefully one day will get one. I think the day-date-month display windows the Patek are clearer overall than the larger date with sub-dial arrangement on the ALS. But the Patek 5905R model with the chronograph would be my choice so I'd have the chrono complication too. I like how the second hand of the chronograph can be used as the watch's seconds while the single sub-dial is a 60-minuter counter. It retains the symmetry and visual clarity of the annual calendar.
Lange better movement finishing , case finishing, dial finishing , does not lower standards for entry level models, Designs more cohesive, best looking chronograph movement, more elegant, design more relative to its nation / area of manufacture. More handwork
How can you ask, "Which one is better and then not take a position? Regarding the Pakek, I would like to see the the day and month windows positioned and framed exactly between the hour batons. I go for the Lange - spectacular.
I own a Lange Saxonia Moon Phase Black dial and the Patek Annual calendar. Both are terrific timepieces. The Lange I like for the larger date, not as formal. The Patek has the history and a terrific timepiece, attention to detail on both brands is exceptional. I wear and enjoy both timepieces quite regularly. The brands are different, I don’t have a favorite since both have unique characteristics. That’s why I have them both in my collection.
Lange is the better one in my opinion. Because I like it more and also because it costs less. Patek is just charging for it's brand value , like Rolex. It's a status symbol , although I do think that they make good watches too. The Lange on the other hand is the underdog. I would love for you to do a comparison like this between Lange and Vacheron Constantin as well. The perpetual calendar overseas watch in platinum is my dream watch.
Going to buck the trend here and go with the Patek 5205 R, which I actually own. More nuanced case design and an updated 40mm size. The Patek has a great dial layout and is easy to read. Not taking anything away from the Lange, but I am partial to my purchase. Great vid from the premier lady watch geek 📺
Another great video Jenni! Love the comparison of two of the best from different corners. Lange would be my choice! Love the layout and case design and that micro rotor. Patek has a unique case design, and a beautiful dial too but Lange seems more room and open space to breath!
For dial layout I prefer the Patek with its cutouts for the day and month being instantly legible, it also has the nicest case shape (reminiscent of a Moser) While I prefer the way the Lange’s movement looks and is finished. If it were any other model that wasn’t an annual or perpetual calendar...I’d go with Lange. But in this particular case it’s the Patek for me 🙂
I love the Lange. I’ve wanted that watch since almost the time it was released. I’m finally going to take the leap and get one soon. White gold with a black strap.
I prefer white gold/[platinum/steel for the case. That said I prefer the Lange between the two shown here. For economy reasons, I'd choose Jaeger for an annual calendar.
I suppose once you can afford to buy watches at that price level, you would not thinking about resell value! My heart goes to PP, it is such an elegant and beautiful designed piece. My brain goes to Lange because it gives one more value for money.
I enjoy the work of both makers. But for Patek's annual calendars, I prefer the 5146. With that said, I don't like complications, in life or in watches. Amongst the Lange lines, I prefer the simpler ones: 1815, 1815 up/down, and Zeitwerk.
You can debate this topic endlessly. I'm just happy that we have both.

The Patek has the history and a terrific timepiece, attention to detail on both brands is exceptional. I wear and enjoy both timepieces quite regularly. The brands are different, I don’t have a favorite since both have unique characteristics. That’s why I have them both in my collection.
The Lange is my choice out of these two, although generally speaking I prefer the Lange styling and movements
Both stunning .. Lange most probably but both are beautiful..
A Lange FTW. It's not that I don't like Patek. But Lange is simply better. That's just my take.
I choose the Patek! The smooth flow of the case and the raised and angular look of the seconds is appealing.
One or the other, I'd go with the Lange & Sohne. While both are beautiful, Lange stands out to my personal taste.
Love both. My biggest complaint with Lange as a brand are the lugs. Their lugs across all lines seem like an afterthought.
Lange! Simplicity and in my opinion better movements
Lange: slimmer due to the micro rotor; more attractive movement with all the beautiful engraving; cool zero reset mechanism.
But in this particular case it’s the Patek for me 🙂
Lange, I prefer the look at the movement finishing. Although more than happy to have either if I could
In this case, I prefer the Lange!!! Both are amazing pieces.
Both Absolutely Stunning but I’d pick the Lange!
Trick question. I would take both. But I can afford none. Definitely the best two watch brands in the world.
I love the Lange. I’ve wanted that watch since almost the time it was released. I’m finally going to take the leap and get one soon. White gold with a black strap.
For me its Lange! Patek will go up in Value probably or stay but Lange will always win my heart based on the design and style.
Her accent is music to my ears.
Rammstein.
And very musical modulation, endlessly listenable.
I'd take the Patek Philippe. Love the case design.
I prefer white gold/[platinum/steel for the case. That said I prefer the Lange between the two shown here. For economy reasons, I'd choose Jaeger for an annual calendar.
Is that a piece of dust on the hour hand at 4:53 in the macro shot?
I suppose once you can afford to buy watches at that price level, you would not thinking about resell value! My heart goes to PP, it is such an elegant and beautiful designed piece. My brain goes to Lange because it gives one more value for money.
Lange for the win! Great comparison video, Jenni👏👏
Preference for the Lange and it's just personal preference but the Patek is gorgeous too
I enjoy the work of both makers. But for Patek's annual calendars, I prefer the 5146. With that said, I don't like complications, in life or in watches. Amongst the Lange lines, I prefer the simpler ones: 1815, 1815 up/down, and Zeitwerk.
