  • The A. Lange & Söhne Lange 1 Time Zone in white gold is quite an extraordinary watch. In this video I talk about some of my observations when it comes to ALS and grail watches, particularly how most watch enthusiasts like to consider ALS as a grail watch yet so few people actually purchase them when they are in a position to do so.
    I also cover my hands-on impressions of the ALS Lange 1 Time Zone : how it feels, how it wears and aspects that most appeal to me about the watch.

    I'm glad that not many people buy Lange, prefer a smaller group, feels more exclusive. Good that people go for hype brands. And i hope it stays that way, the last thing i wanna see is Lange produce baguette, ice out watch like patek, ap and rolex.

    Once Im done showing off with my rose gold day date, im definitely trading it for a Lange 1 moonphase + another watch. I think you’re ready for Lange once you’ve “been there done that” with the hyped models. But you’re making a very good point: i dont buy my watches as investment but it makes a difference to know that wearing a rolex is basically a free hobby. If you have a hyped model, you’ll end up selling for what you bought it new or even more

    Lange makes 5500 watches per annum, less than 1/10th of Patek's production, and they sell them all... so, of course only a limited number of people can buy Lange. I strongly believe that "collecting is not trading". It's nice to have a comfort feeling of the secondary market value, but at some point your collection will have enough "great market value" Rolex and Patek and etc... timepieces, that you will be ok to buy a watch without thinking about what will be the value next week. When you have the "long term" collecting mindset, you know that if you will need to sell your Lange in 10 or 20 years from now, you will never loose money. Mix your collection with "objective" and "subjective" timepieces, and you'll be fine.

    An obvious strategy would be to buy a near-mint, used one with box & papers on the secondary market and let someone else take the loss from new. But I guess if you need to subsequently sell, it would be hard and you would have to be patient to get anywhere close to your money back. And if you sell through a dealer you would take a big loss for sure by having bought retail and having to sell wholesale. Even losing 20% on these types of watches is a big hit in dollar terms. This is an obvious advantage for a watch like a Daytona where the difference between buy & sell on the used market is probably very small because the watch is so liquid due to insane demand.

    Why would I spend money on A. Lange when I can spend $55,000 on a used Daytona AND a Submariner. It should not matter that Rolex produces 1 million watches per year vs. 4-5,000 Lange produces(Patek makes 50,000). The Lange perpetual calendar/chronograph with a tourbillon on the back and power reserve makes the Patek dial, with it's assorted fonts look like a joke.

    The quality & craftmanship of A. Lange competes with Audemars Piguet, Patek Philippe, and Moritz Grossmann. Compared to these brands, A. Lange is less expensive. Because A. You know why many people are not pulling the trigger when it comes to buying A. Lange. It is because it is not Swiss made. It is a psychological hurdle. That is why many European watchmakers moved to Switzerland so their watches are Swiss made.

While they are superb watches I guess they can be a bit underwhelming for most people (same as a Credor Eichii II)

    42mm is NOT compact for a dress watch by any standard. Diver's watches are 42mm. The standard Lange 1 is 38.5 and the impressive Little Langes are under 37mm - these are compact and have plenty of complications. IMO, the Saxonia Dual Time does a much better job at tracking 2 time zones, much cheaper, automatic convenience, is easier to use, and is just 38.5mm - COMPACT.

    few people buy it because most people are normal working class with families to feed and an expensive watch generally isn't first on the list. people tend to settle for less, so they go out and buy a 5k Grand Seiko or Omega and call it good. Nothing wrong with that. Doctors opt for the Rolex because let's be honest, they aren't actually watch people but buy because it's recognizable and people know it isn't cheap.
    which leaves A. Lange & Söhne in a small predicament.
    I am tempted to follow the route of so many others and compromise my taste. but then I look at an A. Lange & Söhne and am quickly reminded that there is no alternative. I simply won't be happy with any other brand.

Craftsmanship for its own sake ie art.... I work in IT which is probably the industry with the most rapid transition between state of the the art and state of the ark 😂 and the fact that craftsmanship and quality like this still exists gladdens my soul. It's funny because these things are really cyclical, as well as selective. Cyclical in that there was a time when Patek was nearly dead and couldn't give away its watches, and certainly, the 5711 was not a universally coveted watch. Modern A Lange has only been around since the early 2000's so time will tell if its watches will grab a hold of the watch buyers money and attention. Its also selective in that not all Pateks, Vacheron, and APs gain value, and not all A Langes lose money. The Odysseus is impossible to buy and is very much over retail in the grey. Original Datagraphs from the first year are rising in prices. Similarly, other than 5711, and Aquanauts, not all Pateks rise in price. Same with VC and the Overseas.....really what else. Does AP make anything other than Royal Oaks?

    • @StandardTime
      @StandardTime  2 года назад

      Yep that’s very true. I love the Odysseus but unfortunately, albeit to their benefit so fair enough, Lange has gone to the extremes with supply of it. They’re learning from the best - Patek, AP so soon enough Lange might become unobtainable at retail. Although they hardly make anything non precious metal so that is still a bit of a different ball game. And yeah Ap doesn’t make anything other than the RO but they’ve managed to get the offshore to become a bit of a coveted model as well which I think is impressive. They’ve got enough variations to hold a strong identity and the code watches are slowly starting to do better as well.

    All wrong in this video. There are only 2 valid reasons why people don't buy Lange in volumes comparable to PP or AP, or Vacheron. 1.) Lange makes only 5000 watches per year. PP makes 60 000. So, you simply can't buy as much Lange watches as you can PP's. 2.) Instagram & Tik-Tok. These 2 had enormous influence on people (with money) regarding watch preferences. Al those 'influencers' without any real horology knowledge and taste are constantly flexing with their Patek's, AP's and Rolexes. That creates hype and (artificial) demand for those brands P.S. To put Lange in the same sentence with Rolex is insult to tradition and high horology of Lange.
