  • Motorola made some pretty big claims about the capabilities of their new Droid Turbo, especially about its battery life. Could this phone be my new daily driver going forward?

      He does it on purpose, but really makes you wonder if he really is that awkward. That's either good acting or just being himself...which is still good acting.
      His staff is just as awkward so I'm guessing it's more natural though too.

    It has been almost six years and I am finally retiring my Droid Turbo today. It got too slow and the battery has aged too much for it to be as reliable as when it was spanking new. An amazing phone that stuck with me for such a long time. Goodnight my friend. *closes box*

  • @Matticitt

    Let's be clear about "oww thickness is not as important as battery life therefore Motorola wins"
    Motorola DROID Turbo - 11.2mm thick - 3900mAh battery - screen-on time of 10h42m
    Xperia Z3 - 7.3mm thick - 3100mAh battery - screen-on time of 09h30m
    Yes, the extra 4mm in thickness and 20 gramms in weight are well worth the extra 10% battery life.

    • @rowan0958
      @rowan0958 9 лет назад +8

      to be fair though the xperia z3 has 1080p screen while the droid turbo has quad hd which consumes a lot more battery life
      though what i'd want most is a droid turbo with a 1080p screen that would have a ridiculous battery

    • @Matticitt
      @Matticitt 9 лет назад +3

      Rowan wans Yes, it has 800 more mAh so they're probably going torwards powering that screen. Still it's - for me personally - idiotic! Hey, let's make the phone thicker and heavier. Let's put in it a gigantic battery and a super fast brand new SoC... and then neglect those things by installing a ridiculous 1440p screen which is only 5.2" meaning NO ONE would be able to see any difference whatsoever. I love pixels, but sacrificing huge amounts of battery life, thickness and power just for that screen is idiotic.

    • @rowan0958
      @rowan0958 9 лет назад

      Mateusz Wojtkiewicz yeah i'd love to have a turbo with a 1080p screen and i have a 4k monitor i'm a pixel lover as well, i also agree with you when you say that 1440p is overkill

    • @Matticitt
      @Matticitt 9 лет назад +2

      I have a 4k TV and a 1080p phone - for most people that's an overkill already. If I start seeing 4k phones I'm just going to explode from rage.

    • @rowan0958

      yeah that ppi wouldn't be noticeable past 1080p on a phone

    I think phone developers shoukd focus on battery life more than on fancy specs and features. I mean, i know we are surounded by electricity but... Sometimes i wish it could last a week with full use. So i could use it as multitask... uhh... survival device. Like for GPS, flashlight and so on, if i for example need to survive the wild. Oh! And Waterproofness.

    • @MrSupercrazyllama
      @MrSupercrazyllama 9 лет назад +1

      if you get a galaxy device, you can get an aftermarket back with an enourmous battery, though it will make the phone big. My s3 has a 7200mah battery and nearly lasts the week with light use and battery saver mode on :D

    • @goxy287
      @goxy287 9 лет назад +1

      ***** Well that's usefull i guess. But how ever i look at it... well i know i just sound greedy now but... i wish they invented something that really lasted long without charging. And not just phones but cars and such stuff. But i guess that would hurt electricity and fuel industry...

    • @MrSupercrazyllama
      @MrSupercrazyllama 9 лет назад

    Just get a fucking Sony Z-series phone if you want a phone with two days of battery life or more. My Z2 is capable of that, and the Z3 and Z3 Compact obviously does as well.
    As a European I really don't get the "carrier exclusive phone"-idea either. I thought USA was built on a foundation of capitalism and thereby a free market situation?

    • @ShadowLimited310
      @ShadowLimited310 9 лет назад

      We basically have region lock but on our phones. It can be removed but it was outlawed early 2013 I think

    • @jasonstahl73
      @jasonstahl73 9 лет назад +5

      No, the foundation of the US is the idea of freedom (although currently it's freedom to make other people not do something because it offends a minority). Capitalism is founded on "Give me your money because you want the product that only I have. Don't look at that similar product, buy this one. STOP LOOKING!!"
      Exclusivity is an attempt by cellular carriers to encourage people to switch to them in order to get the "cool" phone. AT&T did it with the iPhone, Verizon is doing it with Droid. Not sure if Sprint or T-Mobile are big enough to do exclusives anymore.

  • @jasonstahl73
    @jasonstahl73 9 лет назад +2

    I got this phone as soon as I saw it was available. I've already dropped it out of my shirt pocket while jumping out of a truck over the side of the bed and this thing doesn't have a scratch on it. It came out of my pocket from about 5 ft in the air onto concrete.
    My previous phone was the Droid Maxx. I've used Motorola exclusively since the early 2000s (StarTac anyone?) I've always like the durability of my Motorola phones. (accept the Droid 2 and 4, the sliding keyboard caused issues after about a year of use)
    Great review Linus, I found the motion issue on the camera to be annoying also, but I don't usually take many pictures or videos, so it's not a big deal for me. But I'm eagerly anticipating the Lollipop upgrade.

    Why do people always want lower brightness levels directly from (android) phone manufacturers? You can just get an app like "Night mode" that solves this problem...

    • @GuyFromJupiter
      @GuyFromJupiter 5 лет назад

      Comment necro here I guess, but that just isn't as good. It's not as convenient because it requires using multiple options to dim your screen, and it's just a dark overlay on top of the screen so it doesn't look quite as clear are a natively dimmed screen would. I've used those apps before when I needed to, but being able to simply use the built in slider to actually dim my screen is far preferable.

    About availability, there is an international version of the Verzion's Droid Turbo called Moto Maxx that was release on Brazil in 11/05 (without previous announcements). Moto Maxx is the 64GB unlocked and carrier free version of the Droid Turbo and I think it will be available in other countries too (or Motorola loves us and we were just lucky to get this beast here in Brazil).
    Btw, great review. Direct to the point and it was good o hear your impressions about the battery and the camera.

    should've dropped the screen size to 4.7 inches dropped the resolution to 720p which would've got that 2 day battery life maybe even longer and made the screen brighter. Anything above 300ppi doesnt really make a difference unless u plan to use a magnifying glass with ur phone.

    • @ryanatta
      @ryanatta 9 лет назад

      ElitePotato8 yeah but if u make the screen larger at 720p the ppi may dip too low. I believe phone developers should first make the dimensions based on the size of the hand, then make the battery as big as possible then the best camera module possible then the screen. I mean honestly how many people prefer a phone screen over a TV or pc monitor for browsing the web or watching movies.

      just an idea, Intel and MS are taking too long to get into the phone market. I can see a deviance like Nexus 7 or 8, running windows 10 with skylake's architecture. Just one mini usb port and one mini hdmi port and you will have the most portable console ever made. Pretty soon all cellphones are going to be as powerful as the next gen consoles.

    I'm in Canada and I actually bought this phone. Nexus 6 is too big so this was a the perfect buy for me. I'm kinda gonna disagree with the battery part that although 2 days worth of battery is ridiculous. I was still able to make it through a 1.5 days worth of battery with pretty decent usage. I have the Kevlar Black Edition so its lighter than the ballistic nylon one. The weight as he said is actually perfect. You won't need a slim phone and this phone is actually perfect size and weight. It works on most GSM networks in Canada but I'm still gonna check it for Wind if that supports it. There are software bugs here and there but if you really want something like the Nexus 6 specs but don't want a 6 inch in your pocket this is a perfect phone to buy.

    I've had my Turbo for a week now. I've repaired nearly every modern day smartphone and I can say hands down that this is the baddest (overall) phone out there. There's only a few phones that really compare to this phone! I came from the Droid Maxx, which honestly I feel had better battery life, due to less screen/ram/cpu, the upgrades vs's the Maxx are well-appreciated and much needed! I'm glad they went "all out." It's virtually an identical phone only upgraded to perfection!
    Thanks for the review Linus, I love that you have a review for this! I agree that the camera is disappointing, but impressive with still pictures. I remember when the patch for the Maxx's camera (which did the same thing) was released, it was a welcomed fix to the camera, I predict the same. Can't freaking wait for Lollipop!

    Really wishing you would go ahead and review the oneplus one. Much like the droid turbo, it does have a different material back (sandstone). People on the forums usually report 1 1/2 to 2 days of use with the very light users pushing almost 3. I only ask because you guys focus alot on the hardware. I know you don't like the company, but I and many others would greatly appreciate a review. With cm12 coming out soon, it would be great to get your opinion on the device.

    So glad you hit home the importance of a large battery. I could care less if my phone is thin! 1080p is also plenty resolution for a 5 to 6 inch phone. Hopefully after the developers are done "showing off" they will settle in to a more reasonable resolution. Quad HD I'm sure is awesome but to me not worth the extra battery drain. Thanks for the review......still don't know what phone I'm getting though lol!

    I'm just trying to imagine how much longer the battery life would be if the display wasn't QHD. For me, even a 1080p screen is over the noticeable limit in resolution. If there would be a way for me to change the operating resolution of this screen (which I would imagine would be possible) I probably would do that to save even more battery life. I guess I'll just stick with my tracfone that lasts a good 2 weeks per charge.

    I think that in enclosed case reviews such as this one it would be a good idea to include how the temperature is affected by having panels closed or opened. This is especially important since there aren't that many people who does it. Because what would the point be to have closed side or top panels, if the graphics card gets too loud because of heat anyway?
    I remember having to look long and hard to educate myself about closed cases temps before i bought my obsidian 550d case and would've loved (and still do) to see the temperatures included in the check list from linustechtips on closed cases.

    Good video Linus. I've been a Moto fan since the Droid 1 and I'm very excited about this phone. I'm still Grandfathered into the 2000 mins, unlimited data, & unlimited text plan from 7 years ago with Verizon. And, my 12GB Droid Ultra totally sucks because I can't fit all of my music, games and stock trading apps on it. The Turbo's 32 or 64GB internal storage is perfect! So, I'll be upgrading to the Turbo ASAP!!!!

    I agree with you on the battery.
    Why do OEMs keep on putting small batteries?
    That is why I own a OnePlus One and a LG G2.
    Both with 3000mAh+ batteries.
    So I can go on my day without worrying about battery.

    Buying my Turbo in August of 2015, I can unfortunately tell you that the battery no longer lasts a full workday, even with Bluetooth off and using a 750mA charger at night since I bought it. The ballistic nylon has somewhat frayed and my clumsy hands have left a hairline fracture in the back casing between the headphone jack and the case seam. The screen has remained scratch free even if only due to my religious use of a screen protector. Responsiveness has diminished certainly, which is to be expected,a but I've also hit a bizzare bug unique to Turbos on Android Marshmallow where wifi connectivity intermittent and inconsistent, frequently preferring a 4G connection and switching to it without my input. Capacitive buttons are a bitch. There is very few ways to grip the phone that don't trigger them. AMOLED panel looks as good as ever. speaker really sucks.

    Hey, Xperia Z3 has a two days battery life. But it only works in some circumstances. First, it must be use in just normal usage, such as, just using Facebook, calling, massaging or even just taking photos. Second, no data or GPS is use. Third set the brightness to auto level. And there you will have a two days of battery life. Not to mention in addition facts from me, that's the wallpaper should not be active. Check it again linus to that to xperia z3

    Linus do you never kill apps? I can use my note 4 for 3 days without charging it, and that's with playing sometimes 4-6 hours of roms. As long as I choose a background that is not covered in white, kill my apps when I'm done using them, and leave location reporting off unless I'm using navigation. I can easily get multi day battery life.

    I hate the fact that I cannot "mark all as read" in my gmail. Also, excel still cannot be reduce to a readable and manageable size from a document that originates on a PC. Total buzz kill. The Bluetooth comparability in my 14 ram 1500 is less than usable but that I blame on the truck manufacturer. All the extra apps that come with the phone make it a little overwhelming for a new android user coming back from 4 years with apple. The constant bugging of apps trying to get you to sign on with what they are offering are nothing short of annoying. Overall good phone despite what was pointed out in this video.
    As always, another great video Linus. I'll have to share the I7 4770K build that I constructed with your help :)

    lowest brightness is not an issue with amoled, as using a tool that puts a black layer with a set opacity over your full screen, and because it doesnt use backlight the pixels will actually be darker and it will have the same effect as a lower brightness (though its not possible to install apps while using this because of google's security)

    I love your take on the battery! I'm not sure why manufactures can't figurine that out already? Maybe people just like to show off their phones. I'm rocking a HTC One M7 on t-mobil, and it's battery is pretty good, but nothing like this one! My old Verizon Rezound I updated with a bigger battery and expanded case, not ideal. Much better if the phone is designed with a bigger battery to start with! Thanks for the entertaining but semi-credentialed review!

    Hello Moto!
    I really like the idea of the ballistic nylon. I'm using an HTC M8 and the only thing I don't like about is how round the edges are and how slippery it is overall. Without a case the M8 is hard to hold onto and really slides around in the car.

    The Sony Xperia Z3 has a 3100 mAh battery in a thin and arguably difficult-to-hold frame. But Linus would still hate the measures that Sony had to go to to keep it water resistant to such a degree. It also lacks the new Snapdragon 805 processor, using the older 801, but it does still have plenty of speed, given that it isn't trying to push a QHD display, using a standard 1080p IPS model. I'd still like to see his review of it, though.

    To anyone wishing to purchase this phone: There has been a problem with the screen cracking without being dropped or being lightly dropped. Verizon knows about it and will offer a one time warranty replacement if this happens. I still would not recommend purchasing so close to the release since you would be likely to get one that does this. The issue will probably be fixed within the next few production cycles.(The last part is speculation, I can't actually say if it will be fixed or if it isn't already fixed. You've been warned.)

    the turbo is my new phone as well, and whats broken me from a IOS trend, i was on IOS for years and was considering a S5 or nexus 6 but was just coming to the idea i was just gonna go ios again but when i was introduced to this phone at the store ready get a ios things suddenly changed, and so far i'm pretty happy, and i can say this review is pretty accurate, tho i'ld say for some people like me who do lighter use i have had some days it seems like getting most of a 2nd day through it maybe possible, the camera is tuff but nice when conquered, screens insane, moto skin is ok, and i found it nice all the verizon stuff on it i didn't want dis-abled easily, i remember my last android i owned had carrier stuff that was simply impossible disable without roming, then with rugged nylon and thicker design this rely is the best, dont have be in panic on every light drop, good control, i like capacitive buttons, and the fact theres no huge verizon logo painted across the entire back is superb :D , all it needs is update and camera and i'd be like 11/10 phone
