    "Soft touch, rubber grips and plastic guides on the sides and the long micro-USB and prong system that penetrates the phone from the bottom. It works surprisingly well. It's easy to slip in and easy to take out, but it won't slip out by accident."

    Here in 2022, we still don't see any new iteration of this astonishing product. It's crazy to see just how ahead of the time ASUS used to be. I definitely hope that any lapdock makers can take this idea and turn it as a universal product. Smartphones of today are so powerful that it can easily be used as a portable pocket computer.

    I tested the Padfone 2 for a couple of months last year, and it was good. Loved the fact that you only have one device to have things on, but two ways of using/displaying them, and it was fast.

    Although I will not be buying such a device anytime soon, I found the review very professionally done. You managed to give the pros and con's of the device without being bias or at least that's the impression you gave. Once again great job and thank you for the videos.

    I have the padfone infinity A86 (since I'm not from the USA) and it's so awesome, very productive. I can be doing my thing on the tablet then suddenly need to go out, I just slip out the phone and away I go, everything is still there so when I get back to the tablet I can just continue.
    The padfone x is basically a toned down version of the padfone infinity A86 with its frequencies changed to work in the USA.

    I bought the Padphone X pretty much first thing. Its a great option for students who cant afford 2 separate items. Also only one device uses mobile data.
    Asus did great on this product, I'm sure their next gen Padphone will be even better. Though I do agree then need to make the bezel smaller. And thanks for showing me how to open the phone up!!!!

    I own a Padfone since the first gen came out. And I don't want to change. Note that on the first gen the keyboard has a connector like the Transformers. I like the versatility and that I don't have to sync data and apps between my phone and a tablet. Convergence is the future. Soon we will plug our phone when we enter our home and it will all the "screens" inside.

    If you have this tablet dock mounted at car you just slide your phone in and are ready to go with nav on big screen. For people who spend most of their day behind the weel, pretty handy.

    Still using mine to this day! If they came out with a new Padfone with flagship level specs today, I think it would be massively successful because high end smartphones have just as much power and capability as lower-end laptops and Chromebooks. There would be no need to buy cell phone + a laptop and/or tablet; it would be all in one.

    This looks like such an awesome concept! The execution was about as good as I would expect for a first of its kind device, but I would definitely be willing to get one after some refinement!

    i think it's a great step to the future. First, it's because now more and more people are getting tablet while having a cellphone at the same time. Nowadays, almost everyone has a cellphone and I see more people owning tablets. If somehow phones and tablets with the same OS can be synced perfectly just like Asus PadFone, it could be awesome for sure. Secondly, if you happen to carry both cellphone and tablet, and want to work at a table, you don't need to separetly put two devices on the table! You can insert the phone into tablet and there you go, you are now saving the space on the table to put something else and you are charging at the same time. Awesome idea, and im hoping to see more of these kind of products in the future.

    I love the idea of the padfone X. I have trouble typing on the small phone screen of my Samsung Galaxy S2 and I use my tablet more often than my phone. The padfone X would be great for sending texts too and instead of having my phone and tablet on the desk as seperate units I could dock the phone to the tablet and have less clutter when I am at home.

    I want this combined with a transformer book.
    The phone would have phone stuff. Really beefy processing, and a mediocre battery. Not even a great camera (use the room for more things).
    The tablet would have more storage and MUCH more battery, as well as better speakers and a better camera. Put the nice 4k camera here. Also make the overall tablet thicker to the point of the thick area for balance, which will allow much more depth for a better camera (because the deeper the better the optics can be. Modern smartphone cameras are a massive comprimise and often go all the way through to the opposite edge).
    The laptop keyboard would be full sized, would run a seperate processor for windows (if they ever let them) and would house a bunch more I/O (standard netbook stuff) as well as CD drive perhaps. It would contain obviously more battery and probably a hard drive rather than ssd.
    The result would be 3 devices that would work as tablet with netbook, tablet with phone or all 3 together. Combos of each would be great and it would be made all the better if the laptop keyboard part could bluetooth with the phone directly.
    That complete device while missing features as just a phone would give the phone the power to run desktop functions when hooked up to a desktop.
    I understand this will be very very chunky (a good 20mm at least) but i'm ok with that. It would have better camera than most, much better battery life, and 3 hard drives for storage. It could also run as 2 seperate devices (the laptop hooked up to an external screen or the phone on its own) and would fit together.
    That is the device i want to see next, combined with what i mention below.

    • @mallenwho
      @mallenwho 10 лет назад +2

      Similarly a wearable i want to see is a google glass/smartwatch combo which work together rather than seperately. Rather than each component containing processing and battery and OS designed to run seperately, they would be sold together and work together. The glasses would be the screen and headphones, while the watch would be the User interface and buttons, as well as camera (so you can tell when someone is taking a photo and then they look like ben 10 or something). The watch would contain a watch battery and double function as a complete watch even if battery for smartwatch was dead.
      The software would connect with the phone and both would run off bluetooth, using the phones processing only. This way both devices can be dedicated battery. Apps like sport or weather would be addons to this app and this one app would work with any phone.
      This combo with the transformer book thing would provide 5 devices that all work in unison to provide absolute best experience for user.

      not quite what i had in mind but still awesome.
      Would have preferred to see the OS in the laptop not the tablet, and have the tablet as a screen/battery reserve. Its small enough that it doesn't need the extra room taken up. The laptop part meanwhile has room to spare. I would have liked to see more I/O on the laptop also.
      but very nice.

    Asus, revive this line. You dont even make a new line, just add this as an accessory to the Zenfone line.
    If this came out as a possible add-on to that, costing around $100 and powered via USB C, that could be a winner. Definitely a must buy accessory

  • @herbiesmith1111

    With Android they have profiles. If they made the tablet a standalone but have it as its own profile on your phone ( to keep the info on your tablet on your phone and vise verse) when you put the phone in you can choose to use your profile depending on what mode you are in. You'd be able to use the tablet by itself for misc stuff but if you do the all in one you will have everything there. It would be a bit more viable doing something like that, in my opinion though.

    it's pretty good, for a while
    i have the asus padfone 2, maybe 2 or 3 generations before the padfone x, the padfone 2 had a 10.1 inch display station and "only" 4.7 inch mobile display instead of the 5 inch
    anyway the phone is aging well software wise and asus recently have released an update to 4.4.2 but the updating process is not easy and requires the phone to be connected to a pc, and this brings me to the reason why i would buy this device again even though i absolutely love it, the proprietary charging ports on the mobile device plus the tablet port is very VERY fragile, after one year the plastic peace that's holding the connection pins have broken and now even the pins are getting all twisted and screwed up, which is a pity since the rest of the device is still pretty solid, the locking mechanism is as assuring as it was one year ago, the battery life still almost the same, but this one small problem made both the tablet and phone just a big hearthache, the fact the asus stopped making spare parts for this model is just makes it worse, so unless you are planning to change the your phone+tablet after two years or so, i woudn't recommend it, the ease of use, long battery life and the seamless switching from phone to tablet is just too much to pass, but if its not gonna last, then what's the point
    ps. you can add apps you want to the list of the dynamic mode apps, some several third party apps will work such as facebook, instgram and even most of the google apps

    Hey Linus,
    Well despite the lack of firmware update support and it being only a dual core snapdragon processor, the first gen padfone was imo the best all around device.
    The 4.3" screen isn't as large as i'd want, but it interchanges into a 10.1" tablet with the same battery charge/share as the X and the others b4 and it's the only version compatible with the transformer keyboards, which have mmc and sd card slot, 2 usb ports, multi touch mousepad and the same battery charge/share as the tablet, giving it quite some charge and use time, and not to mention its usb compatible with xbox 360 controller for android gaming.
    You should look into it. I'm just sad the Asus doesn't update past 4.1 anymore even being a device that was released in late 2012

  • @TommyThousandFaces

    I think it's a clever idea but needs some refinement, as you said. Probably I'll buy it since I don't like have to sync data between different devices and I can almost get a tablet for free for the same price of a premium device. Also convert your phone into a tablet when at home or on a road trip it's really nice and can save you a lot of time because it's not needed to move file around between a tablet and a phone or do tethering. Thanks for the review!

  • @ZombieHedgehogMakes
    @ZombieHedgehogMakes 10 лет назад

    It's a great concept for minimizing cost and maximizing usability, but personally I would rather spend the money on a better phone and tablet, giving gaming apps will not be in sync. I had the original Webtop Lapdock for my Moto Razr, and it was great, but it just needed a touch interface and removable keyboard, which this does. The screen would have to be larger or take up more space with smaller bezels and have a higher build quality and better dock.

    Finally! This is the kind of technology I've been waiting for. I'm always arguing with my friends about why they would own a smartphone, tablet, and tablet(I currently own a smartphone, the Samsung Galaxy Note 3). Although, like Linus said, this certain product isn't too impressive, it's something innovative and I'm excited about how this will improve in the future.

    I had a Padfone infinety A80 for a full year now, and i really love it only complaints are the back mounted speaker on the tablet and a stupidly small side mounted speaker on the phone.
    I could probably get a better 10" tablet, but since I mostly use it half an hour every second day it would not be worth it, since the ASUS bundle price was the same as an standalone iPhone.
    I don't see the point in the 8" tablet though, it's too small to make a big difference and those bezels are terrible, the Padfone A86 are superior to Padfone X imo

    I would actually buy this for a little bit more (or the same) money than I would pay on just a phone. Having everything synced is very helpful. One of the reasons I haven't bought a tablet is because I don't think its very useful if everything I need is either on my phone or on my awesome laptop, but this could be nice because it would increase screen size so web browsing and video would just be that must better on the larger device.

  • @KennethCalvo

    I love the idea, while I think the execution still leaves a bit to be desired. The closest I have been able to have 2 separate devices is with the Nexus 5 and 7. While both are manufactured by 2 different companies, they do share the same design so they go well together. Also, while I mostly use online services or "cloud" synced apps and games, the amount of integration you can have with one device like this is what I would love to have. I would like the keyboard to provide additional battery life to the tablet, I would love that all apps worked fine with the transition between tablet and phone and viceversa. Design wise is ok, not the best but better than most out there aside from HTC, LG and OnePlus or Oppo. Certainly better than Samsung. Specs are getting to the point where is just more numbers in the name of MOAR. I would be happy with what this PadFone has. I mean, my Nexus 7 is more than enough for what I need it. So yeah, I really look forward to gen 2(or 3 or whatever is the next one to come) of the PadFone.

    I think it's great. I could take it on the train to work and have all my movies and games on a nice screen but if I go somewhere where carrying that would be impractical, I still have everything albeit with a smaller screen. Perfect city phone.

  • @KamilDrakari
    @KamilDrakari 10 лет назад

    I dunno... You say "maybe it will be better in a later generation" but this is already the third generation and it doesn't really seem to be improving all that much. The original PadFone actually did have a keyboard that connected well, and I think it even added even more extra battery and a USB port, but apart from incremental upgrades like the processor and resolution the only thing that's really been improved is the phone locking mechanism, and that doesn't seem much different from the PadFone 2.
    I'd still recommend this if anybody happened to want a new two-year contract with AT&T and a new phone and tablet; it's good enough at both to be worth the $200, but it doesn't really seem like ASUS is all that invested in turning this into a product competitive with phones or tablets separately.

  • @declanb6985
    @declanb6985 10 лет назад

    I liked the video because it was a good review, not because I liked the product. I personally don't have the need for a tablet/phone combo, and if I ever did, I would buy to separate devices so they could run on their own. One thing among others that I really didn't like about the tablet were the huge bezels around the screen.

  • @1300l
    @1300l 10 лет назад

    I would be more happy if instead of this dock it would have a button on the notification tray that says "sync work to tablet" and vice versa. So you press it, it send via bluethoot the state of what you was doing on the phone, you put the phone locked and when you unlock the tablet it open what you was doing on the phone.

  • @Mfury001
    @Mfury001 10 лет назад

    I like the idea of a dummy tablet sized screen that I could plug my phone into to expand its viewing area and maybe add some extra tabletesque features. I don't like the huge bezel space and would need front facing speakers and possibly a digitizer.

  • @devilmikey00

    Makes sense for those who maybe can only afford a phone or only have a very very small use case for a tablet anyway. I mean tablets are wonderful for watching movies, reading comics/manga but beyond that? I never really understood why anyone would try and be productive on android or Ios over windows/OSX on a proper laptop/desktop.
    Still for 200 bucks on contract for a top of the line (specs wise) phone that just happens to come with a tablet dummy? That's pretty solid.

  • @HonzoNebro
    @HonzoNebro 10 лет назад

    I really like this concept, not for me because I'm probably going to use my pc anyway, but for many people it makes sense, they are at home, with a bigger "phone" with better screen, battery and everything.
    Make the tablet have a stronger CPU, less bezels, higher res and the rest of the mini complains and it will be SOLD

  • @arthemedus

    If an OEM made it so that the tablet was hollow in a certain area and you were able to slide in the phone and it was completely flush with the top i'd buy one. I;m not sure if it's impossible. The tablet would have to be a little thicker than the phone, and whereever the space for the phone is there can basically only be tablet screen infront of it, and the internal motherboard would have to fit on one or the other side, or like a square with the top piece removed and moved down

  • @noseydan

I have a 17" Macbook Pro that is at least 6 years old at this point, that i use for my media consumption when i dont feel like booting up my desktop. • @mbrown808

    Interesting concept, but I don't care for the back of the tablet. It will wobble on a flat surface. They should make the thing the same thickness all around, filling out that space with a bigger battery, and good speakers. I don't care if a device is a bit thick, if it can last for more than a couple of hours, and can fill a small room with sound.

    Although I don't really care for the idea of a phone to tablet sync, that price point looks very good at $200. I bet the plan costs a whole lot though to make up for the low price point. I would prefer to have two separate devices so I wouldn't have to worry about putting the phone on the back of the tablet every time I wanted to use the tablet.

Double the tablet's battery life, nearly a full sized keyboard in standard layout, solid metal build quality, and an easy way to connect and disconnect the two together all while feeling very sturdy. What are they doing screwing around with something that's already amazing?

    I like the idea, but I would never buy a product like this unless it was much sleeker in appearance. For instance, the huge bulge on the back of the tablet and the enormous bezels really aren't necessary considering how thin other devices on the market are getting.

    Definitely a cool idea worth more exploration and development from companies, it streamlines a lot of things which can otherwise be a pain. The product is just a little rough around the edges, in my opinion. That's what the next gen is for, I guess

    the idea of a Tablet / Phone duo actually sounds useful to me.
    just the concept.
    in reality, my problem is being on the go, and only what fits in my pocket is convenient to take with me.
    now, if i can press a button on my phone and teleport a tablet to me, that.... would fix the problem entirely! :D
    then i can have a Tablet sized device anytime i'm on the go and need to do application work.
    until then though, i think a Duo is only good for me in concept. i'd still need to lug around the Tablet module, which is a problem for me, since there's no way to fit things like that in your pocket.

    we need dummy screens that work with every device everywhere, that's where i see the future going, elegant not-guetto solutions.. i don't like to be locked into a brand-ecosystem that's why i will only buy one of these if it works with other models/brands
    yeah i was extremely pumped about this, and still am to be honest, for me personally the flaws the gen1 have are not that big of a deal-breaker, except for that weird keyboard layout, but i guess that can be worked out.

    Honestly, as a European, I don't see how anyone can agree on carrier exclusivity on flagship-level devices like this... I mean like, here where I live (Sweden) you just buy your device either from the carrier or any of the common retail stores, put a SIM card in it and use the phone regardless of what carrier you use. Sure on the lower end of devices there are a few unexceptional models released for a certain carrier, but those are mostly non-smartphone models for people who just need a phone.

    It would be interesting to see this device running in Windows 10 in future especially if Windows 10 is really going to be a "cross-platformer" as claimed by Microsoft. Imagine if the next generation of Padfone X runs Windows 10. As a smartphone with Windows 10, operation in smartphone mode should be simple and smooth with minimal or no lag. When the phone is inserted into the docking station to form a tablet, it should change mode into tablet mode, providing bigger screen size to watch movies with. Then when the docking station is connected to keyboard station, it should change into desktop mode, allowing consumers to use it like laptop. Voila! One awesome cross-platform device! A phone, a tablet, and a laptop! It could be possible in future and I'm waiting for it. Patiently, waiting for it~

    Own a padfone infinity its a great device however there are some issues like phantom touch on phone screen ( due to my sweaty palms/fingers ) and also overheating issues when displaying on tablet. Hope they improved on the padfone x. But the battery life is great for padfone infinity.

    This doesn't really make much sense. I mean, a a high-end smartphone has the same processing power as a tablet, the pixel density is so high that you can't say that you're unable to see stuff even though the screen is smaller and if you need a tablet+keyboard for whatever reason, then you might as well just buy a laptop. Simply put, tablets don't actually make much sense to me and I don't see how they could be useful, considering the other options

      You are better off getting a standalone tablet and a phone, it's kinda useless if you are going to just use it to watch videos, and with the prices of 8 inch tablets nowadays it's hardly worth it.

    I would probably prefer to somehow have a phone and tablet keep synchronize auto-magically so that I got the same experience on both devices but could still use them independent of each other. Paying for a tablet that plays thin client while a real tablet doesn't cost much more doesn't make too much sense to me.

  • @StevenLynn

    I like the idea behind this phone/tablet. You have one device and the tablet part is like the old Gameboy magnification adapter you put on top to increase the screen size. I also like the fact that they can charge in multiple directions which the Transformers do not do. But the tablet part and the keyboard should go together better like my (previously) beloved TF700T. The issues I see, as stated in the video, is to much work done on the skins for the OS. I like the look of stock Android 4.0+. If I want skins, I will install them. As for the hardware, my question would be how well do the phone and the tablet "stick" once those rubber grips have some wear on them?

    It seems like a great idea , shame the tablet doesnt have a really LOW end processor to work with simple stuff , then you plug the phone in and it swaps to super hardcore mode . Ill wait for a new model in 2-3 years. Still using Asus Garmin A10

    So basically better syncing between devices, and the ability to plug your phone into a screen then the phone being used as like a mousepad on a laptop to move and tap around, but also as a keyboard, would make this idea obsolete

    Looks like my first gen Padfone is still better then the newer ones. Although the performance is mediocre nowadays (was pretty good when I bought it 2.5 years ago), but the design of the phone, size of the PadFone Station (10.1 with reasonable bezels) and most importantly the keyboard which hosted another 6600 mAh battery extending the use of the kit to three full days of work, ocasional gaming and web browsing was the best. I hate what they have done with the series, such a stupid mistake to nerf the keyboard (or outright make it dissappear) in the latter gens.

    Would be great for someone like my mom who does a little web browsing and plays candy crush. Would just like to see a sleeker looking tablet. The bezel is just way too chunky to go with that awesome screen.
