Hey folks! Today I made a traditional steak pie :) Steak pie is very popular in this country all year round but especially around Boxing Day and new year.
These are more often than not bought from a butchers shop ready made…but it is very easy to make! Especially if you buy the pastry :) I’m not the best at puff pastry, and it is very time consuming to make yourself! But if you want to, then make your own pastry :)
Everything I used will be listed below.
-Cheryl x

Serves 4 (my pie tin was 9 x 6 x 2 inches, and my slow cooker is 3.5 litres)
Shopping list:
425g (15 oz) Block of puff pastry - rolled out to cover your pie tin
A few Tablespoons flour (add 1/2 teaspoon of salt & pepper)
1/2 Pint (10 oz) beef stock - I used OXO cubes
400g (14 oz) Diced casserole or stewing steak
4 Beef link sausages (optional)
1 Large onion - finely diced
Gravy granules or cornflour - to thicken the gravy if needed (amount will vary)
1 Beaten egg - for glazing your pastry
Olive oil - for frying
--------------------------------------------
1 - Coat your meat well with the seasoned flour - shake off any excess.
2- Flash fry the beef in a little olive oil on a medium to high heat on each side until it’s coloured all over - remove from the pan.
3- Fry the sausages in the same pan until browned all over - remove from the pan.
4 - Fry the onions in the same pan until translucent - remove from pan.
5- Add everything to the slow cooker and cover with the beef stock.
6- Cook for 6-8 hours on high or 8-10 hours on low - The meat should be very tender, but not falling apart.
7- Thicken to your liking with gravy granules, Bisto or a cornflour slurry (1 teaspoon water & 1 teaspoon cold water mixed) I used beef Bisto Best.
8 - Spoon into your pie tin and cover with the rolled out pastry
9 - Score the pastry or cut a whole on the top to let the steam out and brush with beaten egg.
10 - Cook the pastry following the directions on your pack. I gave mine 35 minutes on gas mark 5/215c/415f and covered mine with foil once the top was nicely browned to prevent it burning.

That's the steak pie recipe my old mum used to make every Hogmanay for the midnight meal. She used to serve it with creamy mash potatoes and peas. The table would be filled with chease, crackers, pickles, all sorts of cake and shortbread. First footers were treated royally. I agree with you about the white pepper. I miss my mum, especially at this time of year.
Chease 😮💨
You've always got your wonderful memories to keep you going and put a smile on your face ❤
This brought me almost to tears! I had to move south for personal reason which was supposed to be two years and Im still here five years later. Your video and pie recipe took me right back to Troon with Aran across the bay. I spent hours upon hours waking the Ayrshire coastline from Troon with my springer spaniel (Who had to be rescued from the sea once as he was in the water heading towards Aran in the vain hope if catching the seagull he had spotted. We used to go down to the sea very day, particularly when the ferry was coming in and he loved diving into the wake.) Such wonderful memories. It was inTroon when my friend Fran introduced me to the pie which was made at a local bakery, as good as any homemade pie. I loved it. I miss Troon and Scotland so much and can't wait to come back. Wishing you, your family, friends and all those in Scotland the very best for a healthy and happy 2022
My son and I LOVE a nice steak pie. We cant get enough of that goohey layer of pastry lol. When i heat the steak pie, i ALWAYS lift the lid off before cooking, then rest it back on top, so it is nice and loose after being cooked.
Good idea..cheers
Happy new years to everyone, May this year be a turnpoint for the better.!.
I live in the US and my friend got me hooked on your TV show Still Game. I have watched all the seasons and have become obsessed with your country's culture. Then I found your channel and am delighted. Do you also call New Year's Eve Hogmany? Well, Happy New Year and many blessings to you and yours.

I just found your channel. This how I make my steak pie. I have a old pie dish my mum used it was from the butcher we were lucky to have in Kearny NJ. Keep up the good cooking.
Thanks so much for this. Originally from Falkirk but now live in the USA and I was looking for a steak pie recipe for New Year's day. I used one of your other steak pie recipes and it was utterly awesome. Thanks again and keep up the brilliant tastes of home
What part of the USA do you live in? If your ever in Savannah, Georgia, there is a great place on River street, called Molly McPherson's. They serve fish and chips, steak and ale pies, bangers and mash, sausage rolls, and a great selection of beers and Scotch! All very delicious, if you are ever around there!
That pie looks absolutely delicious Cheryl. Happy new year.🥳

That looks so delicious! Will definitely make this. Have a terrific New Year!
Happy New Year!! I’m making steak and kidney pie here in the states for New Years Day. I hear that it’s an English thing but that’s what my Scottish Mum always made for New Years. I’m carrying on the tradition. Thoroughly enjoy all your recipes Cheryl because so many Scottish recipes never got passed down.
Steak pie over the New Year is definitely a Scottish thing, Leigh :-)
Wow that looks so good
Happy New Year Cheryl!!!
Great pie, always good to add some redwine and mix some veg stock with the beef stock, lovely, some rosemary too
Happy new year Cheryl, hope you enjoyed your buffet! xx

Looks fab Cheryl - have a wonderful 2022.
You too! Thank you so much :) x
As always, beautiful food. Your videos are very calming and your camera is working just fine. Have you ever tried roasting your Brussels sprouts? Cut in half toss with olive oil and salt & pepper. Roast 40 mins at 400f.
That looks delicious!
Amazing video. Thanks for adding. As a Scot living in Wales I really miss proper Butchers steak pies. Don’t get them down here. My parents bring them down when they visit. I’m going to give this a bash today. My mouth was watering watching this.
Have a great 2022.
No sausages used in this East Coast of Scotland kitchen. Personally, here in Dundee I've never heard of sausages in a steak pie. It must be a west coast thing. I can only assume they are used as a cheap filler to save on using all rump steak. Very peculiar. My all rump steak pie will be prepared this evening, 31-12-2021, to be eaten tomorrow, New Years Day. Sausages in a steak pie? Not here, but each to their own I suppose.
As mentioned in the Glasgow Times, 31-12-2020:
" But if [a] team want to submit their product to the Scottish Craft Butchers for its annual steak pie prize, they will need to ensure they remove all the sausages from it.
For Tara, it has to be steak pie for her family on January 1, but the Northern-Ireland born butcher has hers without beef links.
Mr McColl explained that while in the West of Scotland, it is traditional to have sausages in the stew with the beef, it is not the done thing on the East Coast.
“In our best steak pie competition, we require them to only have beef and not sausages in,” he said.
“If it has sausages, it needs to go in the speciality pie section, even though in the West of Scotland they sell more steak and sausage pies.”
@@sharoncox4776 I wouldn't say it shows meanness at all. It does show an odd tweak of adding steak sausages to a steak pie recipe. It does seem to be a West Coast of Scotland peculiarity. Beef links in a steak pie are considered an abomination here on the East Coast.
'I can only assume they are a cheap filler', areas
traditions aside that is a very snobbish comment to make
Happy New Year Cheryl 💜
That looks so delicious!!! I've made your other steak pie recipe with the wine and it was so tender and everyone loved it!!! Going to try this one next!!
Happy New Year to you and your family

Happy Hogmanay to you and your family…hope I spelled that right
Lovely
Soo hungry! Love it
I just love the looks of this recipe. I am finally going to get up the courage to try it. Only can I use ale instead of the boullion. So to make steak and kidney pie, do I just use kidney instead of sausage? Can someone from the UK help me out here? My husband just loves Steak and Kidney pie and they are not really available where we live in the US. We are so hoping that someday it will be so we can visit the UK again. Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to all of you from the US.
I love all of your recipes and have tried a few. steak pie was fantastic! I really appreciate you put the recipe details on here too. What I would also love is to know how long I can keep the recipe food in the fridge and also the freezer as I may not use the whole product in one go. Would you consider doing this?. If this was added at the end of the recipe It would be a great help. Thank you - You are a great Scottish cook.
Hope you have a fab Hogmanay xx
