Hi craigwhitham4421, awesome that you cooked these. I’m in Australia down under we adore meat pies both here and in New Zealand. We thought it wasn’t common in USA to have these small meat pies. USA preferring fruit in their pies. Do you get them in diners or quick food like you might see in a service station?
Fantastic. Been living in New York for three years and miss little things like this. Going to surprise my girlfriend at the weekend. Then make these pies.

O.K., so even though it's HOT and HUMID here in Florida right now, and more conducive to lighter fare, I made these today. I used a Dutch Oven, and found that I needed about 30 extra minutes of slow cooking to get the meat nice and tender. @Maxbinned We eat these all the time in Scotland, no idea where you got the idea we don't have these. They're one of the most popular choices in chip shops. Also, no idea where you got the idea they're French - they're British.
Being a descendant of the Abernethy family of the Leslie Clan, I've always wondered what my great grandmother was cooking. Now I know! From the S.F. Bay Area of Calif. USA, thank you.
The browning of the beef, this is where all the flavour is, I see a lot of so called "Chefs" not taking the time to brown the beef properly, and end up with "grey" mince or stew. Lovely looking pies.
I agree Charlotte. The filling in this our looks do rich and delicious. Would it be strange to say inviting? I’m going to give this recipe a try in the next week.
So true Charlotte. I always fry off everything firss, especialy my onions, garlic & meats, juss like Cheryl do. We always cook this way in my family, but many people never fry firss & juss put raw into pan. So yucky this way! Beter to fry firss then you get the best flavor.
Hi! South Carolina, USA here - just wanted to say I made these over the weekend and what a huge hit! I used shortcrust for the top too - but came out fantastic. VERY rich. Not a quick thing to make, I'll say that - took all afternoon - but it was worth it. Thinking this could be made in a slow cooker just as easily with less attention, and while it might take longer it'd be easier overall. Thank you for the recipe!
We made the full size steak pie... it was awesome! Followed your vid to the “T”. Thank you for bringing so much of culture to your vids. Nice hearty meals. Thanks!!!
Every time I go to Scotland this is the first thing I stock the freezer with ❤😋, so I thought let me make them myself. Thank you to the lovely Chef👩🏼🍳 for sharing this easy recipe with us!!
Yip, the Fray Bentos tinned pie's are fine as you can store them in the kitchen pantry for convenience on that rainy day etc. For me though it's hard to beat a quality butcher's steak pie, but then I'm probably being a bit biased as I was a butcher to trade.
I made this last night only I added mushrooms. I didn't have pans like yours so I used the 6 large muffin tin. Cane out beautiful so rich and delicious the crust was great! I also added a touch of Kerry gold to the top when it was done. Thank you for your recipe. I even gave it to my son who is a chef he's impressed . I'm glad I found your channel
I made these this evening and they’re fantastic! So homey and comforting! I will be including them in a Scottish meal that I’m bringing to my father- he’s not very connected with his Scottish roots. I think I’ll ease him in with the pies! That’s a start!
Oh, that looked delicious. My son sent me to this video. He maybe going from Vancouver Canada to Korea for his work and wants to make these for the people there.
Just came across your channel and I'm hooked and please don't take this the wrong way but listening to your voice reminded me of my late grandmother ( born in Scotland ) who is missed by her U.S. born grandson , your pie's looked a lot like hers
I love that you don't try to make people feel guilty if they use bought pastry. My nan had an incredible touch when it came to pastry but, sadly, that wasn't a talent that was passed down. She tried to teach me from when I was quite tiny but I just don't have the touch that she did and my best efforts are pretty average, while most of my efforts are pretty horrible. Bought pastry has been a life saver for me.
I get steak pies like these when I go to the Highland games here in the New England area of the USA. I just love them and since the COVID-19 has canceled the games this year I thought I wouldn’t get to have any but now I know how to make them myself and I don’t have to go without. Thank you, thank you so much for posting this video!! I’m getting the ingredients when I go to the grocery next time!

Ohmigosh, Cheryl, this was delicious!!! Thanks for sharing. I didn't have tart pans so I made a full sized pie with the pie crust on bottom and puff pastry on top as you did. I used port wine and it worked out great. The flavor on this was rich. I ended up making the bottom crust and the filling the day before, and then just assembling and baking the next day. This was my first experience having a Scottish Steak Pie and I loved it.

So true Charlotte. I always fry off everything firss, especialy my onions, garlic & meats, juss like Cheryl do. We always cook this way in my family, but many people never fry firss & juss put raw into pan. So yucky this way! Beter to fry firss then you get the best flavor.
@stephen Krik Love it.
They look like 1 of my Faves "Fray Bentos" i luv the pastry+easy to make!!! 👍
Oh I loved a Fray Bentos when I was younger :D x
Yip, the Fray Bentos tinned pie's are fine as you can store them in the kitchen pantry for convenience on that rainy day etc. For me though it's hard to beat a quality butcher's steak pie, but then I'm probably being a bit biased as I was a butcher to trade.
Fray bentos are horrible. Soggy pastry and mostly gravy. The ones in this video look awesome. Nice chunks of beef, crispy pastry 😋
Oh. My. Goodness. These steak pies look absolutely scrumptious. I've liked and subscribed. Thank you! 😊
This Canadian would love to try this meal . Aye Las.
That looks badass...it’s morning right now, and I could eat this for breakfast if I had it in front of me..
Oh my gosh yes the thing I miss the most from my time in the UK and Australia. Thank you!
"There's one missing, i wonder why?"....yes, i wonder :-)....the pies look absolutely beautiful!
Your video was so easy to follow without any long winded intros. Loved it!!!!!
I love your accent and your pies. Pies make the world go round. These look delicious.
I could.listen to your voice and accent all day , and eat those pies as I do!😁❤️❤️
Oh Yum! These remind me of a childhood favorite my family would stop and get when traveling through Butte Montana. Irish Beef Pasties.
They look phenomenal, will be making these!
I did not expect to hear this accent. I love it
My boyfriend was asking for these so i make him these soon. Happy weekend from The Netherlands.
You literally couldn't have made your method any simpler to follow, and these look absolutely delicious! Thanks for sharing this, many thanks from Ireland!
Greetings from America! This looks delicious, I will try to make this dish.
I see the French roots of this signature Scottish dish. The cooking technique is quite French. It’s a beautiful recipe!
I'm ready to eat the meat and gravy right out of the pot.
Right there with you on that.
Yessssss
Same, just hand me a spoon 😋😋
In my family... gravy is a food group :-)
What can i substitute the red wine with as i have a allergy ?
Myself, a descendant of Clan Johnstone, I'm on my way to Asia for the next 3 months for work & I plan on making these from scratch for my hosts. This is fantastic, and I'm so happy to've found it before I left. YOU'RE MAD WAE IT!
This looks so good, and i love your voice, its so comforting. I need to find those pie tins
Thank you for posting. I'm making these for Hogmanay along with sticky toffee pudding for desert. They were easy to make and the video really helped. Delicious! Cheers!
This is Gold!!!! just so yummy I always say you could put a shoe in pastry and I will eat it!! pastry with steak ahhh so yummy this is fantastic!!💜💜💜💜💜
Hahaha so true! There's something irresistible about the taste of pastry.....
Made these for tea last night with homemade pastry. Both me and the wife agreed BEST PIE EVER! Great recipe!🎉
That looks so good. I bet I could do the meat in my pressure cooker for speed.
Yummy.
Hope you enjoy :)
These were incredible, thank you!
