  • Hello folks!
A very warm welcome back to What’s For Tea :) Tonight I made this delicious minced beef & onion pie, more commonly known in Scotland as a ‘mince round’ It was so tasty and very easy to make too!
I normally pick up my mince rounds from the local butcher but tonight I made my own for a wee change. You could make your own pastry if you like, but the pre-made stuff means you can have dinner on the table within an hour or so :) Making puff pastry from scratch is very time consuming…but if you have the time, go for it!
Everything I used will be mentioned below incase you want to make it for yourself. Thanks for stopping by,
    -Cheryl x

    Serves 4 (I used an 18cm tin)
Find the pie tins I used here:
    www.lakeland.c...

    1 Medium onion, finely diced
    1 Beef oxo cube
1/2 pint (1 cup) beef stock, I used a jelly stock pot
    1 Tablespoon pain/all purpose flour
400g (14oz) Ready made puff pasty sheet
    1 Large egg yolk
**You could add peas and diced carrots to the minced beef if you like :)**

If you bake the pastry bottom . Do you spoon the mince/ onion mix in as soon as you take it out of the oven or do you let it cool first. Also do you bake the pastry bottom at 200 degrees ?

    • @WhatsForTea
      @WhatsForTea  4 года назад +11

Hi there 😊 I let the mince cool to room temperature...and yes, bake at 200... but make sure to line your base/bottom with baking paper and weigh down the pastry with uncooked rice/lentils or baking beans to stop it rising 😊👍 10 minutes should be enough.

I am from Ontario, Canada. Thank you so much for this recipe. My hubby has always said that he hated meat pies. When I saw this recipe, I just had to try it, because I love meat pies. He had it for his supper and actually liked it. He said that it was not what he was expecting, and that he would eat it again. This is a huge meat pie victory as I have been trying to find a recipe that he would eat for 30 years. Thank you for your wonderful videos and for this recipe that we can both love.

I live in Michigan, the "Mitten State", across the pond from you. We have about 12 to 14 inches of snow, compacted in layers with ice, which is quite typical for February. It's actually been mild until recently, and now the NorthWind is trying to make up for lost time. I've often thought that we have a great deal in common with bonny Scotland. Thank you very much for your lovely tea videos. It begins to feel as though we've shared tea in each other's kitchens. Blessings on your house,, BonnieJean

We've actually had a weird winter. Usually we're under several feet of snow from November until April.

Right now it's 29°F with about 10 inches of snow.

Yummm! My Mom used to make this when I was growing up. She would serve it with a tomato sauce, and a iceberg wedge salad, Sooo yummy ! You can also add some small diced potato cubes to the mix tfs 💗💗💗💗

Thank you for a lovely recipe for a cold night! I'm making it this evening. Your winter looks like ours in New Hampshire USA!
Edit: I did make this tonight... added 1 very finely chopped piece of celery, 1 tsp Italian Seasoning, and 1 tbsp fresh chopped cilantro to the mince. The puff pastry here costs almost $5 a box! Skipped that. Served with small red potatoes and gravy, with beets and peas. Yum!!
A family member has diverticulitis.... the celery added some needed fiber.

I cheered when you brought out the Hendo's! You don't often see Hendo's outside Yorkshire, so I'm curious how you came to appreciate its joys? As a northerner married to a Scotsman, I'm loving your channel. Hoping to make him some tastes of home and enjoy some pie while I'm at it. Although I'll be channeling my northern roots and adding extra gravy. You Scottish folk just don't use enough!

This looks so good! I have everything but the puff pastry - will see what my store has next week. As in most places, here in the southern part of the U.S., we are running low on so many things. I like the pie as it will serve me several meals! Love the lilt in your voice! I can hear your smiles..

There's several feet of snow on the ground where I am in the states. More on the mountains. Northern New England is very snowy and very cold (-24c on Friday) in winter. :) Thanks for some proper homeland cooking. ;)

Do like a nice mince supper pie and that looked braw!
Being a frugal East Coast scottish lad I was brought up to use a handful of porridge oats instead of the flour. I do this whether I'm making plain mince or using it as a filling for a pie. It not only thickens up the gravy, but bulks out the mince making it go further. Adds a lovely texture and nutty taste too.
Enjoying your videos, some nice classic Scottish fare showing up and it always puts me in mind for what to plan for my tea in the next few days.

Well I'm adding this to my family's line up of supper dishes. I'll add it to my evening Tea with the nieces too. I could almost turn it into my Shepard's pie dish with a tweak or two. Love this!
